Ok so I just realized how much I miss having a custom tone for text messages... I know the standard one is very clean and fits in with the whole theme of the phone very well but with all the customization options on the Pre I can't imagine why the only thing you can select for are phone calls.

I'm pretty sure if people are vocal enough about such an easy change then Palm will respond fairly quickly.

I can wait for the Palm Pre GSM to come out instead of the Sprint CDMA version

The author needs to do some more research on the iphone. Can't run applications at the same time? Then how come I can listen to the ipod, browse safari, switch over to enter some calendar data, then right back to safari without a reload, all while rocking out?? You can still be on a call and go to other applications and enter data or look up a phone number while you're still on the call. And the worst offense...saying the iphone can't run multiple calendars. It come build-in with a work and home calendar and you can easily click a view that overlays events from both.

I hope the Pre does will since I was a longtime palm user but honestly, if you're gonna do a comparison get the facts right!

I have a $400 505 sitting on my desk to remind me why I should NEVER by another Palm product.

Anyone who bought one of those turkeys will know exactly what I mean.

Ok, so some old product that is about 8 or 10 years old has something to do with this? Makes no sense.

I wish Palm well, competition is good. But this article has a lot of holes. Like the claim that, battery life is abysmal on the iphone, but there's nothing on the Pre's battery life. Or, OS X dates back to the 80s (bsd unix), but linux (also unix copy) is brand new. Wha? And where is the proof that the Pre is "4x faster than the iPhone"? Faster at what? Web browsing? Pre is using webkit, just like mobile Safari. But this is typical - journalism today is a joke.

i hope they can improve the ipod -even that is still so primitive and it goes wrong for no reasons too -

apple is a big rotten corporate
i has some terrible problems with them and they are so immoral and rude as well
i am stuck as my itunes are with them and my music and pics are stuck on it

@vaporland:
I am looking forward to the "software upgrade" that adds a keyboard to the iPhone while reducing its size.

A better notes program and CUT AND PASTE will probably show up. Competition is good.

I would love this phone/palm combo. However, my first palm treo (sprint) literally fell apart and both palm and sprint refused to replace it. I pad $500 for it and it only worked for 6 months. I have been using a palm since 1996 and love mine. However, unless the new Nova platform is backwards compatible and has better customer service than I have experienced, they will not gain market share, they will lose what little they now have. I am a very loyal customer, but I am very tired of hearing they don't support their previous OS anymore. In addition, it should be available thru other wireless carriers-not just Sprint-which I WILL NEVER USE AGAIN.

nothing the Palm phones does that the iPhone couldn???t do with a software upgrade.

still, it???s a nice looking phone, gotta give Palm credit for that.

I appreciate the Pre Design -- it looks organic, smooth, and weighted to my palm, and the UI seems more intuitive to me than a 'berry or Iphone. And a replaceable battery is always better.

As someone somewhat intimidated by smartphones, I find the UI videos totally intuitive and clear. And, well, I find the design thrilling. I love the smooth, organic, pebble like shape -- it looks like it would cradle nicely in my palm, and I definitely prefer a keyboard for typing speed than Iphone's touch screen typing -- too slow and awkward.

Terry, that's a ridiculous statement to make. Just because you had a poor experience with an ANCIENT Palm product does not mean their current products will be in any way substandard. I have owned a Treo 650 & 680 which both ran on the Palm OS and loved them both so much I ended up buying a Treo 750 running Windows Mobile 7 which I've used (and abused) for most of the last year. I've looked at just about every other Smartphone available currently including RIM, Symbian and OS X based phones and wouldn't trade my Treo for any of them at any price. Most of my co-workers have all switched to either the iPhone or Blackberry phones but I'm completely satisfied sticking with my Treo for the foreseeable future.

Will I go check out the Palm Pre when it comes out? You bet I will! The fact that it has started as a ground-up project spearheaded by the geniuses that created the iPod only reinforces my desire for one of these. If it is HALF as good as it sounds here, I'll buy it. Personally, I'm sick and tired of lame phones that try to do too much and their processors & memory just crap out on me. This is one area that Palm has always excelled in - keep it simple and make it work the way it's supposed to. Not having a bastardized OS that wasn't designed to operate the device in the first place is the root problem for most phones IMHO.
