I'm a fairly committed atheist. I would have given Ted and his family food and shelter in a heartbeat. I feel bad for the guy, even though he should have known better about the drugs, the lying and the Christianity. Maybe more forgiveness for the latter than the formers. Now that he's finding himself and doing better, perhaps he should properly research his religion, learn that there are far better secular answers out there, and try being good for goodness's sake. We'll see.

Cafetaria Christianity. The more I read and learn of the Bible the more convinced I become that it was written by men as a way to socialize society--as a law. Now we have laws that are separate from Biblical truths. It is both sad that Haggard felt that he had to deny an integral part of himself in the first place. However, because he went after those who couldn't (not all gays can hide) or wouldn't hide, he deserves the internal hell he is now suffering. God doesn't judge anyone on the sins of their brother, but instead on how they treated their brother.

Maybe he could open up with a congregation of people who are confused.

    Ted,

Stop. Come completely clean... publicly. You're gay, you still have gay desires and urges and you've always been gay. Tell people the truth, that you choose to live a heterosexual lifestyle and that it's o.k.. God loves you Ted Haggard. He doesn't want you to stop preaching, he wants you to stop preaching hypocrisy and start preaching the truth. God loves everyone where they are. Hooked on drugs? God loves you. Gay? God loves you. Sick sin filled and in despair? God loves you. When you stop running from the truth of who you are and the depth of God's grace, you'll stop selling insurance and gain a greater congregation than you could have ever imagined.

    kricket:

I agree with your commentary on Haggard, but your belief in homosexuality will make everybody like you and is "inclusively" pc, but disagrees with the Bible and science, but wouldn't make a difference if it were genetic anyway. See my previous posts.

  • Posted By: kricket_04 @ 01/10/2009 6:42:49 PM

I wish my fellows readers/commenters would not lump all Christians together. Many practicing Christians I know (myself included) believe homosexuality is a natural, in-born trait and that we should love our queer brothers and sisters just as God made them. I happen to agree with Haggard that his church tossed him out just when he needed a church most. Unfortunately, it seems he got a taste of his own medicine.

In some peoples' biblical obliviousness, they wouldn't know that the sheep metaphor in the Bible was an anthropomorphism, only used to help the people of a predominately sheepherding culture comprehend the personal relationship of following Christ, since people then understood that sheep are known for recognizing, responding to, and following the sound of their master's voice. This has nothing to do with believers' intelligence, which doesn't make a difference anyway or determine anything regarding a relationship with Christ. Unfortunately ironically, ignorance and closed-mindedness knows no education level or belief system and is equal opportunity, which I've experienced myself before becoming Christian and with atheists in general.

A similar anthropomorphism would be the fire and burning metaphorical descriptions of hell, as a small corporeal way of relating the infinitely more intense "burning" spiritual separation and judgment of Hell.

Of course, some are comforted by and can only hide behind cute, trite, and distorted concepts, words, phrases, and clips of phrases. Been there, done that myself, and "nothing new under the sun" for 2,000 years.

I had never respected Ted Haggard or the other preachers who fell from grace in their megachurches--which do not exist to bring people to Christ but to make money for the preachers. However, we are all human. How could one billion people worldwide declare that Jesus saved them by grace, but that he can't do the same for Haggard? He may have messed up, but no matter how you feel about his sins, we all sin. It's truly tragic that we are continuing to persecute this man for a simple human mistake.

It's not about punishing Haggard or about not forgiving him. It's about asking him to be accountable for his actions by submitting to an authority and leadership structure. It's about biblical discipline. The problem for Ted is that he did not want to submit to that process.

Gay rights have burst open a festering sore that not only shows the true ugliness of organized religion, but threatens the separation of church and state. For what gay people are doing is trying to remove the last obstacle in patriarchal control of people's private lives. In my own family, if one were apply biblical proscriptions, every single person would have been stoned to death by now. Yet some of the condemned would still deny gay people the civil rights based on laws even they have broken. Who decided the Bible is the law of this country and not the Constitution and our Bill of Rights? Hypocrites one and all.

This is the problem with the church today. They are very willing to forgive their own, but completely intolerant of anyone who dares believe something other than what they preach. Religion is the root of all evil in this world and the war in Iraq is just one example of that. The christians "do as I say, not as I do" attitude should scare everyone. Unfortunately, the churches have used gay people to instill fear in their followers and guess what? It's worked. It's the christians themselve that give religion a bad name...not anyone else.

I agree Cheif though I wouldn't apply the term Morons -- only because there alot of genuine people Gay and Straight that hold a steadfast love for God-- but unfortunately the Ted Haggards of the world will continue to say one thing and do another .....No wonder so many Gay Men and Women are reluctant to attend places of worship , myself included....It wouldn't surprise if God cries not because Ted Haggard is Gay but because of the lies and manipulation and subsequent damage Ted Haggards actions have had on people...

    • Posted By: willem1 @ 01/10/2009 5:48:46 PM

any gay man or woman that believes in this god/jezus hokus/pokus should have her/his balls cut-off. by now u should know that religion hates gays and uses us only as a moneymaking tool, wake-up gay brothers and sisters its a total money making scam !! a 24/7 fraud.

  • Posted By: perrin @ 01/10/2009 4:46:37 PM

wakeup2reality, The reason this ^%$%* guy is such a media draw is because this type of behavior needs to be EXPOSED for what it is. Fleecing the public in the name of God and pretending to be a shepard protecting them from evil.

    • Posted By: TheGardener @ 01/10/2009 5:47:11 PM

Perrin...:-) a good shepherd doesn't !@#$ his sheep... Maybe that's exactly what is wrong with religion.

  • Posted By: perrin @ 01/10/2009 4:38:38 PM

Eloquently put Fred L.Va. "If he would have never have been caught he would, in my opion , still be up on the pulpit taking peoples money and slobbin some guy's knob!! "

You have a way with words. lol

If you lay down with the dogs (dyslexic for god) you get the fleece?

  • Posted By: olddognewtricks @ 01/10/2009 5:37:31 PM

So if you don 't get god's blessing that mean that you've failed and don't deserve them, or that others are more blessed?

People really believe this stuff in the 21st century!

  • Posted By: cpipkins @ 01/10/2009 3:20:14 PM

cpipkins must leave for the day.

No matter how you feel about me, it is my desire to see that no one perishes. EVEN GOD does not want to condemn us to everlasting punishment. In the book of Ezekiel He states over and over again through the prophet that He does not take pleasure that even the wicked perish - neither do I.

    In Christ.

Jeremiah..isn't that the dude who sold the Nasi/Nobles of Israel and Judah to Babylon. Everyone was killed and he was the sole survival who traveled with a Babylonian escort to Ethiopia?

      Jeremiah 39:
6 Then the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes; also the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah.
7 Moreover he put out Zedekiah's eyes, and bound him in fetters, to carry him to Babylon.
8 And the Chaldeans burned the king's house, and the house of the people, with fire, and broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

10 But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left of the poor of the people, that had nothing, in the land of Judah, and gave them vineyards and fields in that day.

But Jeremiah SURVIVED! While Zedekiah was taken to Babylon with his eyes poked out..how long you think he survived that horseback ride?

      http://www.mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt1139.htm

Why is Haggard preaching Jeremiah? Why are they all preaching Jeremiah? Seems Jeremiah betrayed beautifully his people while saving his own skin.

Your delusional mind is in dire need of help. You cannot prove anything of your claims but already you have this mental state of mind that you need to save other minds... Religion is a field day for psychology and psychiatry. Mentally sick minds in control of our planet. And you wonder why this planet is being destroyed!?

      • Posted By: cpipkins @ 01/10/2009 4:23:52 PM

This planet is being destroyed because the human race has rebelled against God and His sovereignty - plain and simple.

        • Posted By: TheGardener @ 01/10/2009 4:30:30 PM

Who is this god which believes he can enslave the human race into a herd, make his case on poverty and illiteracy, destroy the basic structures by which mankind has lived for thousands of years? Seems your god, you cannot prove is a fiction of your mind in which you play the submissive empty head. Do not take others with you on this path of masochism.

Not taking anyone with me, I simply hate to see people suffer and it's far too easy to blame God for our problems when He has given us a choice.

As far as evidence of there being a God, explain something to me; why hasn't life been discovered ANYWHERE else in the entire universe? Nothing, not a worm, not water, not plant life, NOTHING............ oh wait, there is one little planet named earth.

As far into the universe as man is now able to see, can you give me another explanation - any explanation - other than the biblical account as to where this all came from. Oh, and forget chance - the odds are um..... out of this world.

            • Posted By: cpipkins @ 01/10/2009 5:07:07 PM

This God not only created the world and everything in it (including you) but has not enslaved anyone. He has laid out His will for us and the world and ironically has given us the free will to CHOOSE to obey. That's a great God.

Interesting that every job he has applied for - even counseling - had to do with selling. That's what evangelicals do- they sell religion to morons.

    • Posted By: TheGardener @ 01/10/2009 5:14:57 PM

They sell an afterlife insurance they cannot pay out. I.o.w. Frauds who benefit from tax exemptions. Wicked people.
