    PS
With these comments you all make Americans look like hate filled jealous lunatics. Instead of getting angry, make an argument and try to understand this person's perspective.

Well said, m05u5y. Seeing the power of critical thinking, I liked my English writing classes in my graduate school more than my Chinese writing class in high school. In real life, however, I don't see this power of critical thinking is employed by every American. This essay, regardless of the position of the authors, made very good arguments. In addition, the authors did their homework on China. Unlike some other readers arguing without logic but with hatred and ignorance, the writes collected data and presented facts for their arguments.

You are correct. I don't understand "Nukelies" comments and position. The immigrant argument is what I don't understand. And we shouldn't worry about copying China. Just because certain things work well for China that doesn't mean they would work in the US. Conditions in China are so different than in the US that this whole article makes no sense. This article however triggered a discussion and lots of thinking. And that what is needed.

This is a balanced and positive article on China, seldom seen on a major western publication. People from western media community tend to super-impose their own believe on China. Many many times, they are proven simply wrong in the face of facts, yet they seem more willing to look the other way for themselves. From this perspective, this article is a true break-through.

Now put aside economy and social progress, the true legitimacy of Chinese leadership depends on its capacity to safe-guard China???s sovereignty and to preserve the country???s unity. This is why western media is still banned from Tibet, ???cause they have been terribly wrong on the Tibet issue. Even though Chinese people are more tolerant and mature and willing to look the way, but western media??? stand on the Tibet issue will not be forgetten.

Sorry if our oposition to Genocide offends you.

In response to your comment, Nukelies, i will like to ask you who do you think are the ones that have the power, you, for example? I guess you are not contributing to the greatness of this country, we need people to think, speak, and act right, not discriminating, not blaming others for our sufferings, we have what we deserve.

    • Posted By: Gears @ 01/15/2009 1:30:01 PM

Sonny10, I couldn't agree more. In stead of bickering and blaming we need to work together.

Just as in the last great world wide (de) recession the parallels of history are stunning and may indeed highlight the sometimes high cost of democracy and freedom. Specifically the economic growth of Nazi Germany in the midst of a similar economic crisis was based on monopolistic authoritarian political dictatorship, manipulation and promotion of Nationalism through propaganda and censorship, scapegoating and persecution of religious and ethnic groups, expansion of the "motherland" and claims and military invasion of "historical" land claims, abuse of civil rights and disregard of world opinion, self serving righteousness and complaints of past grievances to justify their current actions, and finally the basic philosophical belief of its superiority (Mein Kampf/ Middle Kingdom).

      Excellent point. Well researched.

I wonder how many of the people commenting have actually been to China? And how many are actually understanding the complexity of our world trade? None of this is black and white and everything as two sides. China is overrated and its economy is still much smaller thant the US Economy. Many article's written about the preceived threat of China to our economies are written out of fear and lack of understanding. We need to do what had been done in the past. Stay on top of the game. Be better and smarter. Look at the arrogance of the Auto Industry in Detroit. Once considered the best measured by their products and their industry overall they got lazy and lost creativity and ingeniuty. They failed to stay ahead and KEEP working hard to stay on top. The foreign competitors simply kept moving on and got better.
Here is the GREAT thing about the US. History has shown that no other nation is better in getting their "butts in gear", dig our, put their minds to it and fix whatever problem their is. This nation still has that potential more than any other nation. Remember, I am an immigrant and US citizen. In addition I traveled and visited many places around the world including China. I am aboslutely convienced that this nation still has the greatest minds, greatest workers and the tallent to fix about anything. However, greed corruption and lack of work ethic got in the way. In other words we just slacked off.

This shouldn't be about how much people think China sucks, but how we as a country should improve a broken system.

  • Posted By: Gears @ 01/15/2009 12:40:11 PM

Well, I am an immigrant from Germany who built a business and created jobs in the US. I am also a US Citizne wo believes the US are the Greatest Country on Earth. I coudn't help to notice "Nukelies" lack of command of the English language in all his ranting. Besides the fact that nobody is "forcing" us tu buy Chinese products, what type of US American are you refering too? At least I had the common sense to learn proper English before starting to rant about some"Immigrants". Please clarify who you define as US Americans? Where did your ancestor come from?

Nice responses guys, so mature and understanding. That's why we haven't made advances since the 60s other than better hairspray and eye lash serum. Not only that but some of the spelling in these comments is atrocious. Right now Capitalism is just as bad as Communism because in both cases they were abused systems. Humans cannot be trusted to care for each other so someone has to do something. When the rich get richer and the poor get screwed into owing the rich more money then we know we've failed as a country. I'm amazed that people let others put the blanket over your eyes without question. In order to evolve as a culture we need to make changes!

ARE YOU KIDDING? IMITATE CHINA? LETS DO AWAY WITH ALL EPA REGULATIONS, CHILD LABOR LAWS, INFRASTRUCTURE TO RURAL AREAS. THEN MAYBE WE CAN COMPETE. THIS IS A JOKE, RIGHT? ALSO ANY TYPE OF DECENT MEDICAL CARE TO SENIORS. LETS BUILD POWER PLANTS AND FACTORIES ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE NO MATTER THE CONSQUENCES. I AM FAR FROM A ENVIROMENTALIST, BUT WHAT THEY DO TO THE EARTH, AIR WATER IS CRAZY. TAKE A REAL LOOK AT CHINA OUTSIDE THEIR LARGE CITIES. ANYONE EVER BEEN THERE? IN THE COUNTRYSIDE? I HAVE AND THIS IS A JOKE.

Chiina is a mercantile state...plain and simple, and, as such, it exports a tremendous amount of goods while the government strictly limits imports into the country. It's internal market alone is not strong enough to keep its economy afloat.
Since the United States and Europe are going through tough economic times, I expect to see the "miracle" of the Chinese economy sputter and fade as strong consumer nations curtail their spending habits and the demand for Chinese produced goods ebbs.
Of course, I could be wrong...perhaps consumers will not curtail their spending so much as search for the "great deal", leading them to cheaper Chinese manufactured goods.
My point is simply this...the "miracle" of the Chinese economy has been bought and paid for by the American consumer more than the Chinese government's questionable economic savvy.

  • Posted By: Nukelies @ 01/15/2009 12:35:55 PM

China is and was NOTHING until George H. Bush start telling lies and working with beast in America's companies and government to start us purchasing things from these foreign countries. China is living off America's power. We have so many Asian people living over here now (ran away from their countries horrors) and stupid White Americans have given them so much that asians now own more of America than Americans that's why all this mess about should we copy China. Go to China and live if you want to copy China - GET THE HECK OUT OF AMERICA! Clean up America's government - throw most of them in Jail especially the Bushes! Get rid of most immigrants out of America and all this trouble and LIES in America willl stop and we can have our America back.

  • Posted By: Nukelies @ 01/15/2009 12:22:55 PM

And to that comment that said Indians only have real rights in America - HECK NO! Indians did not build the country or power or wealth of America. Indians lived in their huts and had their third-world customs. The people who caused America to be are the ones who have the power - those people are the pilgrims from England and the Blacks who first came as slaves when this country was not called America - that's what made America and made it great. And that's what made all these stupid immigrants want to come to America to live off our wealth and greatness and now they are destroying all of it because they are only capable of believing lies and destroying.

China is a mercantile state which exports huge amounts of products, while the government strictly limits imports into the country. Unfortunately, China does not have an internal market to support the amount of products it produces, and since one of its primary "cash cows"...the United States ...is going through tough economic times, I would expect the "miracle" of the Chinese economy to sputter and fade.
Of course, I could be wrong since Americans, instead of stopping spending altogether, may now be looking for a great deal on products, leading them to cheaper goods manufactured in China.
But, my point is simply this...the "miracle" of the Chinese economy is being bought and paid for by American consumers rather than the economic savvy of the Chinese government.
