One of the great losses to this nation of the last few years, probably the result of 'modern' approaches to education, has been the almost complete loss of rhetoric as an art. When everyone must be made equal (rather than born with equal rights), then no one may be allowed to be exceptional. The first time I hard Barack Obama speak, I realized he was one of those exceptional people who have managed to master public speaking to a degree which we rarely have the opportunity to observe. To say that this in not important for the President of the United States is to forget Washington and Jefferson and Lincoln and Both Presidents Roosevelt. This nation most wisely limits the powers of the President, and so to be effective, the President must inspire. To see the result of a President without this ability, one need look no further than the outgoing administration. Senator Obama's ability with rhetoric is something which our nation badly needs in its leader at this time. I applaud him and his gift.

Wow! What a lot of varied comments. To those of us with our head in the sand. Please let us stay there and believe that to have a strong leader is what will meake a huge difference in our country. Yes, we are Americans and we are free to choose and to influence (I hope) but having a strong leader at the helm will make a big difference, especially if he is working toward the goals and good of all Americans. We, as free Americans can help by drawing together to support this man with his intelligence and goals for us all. As someone said during the campaign- it is a relief to shed the aura of mediocrity and finally have a leader who is bright, intelligent and in touch with us all. My biggest wish is that he will stay connected with all of us, for his sake as well as ours. Hooray Anna Quindlen for writing this article. As a ship needs a captain, a school needs a principal The great USA needs an effective leader to set the tone and begin the task of rebuilding what was and can be again- a great country.

I am looking forward to the day this inauguration hooplah is all over and all the gushing over Obama is over and we get to the real nittygritty of can Barack Obama do anything besides prance around and make speeches. If you have assumed that I did not vote for Barack Obama, you are absolutely correct. I just hope there are enough experienced, intelligent, and dedicated citizens of America who love America enough to do the right thing for our country in his administration. Quite frankly, I have not trusted the man (Barack Obama) since I first heard of him and still don't. As far as I am concerned Obama needs to prove himself worthy of the office he has somehow been able to get himself elected to hold. A little more time will tell whether or not he can handle the job and how much of his campaign talk and promises were fabricated rhetoric. Here is hoping and wishing for the very best future for America, but I am not putting my faith in Obama. My faith is in the American people and the American System.

I disagree. The campaign was the time for speeches and for promises. Once he is sworn in, what I want is to here him say that its time to go to work...and then do it. I don't want any more promises...I want him to perform those promises and make them reality. That will encourage the American people and make us feel whole...not more words. Let him have his party and then get to work. I am waiting for performance, not excuses.

stc/cts The judgement you used when you married your two former husbands seems to be the same you used when voting for Obama.

Oh, I couldn't have said it better hestiagwyn. Before I started paying attention to the 2008 election (because of Obama) I had given up hope. It seemed for the first time in my life that I had actually no ability to make any difference at all, even if it was something as simple as my vote. Then I began to listen to Obama's words and for the 1st time hope came back in my life. I told my children about him and helped those who were not registered to get registered. All but one of my children voted and they all voted for Obama. They felt the same great truths and solutions emanating from him too. Their friends felt the same and this same energy resulted in overwhelming support for his presidency. So my children (3 of them voting for the first time) and their friends (many of them voting for the first time) voted and talked and felt good about what they were doing. President-elect Obama has removed the fear I was feeling almost every minute of every day. Fear of saying the wrong words, fear of supporting the wrong causes, fear of writing anything negative in reference to GW Bush and Co. (I still did these things but I had fear). GW Bush and Co. are selfish people elitist to the core. I had 2 ex-husbands with very similar character traits everything and everyone was solely here for their use to further their agenda's period (and I'm talking about my ex's but it is the same for GW Bush and Co.). This is not leadership. This is not what life on planet earth is about. In the case of my ex's one was a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic and the other was a narcissistic monster with personality disorder. Who am I describing GW Bush and Co. or my ex's. I survived my ex's and hopefully the world can survive GW Bush and Co.

This article clearly requests that Obamaa BE the leader he has been elected to be. Lead us into recovery, lead us by wisdom and example. I really don't think anyone is expecting a single man to "fix" the problems that have taken years to create. I voted for Obama because I believe he has the ability to lead me and my fellow Americans, back into the path of peace, personal, social, financial and moral responsibility. He can't make it happen but by nature most people fall in line behind their leader - things just work better that way. It happens in communities and companies, for the better and for the worst. I choose to follow a leader I believe cares about what is good and right and best for MOST of the people, not the elite few.

Oblama is not going to bring this great country together. I think that you article is out in another world. The only thing that will bring this country together is the American people. You need a wake up call or you must be complacent in your life. You have to hrlp yourself first before you can help others. Oblama is not the answer to our problems in this country. Maybe you ought to get more in touch with what is going on around you then staying in your complacency.

HOPE...CHANGE...BOLD...TRANPARENCY...really cool words...but a little problem...Words will not keep us safe. Homobama and Panetta plan to gut the C.I.A. (Panetta was responsible for declined funding under Clinton), Holder (his planned A.G.) and Reno were responsible for the "WALL" between the C.I.A. and the F.B.I. The combination of these two decisions greatly increased the risk to us...resulting in 9/11.

Bush for whatever faults you make find...kept us from being attacked again. Now "The One" wants to destroy that safety net...does he want us hit??? Makes me curious. We know very little about our soon to be Prez. Heck we don't even know where he was born for sure. He's spent One MILLION dollars to keep it a secret.

We will be attacked. I'm sure the BarackStar will soundly chastise and condemn the action. Heck he will probably even bomb a fertilizer plant to show he means business.

Maybe the answer is to accept Islam and institute Sharia law. I'm sure PEBO would find that acceptable.

    Allah Akbar Y'all

Sir, what's the deal with your parents; were they siblings or just first cousins?

Seriously, "Homobama", what are you twelve years old and stuck in the '80s?

So you believe Bush's draconian policies are keeping us safe? If so, then sir I hold in my hand a rock that keeps lions away and I will sell it to you for whatever you have in your bank account. How does it work; you ask? Well, I don't see any lions around here, do you?

In all seriousness, Bush's policies aren't making us any safer, take London for instance (my brother resides there), they have cameras on every corner, no one (including the police) have guns and look, they still have attacks. If anything, Bush gave the terrorists what they wanted, he accelerated the process of America becoming more of a police state. Sure, this has been coming, and in small encroachments (as James Madison warned us); though Bush put this proicess into full throttle, with the Patriot Act, etc etc.

A wise (but sadly racist) man once said "THose who will sacrifice liberty for protection deserve neither", I think we should heed this warning, don't you? Since it is obvious that if we sacrifice our freedom for safety we will have neither..........

If your opinions and attitude ever became the law of the land...your screen name would be quite fitting...at least the dead part. Mohammed only knows and respects one thing...POWER TO CAUSE SUBMISSION....they can not be negotiated with, no pretty word will make them repent...they must be forced into submission...

As for comparing the U.S. to Europe...that is another indication of your idealism and ignorance.....Europe has attempted to accomidate mohammed and sharia....the result of that attitude is always the same....an indication of fear and weakness...and eventually.....CONVERT OR DIE...it is the mohammed way...

You keep spouting "Nobama" as if something is going to change. He is going to be your president for at least 4 (though most likely 8) years.

I know you're a sore loser and all, and the thought os a biracial prersident gives you night terrors. Well, now you know how all rational Americans felt when we were exposed to 8 insuffereable years of the Bush/Cheney machine.

          • Posted By: chicacoug @ 01/17/2009 2:45:21 AM

You personally are scaring me...this is a time when our country must come together whatever your beliefts. Nobama is really out of line. I haven't been a fan of the Bush administration the last 8 years, but I wasn't making a slogan bashing him. Come on lets come together. I don't know if you realize but what you are writing in your posts is so contradicting and it makes me sad...If you love our country so much then you will open up your mind to come together so we can all move forward and get out of the troubles we are in to benefit all of us.....

        • Posted By: deadhorse @ 01/11/2009 2:06:58 PM

Terrorism is a fear tactic, and people like you are validating them There's no need for the terror cells to attack us now, Bush and his blind supporters have given them what they wanted, congratulations.

Though, debating you and your ilk (people who get their infomation from white supremacy pamphlets) is futile. Please continue to spread your ignorance online for all to see. With you as an ambasidor, the GOP are only debasing further....

    • Posted By: chris s. @ 01/12/2009 10:39:15 PM

Holy, Not much has changed since your pre-election rants. Only thing is, now you're a sore loser. Won't even try to support the man who is going to be your president. Yes, YOUR president. Deal with it! Truth is you have much to gain and little to lose by giving the guy, at least a chance. Just guessing here, but I doubt if your blind bigotry will let you see past skin color. Now stop showing your ignorance by name calling. I'm sure you think it's clever;however, it says a lot more about you than him. Keep astonishing us with "non facts."

Based on strikingly irrational beliefs and emotions, modern liberals relentlessly undermine the most important principles on which our freedoms were founded. Like spoiled, angry children, they rebel against the normal responsibilities of adulthood and demand that a parental government meet their needs from cradle to grave.
A social scientist who understands human nature will not dismiss the vital roles of free choice, voluntary cooperation and moral integrity ??? as liberals do. A political leader who understands human nature will not ignore individual differences in talent, drive, personal appeal and work ethic, and then try to impose economic and social equality on the population ??? as liberals do. And a legislator who understands human nature will not create an environment of rules which over-regulates and over-taxes the nation's citizens, corrupts their character and reduces them to wards of the state ??? as liberals do.
The roots of liberalism...and its associated madness...can be clearly identified by understanding how children develop from infancy to adulthood...and how distorted development produces the irrational beliefs of the liberal mind. When the modern liberal mind whines about imaginary victims, rages against imaginary villains and seeks above all else to run the lives of persons competent to run their own lives, the neurosis of the liberal mind becomes painfully obvious.
Basically LIBERALISM IS A WILLFUL FAILURE TO MATURE BEYOND ADOLESENCE that can have catastrophic consequences for society. With luck, the official diagnosis of this disease by a mental health professional will facilitate the search for a cure.

For a guy who believes the United States of America was created by "God" using big words is not going to help you much.
But here is the wikipedia.org definition of "Liberalism" that you call madness.
Liberalism is a broad class of political philosophies that considers individual liberty and equality in general to be the most important political goals.[1]
Clearly a claim that liberals are mad is madness.

Political oratory that is effective rallies people to action and therefore necessarily has a point. The problem with Obama is, and always has been, that he is a political cameleon who speaks in platitudes and generalities [change and hope}and has no genuine point to make. He is clueless on the economy (Has he taken even one academic course in econ or business in his legendary academic career (no social justice courses dont count)? He is rudderless on foreign policy.

To paraphrase Obama [I mean Patrick] it's always "JUST WORDS." And, talk is cheap.

    • Posted By: tiredofobama @ 01/15/2009 11:08:54 PM

Can't argue with that becuase this is all Obama is about. Platitudes, warm fuzzies, feel good. Cotton candy politics. Maybe that is why an empty head like Barbara Walters was for him.

  • Posted By: wilsan @ 01/12/2009 8:57:31 PM

Another "in the Tank for Obama" propaganda piece from Newsweak. Not surprising that it emphasizes 'oratory' because that is about all Obama has to offer.

Obama promised 'Change'. Where is the 'change', pray tell? Obama promised middle class tax cuts - that seems to be getting tossed out. Obama promised to close gitmo - that seems to be 'too complicated' now that he has won election.

    • Posted By: deadhorse @ 01/12/2009 11:36:00 PM

You're awfully bitter, he hasn't even started the job yet. Do you rember Dubya's campaign promises? How about when he satated: "He [Gore] believes in governemnt, and I believe in you" What a crock, this from the guy who brought us the biggest expansion of governemnt since LBJ. No wonder you're so bitter, you actually believed in and tructed Bush, didn't you?

Deadhorse. On that I will agree, W. was big government. No Child Left Behind is a joke. I didn't vote for Obama, but I wasn't thrilled about McCain. My main fear about Obama was that I thought it would really be more W on the job training and we deserve better. And I am afraid that Obama won't scrap No Child Left Behind.

Anna Quindlen, I did not find any references in your article as to why you love Obama so much because he's going to help millions of women murder their unborn children, and I know this is the only topic that normally occupies your psychotic feminazi brain, so what gives? I wonder if 50 million murdered babies would have grown up to listen to Obama's dull and arrogant rhetoric, or would they rather listen to the rustling of the wind in your empty head?

Whatever he spouts , I will not be listening. One thing I have learned about politicians - they will promise anything for a vote. I never listen to them - I watch them. What Obama has shown me fro his actions is that he cannot be trusted, he is a liar, a totalitarian marxist, and a baby butcher. Gullible Americans are pining for a New Messiah, they are eager to follow this Pied Piper. The Magic Negro is here to fill their need for "change", which thus far means bringing back the old Clinton team of coke-snorting commies and crooks, and spending trillions on socialist programs and kickbacks. Change? I think not. Obama is merely accelerating the descent into chaos and civil war, the loss of the Constituiion, and enslavement of a once free people. Repudiate the national debt! Death to liberal fascism! European-American Homeland on the North American Continent!

    Mrs. Quindlen,
Thank you for putting the flashlight on the one most undermentioned aspect of our next leader. I personally beieve that his talent for speech surpasses even the great Bill Clinton. Whether anyone wants to believe it or not his Oratory talent is more responsible than anything for getting him where he is. The power to inspire and motivate the masses into action is a power like no other. This will be the reason that this President will have the power of mass following and dogma and, because of which, this President will have power like we have yet to see in this county. The ability to make the speech, in todays politics and media environment it is the talent that must go before all others for anyone seeking office, a hard lesson learned this past year for the Republicans. Like a jedi, He is able to move others in ways that are mysterious and inexplicable. What remains to be seen is, what side of the Force is he on?

i agree i like obama for his principles but he has very limited vocabulary and his oratory is rather very limited if any -he is facing the tele and has lots of moments where hw stops to find the next thing to say

but at least he can talk without being coached even if it is rather drab

clinton and bush were just parrots -they spoke others dictations

there is no hope for anyone with a mind in politics -days of julius ceaser are gone
