Obama's speeches put him in the white house as the president. He reminded me of Jesus gathering hundreds of people, and from the top of the mountain he spoke to them. They were amazed, they followed him everywhere. He was the messiah, the long awaited one, and their savior. Now it remain to be seen if Mr. Obama's actions possess the same qualities as his speeches.

The country is in economic crisis, Israel is furiously fighting the terrorist to prevent them from shelling it's citizens, Iran may only be months away from an atomic bomb, North Korea still has theirs, Obama is up to his neck in Chicago style corruption a la Gov Blagojevich, and Anna Qundlen thinks Obama should give a speech absent specifics and long on rhetorical flourish!!!! Do you really think that hope hope hope hope hope and change change change change are going to do it?

Well said. I voted for a leader--a man who seemed to posses a combination of talents which i thought, and continue to believe are necessary to remind us what it means to be american--then be a leader of men.

You have to wonder just how people like Lincoln, Churchill, & FDR would fare as orators in today's world of speech consultants. Would we consider them good speakers despite their lack of the polish & smoothness that we seem to think is wonderful speechifying? Could any of them win an election in today's world? It's one thing to read Lincoln's speeches, but how would today's audiences handle his voice?

    Rhetorics!!!
    Rhetorics!!
    Rhetorics!!
We need more circus before we'll get any bread... Or at least Ms. Quindlen needs more circus before all will be all right with this US of A of ours.
I may understand there has been an eight year drought on sparkling presidential quotes but I can't see that as reason enough for Ms. Quindlen to demand pearls of speech as proof we
as a nation might just be all right, or at least on a better path than before.
You see Ms Quindlen, I too have watched President Elect Obama from the comfortable trenches of my suburban living room and I have seen the man becoming great in his own eyes while the Fourth Estate bubbled with enthusiasm and forgot their job was to check the guy out and not to experience him as a political phenomenon.
Unlike most Americans I've lived my chilldhood and adolescence watching a plucky politician create a cult of personality that was false, grotesque, and hard to challenge once it hatched.
I know that will never happen here. It won't happen because we're a sophisticated society with a strong "caveat emptor" streak, and not because our mainstream media has been particularly vigilant. The Fourth Estate has forgotten its watch dog function and instead is calling for soaring words and pretty turns of phrase.
I hope we'll get a good few words from President Obama, but Ms Quindlen, your advance drooling over whatever brilliance might come forth from the Inaugural speech is a touch pathetic.

I certainly hope that President Obama freely utilizes his great gift of oratory. I believe that countless millions of Americans, after 8 yrs of near-illiteracy, are eager to hear eloquence and pithy pearls of wisdom roll out on that beautifully resonant and dramatic, unique voice that we've already come to love.

We are back to the Gestapo time. Just words, just speches. Obama 350 billions welfare plan was not challenged. If you watched it on TV you could see that Obama had a list of reporters that he called for questions. I have no doubt that these people were pre-screened and knew exactly which question to ask and Obama knew exactly what to answer. We are being fooled all over again. This is not transparency, this is deception 101 Blagojevich's style. He was not challenged. I am starting to believe the prediction of the Russian man that America is going down the tube. We were stupid enough to be fooled and elect a charlatan like Obama. I do not see any change, Obama entire cabinet will be made of either anti-American con artists like Holder, and Bill Clinton remix. Where is the HOPE? I see Audacity, Arrogange and Deception, not Hope. I understand now the deal that Obama made when he visited Bill Clinton in Harlem was: You go on the campaign trails on my behalf, I will put all your former cabinet member in power. Why are we blaming Blagojevich. I do not see the difference. In my honnest and humble opinion, both Chicago leading men seem to do business the same way. The only difference is one appears to do it for money while the other seems to do for glory, power, audacity and ego. Let's talk about that Quindlen! The New yorkers are being fooled also and are about to have a charlatan as a senator. Carolyn is a lawyer that did never practice law. She has never held a real job. Her hero is Jenny from the block. Just being a Kennedy does not give one the qualification to be a senator. Were are you hypocrites who turned Sarah Palin world apart because she was not qualified. At least she held a job and was elected by the people of Alaska. Welcome to the new order of American media Gestapo, the co-conspirator of Obama con-game against the American fools! "My friends, I told you so.............."

Replace "Obama" with "Bush" and "Clinton" with "Nixon," and I'll agree with you.

You mean Palin No Show (as she's commonly called in Alaska)? I hope the GOP runs her in 2012, seriously we can use another landslide....

The bitterness is obvious - the administration of the most incompetent president EVER is about to end. And to suggest that Obama is another Bill clinton means that you just don't get it, period. The nation is "disgruntled"? That's really funny.
