The UN cease fire is a beautiful thought, but in my opinion it should be presented firstly to Hamas, because they were the ones who began firing rockets at Israel. Israels respond may not have been diplomatic, but was inevitable and the Israeli foreign minister won't sacrifice own civilians for pretty politics that Hamas and Islamist friendly governments would approve of. I believe that is a rightful act - attacks can not go un answered.
