Is not warfare in pursuit of a just cause a good thing?
The biggest problem with using violent force to fight for a cause is that the rules of force operate on competely different principles than do the principles of right and wrong.

The victorious use of violent force depends upon skills that have nothing to do with whether or not one's cause is a just
one. Those who have a legitimate cause should therefore be wary of the temptation to assert the rightness of their beliefs in the arena of violent force since their cause may undeservedly lose. There are many effective methods to promote good causes and make them win, but those methods are seldom used in a world educated to use violence as the ultimate court of appeal. The Crusades and other religious conflicts have often been fueled by the issue of who is a true "messiah" and who is not. Passions can run strong on this topic.

What is war, then, if not a noble quest?
Analyzed down to its most basic components, warfare is nothing more than the act of causing solid objects to destructively collide with other solid objects. That might sometimes be fun, but there is not much spiritual benefit to be derived from constantly engaging in it. Although it is true that war has many elements of a game, the destructive nature of war causes it to be little more than a series of criminal acts: primarily arson, battery, and murder.

This reveals something of great significance: War is the institutionalization of criminality. War can never bring about spiritual improvement because criminality is one of the main causes of mental and spiritual deterioration.

Societies which exalt criminal actions as a noble quest will suffer a rapid deterioration in the mental and spiritual condition of their inhabitants. "Spiritual" doctrines which exalt combat are doctrines which degrade the human race.

Just thought of sharing this appropriate text from the book: "The Gods of Eden" by William Bramley p164.

Iran is comletely controlling Hamas. Get your facts together. They are the financing, training and supplier of weapons. That is the reason Egypt and Saudi Arabia are happy to see Israel do their dirty job (despite their obvious anti-Semitism).

Iran is intereted in regional domination and after Israel Egypt, Jordan and Saudi would be next to follow the fate of Lebanon- to be controlled by an Iranian proxy (in Lebanon its the Hezbollah, in Gaza- Hamas).

"The logic is that Hamas is an Iranian client. Crush its military might and you will weaken Tehran and set back its agenda. But is that actually happening?" Who cares, Israel has to defend itself now against the rockets. Weather Israel wanted to or not she is now a Spartan nation. Iran will think twice and so will anyone else, when starting with Israel again.

In Bibilical history the jews were driven by the Pharoah's army and pushed towards the sea, however Moses came to their rescue and the sea split into half, to give way for the fleeing people and than drowned the Pharoah's army. Today the powerfull Pharoah's of Israel, overawed by their military superiority is killing unarmed Palestinians living in Gaza and dropping leaflets ordering them to flee their homes. With all of Gaza blockaded and closed on three sides, the people of Gaza can only go into the sea, but there is no Moses to save them with America, Europe, UN and tyrannical Arab countries sitting by silently rabble rousing to no avail, knowing fully well that every 4 minutes a Palestians is being killed by a brutal invading force, which wants them to surrender and live like slaves of the medieval ages. All this is happening in 21st century with all our pep talk of human rights and a civilization to boast of. History repeats itself with the Persecuted becoming the Persecutor of crimes with a psychophatic desire to kill in the name of peace, blinded by hatred. The people of Israel and their supporters must put a stop to all this, otherwise the God of this universe, the one God in whom all 3 monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, belive in, who forbids that "Thou shall not Kill", will punish all of us, in ways that we do not comprehend. The universal message of all religions is peace and justice for all, not violence in name of religion that we have witnessed in recent times, be it the ethnic cleansing of Serbia or Hitler's Holocast or genocide in Palestine. Look at how Jesus Christ who preached non-violence was brutally punished before being crucified in the land that today witnesses ruthless killing of Palestinian men, women and children. Let peace and sanity prevail. Israel is the aggressor and has occupied and continues to occupy Palestinian land with expanding settlements financed by its supporters, being built every day. Peace can only come with dignity. Israel must stop the blockades, stop and dismantle illegal settlements and respect the territorial integrity and wishes of the people of Palestine. In return the resistance in Palestine must cease to resist and then only will longlasting peace emerge and Israel's security concerns addressed. This war started by corrupt Israeli politicians, to diverge the public attention and win Feb elections will backfire in the long run. Isreal has the right to exist, but it cannot and should not kill thousands of innocent Palestinains, when it itself chose to violate the ceasefire on 4th Nov by aerial bombing targets in Gaza, much before the Hammas fired rockets. Gaza has many splinter groups, with no links to Hammas or PLA, who have been involved in show of resistance. This is the natural outcome of living under years of occupation, poverty, hunger and humiliation.

If you want to understand why Muslims hate the western governments read what Robert Fisk has written about Israel and try to understand what your media is happen to be deliberately failing to show you. These are the facts mentioned by one of you. Just prevent the second Al Qaeda and make your middle east policies based on the real facts, what people really think in the Muslim world and not the interest of the Arab Kings and western governments.

Mr Zakaria is right about his main point about the implications of the Israel invasion to Gaza. But the main interesting point for me is the the way he and some other American elite see the Muslim word. It seems they have a pro Israel point of view by default and if anyone wants to have even some sort of soft complains to the regime it should be implicit. If you are really supporting the human rights then you should show the support now. As an Iranian of course I feel all the structural and functional difficulties of the religious government in the country but will this justify not supporting the poor Palestinians. This is not the case of Islam , nor Christianity, nor Jewism. That's the case of humanity which seems to be ignored when it comes to the western interest. However I think you are losing the interest as well. Al'Qaeda is born. So keep if you do not care the humanity care your own interest and try to see out of western box. If you are not able to distinguish Hamas with Al'Qaeda you will see all your middle east policies just not working. Try to understand the people if you are really supporting democracy instead of nurturing the Kings.

Since we have elected Homobama...We should thank GOD even more for HIS restoration of Israel. At least someone on earth...will stand up to the demon worshiping followers of the pedophile warrior. Iran will soon become the world's largest skating rink....Hussein Homobama will be powerless to prevent it....AND...

When the cowardly scum attack our homeland (and they WILL)...and The One chastises them and bombs a fertilizer factory as a response...his fraudulent Presidency will be finished. America has become a nation of fools and frauds...it appears only a direct slap in our face will suffice...in order to break us from our trance...

YES WE CAN...but Homobama can't...HOPE and CHANGE....hope for what and change what??? Bold and Transparent...it is true he is easy to see through...We asked for it...We got it...TOYOTA.......

I guess J. Wright was correct after all...The Chickens are coming home to roost....

    ISRAEL WILL NOT FALL....Tehran WILL....

    Allah Akbar Y'all

    NOBAMA!!!

Mr. Zakaria you couldn't be so right. Iran is the big winner. This conflict which probably is the last one for the Palestinians as a united Palestine should have been fought with Iran. If Israel has a common sense they should have realized that Iran is their worst enemy in the area, not the Palestinians. But for Israel a swift and uncontested challenge is much easier than fighting Iran. .

the carnage in gaza is just too much for any human to stomach

if iraN IS supporting those poor people
then all hail almighty god -bless iran and help them to succour those victims who are only suffering as they were muslims

The Meaning of Gaza : Hopefully will reunite all muslims across the globe for peace and global justice. Israel has commit war crimes by killing innocent children and women but that is the cost of war. Peace in middle east will never be achieved through democracy and only through Islam....Islam will prevail

    Islam will prevail...

  • Posted By: ottawa1 @ 01/10/2009 5:44:37 PM

islam will prevail... new generation of leaders will take over...... Islam can not be destoryed... American and Israel can purchase puppet leaders in arab world but this will be temporary. You can not fight an ideology that so power. American media can be biased. but the corpution that going on in the world ... Islam is the only soultion. It a religion of peace for all. Jews and Arabs live side by side during the prophets time...... America nor any western country can bring peace to middle east. The are profiting from this mess and selling and making profit selling weapons to Israel

The Persians are superb strategists and they are political chess players nonpareil in the region. They consistently outmaneuver the Israelis and especially the Americans to their advantage. For one example, the Iranians have made it a point to cultivate close relations with the new (thanks to the USA) Iraqi leadership. A rarely addressed question is just what route would the Israelis fly in order to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities, as has been so often suggested? Iran and Israel do not share a border. The Iraqis have forcefully stated several times that Iraqi airspace is off limits to Israeli aircraft. So what alternative air corridor would the Israelis use? Syria? Turkey? Saudi Arabia? Round the Arabian peninsula (5000 km one way)? With the Israelis mounting a full blown attack on Gaza at present none of those options seems a credible possibility into the foreseeable future.

By the way Professor William Beeman recently made the same point made by Mr Zakaria: In reality Hamas is not nearly the tightly controlled client of Iran that dogma in the Western Establishment Media proclaims. See:

    Hamas is Not Iran's Puppet

    By William O. Beeman
    Dec 31, 2008

The conflict between Israel and Hamas is not a proxy war between Israel and Iran. This is a myth that has grown up during the Bush administration, and is now widely promulgated with little or no support.
