The real objective of the IDF attack in Gaza is not clear. If it wants to defeat Hamas or stop the "bombs" then this is not going to succeed for the fact that Hamas is mobile and everywhere. The other tangible reasons are for the elections in Israel ( to lure away the domestic problems in Israel), it is just a real war exercise for IDF and to dispose all the war equipment and ammunition which are nearing their expiry dates. The Zionist are very sly in their thinking. But like all other actions taken by them the ultimate result will be a negative effect on Israel. The Jews can never live in peace with its neighbours since the beginning of time because they are not a cohesive society amongst themselves. Some factions in the Jewish community will always be taking advantage of the other factions. It is like a curse upon the Jewish race. Moreover Israel is a "Zombie State" which has no life of its own. It needs "Life Transfusion" to be seen as being alive.

The Zionist? Abraham as I understand the Torah and Koran to state, was the Father of both the Jews and Arabic peoples. Furthermore you state "that the Jewish community will always be taking advantage of the other factions" and how would that be different than Hamas, Hezbollah, and the inumerable Islamic jihads proclaimed by the peace loving imams of your religion? Your statements are mainly untrue and your logic is morally flawed...Have a nice day!

Zakaria explains the chess game of geopolitics well, but to Israelis this is no game. He offers no solution to the terror of continuous rocket fire into Israel. Does he think that talking to Hamas will work? Israel has shown the world the only response to terror. The world owes Israel a debt of gratitude for finally drawing a line against murderers.

People of Gaza,Hamas claims victory at the expense of your lives not their own.You are expendable to the Israelis and your own government. You are bloody exclamation points on their charter. You are professional victims, there for all the world to see your suffering so hamas will profit.Stand up now and throw hamas off your back before they decide they need to make a statement again in your blood.Good luck in the next war.

timothy, good joke.I laughed because like all good jokes, there is truth in it.Also the other arab customers would have encouraged the palestinian to blow up the coffee house because it was the right thing to do.Then they would be upset because the palestinian got banned from the new coffee house and could not return.

While the article was well written, the Mr. Zakaria's logic is seriously flawed. He says Israel shouldnt defend themselves because it might make Iran mad. so does that mean Israel should stop protecting their people from terrorist because other terrorist might get mad. What if America didnt act after 9/11 do you thing the terrorist would stop? Israel has no choice but to act and they also took unprecedented measures of calling the citizens of Gaza to warn them. Its also not Israels fault that Hamas hides in schools and hospitals.

What started out as a relatively thoughtful and intelligent piece, ended up in farce. The sentence towards the end of the article reading, "Israel believes that the lesson of its 2006 war with Hizbullah was to improve its military tactics. And its superb defense forces have adapted well." have sadly eliminated any credibility the author may have had. In what way in particular Mr. Zakaria, can the IDF be said to be "superb"? Is it their obsessive avoidance of civilian causalities? Is it their devoted adherence to their responsibilities under the Geneva Convention? Is it their principled refusal to use illegal and immoral weapons such as phosphorous bombs? Perhaps it's their total abhorrence of physical and mental torture of prisoners? Perhaps it's all of these things. Unfortunately, I will not be able to read anything else that you will ever write in the future on the grounds that you have shown yourself utterly unworthy of the trust that your reader's place in you and your opinions.

Mr. Zakaria analysis of Gaza war is well thought out but in my opinion totally wrong. He bases his premise on western 21st century post nationalistic l concepts, dealing with the political leadership and population operating within 7th century tribal political environment. I believe that Israeli leadership understand that but have a public relation problem with our western based war moral strategy. If you read Arab blogs they "hate Israel (Jews)" but respect Israeli strength and even they hope it will bring them peace and security.

I dont know about what makes him smile but Ahmadinejad certainly puts a smile on my face everytime he blatantly refuses to co-operate with anything that could even remotely hurt his country and people, whether it is the war on terrorism ( which frankly speaking is now becoming more of a everything the US government thinks condemnable is terror and the rest of the world's citizens' blood hardly matters), or the nuclear initiation programme which should be obliterated ONLY in the case of the muslim countries or agreeing with the media-induced extremist theories. So Ahmadinejad you rock sir unlike our Pakistani double standard so called 'leaders'.

What makes Pres. Ahmadinejad smile- well because he knows that Jesus is Palestinian! Jesus was and forever will be a Palestinian, by birth. Moses an African became an adoptive son of Palestine. Both share the faith of Judaism. The tribe lead out of Eygpt was called to present day Isrealites/Isrealis. The Country /Nation of Palenstine must be re-confirm first and foremost before any "States" can recognised. The Torah the real Holy book of Jesus and Moses states that the children of Isreal were led to a land of peace to live out their lives. PALESTINE.
Isreali state not until the Nation is recognise FIRST! The US President and others want a State to be granted first, with Palestinian placed on reservations. This is ass backwards. Every Christian should be offended that Jesus's people are being ethnically cleansed by same portion of the jews who have betrayed both Jesus and Moses, Pres. Perez. The American government /Christians have no shame in violating the First and Second commandments of the Ten commandments, likewise no shame about the Palestinian and their country. Country First. The Nation's capital is Jerusalem, future states can be Ramahdi, Jenin, Tel Avi, Hafai, etc .
Palestinians are Muslims, Jews, and or Christian. The Isreali's desire a nationality, choose Palestinian's or African's. Jew will never be a Nationality, take another Exodus! Country First. Palestine. Statehood by voting, stoping killing the descendants of Jesus the Christ , the Palestinians. May the peace and blessing of the Almighty God forever bless you with the light of UNDERSTANDING. Brother Michael A.H. Ihsan

The most practical step the Muslim world could make to stop the suffering in Gaza is to convince Hamas and whatever
new spin off of Hamas if, Israel succeeds in shattering them, to stop attacking Israel. Israel left Gaza and Gazans chose
Hamas as their leaders. When they made their choice they chose not only the bread and butter politics of Hamas for themselves, they chose violence for Israel, as enunciated in Hamas' calling for the destruction of the Jewish State in the name of Islam and acted upon at every opportunity.
There maybe some respected Islamic leaders calling for an end to the violence done by Israel but in order for Israel and friends of Israel to be respected it must be made clear that Hamas can't do evil while claiming to be the wronged party.
Gazans, Hamas and their sympathizers in the rest of the world should know that their lies of victimhood in the face of
violent aggression are not believed by anyone but the misinformed, cynics or the delusional.

The U.S and its close ally Israel will never learn their lessons : that is the lesson that we need to learn time and again. They will commit the same mistakes that discredit the moderates among muslims and push the fence-sitters towards extremism. Thanks to these two, terrorism will never be wiped out from the face of the world.

Of course, Gaza does not hurt Iran, or for that matter the aggressive Israel. The nation that gets the most harm is the US, especially after its international image has already been badly tarnished.

The US credibility has gone down the drain, worst in this transition period when both the out-going and in-coming presidents do not wish to commit themselves.

Meantime, the carnage escalates, hatred grows, and there seems to be no end to the conflict.

Shiite Iran now holds sway over not only its own territory but also wields enormous influence in Iraq,Syria and Lebanon. In the future,a nuclear capable iranian military will be able to send tank battalions and troops unhindered and unopposed right to the border of israel itself. Its fighters and bombers will fly from bases all across this wide region with no need to ask for airspace permission and they may very well be able to drive the Jewish people into the sea.A decade ago that would have been an Iranian mullahs pipe dream. Now it is coming true.

Iran through cooperation with Pakistan,China and North Korea has developed the means to deliver a ballistic warhead already with the Shahab 3 rocket.Whether the have or will ahve a nuclear warhead to put on it i do not know. However i am guessing that they saw Saddam fall to the americans while Kim jong Il is still standing, because north Korea has a nuclear deterent no matter how crude and unimpressive. The iranians are shrewd and patient, two things i have never heard attributed to the americans and and i am sure this lesson was not lost on them

What Makes Ahmadinejad Smile? The thought of the United States the great satan, handing Iran control of their former hated enemy Iraq without having to fire a shot and at the expense of thousands of American soldiers and billions of its dollars. In fact,he must be the happiest man alive, reveling in the stupidity of all his enemies.(including israel)

As one old enough to remember and know many Jews and Gentiles who went to Israel during those heady days of the Kibbutz and the Age of Aquarius; I am nostalgic for those happier days! Unfortunately, the Age of Aquarius led to the Fascism with the likes of George, Dick, Wolfowitz, et al. The Kibbutz is gone, revealing the Nazism of present day Israel! Those friends are largely back, disillusioned and sadden except a few who stayed and became the radicalized neo-Nazi Zionist cadre; interestingly, the most radical is a converted Hari Krishna member who you can see on the ramparts of the expanding Jewish settlements stealing land and deepening the hatred and the opposition to Jews worldwide. From the romantic nonsense of Sal Mineo and Paul Newman to the present day reality of the murderous Jew: twisting their wars, their pogroms, their genocide, their inhumanity into some mind-bending defense in the name of Jewish persecution can no longer be accepted, tolerated, and must be opposed without reservation! The 3000 year Lust for other peoples lands by the Zionists is cannot be allowed to continue!
