"It's likely that the take-the-gloves-off attitude of Cheney and his allies filtered down through the ranks, until untrained prison guards with sadistic tendencies were making sport with electric shock."

From VP to low-down security guard. It is a small world, but not that small.

sana1+1=2: Haha yeah, danwalter1 is an idiot. The United States of America need not fear terrorists as much as it's own most ignorant masses, like Dan.

danwalter1:You???re criticizing countries that do not allow freedom, but at the same time , you???re praising the lack of freedom that the Bush administration has brought to this country.

Wow. Now there's class for you!

Hope Obama teaches you one thing - no party is right all the time. Oh, make that two....an intelligent response might be nice too.

    danwalter1: Wow!! How impressive!!

Crimson_tide62: I have read several of your inane comments and if they weren't so apparently heart felt by you I would've laughed out loud. Any call for any head of state short of one who has a demonstrated hgistory of genocide, ie, Milocivic and Hussein as two recent examples, would cause all government decision making that may disadvantage, injure or cause the death of ANY person to come to a halt or worse yet cause all governemnt decision making to be done in secret and cause the courts to become losed "star chambers". You make certain bald assertions without any examples or cogent argument to support your position. WHat crimes do you speak of? He held no authority to sanction any "torture" and they plain fact remains that for the last two years the Democratic congress stood by and tacitly approved the methods used to gain information from enemy combatants through their failure to even attempt to pass one single piece of legislation to stop the acts you complain of. If you wish to indict Dick Cheney you must also indict every Congress man and women and every Senator both Republican AND Democrate (including Obama) for his and their failure to act to stop whatever it is you don't like.

I think that there are plenty of people within the Bush administration and in Congress that probably deserve to be indicted. That, however, is not the point. The point is that for the last eight years, our government has been completely devoid of a heart. I understand that a government needs to be tough. However, it also needs to act in the best interest of its people and the world community. Sometimes that requires a little compassion and the ability to look into the future with more than self-interest. Much of what Bush and his administration did was not illegal. It was, however, wrong and, in many cases, disastrous. What the Bush administration did was pass policies that protected its best interests and enhanced its power. They didn't actually give a damn about the American people or the people of the world. Just look at what their policies have done to the environment and the economy, all so that the rich would get richer. Not all of it can be blamed on the Bush administration, of course, but they certainly deserve part of the blame. I, for one, cannot wait to hear America's heartbeat once more.

Maybe people should be thankful that they get to live in a country where they can scrutinze their leaders and condemn then for their actions. A leader is not afforded these privledges. In a perfect world torture would never come into question. It may not be the "right" thing to do, but if you had to make the choice between innocent people dying or extracting the information necessary to stop it from happening, what would you do? If your spouse and kids were in danger, what lengths would you go to? Would you let your family die because using extreme measures isn't "politically correct"? Our freedom of speech gives us the right to criticize, however, some issues are a little bigger than just right or wrong.

I think that some of OBAMA's supporter's do not realize the nature of the beast that is our enemy{all Terrorists). They remind me of people who will not shoot a rabid dog because it is "sick". PLEASE, the fundalmentalist terrorist's simply want to kill AMERICANS it's that simple. No matter what the USA does to appease them it will only enbolden them and in thier view, prove their point that all americans are weak with no guts to fight. they laugh at our rules and use them against us. and once again think we are weak for even having them. To them its "we will kill Americans anywhere and anytime we choose" because until GEORGE BUSH came along they got away with it. I think that OBAMA would be wise not to disarm himself until he has a taste of the violence these people are willling to dish out. Because it's much easier to keep a weapon than to give it up and then realize you need it and try to get it back. Bush has tried to arm the White House with as many weapons as possibile and I think he was wise to do so. People like Osama Bin laden will fight and kill until someone kills him, his agendsa is well known, OBAMA Beware!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Obviously, the author of this article is biased and very anti-Bush. This isn't news, it's propoganda.

I am embarrassed for Newsweek for printing this rubbish! Does no one vett these articles anymore? The comment about no direct link being reported between the torture and Cheney is ridiculous! It has not only been reported but proved by Congress. It is extremely sad that people can delude themselves in this fashion. If you have to go this far to excuse the behavior in the name of safety, you show it to be wrong. Yes, the nation has danger facing it, when has it not. Yes, there is a more determined enemy out there with a wish to do harm to America and Americans. It is the way it goes with technological progress. Things and iformation are easier to get and frustrated, jealous people seeing things that they would like to have but can't are more easily led into believing we are the enemy. That is the way it goes. We can't just go out there blindly, and make no mistake, imprisoning people because they "might" be a terrorist, is going out there blindly , and grab avery imagined or accused boogeyman. This not only doe not do anything to fight the problem, it makes us less safe by providing fuel for the terrorist propaganda machine. L:o at the Americans, if they don't like your skin color they will put you in prison and beat you. Look at the Americans, they think they are better than you, they will kill your women and children for being Arabs. It's not an easy situation and idiots like Limbaugh and Hannity make it so much worse with there moronic diatribes. If they were qualified to spout these kinds of opinions, they would be in the government, not commenting about it. They aren't, they just get people who don't know any better all fired up and ready to fight each other. They have done more to tear this country apart than any outside enemy. We are ALL mericans, we should remember that and start working together to protect this nation instead of tearing each other down.

.In 1959, there was a failed assassination attempt on Qasim. The failed assassin was none other than a young Saddam Hussein. In 1963, a CIA-organized coup did successfully assassinate Qasim and Saddam's Ba'ath Party came to power for the first time. Saddam returned from exile in Egypt and took up the key post as head of Iraq's secret service. The CIA then provided the new pliant, Iraqi regime with the names of thousands of communists, and other leftist activists and organizers. Thousands of these supporters of Qasim and his policies were soon dead in a rampage of mass murder carried out by the CIA's close friends in Iraq.... it was this administration that went after Hussein, but we played our role, it was this administration that has spent trillions of us money to keep this was afloat...keep that in mind.

Arguably, there has been an overreaction to the alleged arrogance and heedlessness of Bush and Cheney???especially Cheney, who almost seemed to take a grim satisfaction in his Darth Vader-esque image.
Arguably, there has been no reaction to the arrogance and heedlessness of Bush and Cheny, they will be in office until January 20, and laugh at the peon American people who allowed them to run roughshod over this nation.

Every American who approves harsh interrogations should be ashamed of himself. The United States of America has become the #1 country in the world by spreading its culture of freedom. Freedom is the core of the US constitution, and all the amendments revolve around it. How many European, Asian, African, Jew, Christian, Muslim, straight, gay, liberal, conservative??? left their own country and came to the States to enjoy this freedom? After more than three hundred years of promoting liberties, democracy, social equality???After condemning suppression, dictatorship, discrimination???After years of dreams, hope, acts, conflicts, wars, reconciliation??? After all this hard work, comes the Bush administration to blow up the temple of liberties, to drown us in the Dark Ages??? terror. This administration claims that it saved the United States from ???possible threats???. Wow! We should be impressed by these inspiring statements! The people of the Middle East, Central and South America, and Africa, where Bush is promoting his understanding of ???Democracy??? are definitely more impressed! These people are looking forward to regimes that cannot provide them with security unless harsh interrogations and abusive jails as ???Guantánamo Bay prison camp??? and ???Abu Ghraib??? are held. I love Bush???s statements! They make me understand why some scientists were tortured, many philosophers were persecuted, and so many witches were burned at the stake! They make me realize that since Bush has many ignorant supporters nowadays, no wonder those absurd judgments were made a long long long time ago! Since the beginning of the life on Earth, evil is making life harder. Over the time, humanity had settled systems and laws to deal with evil. Every day, we are learning how to conquer evil with a more civilized way than the day before; and we should not let anyone drive us back to the dark ages again, especially someone claiming that he is spreading democracy in the wild part of this world!!

What a joke. After 9/11 the Democrats had their farce hearings and blamed lack of oversight and intelligence gathering on Bush...after a whole 9 months in office (even though the plans for 9/11 went back deep into the Clinton Administration). After taking the necessary steps to keep our population safe (WHICH HE DID !!)...he now has to defend his actions to the same group of simpering quiche eating liberals who would have preferred Al Gore so we could have summarily surrendered after the attacks.(plus probably offered to pay damages to the UN for the environmental damage done by the collapse of the World Trade towers.)

I will wait in anticipation to see what Obama really does...and if this country is subjected to another attack as a result. Hate to disappoint the libbies...but I really think (and hope) he is smarter than his speeches.

    • Posted By: rapidron @ 01/14/2009 7:55:37 PM

Bush received word from his top intel officials about 9/11 and chose to do nothing--to disregard it. Enough said.

9 months is a long time. The instant you use a term like 'libbies' you jump out to show yourself as the idiot lemming you are. Continue having your love affair with Rush Limbaugh and leave the 'thinking' to others.
