"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.' Benjamin Franklin. When we torture and detain people without allowing them the right to a trial, we become no better than those attacking us. When we give the government these powers, can we be certain they won't be used on us? Joe Stalin, in his mind, only tortured and held without trial enemies of the Soviet Union. So, lets keep these American (Dubya/Cheney) ideals, and those of you really fond of these policies may some day have electrodes attached to your testicles. When your neighbor identifies you as a terrorist and the government sends you off to an eastern European prison, tortures you and the best part, no habeas corpus. I don't think this is actually happening to innocent people, it just scares the hell out of me to think my government may have the right to do this.

Thank you rail60 - your post is the most intelligent one yet. We, as Americans, should always stand behind what we say we believe in. If not, we don't really believe in it, do we?

"My governement" "We gave" wow you are ignorant. Do you really think any decision you have made in your entire life has effected anyone being tortured, or anyone being a terrorist, or has any bearing at all?

      • Posted By: rail60 @ 01/14/2009 7:48:48 PM

Your right, "my government" that was pretty stupid. After all, if the US was more of a democracy than a oligarchy, how could we explain a slightly retarded man like dubya becoming president.

  • Posted By: tstucker @ 01/14/2009 7:23:08 PM

Having lived through several democrat administrations, starting with Truman, I have absolutely no faith in democrat's desire or willingness to protect this country. They are much more concerned with the rights of the terrorists than they are with the rights and safety of their own citizens, we are in big trouble. For the duration of theis administartion, I would stay away form malls, public transporation and airports. They are going to be blowing up.

Are you saying that every single military man and woman are all Republicans? If so, you're a blithering idiot TSTucker! And you've got blinders on to boot!

Cheney should be brought before the world court. How can we Americans sanction his decisions, his extreme brutality, his total disrespect for a human life?

He is an guillty of worls crimes as those that we have pursued in the past.

It is unfortunate that President Bush was such a weaklim.

Torture in any form not ok!!. We insult ourselves and our nation if we lower ourselves to their standards.

  • Posted By: crimson_tide62 @ 01/14/2009 7:47:05 PM

Can Chesney be brought before a Court of law, and charged with crimes?

  • Posted By: salcon @ 01/14/2009 7:46:55 PM

no uniformed member of an opposing military should ever be tortured or treated inhumanely by the U.S. if Bush or Chaney had ever spent one minute in combat they would no why. However traitors , spy's and terrorists should be treated in a different way but they should never be physically tortured.

  • Posted By: angstandvexed @ 01/14/2009 7:44:26 PM

Torture in any form is not ok. Its not ok when they do it and its not ok when we do it!! That being said we lower ourselves and our nation if we lower ourselves to their standards.

so many idiots....9/11 was an inside job. how blind do you have to be to realize that? the bush regime planned and allowed it to take place.it was made to take away your civil liberties and have you living with fear and anger so that way you can be controlled better and not pay no mind to the crimes and tyranny they were commiting. all the signs and evidence are there...look closely. dont believe everything you see on tv or read. the bush regime walked all over the constitution and used it to wipe themselves. so did you all really feel safe? did you feel safe knowing that your own country was listening to your phone conversations? neo conservatives did such a good job programming most people minds and had them like a herd of cattle. they made an enemy for us to hate to distract your simple minds. the situation was a bit like george orwell "animal farm". the bush regime was the most tyrannicle administration ever. isnt our america suppoed to be free? we are lucky things did not get worse than they are.and its true, how can you say obama is the worst president now. hahah are you that stupid to think that bush was a genius president that him and dick cheney had the best interest for us americans? its stupid people that voted for them, yeah 2 years...im glad to say i had no part in it. some of you eventually realize the poor decision you made. at least you realized that. im not saying obama will be the answer to americas problems but at least the bush regime will be history...yes a dark part in american history.

At age 63, it is very possible that I shall be long gone when the full story of the past since 9/11 can finally and completely be told. The judgement of these years at this time should be tempered by reading past history, both as it was viewed at the time, as well as after the full truth could be evaluated for more or less final judgement. It is easy to judge superficially on various current issues, but there should be a vast reserve in mind as to rendering grand verdicts. Sentences should begin with 'it appears that...", "from the perspectives available...', "Keeping in mind that there is a vast unknown pool of information in the background,,,", et cetera.

    • Posted By: rapidron @ 01/14/2009 7:42:19 PM

Right on... except that present and quick judgment is what allows us to learn by and thus prosper by avoiding future shortcomings and changing course from past mistakes.

Through all the anger on both sides of the fence it appears that we've lost sight of the real reason for such loud talk: we all want this country to be great and for our friends and family, and ultimately all people to be prosperous and happy.

In my take, Bush/Cheney created an air and actually of hate and chaos. My ultimate quick assessment is this, only because I hope to, and moreso hope our leaders, follow a better path for the sake of all of us.

"Many federal officials have grown risk-averse, fearing that they will be prosecuted or dragged before a congressional committee for fighting too hard against terrorism. (A growing number of CIA officials buy insurance policies to cover legal fees.)"
I don't blame them. What happens if we're attacked again because everybody's playing CYA (Cover Your As*). Then Obama will be blamed for hamstringing our intelligence agencies.
The tenor of the article continues to show Newsweek's anti-Bush bias.

either charge the guy or deport him back to where ever he comes from ,in either case you get rid of the problem

  • Posted By: NoRedLenses @ 01/14/2009 7:25:43 PM

Saying "Job well done" to the Bush/Cheney Reich because we haven't had any terr attacks since 911 is akin to saying that "There are no footprints in the sand so that means no-one has ever set foot on this beach before!!" What a piece of conjecture!!!! All we've done is make the world lose respect for us, and make some really bad choices in how we deal with enemies .. all we look like to most of the world is the scared spoiled kid with the biggest gun on the block. Not the most responsible, but possesses the biggest gun. A scaered little bully with a big stick. Daily, I deal internationally with people on a "people level" and I hear what they say all the time. These are people that live in free democratic nations .... they are scared to death of us. And that is not good. Obedience is NOT the same as respect.

And just for the record ... I've heard a number of mil-vets going on and on in this forum about how "you must not be a vet" as if being a vet makes you instantly more "American" than someone that isn't. I'm a mil vet .. a Nuclear-Military vet from Ronnie's military at that, (with a combat patch, that is for all the folks that like to raise themselves above others because they've seen combat) .. and an ex-steetcop/survivor of the 1992 LA Riots. So I have the double whammy .. national service as well as civil service (with combat experience, again that is said for those who think it's something to be honored for) And I'm here to tell you folks that having this background does not automatically make one a blind Bush/Cheney supporter. There are a number of us (white/christian mil/civil service vets) that think Obama is coming along at just the right time. The Bush/Cheney abortion is the thing that drove me and many like me away from Conservative politics in the first place (not wishing to be associated with them gasholes). I also want you to know that REAL mil vets aren't holding a stick over your heads to make you honor them because they served for you. I served so other folks didn't have to (but not to hold it over their heads), so that other folks could enjoy AMERICA and the freedoms that she offers. And part of that freedom is the ability to pick your own life and live it as you wish (whilie staying within the framework of our laws). So these so called "mil vets" that make you non-vets feel less-than-you-are because they served and you didn't .. poo on them I say! A real, honorable military vet doesn't feel that non-vets "owe" something .. real militatary veterans feel like you should be allowed to live as free Americans, and free-speaking people. It's why I served. It's that which is honorable, not my service. And non-vets owe me nothing. :)

    3 ... 2 .. 1 .. out ..:)

    • Posted By: rapidron @ 01/14/2009 7:33:56 PM

We DO owe you something. And when people come on and are so outspoken, punctuating their Conservative love no-matter-what I always get the feeling that they are a farce. I'm from southern cali and know a lot of vets and not one of them are hypocritical and idiotic in their assertions, instead very thoughtful and well spoken.

It's for us civies to act like idiots here on the forums I think.

And I'm sure I'm not alone in still feeling like we really owe you guys who did all the work, despite what you say. It's a shame that so many people here are so loud in their lies, hate, and anger, some claiming to be vets when they just want to punctuate their stale and bitter points.

Anyhow, peace, and God bless America.

What an absolute joke of an article. It's hilarious when Mickey Rourke has a better take on it than these authors' obvious agenda. Thankfully, it was free to read.

It is complex, and yet, by fate, if not by design, we, the people, could not have chosen a worst candidate to carry out the job of POTUS. Dick Cheney's power grab combined with George Bush's lazy inattention are what have weakened our country. Fortunately for us, we have a fail-safe system that stopped us from going under just in time. It is not as if other Presidents before George Bush have not used torture in a time of war or even in peacetime to prevent a crisis from escalation. It is that they don't smirk and stand under a Mission Accomplished sign. They also do not shoot at people who agree or disagree with them, willy nilly, and THEN claim to be a good shot or unebriated.

The press will continue to make a case for transparency, but while you proclaim the virtues of Cheney's gravitas or exagerrate Bush's ADHD, it would bode us well to acknowledge that the press has become lazy and self-indulgent. Peter Jennings once covered the news without making it about himself. Brian Williams continue to do so. Why is it that we now have Chris Matthews on one side and Bill O'Reilly on the other side, who confuse news with playing newsclippings and shout over the people they invite to be on their programs if other correspondents and respondents do not agree with their world view.

It would be an oversimplification to think that corporate greed will ultimately dictate that they get out of the news business once they have reached the conclusion they can no longer make money. In an utopian world, that would indeed be the case. In the real world, another Bush will run for president, since old habits die hard. What is certain is that Bush/Cheney have lowered the bar so much for the idea that a President can serve the people and respect the Constitution that even John McCain or Sarah Palin actually looked good in comparison. The only way Obama can look bad is for Republicans to start playing the race card or the experience card as soon as he gets started and start blaming the end result of their corruption and their failures on him. Even then, his imagination and intelligence will still win out. Why do you think he invited Rick Warren?

This s a purely Editorial piece of fluff disguised as news... what a joke...
