911 happened because Bush ignored the warnings. 911 happened because Bush is inept. 911 happened because the administration was asleep at the wheel. So don't try & sell me how they "kept America safe". They did not. 911 happened and they ignored all the intelligence.
I would also like to point out that Cheney had 5 deferments but had no trouble sending other peoples' kids off to die in a war for oil. A war he has profitted handsomely from due to his deferred Halliburton stock options. He is a coward, a war profiteer, and a shining example of why those across the globe hate Americans. Both he & Bush should be tried for crimes against humanity.

Excellently-written article, discussing all the salient aspects of a complex issue. The author makes an excellent case for the incoming Administration to take note of. The bottom line, for the Commander-in-Chief is to be responsible for ensuring the safest 4-8 years possible, in spite of an increasing array of threats. I strongly agree that Cheney-Bush have created a worse image of interrogation techniques than deserved, considering the benefit they serve to national security. Cheney-Bush created an arrogant, ignorant image of the Administration, but they suceeded in keeping the country free from major attack. Obama has the opportunity to take a much more intelligent approach in all things (that would be easy, following the Bush Administration), however, he must take appropriate action to keep the country safe from major attacks.

Remember all the comments about Bush??? Well, just wait a few weeks and you will wish Bush was back. I promise.

      NEVER in a million years!

I was against Bush and warned people about him before the 2000 election. I got on my soapbox again before the 2004 election. I couldn't believe that people actually voted for Bush the second time, let alone the first! It wasn't until the sheet hit the fan with the housing market, and the stock market that people clamored for and FINALLY effected a change.

I'm realistic and don't expect Mr. Obama to be a miracle worker, because no amount of wand waving will fix the mess lil'george got us into. And Mr. Obama can't do the work alone. Every single citizen will have to put in just as much hard work as Mr. Obama does to put things right again.

And regardless of political party, realistically, every politician succeeds in making someone unhappy. There's just no way around that fact of life. Somebody somewhere is gonna moan or whine about some little thing. So just because some of you out there might not like Obama's every policy, don't take that as an excuse to start in with "I told you so, I told you so." Nonsense! No one person can be all things to all people. Period. But Bush took things way too far, which is why absolutely NO Republican had a chance in the '08 election.

Anyone who STILL insists on supporting Bush, Jr., after the overwhelming defeat of the Republican party's majority stranglehold in Nov. '08, is just inviting ridicule, and is risking a stint in the looney bin at the invitation of the rest of us.

Now quit'cher bitchin' and roll up your sleeves like the rest of us. Anyone who supported Bush for the last eight years is as much to blame for this mess as he is, and should work twice as hard to help revitalize America, together.

Quit complaining and go to USAservice.org to see how you can volunteer, and be part of the solution.

      ~ T.C.Kennedy

For me, this article is just one more of late attempting a historical 'make over' of the worst presidency in history. No one ever wants to mention that 9/11 happened under Bush???s watch in the first place. All the investigations and claims for the need of more far reaching presidential powers are one big cover up for their incompetence and failure to keep us safe in the first place. After the largest attack on American soil occurring when Bush was President, running around years later saying ???look we haven???t had another because of us??? is the stupidest argument for success I have ever heard. The occurrence of 9/11 was incompetence at its deadliest.

    • Posted By: NoMoreKoolAid @ 01/14/2009 7:27:48 PM

Yeah? Just wait till Biden's "inevitability" comment comes to pass baby. Bush had been in office for exactly 9 months when 9/11 happened....those guys had been planning this for a lot longer than that - in fact as soon as they failed the FIRST World Trade Center attack under Clinton...grow up. You can't fight terrorism with the milk of human kindness, they will eat you alive.

Well, maybe if bleeding heart liberals like you had done something about the ineffective immigration laws prior to Bush's presidency. Or do you advocate amnesty for the 12 million illegals that are here now?

      • Posted By: usmer1 @ 01/14/2009 6:55:36 PM

Actually, Bush and the Republicans have been in charge for several years now and they have done nothing about illegal immigration. But of course you want to blame everyone else that you disagree with.

Let's see, from 93-01,under clinton,we had Khobar Barracks bombing of Air Forse personnel in Saudi. The USS Cole bombing in Yemen,2 American embassies blown up in Africa. The first World Trade Center bombing and he used Tanks to annihilate the Branch davidians in Waco Texas.Oh,did you see Blackhawk Down"??Another Clinton success story.Had he actually done something to dissuade terrorists,011 would never have happened.

I can't stress enough what importance all the "secrecy" had on the security of our nation. It's amazing to me that some people who call themselves US citizens would put the "safety" or rights of someone who doesn't live in this country ahead of their families and their fellow citizens. I do agree that the Pres. and VP should have been a bit more open about their actions but you have to admit that what they did, they did for the security of the people and country they serve. I would never want my gov't to kill someone but in light of the 9/11 events and the words and actions of extremists in hard-line nations (Iran, Somalia to name a few) then the actions by our gov't sure beats having to mourn the dead and look back at where our gov't failed us. Our govt's single highest priority should be the safety of us, it's people. You think George Washington would defend our enemies? NO, and G. Wash. is the embodiment of this great nation's morals & values.

Right on--a legit argument... the unknown fear and really what you're talking about here.

  • Posted By: NO2WAR @ 01/14/2009 6:48:21 PM

It is obvious these writers are schilling for renegades in the CIA who want to justify their crimes. Torture is always wrong, it doesn't work and America is better than that. If we fail to hold accountable those who broke our laws, then history will judge us poorly. No is the time to put the Bush crime family on trial. And yes, Bush deserves a fair trial. And if he is convicted then the only course of action left is to send him to prison where he belongs.

      Schilling, interesting word.
      History, will depict us shamefully.
That particular feeling, caused a lot of men to die, unncessarily in Viet Nam.
That same feeling is causing our people to die, in Iraq.
      Why, you ask?
Primarily, becuae, the United States government, has always felt the need to be the th, "Guys in White Hats"
We put our military,in to situations, that, are no win, for them.
That gets people in our military, killed.
Then, we have the spectacle, of people sitting in their arm chairs and condemning them.
Bush was right to attack Iraq, , but we should never have lost any people on the ground.
You do remember Adolph Hitler, don't you?
We were going to have an armed conflict, with Sddam Hussein, the only question, was before he had nuclear weapons, or after.
How ever, we should have Bombed Iraq, until, there weren't two stones standing and then let it to wither.
But that would have been shameful, wouldn't it?
It would have saved the lives of approximately 4000 young men and women, but what does that matter, as long as history, regards us, approvingly.
History, still degrades us, for using nuclear weapons, on Japan.
It saved about a million American lives, but, of course, the rest of the world and a suprising number of people in this country, don't seem to be concerned abut that.
I don't care what, history, thinks, If it will save an American life, from a terrorist attack< I'll help take their skin off, one square inch at a time.

I hope we don't suffer the consequences of the new "socialistic idealism" sweeping the country. I sense we have already forgotten much of 9/11. Regardless who was on guard, 9/11 happened and we have taken measures so that the chances of it happening again have become diminished. But we Americans have short memories and eventually fall into a "laissez faire" attitude regarding the political forces inside and outside our great nation. Please.... We can never forget nor should we ever lay down our guard. Another question... "Who is John Galt?" Food for thought here... Some will know...

  • Posted By: justanotherreader @ 01/14/2009 7:19:56 PM

A very good commentary. There are some things that perhaps we the American people are better off not knowing. It is a thin line but necessary. It will be very interesting to watch the new regiem address the problems that currently exist and those that are yet to be unvailed by our enemies. Good luck to Obama and all of America.

  • Posted By: jluc @ 01/14/2009 7:19:19 PM

Osama bin laden was active in terrorist attacks all throughout the Clinton years. Why didn't Clinton take care of him instead of thinking of his private parts in Monica Lewinsky's mouth?

  • Posted By: zgossell @ 01/14/2009 7:07:38 PM

Once again the liberal media falls all over themselves to praise Obama. This is not unbiased journalism.

    • Posted By: rapidron @ 01/14/2009 7:18:09 PM

Apparently, you are an idiot who did not even read this article. It was fair-handed if not leaning toward justifying Bush and Cheney.

Yet another idiot who simply cries 'liberal' due to his sexual attraction to Rush Limbaugh.

Obama is anti-American, anti-democracy, anti-truth as a progressive aka socialist government he will be ushering in system of global tierny, mismanagement, marxist rhetoric by continuing to repeat over and over false information and propaganda to the masses. Carol Browner is a card carrying socialist and holds an official position which Hussien Barry says will not interfere with her participation in a free republic. ????? Do you really believe that crap? Lambs to the slaughter. The global warming lie is just a way to fraud to get the world's money, thus power thus world domination.

you forget clinton had 8 years to do something about osama and bush was just handed the mess.
clinton was to busy at home with monica.

    • Posted By: rapidron @ 01/14/2009 7:17:27 PM

You forgot that Bush had almost 1 year to stop 9/11 and disregarded a memo from his own high ranking intelligence official stating the details of 9/11.

You forgot that during the 8 years before Clinton, no outside terrorism struck the US as with Bush.

Did you forget all of these things, or are you just stupid?

Cheney is an abomination,, a common criminal , a liar, a murderer, a terrorist , a racist and an embarassment to this Nation. I would like to see at the very least for him to spend the rest of his diease riddle life in prison.
If Cheney crawl up to my door dying of thirst I wouldn't give him a cup of dust. I see him as a coward as well for not serving in any of the Armed Forces.

Get a life Lewis or grow up. All this emotion and of course no facts. Children love to have trantrums. If you have got the goods on Cheney, lay it out. If not, go sit in the corner.

Regarding wire-tapping, If you are not doing anything wrong, why would you be opposed to having your phone potentially tapped if it means that someone who is plotting a deadly attack is caught? Regarding, torture techniques, does anybody know whether various truth serums and disinhibiting drugs constitute torture?...maybe more research into getting the truth via medicines (without hurting the detainee) is warranted.

The first paragraph should have read:
Dick Cheney, who will step down as vice president on Jan. 20, has been widely portrayed by we big media types as a creature of the dark side, a monstrous figure who we wrongly accused of trampling on the Constitution to wage war against all foes, even if the American voters did not know about them due to National Security. We in the left-winged media made sure Barack Obama was elected partly to cleanse the temple of the Bush-Cheney and to uphold our image since our sales have dropped like a boulder falling from a mountain. The Media Messiah's campaign speeches may have been just promises, but at least he promised to reverse Cheney's efforts to enforce the Constitutional power for the White House in the war on terror.

If all of the facts were known to we, the public, we would be horrified and sickened by the assaults on this country that have been PREVENTED this this Administration. If Obama goes too far the other way, there WILL be a devastation that would make 9/11 seem like child's play. And to all of you pantywaists crying about the "poor" Gitmo detainees, I would suggest that you would have a different opinion on the matter had you been on the 110th floor of Tower 1 on 9/11...

  • Posted By: aztlan_oz @ 01/14/2009 7:12:15 PM

The world is in a worse state than when George W Bush and his co-conspiritors took the presidency, more fool the American voters who only have them selves to blame for every thing they now own, thousands of US soldiers lives squandared and a global recession largely it appears of the USA's own making, one looks with some optimism that the new team being put into place will treat a more considered path and revive the USA image abroard and raise the optimism and respect of the American people to their country, out of all this is one truth the USA is no longer the powerhouse of the worlds economy or the true leader of the Democratic movement, that perception is laid to rest.

If only it were so easy. We can???t end terrorism by becoming fascists. Fascism is the worst of terrorism. We could probably set the Islamist movement back some by nuking everything between Israel and India. The only problem would be those pesky innocent people that live there. We could probably end all crime by simply listening in on everyone???s conversations all the time. But, oops, we???d loose everything that makes America great. That???s the dilemma. Not fighting terrorism, but fighting extremism without becoming extremists. We are not who we SAY we are, we are what we DO. Who are we? By the way, no one blew up any of our buildings for the eight years before 9/11 either. That doesn???t say anything about the efficacy of Bush???s policies, and it won???t say anything about Obama???s either.

  • Posted By: sdelucia @ 01/14/2009 7:01:23 PM

manandindia just so you know if clinton had got to osama bin ladin when he had the chance 9/11 would never have happend.

DID YOU KNOW THAT?? Now you do.
