This Newsweek piece, like most others I've read recently, demonstrates what is wrong with mainstream journalism in this country. The authors of this article just don't seem to understand a basic aspect of terrorism perpetrated on free societies. Only part of the intent is to inflict physical and psychological damage. The more significant intention is to cause undiscrimating yahoos (read: mainstream journalists) to recoil with such fear that they immediately abandon any pretense of supporting rights and freedoms established under our Constitution. In the fisrt paragraphs the yahoos who wrote this piece clearly don't understand the importance of "habeas corpus" , for example. So the terrorists are winning, after all...

      I COMPLETELY AGREE. WELL SAID.

Who was in charge when these terrorists entered this country? Everybody wants to forget that GWB and company were the ones that let 911 happen in the first place. It was a free for all until that tragedy happened. Now everybody seems to think the new administration was the cause. Give me a break!

    • Posted By: GreatBritten @ 01/14/2009 6:51:59 PM

see now you just being retarded, hate resorting to insults but that deserves it. Those hijackers were in the country at least a year prior to 911 jackass, and guess who was in office at that time :D

Of course they were here before, but Bush still failed to stop the attack even when he had plenty of warning and intelligence information stating this type of attack was imminent. Just like he chose to ignore the intelligence stating there were no WMD's he chose to ignore the intelligence warning him of 9/11.

you know, thats all supposition and you can't provide one shred of evidence, BUT there is evidence that Clinton had Mr. Bin Ladin literally in thecrosshairs but didn't pull the trigger. Now how ya explain that one?

    • Posted By: amars1983 @ 01/14/2009 7:03:01 PM

Do you really think the 9/11 attacks were planned the short time Bush and Cheney were in office? I'm sure went back very far into the Clinton era.

Do you really think that the 9/11 attacks were planned in the relatively short time Bush and Cheney had been in office? I'm sure plans stretched back far into the Clinton era.

Once again, the liberal media sides with Obama. Great job on your unbiased report.

    • Posted By: rapidron @ 01/14/2009 7:09:40 PM

Apparently, you are an idiot who did not even read this article. It was fair-handed if not leaning toward justifying Bush and Cheney.

Yet another idiot who simply cries 'liberal' due to his sexual attraction to Rush Limbaugh.

Cheney is nothing but a crook, just like his buddy Bush. We will be so glad when Bush and Cheney are finally out of office. They ruined this country and did nothing good either. The only thing they did, was lie and fund this stupid war they started and both of them should be charged with war crimes. But this country is so crooked and corrupt, that nothing will happen to either of them. Obama is NOTHING like Cheney and Bush and Obama is going to make this country we call America, strong again.

Jesus Christ! I thought the author was pretty easy on Bush-Cheney. He defended their actions by saying they were necessary. He only stated that they wouldn't have been so unpopular if they had kept Congress in the loop. I'd have to agree. I only disliked Bush (and Cheney) because they thought that they alone should make decisions for this country. And this country was not founded upon that principle. This country was founded SO THAT ONE BRANCH OF THE GOVT COULD NOT MAKE ALL OF THE DECISIONS. That said, yes I do agree that some of the measures taken by Bush-Cheney were necessary. I just don't like how it was undertaken.

This is more of the same rubbish we have heard for the last 8 years. If you want to worry about something, try cancer or a number of other calamities that really could affect you. Tragic as it was, about 3,000 people died on 9/11. The toll in Gaze will reach this number. People - lift up your heads and rememeber what FDR said "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

Terrorists fire rockets into Gaza, Isreal patiently endures over 5000 such attacks in 1 yeas time and you want to worry about the deaths that may result from retaliation? If you don't punch the bully in the mouth, the bully then controls you...make an omlette, gonna have to break some eggs (and terrorists BEHIND!) Sorry, those are the rules the enemy plays by...most liberals try to change the rules of the game when they can't win, well I nominate you to go discuss the "New Rules" for dealing with terrorists...Sound good to you?

Wow can the author get anymore brown on his nose? He needs to hope Obama doesn't stop suddenly or this guys head is going to do a disappearing act.

This op-ed love fest piece is being passed off as political news? Why not title it "I hate Republicans" and get it over with?

Since none of us have sat in on any of the meetings and discussions that take place behind closed doors in the white house or where ever else private and secret talks may take place, I think its fair to say whether under the Bush Presidency or Obama's Presidency the only information we have to go on is what is being said by the media and that which the white house wants us to know...maybe. We the american people elect an individual for Presidnet whom we feel represents the vision we seek, however there is an incredible amount of secrecy that is very much a part of that job (asumming its a matter of national security of course). At any rate, there is sure to be some identifiable changes taking place with our incoming President, Barack Obama. Now is the time to work together as one nation, united for the cause - keeping the American People safe and prosperous.

I would like to thank President Bush and Vice President Cheney for keeping us safe. My thanks to you include all of my family and friends who know that it takes a superior person to do what is right for the country when others would try to say that it is wrong. I believe that President Bush and Vice President Cheney were the right people, at precisely the right time, to do what was necessary to provide this protection and safety to all citizens, including those who claim that it was wrong. I believe anyone who thinks otherwise, should relocate to the Middle-East zone, so they can join their comrades in arms over there; who by the way, do not follow any humane pattern when afflicting injury or death to us or anyone else in the world. If they would live peacefully, then there would be no need for us to provide such protection.

In witch hunts they used to torture their victims until they agreed they were guilty, and then they were ceremoniously burned at the stake.

I'm 50/50 on the torturing thing, myself, fearing for the safety of this great country. But it makes you think, doesn't it?

I must congratulate Mr. Taylor and Mr. Thomas for this article. It is masterfully written unambiguously, as it provides the reasder with glimpses into the perspectives of both camps, while still being informative enough to allow us to come to our own conclusions. National Security is indeed a murky subject, but one that each of us must find our own convictions about. Some would die rather than sacrifice their given civil liberties, while others are willing to be at risk in order to keep their neighbors safe. Both mnidsets are to be praised, but we as a nation must find some common ground and find some way to do the impossible, which their authors of this article have already done. To keep our emotions out of the discussion.

One lesson to be learned from the Bush/Cheney administration - don't manufacture false truths. Respect, don't circumvent, our laws, obey them - they are there to protect us. If they are not protecting us, enact new ones that do.

The liberal media better start showing the better things in this country or it is not going to matter what Obama does. He was there child so they better show him in a good light. I did not vote for him but i hope he can turns things around and with all the money he is going to throw at it, it better. Just remember we are going to have to pay for it sooner or later and no matter if you voted for him or not he is your president and he deserves our support and respect. That is one thing this country and especially liberals have forgotten.

Just like you respected Clinton I bet. Ironically and hypocritically, the undertones of your post already say otherwise to your message. I won't hope that you even understand what is said here, but read carefully, and slowly.

Abuses ?!? How ridiculous !!! I don't care how many terrorosts get waterboarded or strung up by their fingernails, or whatever - these terrorists HAVE NO civil rights !!!!!!!! Whatever Bush is guilty of domestically, and yes he did a poor job here, both he AND Congress - he and his administration kept another 9/11 from happening to us.

Lord only knows what will happen once Obama pulls a Bill Clinton and starts dismantling the military and coddling the terrorists.

you don't seem to understand that it isn't terrorists, its supposed terrorists, which is a category that can include just about anyone if the power of the governement gets out of hand. I am a conservative as they come, which means I don't want my goverment having the power to torture supposed anythings. Less government power is the keystone of the conservative ideaolgy

I would like to thank Bush for his service to this country and making the hard decisions that only he can make even thoe it was not popular amongst the majority. Its take alot of guts to do the right thing instead of the popular thing.
