There is nothing wrong with protecting the country, with the exception that protection is not transformed into a level of abuse by those granted authority to provide that protection. Mismanagment, and no acountability for actions executed in a time of war can lead to such abuses, causing uneccessary sufering, tortue, and even death where it was to be prevented. There is hard evidence that such abuse took place in the Iraq war. To not have accountability for these abuses among ourselves would demonstrate a level of hypocracy. We should not become what we are fighting against.

So what your saying is that it's OK for the enemy to CUT HEADS off on national TV, but it's not OK for us to use water torture????

  • Posted By: cabebet @ 01/14/2009 6:07:56 PM

Yeah spank em just don't let everybody know you're doing it

  • Posted By: aypiw @ 01/14/2009 6:07:26 PM

saying Bush "made a few mistakes"...is like saying Carter "makes a few pills"

There is absolutely nothing complicated about torture. It is illegal. No exceptions.

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 01/14/2009 11:03:53 AM

It's much more complicated than that. Im not advocating torture, yet i believe that occasionally it may be the only viable option. Now, is it illegal? Yes. Should it be illegal? Yes. Should those who engage in torturing be held accountable? Yes. Stay with me though; if a person is concerned solely with the protection of this country, and they feel that torture is the only way to protect America, than they should do it for the country they strive to protect, yet they should accept the repercussions this country swears to enforce, in accordance with its underlying values, as a small price to pay. It's a selfless, noble, and honorable notion, which may not sit well with many on both sides of the issue, but there are times when the bravest will sacrifice themselves for the good of all.

That makes absolutely no sense. If it's wrong, it's wrong.

agree with mrzoid - make good rules that honor the Geneva Concentions - but there mey be the exceptioinal case that requires us to look the other way........just do it !

Many a parent has willingly borne the legal consequences of breaking a law in order to save the life of their child. You might do the same. Whether the rationalization is morally right or wrong, they would rather live in prison (or die), knowing they did all they could to protect their child.

I didn't know that editorials could be cover stories. How about pulling your latte' sipping head out of your rectum and just report the news. An uncomfortable feeling of water in your nose is not torture. Torture is trying to decide weather you want to spent the last 30 seconds of your life in a burning building or free falling from the 30th floor. WAKE UP!!! We have not done enough to find the info that these people have, all because of a couple of you left over hippies that are bent on socializing the country. Please break out of your lib mold and get your info from some other sources, try talking to some Service men.

Which one of you is sleeping with Obama? I would advise whoever is in Obama's pants, to get out and start doing some REAL journalism...like reporting the facts. I know, I know, that sounds crazy, but maybe you could just TRY to report something accurate. Anyone with half a brain knows that all of our problems aren't the fault of Bush and/or Cheney. In fact, I would go even further to say that we would have a lot more had they not done the work they did.

  • Posted By: Alzata @ 01/14/2009 6:02:00 PM

Now you guys talk about how Clinton did similar if not worse things (lots of renditions, targeted killings, etc.) than Bush. To mention now that maybe Bush and Cheney did the right thing to protect us does not excuse your insidious 8 years of attack journalism. Where was that even-handed good old real fair print journalism for the last 8 years!? You guys are pathetic. Almost all the news is editiorial today. I don't really know how you folks can sleep at night.

They made some very grave mistakes related to the ideologies behind their actions. All the bull in the world cannot erase the situation we are now in: economic ruin with expensive wars in progress and a tremendous amount of profit made by a few at the expense of the rest of the nation, at the expense of what our nation stands for, a loss of the strong standing we use to have in the world, the loss of an effective foreign relations, the loss of the governments position of protecting citizens from being taken advantage of by special interests and schemers run rampant with schems related to credit and investments and with special interests effecting government decisions to favor themselves via gaining favor via campaign contributions and offerings of benefits which are legally questionable, especially if the spirit of the law is considered important. We are in a great mess, internally and abroad, and it is not by coincidence. The terrorists have succeeded in manipulating our nation into ruining itself from within via our own extremism and lowering ourselves to the level of those who use violence to damage others and cause terror in others trying to effect desired results with little success and lots of violence and damage. It has been a horrible way to behave and has left us in a horrible situation. Would "Made off" please send me some of the precious jewels?

Asymmetric warfare calls for the cost effective approach(most banf for the buck). I'm getting tired of the myth that we haven't had an attack since 9/11. With over 4,000, killed and 30,000 wounded, along with 120,000 PTSD cases, terrorists haven't found it necessary to buy a ticket to come all the way over here when they can do more damage just walking out their front door. Bush/Cheney have proably gotten more of our best Americans killed than if they had not violated the Geneva Convention. Their faces are on all the terrorist recruiting posters and they have been quite effective at recruitment, even though Bush can't pronounce the word.

All of these bloggers are blooming idiots (except me). They're radical, ignorant and abusive of their rights. And they can't spell, have bad grammar....I could go on and on, but I don't have enough time in my busy day...

I may not agree with everything Bush and Cheney did, but because of them I could go to sleep at night and feel safe.
I've felt less and less safe the closer it gets to Obama taking over.
I don't care what the government has to do to keep my way of life safe, that's what I pay tax's for.
I've never felt that I had to sleep with one eye opened and look over my shoulder all the time, but thats how I feel now with Obama taking over.
This country needs a leader that is not afraid to do what ever it is that has to be done to keep us safe.
Obama does not have that kind of track record.

The Emperor Has No Clothes. Red Ink and Red blood are his agenda, stated in advance, whitewashed and glorified by media lies. We are not a nation of two parties, especially two corrupt powermongering and warmongering parties. It is all illegal.

Cheney et al are hiding behind covert actions of self profit in the name of anti-terrorism.
That is why a better man will soon be in charge.
Obama is no fool; I doubt he needs Cheney's counsel.
Bush/Cheney have destroyed our economy, so they talk of terrorism.
What about regulating the banks, etc, Mr. Cheney??

    • Posted By: EMC3 @ 01/14/2009 5:57:45 PM

Interestingly, if you do your homework, you'll find that the law that lifted Glass-Steagall and contributed to the current banking abuses was signed by Clinton, not Cheney.

OMG, Obama hasn't even gotten into office and already he's being called a cowardly democrat by a good majority of you in this discussion board. For crying out loud, give him a break. Let's see what happens, then open the flappin jaw. If he doesn't do so great, fine, blab all you want, but just let the man do his job. Yes, newsweek got a little carried away with the Bush/Cheney bashing, but the main focus of the article is what Obama faces when coming into office. Like bush or not, support Obama or not, nothing matters now, whats done is done. Obama's going to be our next president and Bush did make a few mistakes as does every president. Why do we have to keep finger pointing and accusing democrats or accusing republicans?!?! Most of the registered democrats don't even agree with all the cookie cutter beliefs of true democrats anyway and vise versa with republicans. And just so you know and I am not a democrat nor a republican. I am an independent. So stop the bipartisain BS and start handling the problems this country is facing instead of complaining. Many of you have no grounds to bash until he gets a chance to either prove you right or prove you wrong, so until then Obama bashers...shut up!!!!!

The idea od not using harsh and inhumane treatment is to keep others from applying it to one of us when we are captured. There are countless ways to interrogate. 1. We will need a skilled interrogators. Not yes men. We don't have that with this administration.
