I'm one of those progressive liberals that the conservatives rant and rave about. But I think this article sets out some sobering and thought-provoking opinions about the murky gray areas of national security. I agree that if Bush/Cheney had leveled with the people and with Congress, their reputations would never have gotten so bad, in spite of the poor judgement I think they exhibited over and over again on just about every issue you can name.

There is nothing wrong with protecting the country, with the exception that protection is not transformed into a level of abuse by those granted authority to provide that protection. Mismanagment, and no acountability for actions executed in a time of war can lead to such abuses, causing uneccessary sufering, tortue, and even death where it was to be prevented. There is hard evidence that such abuse took place in the Iraq war. To not have accountability for these abuses among ourselves would demonstrate a level of hypocracy. We should not become what we are fighting against.

Are you kidding me Skipper65? What if any of those guys are innocent? The majority of the people locked up are just suspected of being terroists. And lets be honest, our men were toutrued during vietnom when they were captured. -Bamboo under the fingernails anyone?-- And we HATED them for it. Now were doing somthing just as rough to people that were not 100 percent sure are combatents.

Tourtre is wrong, period. "Terroist" or not.

I didn't know that editorials could be cover stories. Please pull your latte' sipping head out of your rectum. An uncomfortable feeling of some water on your head is not torture. Torture is having to decide weather you want to spend the last 30 seconds of your life burning in a building or free falling from the 30th floor of that building while praying that your family knows that you love them. The only injustice that The obama administration can do to the country is to nothing or pretend he is doing something

Lot's of assumptions here, but not much content. After Obama was elected I thought that at least the media would get over the Bush-bashing. But all that ALL of you (the liberal press) are doing is gearing up so that if Obama makes a mistake you can still blame Bush. Bush has made some mistakes, but he's done a lot right and he does not lack courage. And that is what this is really about - courage always bothers cowards.

Would anyone read the news if it was positive? The media dominates with fear stories, name calling stories and more of the same. Now that Obama is getting good press, the name callers are working overtime to turn the positive into negatives. Will we ever learn to look out for ourselves and others? Attacks are not helpful, verbally or physically.
There is an oldie, but goodie song that says Accentuate the Positive, Eliminate the Negative. Oh, if only.......if only we could live in a less angry, fearful, emotionally charged world! Humnnn wonder what would happen!!!!

I am sorry to say but I think Bush did an ok job the last years in office and I believe that because we went and had this war on Terrisom, we showed to other countries that we are not going to take the terrisom.... THEY HAVE NO CIVIL RIGHTS ......Bush has not done a perfect job here, but neither has any otherpresident they have also made mistakes but one thing is true that Bush and his asministration has protected the United States of America and we have had no terrisom attacks on us... I do not think that Obama can take a stand for this country.

Wow - no one took a basic philosophy class in college. I'm thinking college might be too far a stretch for many of these commenters. Well, to put Kant's universal maximum into understandable terms, think of the golden rule. Part of why we don't waterboard others is so that our citizens are less likely to endure such abuse abroad. But I guess I forgot that Republicans are the "might is right" crowd. I wonder what they'll think in 10 years when America is no longer the superpower.

Interesting that this is a non-biased news story! What ever happened to keeping personal opinions out of the news???

I keep an old Irish coin for good luck, and bad things keep not happening to me. My point? Only a fool takes credit for what has NOT happened Let's talk instead about how Bush/Cheney's reckless spending has driven us into the ground at the precise time when many of our cities need an influx of money to repair the crumbling infrastructure. Who is going to take credit for the deregulation that has robbed us, and how will we restore confidence in investment and savings?

I'm not interested in listening to Bush/Cheney's efforts to rewrite history and cast themselves as heroes. It's Animal Farm all over again.

Cheney and Bush have made billions on this "war" and they hide behind protecting the country.
    Do not forget Haliburton, etc.
    Who profitted??
Cheney has nothing left to say but to discuss terrorism. He has hid behind it for eight years.
If there are future investigations into this administration, some truth will come out; just like Wall Street, NY !!!
