Obama just needs to defend the Constitution as he will be sworn to do. A few months of reviewing what has actually kept us safe will likely conclude that warrentless wiretapping and torture did not and would not protect us from actual attacts. An incarcerated terrorist with any knowledge automatically renders those plans abandoned. Sure that terrorist talked, why not, he could hurt plans that will never be and he gets better treatment. Time to replace our "24" fixated geniuses.

Learning exactly what a terrorist knows garners more information than you'll ever know.

Just because a terrorist is incarcerated doesn't mean they're only out of the game and no longer effective. Nor does it also mean that what they were a part of is rendered obsolete.

Tradecraft, procedure, affiliation and more all lend towards the bigger picture and how they think, how they work and why.

Equate it with sports - teams and coaches spend hours practicing and observing (game plays) so they can be more effective. Now obviously the techniques are different when you're dealing with a terrorist (group) but so much intelligence work is based around observation and experience on how to handle something when it happens or to stave off an attack.

However if the new administration hamstrings the intelligence agencies ability to work and provide the warfighter (the tip of the spear) with the information they need.....I may have to apply to the CIA since I'm sure they'll be surfing the Internet, having long BBQs in the back yard and much (needed) time off!

Thank you George Bush and Dick Cheney for your aggressive pursuit of terrorists and terrorism, and for having the "spine" to stand up against those (many of them writing here) who would happily see Americans burn in order to defend foreign born terrorists who have zero constitutional rights.

The lack of ANY organized terrorist attack on the US is a testimony to the effectiveness of the Bush administrations policies in this regard, and history will surely recognize this as GWB's greatest achievement.

    Well done!

      You are absolutely right, Jimbo.

Woner how long it will be before there is another attack here. Heard on the radio today that - SURPRISE, SURPRISE - some of the detainees released from Gitmo have apparently been involved in terrorist attacks again.

Im sure you meant to refer to the lack of ANY organized terrorist attack on the USA after 9/11, which was the largest terrorist strike on America in our nations history. Hey, that ones easy to forget though.

      HAW HAW!

This is great. Could you slobber a little more, please?

Too bsd commentators are so ignorant they cant spell. I am tired of the politics of fear. We have a lot to fear, yes, but so do our enemies. Lets stop all the speculation...do we get daily briefings? Hardly. Lets work on keeping our people safe but also on getting rid of corrupt politicians, and corporate greed. There is plenty of work to be done...and who is safe on this planet anyway?

Interesting that this is a non-biased news story. Whatever happened to keeping personal opinion out of the news???

awful easy to have all the answers when you have not had the responsibilities
Obama will get to find out how easy the job of president is
    The job is getting closer
Yup here comes another Bill Clinton
I dont think all the people that voted for him have a clue what they did
George Bush has certainly kept us safe and in his place i am sure others would of made some of the same mistakes but he has kept us safe
I too agree terrorists have no rights they steal ours and because we are americans we have to be better than them Bull HOcky lets play their game and make the rules up as we go along

You make the case that since 9/11 we haven't had any more attackes because the Bush/Cheney administration have done there job. Bin Laden wanted two things; one, the economic demise of the western world and two, to raise a larger army for himself. The Bush administration has been doing exactly what Bin Laden has wanted. Who is winning? Yes the world is becoming a scarier place. I hope now we will have a leader who will think about the consequences of actions as a mature intelligent adult. We know that Cheney has always wanted for the excutive branch to have the 'POWER' and see what we get with only one of the 3 branches ruling. Many mistakes and aquired through down right lies and paranoia. There were so many smart thigs to do. One example was to work with other countries in keeping the atomic bombs at bay. We have wanted to go it alone when we had so many countries to help us work on intelligence to root out the ones that want to destroy the wesyern world.

Santorinii- There is paranoia in this country alright, just look in the mirror. No doubt Bush has a lot of failures but the fact is we HAVEN'T been attacked again- you crediting Bin Laden for no more attacks is mind-boggling.

I guess, by your story, you are required to be a devot Democrat to work for newsweek. It shows how cowardly Democrats are. Your post show how newsweek is nothing but a cowardly news soruce.

You're an idiot. The government should tell the American people what their doing to protect their liberties????? And in doing so also let the terrorists know what your going to do to them if you catch them. And not to mention what were doing to their terrorist buddies while in our captivity........Thank God your not the Commander in Chief with the job of defending my freedom.

I'm not going to even finish this one... Everything I keep hearing from the media about slam bush this praise Osama Obama that, it is sickening! We all need to understand that war is war, it is not something you tip-toe around and worry about how people feel. Obviously you don't go around needlessly "murdering" inoccents, but guess what? Radical Islam does go around needlessly murdering innocents so... To all of you out there who may read this and say well he's a right-wing wacko know this, I do not praise everything bush did nor will you ever hear me say this, but the real issue right now is Obama's citizenship, im not going to sit here and give any of you closed-minded peoples any sympathy go to WND.com or renewamerica.us if you even take the time out of your stressful or busy lives to do it! I'll bet none of you do!

IN TYPICAL NEWSWEEK FASHION AN ARTICLE PRETENDING TO BE NEWSWORTHY IS FILLED WITH OPINIONS NOT FACTS. WHY NOT PUT IT ON THE EDITORIAL PAGE. IT'LL BE INTERESTING TO SEE HOW YOU DESCRIBE THE ATTEMPTS BY THE "CHOSEN ONE" ADMINISTRATION TO KEEP US SAFE. IT'LL EVEN BE MORE INTERESTING TO SEE HOW YOU "REPORT" AN ATTCK ON AMERICAN SOIL IF OBAMA, BIDEN, PANETTA, ET AL REDUCE OUR AGENCY'S ABILITY TO ROOT OUT TERRORIST PLOTS.

"...it is quite apparent that binLaden achieved just what he set out to do....cause utter paranoia in this country."

Maybe at a government level, with officials at the top (including the President) detaining anyone and everyone they come across that could have even a hypothetical connection to a known terrorist or terrorist group - but I'm fairly certain that the populace of this country have moved on since the latter days of 2001.

There may be individuals who are still preparing their underground shelters, a modern homage to those who sought safety in the infant years of the Nuclear Age, as they brace for the next, "epic" terrorist assault. But for the most part, it seems the country is less paranoid as they are strapped for cash.

There is always something that "the general population" will worry themselves over. Early in the decade, it were terrorists and their suicidal efforts. Now it's something altogether - economic crises and personal apocalypses.

bin Laden only achieves anything when the media grants him his fifteen minutes of fame every time he releases a new tape about a Jihad.

bla, bla, bla, typical Bush-Cheney paranoia and hate. I can't wait until Buch is a distant memory so i am not reminded of the corruption of the press. I remeber having the same thought at the end of Clintons term. [And now there back on the scene]

National security has been the excuse for terrible abuse all over the planet. The concerns of a majority of Americans regarding a government out of control in its ability to intrude in the lives of ordinary citizens, detain them without formulation of charges, occasionally send them to foreign countries for harsh interrogation, torture them and ruin their lives are very real. The columnist is somewhat cynical, and quite glib, insinuating that "liberals" may be disingenuous in decrying these practices. As a lawful and engaged American citizen of South American origin, the author's rationalizations terrify me. Let's not assume we have some God-given guarantee against oppresion by our own elected government, and let's remain vigilant, lest we degenerate like so many countries have.

And so we see the reality of presidential rule in our nation... candidates position themselves one way to get the nomination... another way to get elected... and when our newest president-elect truly came to understand our nation's domestic and international pluses and particularly the negatives... and the hair on the back of his neck was standing straight up, he became just what we needed. Welcome aboard, Barack Hussein Obama-Bush-Cheney!

Whats the matter, you two can't write lies on your own. I suppose you would rather have Americans die than to do every thing you can to stop terrorist. Would you have them blow up a few schools and kill a lot of children so that you will be sure that they are really terrorist. Or would you use the appropriate interrogation methods to stop this before it happens. I'm willing to bet that neither one of you have ever been in the Military. You are nor worthy. What has been diminished is journalism.
