LOL. Of course, Bush faced no "foreign policy dilemmas", it was "so simple" for him and he didn't face "difficult choices".

Perhaps if the liberal partisan media had treated Bush then the way Obama is being treated now, he wouldn't be viewed so negatively and neither would the US.

Giving Obama credit for continuing to do the things for which Bush has been villified by the opinion shapers is outrageous but predictable. Thankfully, Obama has cowed to internal Democrat power structure (Clintons), installing their security team instead of his own actual idealogues (Ayers, Wright, etc.). Let's hope he matures quickly. The media's free pass may retard the process, but the realities of actual bad guys accross the big pond who despise him for merely being an American, might do the trick.

Giving credit to Obama for continuing to do the things for which Bush was disdained by opinion shapers is well under way. Thankfully, Obama has moved from the naive campaign rhetoric which so inspired his anti-Bush base.

What everyone needs to understand is that the terrorists do not play by our rules so we cannot tie our hands or be naive. They will do whatever it takes to achieve their objectives, which is to destroy the American people and their way of life. Unfortunately that means we must do less than savory things to try and stay ahead of the curve. If that means losing our right to privacy, so be it. I think we must continue monitoring phone calls and all types of communication because there have been many plots thwarted by this method than we will ever know. To tie our hands by being the nice guy will result in many deaths and then the same people who complained about the methods will demand answers as to why we didn't do more. It is a no win situation so better to step on toes than to bury bodies.

All I can say is - "Good luck Obama!! We are about to see the other side of all the political stories. Remember, there are two sides (at least) to every story. We are now going to see another side of the Bush-Cheney story. It isn't going to be all bad. It should be an interesting time for the United States. And ir would be interesting to see if the American people will hold the press accountable for slanting stories and not reporting objectively.

    To David Brown:

Sorry my friend, but we live in a different world. While it would be nice if we didn't have to worry about terrorists blowing up thousands of people, the cruel reality is we do. The simple fact of the matter is, these policies have saved lives, and it is exactly that reason that Obama choose to renew the wiretapping legislation, and the same reason that he will continue most of the Bush administration's policies.

When the blood of thousands or millions of people is potentionally on your hands, the idea of a perfect world goes up in smoke either one way or another.

    • Posted By: WidernessVoice @ 01/13/2009 9:13:33 AM

What nonsense! Current terrorists are not nearly as bad as Nazis, and other foes we have faced. Terrorists should have been treated as criminals, not as enemy countries. Bush and Cheney gave them that power in order to get away with grabbing power for themselves, and too many people still buy that malarkey. This is a tactic as old as government, and you fell for it!

"The simple fact of the matter"
What facts. You have none. Nada.
Were is your proof that the techniques of Bush-Cheney saved any lives or the U.S. terrorist attacks? How do you know that the Middle Eastern terrorists, actually fueled by Bush Administration policies as most global security experts agree, are not just behind the scenes plotting the next attack?

So the source or the quality of your information doesn't matter? If you're an omniscient God, I would agree, but then you would likely be omnipotent also so it wouldn't be a problem anyway. For the rest of us more fallible types, I want a slightly higher burden of proof. Even confessions are often suspect (especially when obtained under torture). I'm sorry, you want the easy way out because you believe you can't be on the wrong end of the process. Apparently you've never been wrongly accused. Even in our system that's not a lot of fun. In the one you're proposing it's a nightmare.

I was a senior intelligence analyst for a number of years (North Korea as a specialty) and I was always trained that intelligence reports gained by coercion had only one use --- to keep coffee stains off the bottom of your waste basket.

personaly I think all of the detainees should be held indeffinately, and under no circumstance, should they be brought to the united states for a trial. They are fighting against our way of life....so they should not be able to bennifit from our freedoms. They do not believe in freedom...so they should not be granted OUR FREEDOMS. As far as the terrorist go....in my book....they have no rights.....they want to be treeted as war prisoners...then they should wear uniforms so they can be identified...(an shot)...instead of hiding among civilians, like cowards.

  • Posted By: WidernessVoice @ 01/13/2009 9:08:43 AM

I really struggle with this. We all know that terrorists could easily have brought in dirty bombs, etc. in container ships (95% are not inspected) or by foot across either border. It does not make sense to me that our government has actually stopped terrorists. I have to conclude that Osama blew his wad on 9/11 (remember, there had never been a major terrorist attack before that, except the failed attempt to take down the twin towers), and that is why we have had no attacks. The far right has also been quiet, although the Timothy McVeiigh's are not on any terror watch list!). So, it looks to me like they were more lucky than good.

Unless youbeleive that all the judges who heard and rejected the arguments that PE Obama is not eligible to become President,, including members of the Supreme Court, are engaged in a grand conspiracy, logic suggests that those who cliing to the ""he's not eligible" argument should ffind another way to express their dissatifact with the outcome of the last election.

Unless you believe that the judges who heard the cases regarding PE Obama's place of birth, including members of the Supreme Court, were all engaged in a giant conspiracy, its time to find another way to express your displeaure at the outcome of the last presidential election.

The stain on the US is we have an un-naturalized citizen being President. The man is part of the Chicago mob, has lied his way to get there. Barry Soetoro is a raciest hated by many Americans.

The best thing for the US is to find Obama's birth certificate and send him back to Kenya.

Terrorists have not attacked the US since 9/11? These "spooks" really do need to be retired. What about the Washington sniper, the anthrax attacks (never did figure out who was behind those), not to mention the assassination of Laurence Foley in Jordan, the bombing outside the US consulate in Karachi, and literally thousands of incidents of terrorists attacking US personnel in Iraq with IEDs, small arms and a host of other weapons? These don't count as terrorists attacking the US? Terrorism has been with us for a long time, thousands of years, and it will always be with us. (Remember the Munich olympics? Remember Wall Street on September 16, 1920? Remember President McKinley? The only way to prevent terrorists from doing harm is effective law enforcement. Torture is pouring gas on the fire.

    • Posted By: BOFORCE @ 01/13/2009 5:37:03 AM

Law enforcing and good policies...........not instigating people to resort to terrorism.

  • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 01/12/2009 1:11:10 PM

There is absolutely no excuse for torture. None. That applies equally to both terrorist criminals who whack peoples' heads off, and American criminals who waterboard people.

    • Posted By: Repubssuck @ 01/12/2009 1:55:04 PM

Hi doc, that's easy to say. Does that mean you can't come up with one instance where you might use torture? And leave me out of it, please. What if it saved the 4000 plus lives lost in iraq or the 3000 plus we lost in New York?

      • Posted By: deadhorse @ 01/13/2009 12:09:40 AM

There are no instances where I would use torture, not only because it would debase my (our) principles and dignity, though aslo because it is ineffective...... Soldiers and insurgents alike are trained to lie in these situations. You can beat someone down until they confess to starting the Chicago fire, though that doesn't make it so. So all the nail prying and private part shocking is fruitless, when they are merely telling telling you what you want to hear. IThe most effective way to obtain information is through peychology, get inside their heads, earn their trust, make an insidious deal that you have no intention of keeping; all of these soplutioins are much more effective and honorable than torutre. Such archaic acts are benieth any civilized country.....................

      • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 01/12/2009 1:59:47 PM

"Does that mean you can't come up with one instance where you might use torture?"

Not a single one. Can you think of one instance where you would support rape?

      • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 01/12/2009 1:58:37 PM

"Hi doc, that's easy to say."

It was easy to do, for 220 years. But I am to believe that suddenly, everything is different. The founders were just men, like you and I. If they could live up to their principles when threatened with a noose, we can live up to them when threatened with a nebulous terrorist threat.

  • Posted By: Mwalimu @ 01/12/2009 9:25:37 PM

Please let's set the facts straight.
First of all, Dick Cheney insisted that the vice president was an independent entity and not part of the executive branch. Secondly, all of Dick Cheney's "secrecy" had nothing to do with national secrecy. It was merely a cover up for various crimes, form the price gouging of Enron and Halliburton to the outing of CIA agents. In fact, during the campaign of 2008, most pundits were insisting that a terrorist attack on American soil would help McCain and the GOP get elected. so Cheney actually had a vest interest in permitting an attack on American soil.

And let's not forgot that 9/11 occurred during Bush and Cheney's watch. There were warnings of a terrorist attack all during August, but what did Bush or Cheney do? Nothing. They indeed had a vested interested in 9/11. First they could use 9/11 to justify the war in Iraq. Secondly, Halliburton and other defense contractors could and DID rob this country blind.
Abu Ghraib was a total fiasco. According to Red Cross estimates, up to 90% of the detainees in Abu Ghraib had were not terrorists. Some were common thugs and criminals; for others, their only crime was living in Iraq. While we were using enhanced torture techniques to get information from these detainees - information most of them did not have - real terrorists were wreaking havoc on our troops. Is this any way to run a military operation?
Similarly, the guidelines set out by the FISA Court do permit some degree of wire tapping without a warrant. However, these guidelines are there for a reason. They enable personnel in NSA to hone in on real leads rather than phony nonsense. Furthermore, Cheney and the GOP had weird ideas about terrorists. The Bush administration labeled NEA a terrorist organization. Many Republicans even today believe that homosexuals are as great a terror threat as al Qaeda. As a result, NSA officials wasted their time tracking down union teachers who were speaking to their students' parents in Spanish, or worse, eaves dropping on intimate conversations between troops in Iraq and their wives and girl friends, hoping perhaps to catch gays in the act of hooking up. So while various right-wing, Republican NSA agents were engaged in this form of prurient titillation, real terrorists were free to plot mayhem.
While I do understand that Obama will need to navigate various gray areas to secure this country, I am also glad that he will proceed prudently and cautiously. Cheney's disregard for the niceties of the Constitution did NOT make us safer. The current debacles in Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Gaza are all products of Cheney's evil genius.
Rather than getting lauded as a hero, Cheney really needs to be tried for war crimes.
