So torture works just fine over the long run on just about anybody and to say otherwise is just another evil thing that those damned of god liberal say. Better yet just assert as a truth - and so it is true. What a crock. Anybody care to do an honest risk analysis of the so called tortured prisoner "dilemma"? So all were determined enemies, despite a capture process obviously as flawed as the torture methods themselves. So all really want to take revenge, just a neo-con. Realistically, what can they do? The only way to hurt American troops is to lure them into where they are exposed, like in Iraq for instance. American troops in Kansas are really really hard to touch. Hijack another plane - good luck the doors to the cockpit now lock the way they should have on 9/11 and your fellow passengers will bring you down instantly. That attack vector is effectively blocked. Make a video saying nasty things, like that really hurts. Even if these guys got loose, a) they can't do much on their own, and b) there are already thousands or tens of thousands of their kind all ready running around. It's not like they possess nuclear secrets, or better yet where all the money scammed from the US Treasury in the name of TARP has been buried. The "threat" they pose is virtually non-existent. The terrible dilemma is a crock, or at least no worse than the American torturers who are still active and avoiding war crimes trials. So what goes here? No moral basis, no reality either.

MaryjoK: Then why didn't we invade Sudan instead, where the genocide causes Iraq to look like and episode of the Love Boat? Oh, that's right, I guess it was an oil driven pursuit after all. A stronghold in the Middle East seems like a good Imperial strategy, too. Long live the American Empire!

    • Posted By: MaryjoK @ 01/15/2009 1:44:29 AM

i thought we wern't allowed to invade anyone, well anyone expect which ever celebrity cause dejour is on "the veiw" today. Pimpin the sudan for sympathy is pathetic, what have you done for the people in sudan? whine and cry in nice comfy house, oh bush is so evil, pass me another wine cooler. funny huh, I have given and I continue to give to support the people of the sudan. Maybe bush could have done more to help them had he not been cruicifed the last time he tried to help someone. by the way you know bush has given more to help the african nations fight aids in one year than prince clinton did the whole time he was in. maybe your prettyboy should have gotten his girlfriend out of his lap and done his job. oh wait it's hate speech to critize a liberal.

This article emphasized the most critical thing that need to be obtained in this country when he referenced the Pedulum swinging... Balance. We have none now. We're all like a bunch of "Star bellied Sneeches". Everyone wants to point the finger at eachother never accepting any responsibility for thier own actions. The reality is the future doesn't happen... it is MADE to happen. The sad reality is another terrorist attack on our soil may not even be necessary. In the 7 short since years since 9/11 we've managed to tear ourselves to shreds. But we'll continue to blame bush, blame the liberals, blame the gays, blame god, blame our moms for not breast feeding us. God help and bless us all cause lord knows we're gonna need it. Freedom cost. In this country people will re-finance thier home to buy a boat... and don't even know how to swim. LMAO.

I really can't believe someone would write that 911 happened because of Clinton.....hello!!!!!!....GWB was in office for 9 months before 911 (IN CASE YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND, THIS WAS ON GWB'S WATCH) even happened and it was brought to GWB national security people in the August before 9/11 that the person to watch was Osama and C. Rice pooh-poohed that totally.....also, the financial downfall was Clinton's fault?!?!?!?!....guess it took 8 years after Clinton left office for it to happen, yep, as one recent political savy person, who will remain nameless but was known to say 'you betcha', gotta blame the previous administration for the financial woes of this country because, of course, GWB with his de-regulation and good buddies are not at fault....Again, can't believe anyone with an ounce of intelligence would believe the rhetoric that GWB is blameless when it's so obvious that GWB and his cronies are at fault.......my prayers and thoughts are with Obama daily that he will be able to straighten out the mess GWB and his cronies have left this country in.....

    • Posted By: Westcoast @ 01/15/2009 1:23:07 AM

Actually, it was Clinton who began de-regulating mortgage companies like Fannie and Freddie. He tried have new regulations in place near the end of his term but the dems were reluctant to draw up such a bill that would put limits on the mortgage giants and their risky loan tactics because they were lining the pockets of the dems such as Pelosi. Bush had also tried to put new rules in-place to prevent risky loans and ultimately prevent all the defaults that have happened.

This is an American problem not a right or left problem. I have a question for our CIA, why didn't the CIA establish spy networks within every tribe, group, etc. when the Mujahideen was doing our dirty work in Afghanistan why didn't the CIA infiltrate these people? The truth is our government let us down, we learned after 9/11 that we had no spies in this part of world, the Jews have been fighting these people for ever, when was the last time an Israeli plane was hijacked? we can learn a thing or two from them but to spy on every American is ridiculous you identify your enemy you profile your enemy and you infiltrate your enemy destroying them from within. if we allow our government to spy on us, if we sit back and say or do nothing as our constitution is pushed aside , then our enemy has won, they want us to fear them enough to change who we are, we win when we stand strong and firm for what we believe in. at times like these our bill of rights and our constitution should be our strength, Our way of life is why so many Americans have bleed and died to defend we must not waiver ever!

All of you who are so bent on continuing the shredding of our most sacred documents and laws should know this about the article by Taylor and Thomas. There is a great deal of anger amongst many about what Bush/Cheney have done to subvert the laws of the land. Charles Kaiser, a prominent journalist/professor/media critic who has written for the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, The Washington Post, The New York Observer, and yes, even Newsweek, has decried the Taylor/Thomas article as irresponsible journalism. He states it is a ???regurgitation of the Bush/Cheney exit interviews??? and is being used in order to make it more difficult to prosecute Bush/Cheney and others in high level government positions.

FBI Director Robert Mueller, ???appointed by Bush??? WARNED the Justice Department, the Dept. of Defense, and the CIA that the torture being used (and approved at the highest level of government, ie. Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld, was illegal when he discovered what the administration was doing. He went so far as to pull his own FBI agents out of CIA and/or military interrogations to protect them from the legal consequences. Further, he says torture has not shown any positive results of helpful information in any circumstances of his experience. Again, this from the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a man hired by Bush.

The truth is, in the illegal interrogations, the one common thread of information coming from the detainees is that those who were actually involved with terrorist groups became involved because of the Bush/Cheney torture initiative. Think about it. If an invader or occupier came into our country and used those tactics on you or your family or friends, you???d join the first group that promised revenge on the perpetrators, and you???d be correct in doing so. How many tens of thousands of terrorists exist now because of the choices of Bush/Cheney and their evil cabal of destruction? How many lives have been lost because of them?

    • Posted By: Westcoast @ 01/15/2009 1:00:10 AM

I think you're mistaken. I believe Mueller pulled his agents at the request of the White House since FBI agents were believed to be at the center of a "torture" scandal and were UC agents. Pulling them was simply done to protect their identity plain and simple.

Absolutely amazing! Putting Barak Hussein Obama into office is the equivelant of letting a 6 year old play in a gun shop... This guy obviously has no clue as to what the job requires as shown by his lack of judgement in choices for his cabinet and associations through out his life, and a wife who openly speaks of her lack of pride for the country for which the Obamagasma media elected as first lady. What I find amazing is that he won't give a dime to help his brother, yet my african american freinds are under the impression he's going to give you the world??? I don't get it, but after watching all that's going on now in his former state (IL) I'm starting to understand what a few extra billion can buy you... when will people (liberals) wake up and realize this guy is nothing more than a smooth, stuttering lawyer out to set up himself and his family financially for the future. I just find it sad that the country many men and women have died to keep safe will be now left in the hands of this ignorant child, and as a result millions more could die. This is truly a sad time for America.

Your comments are very slanted. You could start by relying more on truth than all that silly nonsense. I believe that time will prove you wrong and maybe you will develop the fairness to see it. In the meantime, I guess it takes all kinds of thought to make this world go round. Keep well and keep the faith because we're all in this together.

      Hey Joe777,
Pride in your country isn't a requirement especially if your country does some fairly dastardly deeds. (dastardly was a fun word to use.). We can start with the the torture at Gitmo which by treaty with Cuba may only be used as a milatary base, not a prison camp for unindicted, unconvicted potentially innocent individuals. Our constitution was set up so that the guilty may go free so that the innocent are to convicted. The indefinate detainment of individuals that are not charged with crimes is indeed something I am not pround of. The confessions obtained under duress which is unconstitutional is something I am not proud of. I can can continue listing things that make me not proud of this country, however, I think we should all be proud of those who served in all branches of the armed forces during these turnulent times. They served regardless of what their individual conscience might have been, The took their oath's and did that well. Take pride in you fellow americans, take pride in your soldiers but do not be prideful of your government for pride's own sake.

Giving Obama the keys to the white house is no worse than giving the same to G. Walker Bush. What could have gone wrong the past eight years? Oh wait, according to him and his farewell tour, very little. Just a couple of disappointment, like WAR gone wrong. No biggie.

  • Posted By: Mustang Rider @ 01/14/2009 7:23:11 PM

The U.S. has gained world wide recognition and respect by taking the high moral ground. Is it worth compromising those time honored principals in order to obtain a confession? What will we as a Nation gain vs. what will be lost when we are judged for having double standards?

    • Posted By: Westcoast @ 01/14/2009 7:58:56 PM

I respect your view but one thing that I don't understand is what type of enemy do you think we're dealing with? When I think of our enemies I think of those radicals that don't care for peace and only want the death of Americans and Jewish people. For example, look at the current situation in the MidEast between Israel and Hamas. Hamas constantly call for the death of all Jewish people and they carry out actions that show that they're serious about what they say. How can there be peace with these kind of people who think like this? I said Hamas, I know not all Palestinians think like them some or most want an actual peace with their neighbors. For Hamas, the only way there will be peace is if every Jewish person was dead. There truly can be no peace with people like this and that's where the actions like those of our govt's use of getting information to a possible attack is crucial to prevent terrorist attacks like those of 9/11.

It's a slippery slope that we're on... The more questionable acts we commit, the closer we come to being exactly like the enemy we profess to hate. I would prefer for us not to sell our souls to remain "safe". If this is the kind of world we are creating and the kind of example we are setting, are we really creating a "safe" world? Terrorism aside, Bush and his administration have done enough damage to the environment and to our world reputation to make us incredibly unsafe. We are "safe" for the moment, but I fear for my future children and the world they will inherit...

        • Posted By: Westcoast @ 01/15/2009 12:49:45 AM

No offense, but what would you have done if you were president in 2001 during the attacks on 9/11 to protect and prevent another attack? Remember that your family lives in this country. I think Mr. Bush's priorities after 9/11 were the protection of us, his citizens, and he did what he could to achieve that. He's not perfect, but it's like your silbing looking out for you, Your siblings and rest of your family would do whatever to keep someone from harming you, even if it means hurting someone else. That's the way I see at least.

I hate to tell you this, but the US has a spotted history when it comes to taking the "high moral ground". This country's questionable ethics go almost all the way back to its birth, in fact. However, we are definitely not alone, as most countries do whatever is in their best interest as well. The difference is that our country tries to make it seem as though our history is grand. What we need to do is acknowledge our mistakes, do all we can not to repeat them, and hope our government grows a heart. And yes, torture would generally be considered one of those mistakes.

It's interesting to see how so many liberals who post on this board feign outrage at Bush administration policies. As the article points out, Obama, who is now receiving intelligence briefings, has suddenly received a baptism-by-fire of sorts and (hopefully) realizes that lofty rhetoric about protecting the constitutional rights of murderers is not in his, or his country???s, best interest. The naiveté of his ???educated??? supporters, who are seemingly so interested in assisting Jihadists slit the throat of as many innocents as possible, is astounding . . . one can only hope Obama understands this.

I have a feeling I???ll eventually get a chance to say ???See, I told you so??? when more than 3,000 people are murdered in the next attack that comes as a result of well-intentioned, but horribly misguided policies. When that happens, I???ll almost feel good about being right all along.

    Good article, by the way.

"If you vote for him [Kerry] you're going to get hit again, do you wanna get hit again, then vote for him [Kerry]" _ Dick Cheney (Charlatan) 2004 presidentail campaign.

When confronted by Nevile Chamberlan (SP?) Hitler proclaimed that he had to invade Poland, in order to protect his borders from the iminent communist threat, that the Poles were doing nothing about. After all communists burned down the reichstag (this was the claim promoted by the Nazis), therefore everyone must adhere to a police stae for security purposes. Thiose who spoke out against this were denounced for their lack of Patriotism, whereas people like you were waving their flags and singing "Heil Hitler".... Sound familair?

I frequently write my senators, congressmen, write editorials and use what abilities I have to remain politically connected and involved. We are the only ones who can bring about change. Let's hope that President Obama feels morally compelled to clean the mess of Cheney and Bush. Unfortunately Americans and the incoming administration may never know the clandestine operations the outgoing administration used as tools in their quest for 'keeping America safe". We need to clean the slate as much as possible and show the United States as an upstanding member of the global community. That is how we will end the terror threat against this land!

First of all bwhorley, how can you predict history? Do you have a crystal ball. You have no guarantees that the past or the future will be known as the worst or the best. What you forget is that none of these men of the past or of the future are imune from mistakes, poor judgement or inherant problems they were left with....same with Obama - I am sure several years from now he will be blamed for things not created by himself. May I suggest an old movie call "Backstairs to the Whitehouse" you will be shocked at TRUE history of our past Presidents and the strange lives they lead. Do you realize most ran for office because their wives wanted the "status". It is about a maid who worked in the whitehouse and kept a diary....very enlightening how loose our country was conducted in the past and I dare say little has changed. Get it through netflix and just type in the title.

First off, davidlcjr I completely agree with you. That is one of the best posts I have read on this blog. I personally feel this country needs more severe punishment for CONVICTED criminals, not for those who have been locked up for years simply due to their origin. We are heading straight back toward slavery, which seems to be a place the Bush Administration would love to return. His form of slavery is not based only on race, but also financial standing. The poor should service the rich. And Shoresh, there is a reason other nations hate the US so much. With George W, being the main voice these nations hear from the US, can you blame them? We cannot judge a race/religion/country based solely on the leader associated with their residence. If that is the case Americans better not leave our borders with the leaders we have followed for the last 8 years.

Questioin: What is the difference between Bush/Cheney administation vs. the Obama administration?
    Answer: Arrogance

Cheney is not a man to accept the fact that America voted a black man as a President.
Cheney's already eroded respect from his peers only made it worse by comments like this. He will go down in the history as most disrespected vice president. There are many things that I would like to vent my anger, but I will not let myself go down to his level.
