Come on...After the first few paragraphs I had to stop reading to laugh. I pictured a couple of guys who watched Star Wars a few too many times and then compared that fairytail to real life. Now don't get me wrong I love Luke , Han and the gang and voted for Obama in hopes of some new -- world in mind -- thinking, but...Come on. This isn't journalism.

Jomokenyata: I don't know if you are a government agent, but if you are, you have ruined your credibility by making so many illogical and unintelligent comments. You might want to get another screen-name or something.

Jomokenyata: I'm sad for you that you are so comfortable with the government acting in illegal ways without being questioned. If the rest of the populace is as sheepish and complacent as you, those in power would be silly not to abuse their power. Thank God that most of the populace uses their brains a good deal more effectively than you. I pray for your enlightenment. I hope you go to bed and get a good night's rest. Also, get plenty of exercise and watch you nutrition. It's good for the brain. Try to not watch so much TV.

The Writers of this article have absolutle know clue what it means to be free. The rule of law is suppreme. 1 If no normal court could not convict a person of a crime then they are inocent ans should be set free. Holding people prisoner without out trial is a gross injustice that this country was supposed to be against. The constitution is not there just to protect US citsens from the government it is there to protect all people from our government. Rather they do it to us or them it is evil injustices that lead to the great revolution of this country the reson you are free to write this story. I did not serve a country of hipocits and over burdening big brothers. I served a free country that places Personal fredom from our government and any others as top priority. This is a republic and any and all violations of our laws shoud be prosecuted to the fullest extent. If you ask me preaty much all of Bush's Administration belongs behind bars. They are traitors to the constitution and they have layed waste to personal privacy and have labored hard to take away personal fredom. In this country you are free to say, think, and discuss anything with any one for any reason. Until you actualy comit a crime you are inocent. Decent against this government is not treason it is patriotism. Every american owes all who have served and died for this country to question everything out leaders do and hold accountable all those who violate the law. Any thing less is a waste of my free country. Only a liar and a cheat needs to pardon themselfs. Only a socialist comunist bastard would think that what Bush and Cheney have done is fair or right in any sense. The both are nazi socialist power monger Egotistical pycopaths who should be in padded rooms not the white house. I will not rest until the nazi influence in our government is wipped out. My grand father fought socialist nazi pricks and Ill be damed if I will tolerate thier rederic here in the land of the free. No to Government power, No to bailouts, no to socialized medicine, welfare, and retirment. You get what you earn here and nothing more. That is the only way we stay free.

Jomokenyata: I hope your comment was a joke, because this is the small minded babble that some people really think is going to happen. Do you really think you will have a free ticket, no work and life will be fixed for you? Life will remain much the same and possibly worse. If you expect to better your life, get an education, learn to speak English and speak with some intelligence. Work hard, do your part and become politically involved and bring about what change you can - there are no free handouts in America...never have, never will. People are fed up with the freebee systems that are already in place and stealing from those who work, those who don't rely on others to care for them, and those who have some pride in themselves.

I personally don't believe we should close Guantanamo Base. American Citizens do not want these dangerous terrorists in our own backyard. That's like another 9/11 looking for a place to happen. It is idiotic to even contemplate moving those folks to the U.S. What is wrong with politicians, lawmakers, the courts, and Obama anyway? Are they deaf, dumb and blind to what the enemy wants to do to America. The have said it on National and International TV, they hate us (Americans) and want to see us destroyed, just like they want Israel destroyed. Wake up America!! it's later than you think.

Your cover story article, "Obama's Cheney Dilemma" is typical of the Newsweek style of pre-digested baby cereal. It is less informative than it is condensed and less objective than it is opinionated. For example, what is the risk to the national security by letting an as yet innocent man out of prison to rejoin his family and society? Do the authors really believe that the same methods our government information agencies use to spy on their own citizens are somehow inadequate to spy on a potential enemy? This is very reminicent of the thinking that was used by Sen. Joe McCarthy and taken up by the national press during that witch-hunt era. Should the Newsweek editorial staff take credit for the authors' thinly disguised attempt to turn their backs on the public need for credible information and in its place provide the type of rhetoric that feeds on insecurity and fosters public paranoiaa? The public does not even know the conditions and content of the transcript of the criminal-informant's alleged confession that was used to victimize this as yet innocent man. For the well being of our most cherished national belief in a free America, we can only hope that Newsweek's time honored reliance upon sophomoric rhetoric, a style of writing more descriptive of an ill-prepared high school debate team, continues to underestimate the intelligence and curiosities of the American citizenry. In spite of the inept 9/11 failure of the Bush-Cheney regime to keep us secure from foreign invasion and their abject internal invasion into our own private lives, we can still privately reflect as independently and freely as the people of the USSR did during Stalin's reign of terror. We have known for some time now, that in their darkest hours, they could still tell the difference between plausible truth and utter nonsense. Let's pick up the pace Newsweek. - It's "glastnost"...haven't you heard?

You are all idiots. You should get down on your knees and thank God for having President Bush and VP Cheney! When was the last time we were attacked in the US after 9/11? Move if you don't like the very safety and freedom that our military purchased with their blood for us. You live in a country where you can say the things you say without fear of retribution - Move to Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan if you don't like it here - better yet, Pakistan! You are all a bunch of ungrateful liberals who hate the very nation that affords you its comforts. Doubt it? I have travelled all over the world and the one comment that strikes me the most is why don't you Americans appreciate all that you have? You always seem to be haranguing the government that allows you so much. And, most, state that they would gladly trade places. Ask a Nigerian where they would rather live - or basically any African. Do US citizens try to cross over the border to live illegally in Mexico? Are US citizens asking to emigrate to Somalia? Give me a break. Leave if you don't like it. Your freedom was purchased with real blood by men and women who valued giving you your freedoms more than you can understand. Just once I would prefer you just said thank y ou and shut up!

Hey hypocritical idiot! If you don't like the fact that we can say what we can to idiots like you--you should get the hell out of here and go play with the religiously conservative lemmings in the rest of these countries you speak of. There you can kill everyone who doesn't agree with your narrowminded and thickheaded view of things and you will NEVER have to think for yourself and question things around you. Sounds like a paradise for an ignorant F*** like yourself. See you later and don't come back okay?

Dan, criticizing our leadership is not criticizing our country. Separate the two because they are not one and the same. I am extremely critical of the Republican leadership but that by no means signals I hate my country and you are confusing the issue. I am proud that my country has a long tradition of protecting the rights of its people. Sometimes our country has to protect the rights of the minority from the tyrrany of the majority, and vice versa, in the interest of preserving the rights of all.

Where our so-called leadership is concerned, I wouldn't thank bush or cheney for helping me to cross the street. I'd be looking to see what they stole from my pockets or if I had both legs and arms left. They are less patriotic than they are zealots, initerested in protecting the rights of the wealthy. If anything, they have promoted a deeper division between the haves and have-nots. Those of us not in the upper echelons of society have not reaped the rewards of our bountiful nation over the past 8 years. Unfortunately for everyone now, misplaced and misdirected policies, procedures, and tax cuts have led to the present economic event where for the first time in my memory, the weathy have been clubbed by one of their own.

I am a proud American. I live in Beijing. You have one part right, living here makes me want to fiercely protect our freedoms and our greatness as Americans--I can see the effects of the alternative first hand. Freedoms like freedom of speech, greatness like the ideas, innovations, natural checks on abusive power and basic pleasantness of living that come from a diverse society that follows the rule of law instead of the whims of a few. It is always amazing to me how much those that start ranting about "love it as I say or leave it" sound so much like a totalitarian government.

Personally, I have alway thought that the reason that there has been no other "attacks" since 9/11 was simple. That was their best shot and it couldn't be done twice. We're dealing with people with no army, no navy, no air force, and no means of conducting wide ranging attacks on the States. Keep in mind that it is one hell of a long swim frim the Middle East, there never were terrorists hiding in every bush, and since we were in no real danger to begin with, there was no need for the actions taken by Bush and Cheney, who, in my opinion, should be impeached.

wetdog - don't worry about change. here's how it works...give Obama $20 and he'll give you $5 in change. welcome to Marxist Amerika - we are going to become a territory of Cuba.

Yes Cheney abused the executive power, but The executive power laws he had changed and executed wil no longer exist once they are out of office and are civilians again. That is when our government and the American people should and can get them for crimes of war, genecide and all the other illegal activities they havre done while under theirso called executive power privilage. It is time for the American people and our Government that we elect in to represent us to, for once, do their job and show us and the world that people like the Bush administration are not above the law and the great constitution of America. Its going to take the American people to stand up for once and show our government we are done and tired of them thinking they can do whatever they please and get by with it. Other countries can stand together and fight what is right and illegal. WHY CANT WE????? Americans hand in hand can change our country ourselves and rid out the bad of our government, there are laws and its in our constitution that we can do this so GOD BLESS America and lets stand hand in hand and stop the corruption of our government.

Bush and Cheney have done everything they could to destroy this great nation. Not to say it was intentional, but these two men listened to no one else. They were convinced that their thoughts and ideals were not just the best way, but the only way to go. Anyone who honestly believes that their personal opinions overshadow the combined opinions of the billions around them are set for disaster. To lead a nation without listening to those working for and living in that nation leads to significant problems. I have absolutely no problem with religious beliefs, but I do have a problem with a man leading this nation who feels God speaks to him personally. A man who's view of God seems to be eerily similar to his view of himself always is a concern to me. Look at the most dangerous leaders in the history of this world and they all had similar views. Hitler, Stalin and Hussein were convinced they had direct contact with a greater power and G.W. is convinced he does as well. As far as Cheney goes, I think that man is simply evil. He doesn't even want to hide it. Do it my way or F**K you! This country has been lead by 2 men very similar to those we are supposedly chasing in this "War On Terror", Look at the personality traits of the many violent evil leaders throughout the history of the world and you will see these traits: I know the answer and no one may question me, violence gets me what I want and my God is the only God. I'm very excited to see a new leader stepping into office. I wish Obama the best luck and hope he is able to undo some of the catastrophic problems created by this pathetic regime who is handing him their screw ups.

Common sense101---You need to get some common sense. You and all these whiners have not only forgotten 9/11, you have sided with the enemy. You would rather cower than fight. Your comments are nothing more than the usual Rosie Odonnel, misinformed idiot. Spitting back out what the rest of the whiner population shoves down you're throat. By the time we know what the next attack on us will be, there will be tens of thousands dead before we can do a thing and I don't give a *** who we kill to prevent it. You are absolutely delusional. All the problems in the world are not the fault of Bush.

I disagree with the negative interpretation of Mr. Cheney's influence on intelligence policy. Thank God, he was able to partially maintain a cloak of secrecy. Keeping "the people in the dark" is an effective euphemism reinforcing civil libertarians and an over-zealous media. In my opinion, secrecy is necessary to be effective against this type of unpredictable recalcitrant militant fanatical warfare that has the capability to strike inside the United States. Torture should not be glorified as the media loves to do. Most countries don't air their dirty laundry the way we do. Many in our media seem to have difficulty accepting any form of torture. I consider people with those opinions to be niave or self-righteous comtemptorists of the USA. I want to thank Mr. Cheney and his ilk for helping to keep our country safe for the last 7 years. Let's hope it stays that way so the economies of the world can rebound. I can not forget 911. JFK warned us in 1960 during his inaugural speech about the islamic fanatics being one of our biggests threats.

  • Posted By: ASpadeIsASpade @ 01/14/2009 9:18:38 PM

There's only one fact that really matters in the final analysis: due to Bush/Cheney we haven't had another 9/11 on American soil. Love them or hate them, they've done their job in protecting the citizens of the United States. If an entity makes it his sworn duty to kill you, you do what is neccessary to stop him. Trample some civil liberties? Fine, if it stops him. Assassinate a leader/terrorist? Fine, it it stops him. Dribble water on a terrorists nose? Fine, if it prevents another attack. Peel him like a potato if you have to. Like it or not, we live in a Darwinian world. Maybe that's what terroristic violence is in some way: natural selection acting to remove a maladaptive trait such as hugging the person who's going to kill you in any event. Self recrimination, heart-on-your-shoulder liberalist hand-wringing wouldn't have beaten Hitler in WWII, and it won't defeat terrorism today. You're not making archane mathematical computations in quantum physics: be soft, you die; be firm, you live. Not a lot of gray area there. Unless you think victory is thinking, "Wow, I'm sure a concientious victim..." as the plane hits the tower or the bomb goes off and the light in your head winks out. Well, you won't be cluttering up the gene pool anymore.

You don't know for a fact that if Bush hadn't won that we mau not even had the 9-11 attack.

What we do know is he did nothing to improve national security for the first 8 months in office.

      • Posted By: ASpadeIsASpade @ 01/14/2009 9:53:29 PM

To your first point: Hey, way to state an obvious point. The idea of my post is that we haven't faced one since.

To your second point: If you have access to all the security proceedings undertaken by Bush/Cheney in the first 8 months, please post them for all to see. And following your line of logic if Obama hasn't whipped the economy into shape in 8 months, then he's done nothing. Not a rational time frame to solve a problem so big.
