Is this supposed to be responsible journalism? Give somebody with BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome) a pen and watch them opine! My bet is that Bush won't be seen historically in the top ten percent but he is far from the worst US president. An open mind sees the concept of democracy in the Middle East as the best counter to Islamic Fundamentalism. Bravo to the interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan. That same open mind sees the role of congress in our current economic meltdown (particularly rep. Barney Frank). I blame Bush for being too much of a pushover for the Democrats in congress. He has not been a fiscal conservative. We needed one.

The editor of the above article sums it up: Was it innocence, incompetence, or being easily manipulated that drove his "missteps"? Nomatter how you answer that question, he was never presidential material.

Wow...I wonder how a liberal like Weisberg would look at the worst Presidency of the 20th century....Jimmy Carter. I am sure he would spin it that Carter wasn't innocent and incompetent. It will be funny when all the Bush bashing stops...most everyone with Newsweek won't have anything to write about.

The time of jingoism is over. President George W Bush epitomised the divisions that this nation has sought to fix. He put the whole nation into a quasi-dark age, and now that we have had a taste of that, the entire U.S. should swear an oath never to return to those times again.

  • Posted By: ThinkTruth @ 01/15/2009 1:46:31 PM

    Let us never forget 9/11.

And let us NEVER forget that Bush was the president that should have never been.

The majority of the citizens in the United States of America voted for a different person to govern the country.

All the more reason to ditch the Electoral College. This ain't 1789.

The fact that everything was so secretive, speaks volumes, on the Bush administration. Granted, the world is rid of Saddam, and his sons. But, look what we've done to the region. The Bush administration ignored the economy, until it was too late. Now, look at the mess we have. I believe, that George W. Bush was looking for a reason to invade Iraq, the moment he was sworn in. Bush family ties to the Saudi's, I believe, had some role in decisions made. My rank of George W. Bush: out of 43, I rank him #49.

i agree with all you say except i rank him 110 if America survives that long after what Bush did to us

How was initiating the war on terror a "presidential misjudgment and mismanagement"?

    • Posted By: dianlarkin @ 01/15/2009 1:49:56 PM

it's the old witch hunt game -- except today republicans and fundamentalists use the more subtle term 'terrorist' just be very careful how and who crafts the definition of 'terrorist' as Bush defined it, it is anyone who disagreed with Bush (see Patriot Act)

This is not news. This is Newsweek trying to stoke business by providing opinions with little to no facts. Maybe they are hoping Starbucks and other coffee shops will start subscibing so they can have a copy of Newsweek's crap in every coffee shop in America...

You want the government to intervene more in business? How about the US Gov't forces Newsweek to take "News" out of their name - based on the fact they don't provide "News" on a weekly basis.

Considering the political makeup of Congress, I am quite pleased with the terms of George W Bush, particularly the second. Our economic problems are the product of Congressional and Presidential policies going back to the 1960's. I have long ago come to the conclusion that America is better off when the 535 folks in Washington get little or nothing done. Bush casuse a stoppage in rediculous legislation proposed by the democrats and I could ask no more. I think we will all see the chaos which will ensue with the current 2 year makeup of Congress starting this month.

George Bush "played" foolish to trick the wise. The media has manipulated society into thinking that "he was an idiot." However, this so-called "idiot" was able to strategize -and with the coerce the nation into giving up more civil liberties, and enduring more extortion and corruptive acts, which hasn't been seen since North America was colonized.

Torture, lies, extortion, rape, plunder, more lies..., yet in the end "we" worry about his legacy. Do you think that he's worried about what the nation thinks? Weren't YOU the one losing your home; doesn't he have somewhere to live? Weren't YOU the one losing your job; doesn't he have a job? Didn't YOU have to choose between food and medicine; do you think he has that dilemma? Isn't it YOUR child dying in Iraq; won't he see his grand children? Isn't YOUR freedom and security at risk; doesn't he have lifetime secret-service protection?

What are the terms again: [you've been] "hoodwinked;" "bamboozled," "run-a-muck," "led astray." Look at the facts and you'll see who really was "stupid" and "incompetent."

This Iraq war is all about oil and is largely for the benefit of the Saudi royal family. End of story.

At this moment of transition, we need to be thoughtful, not a bunch of smart alecks. I am an Obama fan and hopeful for this new historic period in our American lives. However, President Bush stood up to a very tough moment in unprecidented times with a terrorist strike on American soil of unprecidented magnitude. He gave us reason to be brave and I shall not forget those very critical moments. Sometimes sucess is "quiet," and we need to remember that it isn't what happens but what doesn't happen at times. There were no further attacks were there? On another front, President Bush did not create the financial disaster that we confront now, this has been going on across administrations, though certainly a blind eye to regulation in favor of business was a trademark. However, President Bush is not responsible for the fact that we simply have not had sound federal governnance in terms of long term fiscal policy for 30 years (since we started balancing fiscal policy against with mandatory trust fund balances, that is a shame but not of President Bush's making.) And Iraq, yes, it seems President Bush could not get the brutality exacted on the gental Kuwaities out of his mind, knew in his heart that Iraq was fundamentally dangerous--but was the best answer war? Manufacturing reasons to go to war on a sovereign nation, no matter the horrible behavior? Well, look at Hitler's Germany, maybe that's how President Bush saw Hussein. I wish him the best. Sometimes when I am just not sure....I take a look at "who married the guy...." (no disrespect intended.) Laura Bush is a very special, elegant and classy woman. President Bush grew into the Presidency and was Presidential when we needed him to be. So, let's remember all of the good things too. May God Bless President and Mrs. Bush as they transition to their new lives after the Presidency. Thank you for your service to our wonderful country. If anyone can fix it, we can. We must have the will and discipline to do so.

This writer is a classic example of those that consist of the biased liberal media. Anyone sitting at home watching CNN could have writen this. It seems like he hasn't even done reasearch on the matter. Just another liberal spewing the "I hate Bush" mantra. Spare us your biased opinions Jacob, we've heard it all before.

THANK YOU MR PRESIDENT AND OUR GREAT AND WONDERFUL BRAVE SOLDIERS. Comments
In the years since terrorists attacked us , President Bush has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Libya, Iran, and, North Korea without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people. Thankfully after 9/11 President Bush and our Great Soldiers have prevented another attack on American soil by taking the war back to SADDAM,THE GODFATHER OF ISLAMIC STATE-SPONSORED TERRORISM.

Those of us that love American and the freedom that we have can never thank you enough!!!!! More truth at: http://www.commandments.us No matter how many peaceful Muslims there may be, they are no protection from the Terrorist Muslim leaders and what they are fanatically bent on doing -- by their own pronouncements -- killing all of us "infidels." I don't blame the peaceful Muslims. What would you do if the choice was shut up or die? So who are we at war with? There is no way we can honestly respond that it is anyone other than the Muslim terrorists.

Trying to be politically correct and avoid verbalizing this conclusion can well be fatal. There is no way to win if you don't clearly recognize and articulate who you are fighting. We can definitely lose this war, and as anomalous as it may sound, the major reason we can lose is that so many of us simply do not fathom the answer to the second question: What does losing mean? It would appear that a great many of us think that losing the war means hanging our heads, bringing the troops home and going on about our business, like post Vietnam. This is as far from the truth as one can get. What losing really means is: We would no longer be the premier country in the world. The attacks will not subside, but rather will steadily increase. Remember, they want us dead, not just quiet. If they had just wanted us quiet, they would not have produced an increasing series of attacks against us over the past 18 years. The plan is clearly for terrorists to attack us, until we are neutered and submissive to them, If we lose the war, our production, income, exports and way of life will all vanish as we know it. The Muslims fully know what is riding on this war, and therefore are completely committed to winning, at any cost. We'd better know it too!!

What standard shall be used to judge President Bush? Incompetent,? Unfit to be President of this country? He should be tried for premeditated murder of 4000 plus American Sondiers in Iraq. I am really surprised of the comments some of the comments made supporting President Bush. There is no President in our history who is so anti-American.

  • Posted By: Be the difference @ 01/15/2009 1:47:20 PM

    Newsweek polls???

Like that's a fair poll. It will take only one strike against om American soil before everyone realizes just how much he did. I pray and hope it never happens again, but Bush did everything within his power to make sure it never happened again on his watch and guess what, IT DIDN'T...

But will any left wing liberal news outlet like Newsweek or any of them wacko liberals in this country ever recognixe that. No, there self motivated elistist attitude that are filled with hate will never allow them to.

From the tone of the article, I get the idea that journalists think they have some right to see into the decision making process of a sitting President. Nothing could be further from the truth. We elect representatives to make the day to day decisions about our Republic for us and get to evaluate theri performance every four years. To think they should be accountable to the vagaries of the press every day for every decision erodes the Constitution and the Republic. John Adams signed the Alien and Sedition Act becouse of this type of attitude. Overkill, yes, it should have only applied to the Fourth Estate. President Bush is probably the most courageous President we have had since Teddy Roosevelt. He did what was right without regard to the opinions of the press or the political elite. He preserved the safety of the United States and used the power of our country to kill those who would do harm to us. That is what the Constitution says his job is. He didn't consider the "Constitutional Rights" of foreigners because they don't have any. He could have done a better job of explianing himself to America, but it's not part of the job; the man had more important things to work on. Reporterand pundits saw to it that he was punished for not taking their unlearned, uninformed, and unfounded input into consideration. Such is the nature of politics. I am thankful for President Bush's clear and unambigous message to the world: there are American's; those who wish us well; and those who would do us harm. The latter are targets.

Wow, so black and white... I wish the world was like that, maybe Bush wouldn't be such a failure, becuase that is how Cheney managed him for 6 of the 8 years.

Bush was the biggest failure to set foot in the whitehouse and should not even be placed in the history books as an official president of this great country.

He was not couragious, he was a poser and incompetent and did not have the capacity to stand up to Cheney and the other rats that led us down the road of lies and exploitation of terror against Americans to munipulate the will of the people.

Fortunately for many of us we were not only Buff in our bodies , but we used our heads as welll. Not so much for some though. They were Bush supporters who really do not have the capacity to see outside of black and white issues and propaganda. They are what is wrong with this country and no longer can support a little yippe kay ya puppet. In the end they were all puppets of a failed presidency and an embarassment of this great country.

      • Posted By: Shanshayla @ 01/12/2009 7:59:31 PM

This mindset of yours that "Cheney managed Bush" is so far off the wall it's laughable.

        • Posted By: whatisreal? @ 01/15/2009 1:47:20 PM

Unfortunately, this country is not laughing... Cheney ran the palce for at least 5 of the 8 years, until GWB gained enough confidence and capacity. By then it was kind of late...

So laugh it up, we aren't laughing with you, we are sad for you...

Its pretty obvious the media has more contempt for Bush than any group of people. They are the ones who helped to ruin this once great country. NO one had a word to say when he was declaring his plan after 9/11. Everyone was one the band wagon. It wasn't until later when we actually started carrying out the plan did everyone get cold feet. What? you mean we can't just snap our fingers and it will all be better? You mean we actually have to send troops to another country? Well maybe we should talk about this, 9/11 who? I thank the media and congress for destroying us. Way to stand behind your President. What a back stabbing bunch you all have turned out to be. Now look at what a laughing stock we are. We actually have a Muslim president claiming to be christian who is half black if you consider his father to be black and from Africa. Too bad he chose to wrong church to claim as his christian proof. They kinda gave it away with their anti american/anti white hate speaches. Ooops. Yet he is still elected. What a riot.
