I believe George Bush knew he was going to invade Iraq January 21, 2001. We would have gone to war in Iraq regardless of the events of September 11, 2001. That attack only confirmed in his mind that he needed to invade.

Cheney put himself in power and used the puppet to do his bidding. Yes, it was planned well in advance...

Bush is accountable for his actions, period. And he should be held accountable.

What an obnoxious, assuming column. There is nothing substantive stated here, only vile, extremely liberal rhetoric that puts another nail in the coffin containing Newsweek's journalistic integrity. Weisberg: The next time you want to disrespect the office of the President of the United States of America, don't make broad, sweeping statements. Rather, provide real information, actual figures and facts, and watch your tone.

"Once the country is rid of Bush"? Seriously? That language is the language of partisanship and evokes only feeling, not movement toward a solution to the myriad problems we face. What's more, the fact that you attribute the current financial crisis to President Bush's administration trumpets your ignorance. You're the editor-in-chief of Slate? You deserve to be demoted for your startling lack of knowledge regarding economics and legislation.

The Congress is to blame for the economic crisis, not the executive branch. Folks on both sides of the aisle contributed, but President Bush, as with most presidents, had little to nothing to do with the economy. Seriously now. Please try harder to conceal your foolishness instead of proving its existence to the world.

Nioce to hear Newsweek tell it how it is.

  • Posted By: whatisreal? @ 01/12/2009 4:41:43 PM

By Bush, you suck, you embarassed your father and your name, and this great country. You proved how well one can underachive and lie and cover it up and redefine words like Patriot and Hero into something that is a joke. You divided this country and left a bunch of morons who do not know what American values are, and have no clue what a patriot or a hero is. Your supporters minds are programmed to hear the little Rovian flute. Please play it and walk you and your followers to Texas so we can push it into the gulf...

Bush supporters are what is wrong with this great country. They embarass us by placing incompetence on a pedestal.

Anbody reading this from another country, please know that these bush apologists are a marginalized bunch that will never have power to *** over this gerat country for generations....

The last paragraph of this article is highly obnoxious ! :
"Once the country is rid of Bush, perhaps we can start developing a more nuanced understanding of how his presidency went astray. His was no ordinary failure, and he leaves not just an unholy mess but also some genuine mysteries."

At the minimum those conclusions are highly UNpatriotic and extremely disrespectful of the Office of the Presidency and especially our still current President. Though much of recent history didn't go as we all wished it had, too much is being very wrongly blamed on George W. Bush personally. GW had to deal with probably the worst set of circumstances that have occurred during our entire almost 250 year history and I think GW and his administration responded admirably against strong odds and a highly disagreeable and combative Congress and Liberal Press.

Of course GW is NOT responsible for the Katrina aftermath; no such disaster has ever happened before and much of that responsibility and blame lies directly in Louisiana and in New Orleans in particular.

The financial mess has been proved to belong to Congressional Democrats who very early on in this new century blocked attempts to regulate and stop the root cause of our financial disaster. It is NOT the President who can initiate the regulation that was needed. Only Congress can create law and the powerful Democrats prevented responsible regulation.

I really feel that George W. Bush, and many in his administration, deserve huge admiration if not adoration.

Don't apologize for that incompetent poser, just please leave this country, we need to rid this country of embarassments and people that make excuses for the lame and corrupt.

You don't even know what a hero or PAtriot is... How about some freedom fries you moron?

Another Bush bashing. How disrespectful and sad. He has kept us safe, and I for one am sorry to see him leave. I slept better at night knowing he was in charge. Now I worry. Hopefully we won't have another attack.

    • Posted By: whatisreal? @ 01/12/2009 4:30:46 PM

We had an attack while your little puppet was in power remember??? Oh I guess you don't... What a bunch of out of touch fools... That is why the GOP and the evangelicals are in the wilderness looking for somebody to hand them their a$$...

    • Posted By: whatisreal? @ 01/12/2009 4:29:28 PM

Glad you support that embarassment. Now please go to a country that hates America, because you must...

The running theme during the Bush Presidency that doomed all of his major policies to be failures in either fact or in perception was the rigid manner that he chose to frame them. Early on in his Presidency he defined in no uncertain term his Axis of Evil. After declaring "Mission Accomplished" in Iraq he then allowed the definition of "Victory" to be determined by events on the ground. Domestically, he looked the people of New Orleans directly in the eye and pledged to rebuild it better than it was before Katrina. In each case his bold statements were made in a backdrop where there were no decisive solutions to extremely complex circumstances. We were not equipt to confront the AXIS similtaneously on three fronts so it was counterproductive to call them out and connect them in such a manner. As far as allowing "conditions on the ground" anywhere to define anything, unless one is in total control of those conditions it would be a foolhearty statement that leaves our ultimate achievement of "Victory" undefineable. In the aftermath of Katrina, the people of the region needed real hope supported by resources and competent mechanisms to relocate or rebuild depending on the projected long range stability of the areas in question, not false hope and false promises that 3 years later have not been fulfilled. The Bold Bush Bluster in the face of reason and facts will be his enduring legacy,

    • Posted By: TravelinMike @ 01/12/2009 1:34:13 PM

The worst blunder may have been to declare a "War on Terror". When by his own assessment the terrorism problem will be a generational phenomenum, describing it as "War' subjects it to the expections of clear victory or defeat. And in the minds of most, anything less than a clear, decisive Victory for the World's dominant Superpower is perceived as a defeat. Even the "perception" of defeat is a valuable tool for our enemies...our veil of invincibilty has been shredded by this President's reckless assertions.

      • Posted By: libertyfirst @ 01/12/2009 1:54:11 PM

I agree that his bluster and word choice did corner him (and us) into too many a "no-win" situation. It also provided terrific cover for the Washington machine to continue on as always; providing much fodder for late night television and "journalists" alike. More unfortunate, however, is that the disdain for Bush grew so quickly and to such a level, that no matter what he proposed stood a chance in courtroom of public bashing. Case in point, the liberal spending that Bush proposed and got through a Democrat-controlled Congress...from the prescription drug plan to all the bailouts...traditionally progressive liberal agendas successfully pushed through yet villainzed by the very populace it helped because it was he, GW who did it.

        • Posted By: TravelinMike @ 01/12/2009 4:23:21 PM

The perscription drug plan was perhaps the singular example of the "Compassionate Conservatism" that never crossed the state line of Texas enroute to Washington. As for the attempts at Government sponsored bailouts, that was simply a wild, desperate attempt to stave off the absolute collapse of the US (and world) financial markets until he is back where he belongs...wranging tumbleweed in Crawford.

Bush is the biggest disgrace in the history of the United States and the office of the Presidency. History will reflect this. Those of you who are still defending him need to go Iraq.

  • Posted By: abadreview @ 01/12/2009 4:02:48 PM

To those of you who constantly defend Bush's "war on terror", citing the fact that there hasn't been another 9/11, you need to wake the heck up!!! First, there should have never been a 9/11. It should have never taken place, PERIOD. We are the United States, we have some of the smartest minds in the world, we should have seen that coming (especially after the WTC bombing of '93). That said, 9/11, the worst attack on U.S. soil in our history, happened on George W. Bush's watch. PERIOD. As for the naive assertion that this "war on terror" has been a success....are you high on PCP?!? Bush condoned torture, which has to be one of the most un-American things any U.S. President has ever done, not to mention every single C.I.A. Intelligence estimate in the past 7 years has said that Al-Qaeda is only growing stronger, not weaker. Oh, and don't forget our terrible failure under Bush in Afghanistan, the Taliban is in control of half of the country again...SMOOTH MOVE!!! I could go on and on and on and on....the bottom line is: BUSH AND HIS ADMINISTRATION IS A FAILURE AND HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST DISGRACE IN THE HISTORY OF THE PRESIDENCY! History will not be conflicted in this.

btw.. I cancelled my newsweek subscription after seeing the bias in the Democratic primaries. I would have guessed that maybe Obama vs. a republican may have gotten some leeway with Newsweek, but I was baffled by the attack on Hillary.

I take issue with many parts of your column. Bush made mistakes, but to say that he did not try to run as a centrist is utter garbage. It was the media and the democratic party that tore down every overture the man tried. He came in and attempted to work as a moderate but dems were still fuming over the election and made it known. Bush was not only a good president, but a great president who kept us safe for the last 7 years.

Your article is terrible biased and I for one do not agree with most of your left wing point of view. I am 7th generation American and Mr. Bush stood up for and fought for my old American ideals. Unlike you and the rest of the unsimulated imagrent population who think America is just a place to get a hand out without having to pay for the freedoms. The next time the the invaders come and they will come, I hope they hit your home town first, at least you will not be here to see what you have created with this give away mentality.

    • Posted By: whatisreal? @ 01/12/2009 2:55:48 PM

You are from the 7th century... Please go back and take the rest of the idiots embarassing this country with you... Maybe you can start your own country where people don't use thier heads and live by erdefining and diluting worksd like patriotism and hero.

    • Posted By: whatisreal? @ 01/12/2009 12:50:19 PM

Bush plain and sinple was in over his head and the fact that you still support him erally underscores how low the bar is. American ideals were not served by Bush at all, actually undermined and corrupted. But you know, that is why the GOP is in teh wilderness, they drank the poison too, and sold us all down the river under the guise of old fashion America, while pissssing down our backs and fukkking just about everything up....

Actually his grades are public record and he graduated with higher GPA than John Kerry. Of course, you don't care about that because you are a partisan hypocrite.

Bush's mistakes are beyond blunders. They are border-line crimes. His actions were driven by irrational power and greed. A smart man might have been able to pull off what Bush did and still maintain a favorable rating but Bush, his cabinet and staff were not even smart/experienced enough to be deceptive. They committed blatant mistakes, time after time, bringing our country to ruin and disrepute. And they are responsible for thousand of innocent people dying and tens of thousands of others losing their jobs, their homes, and their savings. Why aren't there safeguards in government policy and procedure that would have allowed the "American People" to remove Bush once his incompetency was clearly revealed? We can move to impeach a president for having extra-marital affairs but we cannot move to impeach a president who is grossly abusing his power and authority. Joanne Taylor, Boise
