What is popular is not always right and what is right is not always popular. This seems to sum up this president. The fact that he has kept us safe in our homeland since 9/11 is of tremendous signifigance and yet no one acknowledges this. Unfortunately his loyalty to those around him cost him dearly. To those of you who think the economy trumps our security...please remember without our security there is now economy.

No one acknowledes it becuase there is no evidenc to support that claim. Betweeen the first WTC center attack and the second there was almost a decade, Bush was still trying to buy himself into a job back then. He was not "protecting us then. In fact, as I stated and has been reported, Bush only created more terrorist recruitment around the world... Get a clue... It is not so black and white... The guy attacked the wrong country for Christs sake? I am suprised he didn't *** up and bomb this country... That is how safe i felt with that moron Cheny running the show...

A roadside bomb can happen at any time. It is not about Bush keeping us safe. GWB was not keeping us safe between the first WTC center attack and it was many years between attacks on ameican soil. Your logic falls on it's face.

Cheney was the president for 6 years. They were criminal, neglegent, adn incompetent. They ran this country into the ground, corrupted our values and embarassed us. They will never be forgiven, and the GOP will remain inthe wilderness until they rid themselves of the stain of Bush and learn what it means to be a patriot, and value your country of ideals of a few misguided individuals in power.

      later....

We are not safe... You don't know too much about the history of the WTC attacks do you? Do you remember the first attack??? Probably not, or you wouldn't be so blindly spouting thsi Bush kept us safe crap. Bush made the terrorism problem much worse for the future, now we are left to clean up his historic fukkking mess... Jesus Christ

His administration has been classic Machievellian--ruling from the position of fear, and fear based politics. With regards to whether we can judge a president's tenure in office, well that is not only a right, it is the duty and responsibility of citizens in an open and free Democracy. Who is allowed to judge past, or sitting, presidents? Only "qualified" historians and experts? When are they supposed to be judged? Ten years from now? It is called 'The Lanscape of History'--when one looks at the foreground the background is blurred, and vice versa. While one tries to examine a presidency it will always become more clear with time, but this does not preclude my right to pass judgment on a public servant. In this passing of time the picture becomes clearer and a person has the right to say 'I was wrong' about that judgment, however, passing judgment on a man in a publicly elected position is our right, responsibility, and duty.

The biggest concern I have these days is how people are so simple-minded toward the actions and words of our "leaders". Again it is not just our right it is our responsibility to question everything that they say and do. Failure to do this is a very slippery slope leading to the will of the governed becoming super-imposed with the will of the governing. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and it is our job as citizens of a Democracy to make sure this doesn't happen. Defering to the consent of 'leadership' and absolving oneself of responsibility leads us down the primrose path of politics whereby one day you suddenly don't have the right to question, because fascism occurs when people give up the right to govern themselves. And the simple-mindedness in this country is that these things could never happen here. You're right, we don't know what happens behind closed doors; therefore, I question all motives of any politician.

How about torture. Some say it is okay especially if it provides necessary intelligence. Using history as a model I can recall how much we enjoyed hearing of the torture of American soldiers in Vietnam. Yet somehow in our convoluted sense of history and responsibility we have either forgotten (by omission) or deem that to be different; therefore, this administration has managed to get many people to see their view of the world where 2+2=5.

    Bush's grade as a president--F.

Absolutely abyssmal as far as leadership is concerned, although the buddies and former business partners of the administration have made a fortune. "Let them eat cake", should be his mantra. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, et. al. are criminals masquerading as politicians. I pass my judgment on them here and now as being absolute skunks of the first order and as some of the most sordid, repulsive, and revolting forms of human existence walking the earth.

BTW, I am not an Obama fan.

I just love this article..so full of spin and bias...

How nice that in the wake of the worst president leading the worst administration EVER..you're going to give us the cute option..

    Was he stupid..OR..was he manipulated..

How about he knew/knows exactly what he was doing and he's a douche-bag.

The media..ignored the whole fake Texas accent (He's from the North Eastern United states actually)
Ignored the fact that he's not stupid..even if he is an idiot, he did graduate from an Ivy league school you know.
He probably went into office with a lot more understanding of what the President's life is like and what a commander in chief has to do than anyone else has..His father was president just 8 years before him..

George W. Bush is not going to get a free pass from me or anyone else who can think and read on the grounds that he's stupid or manipulated..I'll save those names for those who voted for the guy.

Look at all of you trying to defend him. Take a second, a step back, and look at where this country is NOW and where it was 8 years ago when he took over. There is no defending him. STOP! Don't even try, you look foolish and everyone will laugh at you. It is'nt the "cool thing" to hate bush, its just the normal thing becasue he is so terrible. You republicans will follow your candidates no matter what. Sounds alot like how Hitler was able to run his operation, with sheep like you who support him only becasue he is a republican. Our country is in bad shape right now and he is to thank for it!

LIberalism is a disease and a drain on society and the world. It is the 2nd biggest threat to a free world next to terrorism. Free the people of the tyranny that is coming. God help us all.

      • Posted By: ThinkTruth @ 01/15/2009 2:29:39 PM

I'm not a "liberal". In fact, I don't label myself. I agree strongly with some conservative views. However, the day the election was stolen from the people, I turned to my friends and said, "We are in deep doo doo. Seriously." Many in the country today are very upset and depressed about the election results. At least you can be sure that it was a valid election. Now you understand the utter devastation that many of your fellow Americans felt in 2000 and especially 2004, when the election was compromised and their vote did not count.

Getting someone to change their political viewpoint is like getting them to change religions???doesn???t happen. Once those neurons make that emotional connection with someone, come hell or high water (and we???ve seen both in the last eight years) there is no changing of the mind.

People, seek the truth, putting emotions aside. You will understand how devastatingly tragic the last 8 years have been to everything we cherish???we???ve gone from freedom to Patriot Act, from a middle class lifestyle to homeless, and from relative security to being internationally vilified not only for our foreign policies but also because our tanking economy has negatively impacted economies around the world.

I agree that Bush will go down as one of the worst Presidents in history. He made the worst decision by entering the war in Iraq. We as a nation have paid for this in American lives. No matter what you say this was an avoidable war with an unknown Bush agenda behind it. We as a nation may never know really why we are at war.

  • Posted By: evansguy @ 01/15/2009 2:25:07 PM

THANK YOU MR PRESIDENT AND OUR GREAT AND WONDERFUL BRAVE SOLDIERS. Comments
In the years since terrorists attacked us , President Bush has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Libya, Iran, and, North Korea without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people. Thankfully after 9/11 President Bush and our Great Soldiers have prevented another attack on American soil by taking the war back to SADDAM,THE GODFATHER OF ISLAMIC STATE-SPONSORED TERRORISM.

Those of us that love American and the freedom that we have can never thank you enough!!!!! More truth at: http://www.commandments.us No matter how many peaceful Muslims there may be, they are no protection from the Terrorist Muslim leaders and what they are fanatically bent on doing -- by their own pronouncements -- killing all of us "infidels." I don't blame the peaceful Muslims. What would you do if the choice was shut up or die? So who are we at war with? There is no way we can honestly respond that it is anyone other than the Muslim terrorists.

Trying to be politically correct and avoid verbalizing this conclusion can well be fatal. There is no way to win if you don't clearly recognize and articulate who you are fighting. We can definitely lose this war, and as anomalous as it may sound, the major reason we can lose is that so many of us simply do not fathom the answer to the second question: What does losing mean? It would appear that a great many of us think that losing the war means hanging our heads, bringing the troops home and going on about our business, like post Vietnam. This is as far from the truth as one can get. What losing really means is: We would no longer be the premier country in the world. The attacks will not subside, but rather will steadily increase. Remember, they want us dead, not just quiet. If they had just wanted us quiet, they would not have produced an increasing series of attacks against us over the past 18 years. The plan is clearly for terrorists to attack us, until we are neutered and submissive to them, If we lose the war, our production, income, exports and way of life will all vanish as we know it. The Muslims fully know what is riding on this war, and therefore are completely committed to winning, at any cost. We'd better know it too!!

Bush will be ranked right beside Hitler.

He has attacked Iraq to capture their oil, caused the death of more than 1,000,000 Iraqi's and more than 5,000 U.S. Troops. He has used the office of the president for his own monitary gain and screwed-us over just like our own financial industry has. And as time passes even more illegal activities by the Bush administration will surface. He WILL be noted as the worst U.S. President ever.

Hey dumbs did you every serve your country or just waited for your free hand outs. I lost soldiers in that war and we did not go for oil. We free country from jackass like you. If we had killed over 1 million people than IRAQ would be empty. Get your fact straight before you open your mouth and did not belive everything that the NEWS reports.

      • Posted By: whatisreal? @ 01/15/2009 2:24:53 PM

We went into Iraq in the first gulf war to protect oil interests. The second time in Iraq had very little to do with protecting Amaricans. i would understand why a soldier would have to think they were protecting Americand, otherwise how could you possibly fight for no cause. The leaders of our country had different ideas though, and the soldiers did what they we asked to do.

Bush was the worst president in the history of presidents. There is only one thing worse than a blatent incpmpetant & that is an arrogant blaent incompetant. Your article failed to mention the following: 1) He surrounded hiumself with arrogant blatents incompetants (Cheny, Bumsfeld & Brown (FEMA). Then he stood by them as they sank their ships. 2) A group of high schoolers could have managed Katrina better 3) He oversaw the largest transfrer of wealth from one group to another in the hsitory of the earth. He allowed the corporate thieves to run rampant. They robbed us all & then hid behind his coat tails. The big boys (from Enron to Big OIL) raped & pillaged us all & totally trashed the economy while Bush stood by & watched. 4) He destroyed our image in the world. In summary, it is shocking that one single human being could do so much damage in eight years. I hope the second most dangerous human being on the planet (Bush) doesn't let the door smack him in the ass on his way out of our lives. The single thing I ask of Bush is to be sure to take the single most dangerous human on the planet (Cheney) with him when he leaves. GOOD RIDDANCE TO BAD RUBBISH!

  • Posted By: Genteel @ 01/15/2009 2:23:45 PM

Saddam had to go and there were no ifs, when and what on that subject and Bush the moderate Texan who became polarized in Washington because of Cheney, and his father may have made that decision. He did hear and brought people from Texas, but he did not bring the good moral character executives, he brought with him greedy politicians and attorneys, so the mess. Cheney the person who was to find a VP candidate installed himself in that position.
Saddam, if was not pressured or was not removed could have easily bought a bomb from Pakistan, could have established back labs and produce chemicals that he used against Iran and his own people through chemical Ali. He possibly destroyed some WMD???s or they still could be buried some place. So decision of Saddam has to go was not wrong.

What went wrong is not studying Muslim culture and let other Muslim take over in orderly manner when Saddam was defeated. In this case, say if he had prepared Saddam's sons to rule or Saudi Arabia's king's or Iran's Ayatollah???s or Egypt's prince relatives or Turkish's repressed Muslim etc. in Iraq to rule (other Muslim), things would not have taken trillion dollar or 4000 American lives, but in such case how Cheney's cronies and Karl Rove's favorites would have made Billions? Did you know how much Black Water and Halliburton and their subsidiaries and companies made and how their executives took advantage of loop holes and uncontested contracts. Also how much Carlyle and Baines equity groups have profited and made money under Bush Administration by providing equity and bank rolling the corrupts involved in War Crimes by being contractors? At minimum 4 Trillion dollar has gone out of American economy and more then half of it has left country through these cronies and needs to be studied. Bush as an individual was brought up good by nice mother and father but was ruled and manipulated in Washington DC and these corrupt people in his administration made it a point to hurt people like me who helped in Texas. All the good advise and open communication that was sent good to President Bush or First Lady was screened by these crooks appointees and such advise did not reach him, his open doors were only for Cheney???s cronies, even Condi Rice had to go through line for a while before she could have direct contact. These people threw Collin Powell out and We fight war with what we have not what we need kept any financial boom within country as no investment made or purchases done from manufacturing community of the country. Even largest contracts were given to all out of country companies to keep British and other countries to support the country. Bush was kept from being told that Muslim and Pashto customs, religion and life styles need to be studied and decisions need to be based on that, but because they wanted to rule and profit from it, they did not do this to this date and kept such information from George W Bush as well as George H. W. Bush and his whole family and gr

Attempts to blame others for Bushs utter destruction of the US economy and the invasion of Iraq are ludicrous. GW Bush has accomplished exactly what he wanted to accomplish. Bush was just surrounded by like minded individuals.
The propaganda machine stated promoting the invasion of Iraq just after the initial military action in Afghanistan, and it was more than obvious no amount of common sense, or the truth was going to deter Bush from invading.
As for the economy the current crisis is only different from the economic crisis created by the Reagan Bush Administration that ended 16 years ago which included unemployment even higher than now and a bailout that included 68 billion to Neil Bush GW's brother only in the weakening of the economy by the outsourcing of jobs and elimination of industry... A weakening that will make recovery much more difficult for American main street this time.
The fact is Bush accomplished exactly what he wanted to accomplish and consoles America with the words "America will recover" yes it will but it will be in spite of Bush not as the result of anything either Bush did.
The article is correct in the assumption we will never actually know or prove what went on behind closed doors GW Bush is not that dumb.

What a joke. People keep mentioning that the economic crisis started before Bushe's term. Although this may be true, Bush had 8 years to take make take the necessary steps to help quell the effects. The financial crisis along with the intelligence prior to 9/11 are two major things that were ignored. Bush let everyone around him work as they please, he was clueless as to what everyone was doing. That fact is, Bush was just a puppet surrounded by morons that made decisions for him. The man has no opinions of his own. Everytime he speaks it seems so mechanical and rehearsed, up until the most recent speech which he finally did seem somewhat human.

Sonny Down Town...nice rhetoric. Your bass-ackwards thinking is actually quite funny....and way off-base. He never lied to us about invading Iraq. If I recall correctly, he went after Osama. He didn't drive our economy into the ground. That award would go to Bill Clinton. Least we not forget the Congress has been under Democratic rule since 2004 and has since had a worst favorable opinion than the President. They have become the most inept Congress in history. The Katrina fiasco was the fault of their state government and Mayor Nagal, not the federal government. And what makes you think there will actually be peace in the Middle East? Israel and the surrounding Islamic countries will wage war with each other, regardless of any peace treaty that is signed. They have been for as long as I can remember. Read the history books, you might get educated on this subject.
The first election was one by him fair and square. Let's not forget Gore lost his OWN state. In fact, if he would have one Tennessee, the hanging chad debate wouldn't even be one. The second term was one by Bush not because of some legislation in the South, but because Kerry lied about his record. Global warming? Are you kidding me? As much as there is out there on global warming, there's as much evidence that proves it doesn't exist.
If you would have not talked so much out of your ass and more out of your mouth, you might have made a point. But by belittling, you did nothing but make yourself out to be an idiot.

In future history books, Bush will be labelled as the worst president ever. He will be the historical example of what happends when a religious nut-case runs our country. His representation of Republican ideals combined with his far-right religious beliefs will lead to sweeping changes in his own party if they ever hope to challenge Democrats again. Banning abortion and gay marriage, "trickle down" economics, military strength before diplomacy, budgets cuts nearly everywhere (except for the military and nuclear programs), dependance on non-renewable resources, destruction of the environment, abstinence only funding - these and many others are all conservative ideas that DO NOT work in a modern day society.

America has been and will continue to be passed by foreign countries in important fields such as education and quality of life. Countries with higher taxes and bigger budgets (except for military), legalized abortions and gay marriage, and less dependance on foreign oil. Until Americans get their heads out of the sand and realize that the old, conservative ways of doing things don't work anymore, American will continue to slide further and further out of the world status it used to enjoy (before Bush took over).

Well all i have to say is.. Bush has done a wonderful job of paying as much attention to his pocket book, his lobbyist etc. i think bush had partial reasons for going to war ( war on terror and perfect opportunity for him to pad the pockets of his behind close doors investments in oil refinering and service equipemnt.) That for some reason nobody wants to talk about. I belive the war gave him a reason to look like a hero as well as make a hell of a lot of money doing so. Lets not for get hurricane Katrina.. I would think that you would move with as much aggression to help people in your own country as you damn near jumped over the desk and put on armor yourself to go to war in Iraq. All I'm sayin is that one thing is clear about bush and his administration you can clearly look back and see what was most important to Bush and unfortunately the hard truth is, its was us everyday middle class working people that got overlooked during Bush terms in office. Now on the other hand the (already wealthy lobbyist) Will never complain. Why would they there is no reason for them too. Why is it so hard for Republicans to admit that Bush jacked up 90% of his term in office. That is clear as having 20/20. Now if you dont' see that you are one of those that is bias. Now i said all that to say ( I voted for Bush)!!!!! And on every issue I was looking for a reason to keep hope alive with the Bush administration and on every hand I was let down..Its sad that I have to say I'm glad hes out of office now ( The very man I help put in office) WOW!!!!!

I have to take issue with people saying "George Bush held off another major Terrorist attack on US soil for nearly eight years". If "W" had paid attention to the intelligence reports presented to his administration in the first place, we would have NOT suffered the 911 attacks on America to begin with. Bush will go down in history definately as the worst President to have ever served in that capacity. Some of those commenting on Obama, I must say to them, that I DO NOT care what color a man's skin is. What is important is that he performs his job and leads his life in a manner that is good for his country, his fellow man, and his family. George Bush was not and did not live up to any of these standards. I find this courious coming from a man that represents a party that is supposidly moral. THANK GOODNESS HE IS GONE!!

kindheart8 I would most sincerely hope that "anyone else" faced with 9/11 would try one of three things AT A MINIMUM differently than criminal Bush and his worse criminal cohort Cheney did: (1) NOT flying the Bin Laden family out of the country secretly the following day (2) NOT engaging the pure criminally mercinary firm of Haliburton to help either immeidately BEFORE or at any time AFTER 9/11 -- the former, particularly taken with the Bin Laden escape orchestrated by Bush, leading to speculation that Bush was actually in or or at least knew that 9/11 was going to occur and (3) try invading the right country -- Bin Laden was known to be in Afghanistan, everyone is stil waiting for an honest explanation of WHY we went into Iraq instead.

The worst thing Bush did -- and he perpetrated many evils against America and the world inlcuding war crimes and including US educational blunders that really harmed an aleady badly ailing American educational system, which blunders include permitting funding ONLY for abstinence only sex education (HELLO both Bristol Palin and Sarah Palin herself) and the ridiculously destructive "No Child Left Behind" -- but the worst things he did involve the erosions of our sacred Constitutional rights. The Patriot Act is a travesty and that is a small piece of the problem.

The secrecy and the quiet secret expansion of the executive powers and items like allowing the ownership of media outlets by government and government related entites and allowing conglomerates to own more media outlets than was previously allowed and than is priduent (if a FREE PRESS is really one of our FREEDOM values) is horrific.

The question is to me WHY DID THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ALLOW IT?

While Obama is a resounding shout of NO MORE (Thank God) it is not enough.

America wake up to protect your freedom -- before you wake up in chains. The possibly most single important thing we can do right now (besides elect Obama) is ensure no fundatmentalist chrsitians get anywhere near the White House in any capacity whatsoever. Fundamentalism is antithetical to freedom; whether it lives in a cave in Afghanistan and calls itself Islam or lives in America and calls itself Christian.

Dianlarkin..I could not have responded better myself. .I am so glad to see many more Americans think like this. It truly means that America has not died and forsaken all of her freedoms for the fear perpetuating mongers who try to coerce us into trading our civil liberties for a "so called safety". I do believe in good governance but not for the likes of some of the garbage that is in the Patriot Act. Hopefully Obama can rewrite some of the tragic laws that have been enacted.

I was amazed how Bush was even elected president, even at the 2nd round! People all over the world were wondering why John Kerry didn't become the president then with all the obviously bad decisions Bush had made in his 1st term. The people of Europe and Asia are really happy that finally Bush is not the president of US anymore. He was nothing but a sham! There was never a peaceful 8 years during his terms. The world's econoy collapse due to his incompetency. Likewise for the Bush admninistration. Somehow, a lot of manipulation that led from one bad decision to another. Job losses are happening all over the world due to the financial crisis, first began in US and spread like a domino rally to the rest of the world. I'm not trying to specify about any country being a superpower, I believe in global effect. And for once, I have finally get to experience the Americans choose their president wisely this time, and I really pray that they continue to do so in many US presidential terms to come. No president like Bush anymore, please! Bush and the rest of his administration should stand in trial with all the bad decisions they have manipulated the rest of the world to follow! .
