THINKER: THE TRUTH ITS AMAZING THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN IN POLITICS. POLITICIANS ONLY KNOW HOW TO LIE AND BRAINWASH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE JUST AS OTHER WORLD LEADERS DO TO THERE PEOPLE. LIES ARE COMMON, THE TRUTH DOES NOT EXIST.

There needs to be an investigation and accountability for the crimes committed by the bush administration and the cia agents that tortured people. To not prosecute the agents because they claim that they were just following policy would be similiar to not prosecuting the gestapö or other people who claim that they were just following orders. The y need to be held accountable. I am a victim of the war on terror through german - cia abuse of me by mistake due to identity theft.

If the investigation takes the form of fact finding and not scapegoating all is well. However, politics is too often about making soemone else look "bad" so the speaker looks "good" Interrogation largely doesn't work because fear and pain are the worst motivators for truth known to man. Building trust and trying to understand someone else's viewpont/perspective is more likely to reveal reality. Most people will say anything to avoid pain and discomfort...think Inquistion herel. Perhaps what CIA needs are a few pre-school teachers or special educators who know how to build trust and who constantly have to understand "the truth" with the merest of clues.

How come it's okay for Newsweek to use the word "spook", in an article about the Obama administration, but I can't?/

Absent accountability, there is no rule of law. We must prosecute those who violated our constitution and broke our laws, or abandon any pretension of being a legitimate, constitutionally-governed state. Any political inconvenience associated with the requisite prosecutions is irrelevant. Any hesitation to conduct such prosecutions constitutes disloyalty to our nation.

I agree, but I hope you are'nt talking about some poor GI doing what what he was told.

What we need is a dog that hunts game set match.

"Some anxious spies fear the new CIA chief could launch a witch hunt..."
This is a misuse of the term "witch hunt." There were no witches, but there were torturers at the CIA.

The C in CIA stands for Central. CIA was supposed to be the centralization of over-seas intelligence gathering and analysis. These days the U.S. seems to have as many intelligence agencies as it does Lieutenant Generals. Instead of being the President's obese, obsequious, lap dog, maybe Panetta can turn it into the premier organization for organizing, gathering and analyzing over-seas intelligence. Results? You want results? In a level-headed cost-benefit analysis, the CIA's results are worthless.

what about mind control on a 52 year old woman that knows thats why analog boxes are needed now and that if you have unknowingly got a veri chip in your brain, like me that my signature was forged for permission for research grants by censors to the nervous system attached to someone in a lab receiving signals by computer from my body and brain.

We are a nation of laws, not "men" (meaning both genders). If those leading our nation want anarchy, they can send a clear message that they're cool with that by not investigating and pursuing convictions here. It has been obvious to any American paying attention, that the Bush Administration and their government, justice and military people ignored and bulldozed any semblance of adherence to our laws, and to international laws.

The good news is that these people will be investigated and pursued by other countries whether we do it or not. The bad news is that the only way for the U.S. to avoid completely losing its standing in the world is to do the right thing - investigate and convict these theves and criminals, and put them up as examples to the rest of the world that they were not acting as Americans must. This is the only moral thing to do, and it's the only way to get our standing in the world back, if that's still possilble.

What a silly article. Who are you Mr.Hosenball and why don't you do your homework? When we all are dealing with the trials of the economy and our finances, here you are just not doing your job. We need real journalists. People who have concerns about the last seven years of the Bush administration, civil rights, habeus corpus and torture, are average people. I'm not a liberal activist, but just a citizen. I object to what's been going on and I like the idea that Mr. Panetta may become head of the CIA. He is reknown for honesty, hard work, and superior management skills. He's a smart man who will tell President-elect Obama like it is. We need good and smart and capable people in government, especially this part of government that has been stained by so much. What is wrong with that? I truely don't understand these flippant articles that are put out by lazy people.

Thank you, Lucy. I too am an average citizen -- an Independent who votes for the person I think best suited to the job -- and my first concern is an administration that will stop breaking the law.

While it would be nice to see those who did break the law be held responsible, that would be asking too much.

We have been safe from terrorist attack for over 7 years.

On January 20th Obama is totally responsible to sustain that record.

Obama's stands against torture are admirable but, in America, results count. And, results get you reelected.

I hope Obama is up to the tough decisions necessary to protect us.

    • Posted By: justpassingthru @ 01/11/2009 9:29:48 AM

Upon what fact(s) do you claim we have been "safe" from terrorism for 7 years?

We have not been attacked since 9/11. That can be due to any number of reasons, including the fact that if you want to attack a superpower, you plan carefully, take your time in setting it up, and remain patient. That's what they have done in each case and that's what they will continue doing. 7 years is nothing to these people. They are in it for the long haul.

Furthermore, Bush has done nothing to protect our infrastructure. Except invite in unlimited numbers of illegal aliens and imprison our border authorities for doing their job.

Thank God for the change! I always assumed it is best when interviewing a terriorist, who just killed my family, to offer him/her a cup of tea and my apology for being a free U.S. citizen. I hope you wil accept my apology.

    • Posted By: justpassingthru @ 01/11/2009 9:23:32 AM

And apparently you also would have thought it best to burn Galileo at the stake. You see, the first problem with torturing people is that some you torture may be innocent.

The more pragmatic problem (for people who otherwise have no ethics) is that when you're torturing someone, they will say anything they think you want to hear. Then you waste a lot of time and money running off in the wrong direction while getting blindsided by the real deal.

  • Posted By: justpassingthru @ 01/11/2009 9:15:06 AM

    "Risk-adversive." Waterboarding people. LOL

Yes, I just bet they are worried about it. Might I suggest 15 minutes in the pool for everyone who advocated it?

The Ministry of Truth (CIA) treats Directors that it doesn't like by "pharoah-ing" them: insulate, treat like royalty, feed them scripts to read to Congress, and otherwise do their own thing.

  • Posted By: thedon @ 01/11/2009 12:41:30 AM

Let's see how all of us are feeling about "torture" when terrorism again hits our shores. Yes, I know you're all miffed that Obama too is a pragmatist, and that he has left many of his utopian ideas on the campaign trail. It's a little different when the weight of the country now rests on your shoulders, isn't it? It's always the ones yapping about splashing some water in a terrorist's face who have no responsibility anyway. When we get bombed again it won't be the left's fault, will it? Oh, I am sure we'll be able to blame Bush for it anyway. Why stop AFTER he's not president anymore?

    Hmmm...

Leon Panetta has a very positive record as a former member of the U.S House of Representatives, Director of the United States Office of Management and Budget; and, as Chief of Staff to President Clinton.

By the way, he does have some previous, responsible, "intelligence community experience" while serving with the U.S. Army; and, the White House Chief of Staff is certainly part of the ???intelligence community.???

Most important, however, Leon Panetta was the main person responsible for balancing the budget during the Clinton years. Also, as Chief of Staff, he made day to day White House operations work more smoothly, through better management.

Leon Panetta???s reputation and credentials are flawless. Plus, he is a very good person!

He has an excellent record of cutting costs and doing an outstanding job at whatever the task.

Although he might be an ???outsider??? in the intelligence community, Leon Panetta does not carry past CIA baggage.

Therefore, he is an excellent choice to manage the activities of the CIA.

Um, Mr Steele, your liberal skirt is showing. Comparing Panetta to Wm Colby is flight of fancy. If you were in the field, you know that the last thing you want heading your agency is a politician/bureaucrat/CYA guy. People in the field WANT to take risk to get things done but the weenies on the Hill, at State or in the White House Politican Office don't want anybody pooping on the carpet. Of course, now at least the CIA doesn't have to worry about renegades leaking everything to the NYT or WaPo since those were all liberals like yourself you wanted to stick to just satelites and reading newspapers to find out about our enemies and wouldn't produce any information which couldn't be introduced before a grand jury.

Panetta will be ideal for Obama because he will act as a buffer between the nasty world outside and Obamas need to remain above it all. Like Sandy Berger did for Clinton by screening real-time intel through layers and layers of lawyers so that we never had to 'We could have stopped Bin Laden if only....'

Excuse me if I don't believe there are real spies who think another bureaucrat coming to the Agency is going to make life any better. It will be time to polish up those resumes and start hitting the contractor circuit.

I have been in the field and I can tell you right now what those people want. They want immunity from prosecution. They want insurance to cover possible lawsuits. They want legislative protections for their pensions. They know what they did was wrong and they just want the government to cover their butts. And I'm sorry, folks, a lot of them will wind up in jail. They knew it was wrong and didn't have the balls to quit.

To date, I have no reason to mistrust President Obama's choices for any of his appointments. He seems to be picking the right person to fill each slot based upon their ability to do the job. In all of my 40+ years I have never known of any president-elect to assume such a critical role in the running of our country before he has even been sworn into office. Having been around this long, though, I do know that our CIA has held itself above the law for a long time. We have subverted, undermined and even overthrown foriegn governments in the name of American Democrocy without anyone ever being held accountable. That has to stop if we want to be viewed as anything other than a hateful nation of greedy racist.
