I enjoyed reading this essay.

I would guess "up their with Sacha Stavisky" was a copyist's error, not Mr. Epstein's. His use of "scarifying" is incongruous, though: Sharks are down there, and barracudas, and other scarifying species.." Say what? If he meant "scary" or "terrifying," he should have said so.

To the editor:
do you now see what you have allowed to fester and erupt? the majority of the readers think the author is quite pathetic and full of himself. he does not deserve to be published here again. he has bared his tainted soul.
he can't even spell 'there" in the correct context! better you should treat him to some golf lesson at the Palm Beach Country Club-- in that "preposterocity of' 'snobbery' ".....

You make some good points that would have been better made without blaming varying degrees of Christians by name. Greedy Jews can just as easily influence greedy Christians. You don't think things like things like this were going on even before there were Christians, and not just by Jews.? Or is this simply a thinly veiled piece on reverse racism? Kind of looks that way when you state that Jews should have never intermarried.

You also can't tell me some of these charities didn't know fully what was going on and perhaps the poor people they were supposedly helping weren't really all that helped, but it did set up a nice front for political agendas.

IMy jaw literally dropped when I reached the second paragraph of Mr. Epstein's article and saw the word "their" used instead of "there" ("up their with Sacha Stavisky"). What! Has Newsweek been forced to cut the proofreading budget and rely on spellchecking software? Is this now truly the end of civilization?
I fumed along for a few more paragraphs and then laughed out loud at the word "preposterocities." Delightful. All is forgiven, at least for the moment. But, please, don't let that spelling thing happen again - I generally read my Newsweek over morning cereal and coffee and these surprises are messy and interfere with my digestion.

I was very surprised by the disdain shown in the article for golf. Golf is no more trivial than any other sport; any sport (or perhaps any activity) can be made to look trivial in light of eternity. "How can grown people care about who puts the most balls through a hoop or who carries an inflated pig skin over an arbitrary line?" After all, who will care in 5000 years? So all sport is on the same footing in this respect (as are any other non-utilitarian activities as well). But, on the contrary, sport creates challenges which are interesting and which often demand the best in us at whatever level we play. We can learn a lot about ourselves and olthers from trying to meet these challenges. Golf, in particular, is arguably of special value since it has a demanding code of ethics, involves duties of courtesy and respect for our fellow competitors, leads to lasting friendships among competitors, and involves aesthetic appreciation of nature and of the features of golf courses themselves. Besides, why must we choose between sport and serious engagement with intellectual and political issues? Why not both? Indeed, conversations on the golf course have contributed to my own writing on a variety of serious topics. I thought this column relied much too much on stereotypes, and the stereotypical view of golf was among the more egregious ones.

Your article ???Uncle Bernie and the Jews??? is mystifying indeed. Unless I entirely missed the writer???s point, the take-away message seems to be that Jews should quit playing golf and get back to honest work. And???get this???losing their money is just payback for being too assimilated or naming children Taylor or Morgan.



I wasn???t aware that Elie Wiesel was a ???trust fund baby,??? the complacent and lucky recipient of parental funds deposited so long ago in the Bank of Auschwitz. And I???d venture to say that most Jews are keenly aware that it???s a dangerous world out there, whether wearing Lacoste shirts or the combat fatigues of Israeli soldiers. Excuse me, but what is wrong with Episcopalians? Last time I checked we freed this country, fought in every one of its wars, founded and funded most of its great institutions, and continue to devote ourselves OFTEN ANONYMOUSLY, by the way, to bettering our communities. Even if we have trust funds we do not coddle out children. That's why we send our children to freezing New England prep schools. Golf is no more trivial than tennis, soccer, or any othe sport. It takes patience and finesse, and provides a mixture of intensity and relaxation that is healthy for the mind and body. And note to Mr. Epstein, expert on snobbery. Episcopalians rarely name their children things like "Hunter" unless that is truly a family name. That is not our style. We are more likely to name our children Christopher or Nicholas, or Eliza or Charlotte. That said what is wrong with a Jew creating a name like Brooke or Hunter? Isn't it a tradition to name your chilld after a deceased relation? And if the deceased has an archaic Hebrew name, isn't easier on the child to be named something more mainstream and modern?

I am tired of WASP-bashing. Really, WASP's don't sit around trash talking other ethinic and religious groups. That's not our style. We value positivity, energy and good humor.

The writer seems to think those who our Jewish should not have evolved as everyone else of non-jewish faiths have.
People in this country, Jewish, Catholic, those of the various Protestent groups were all hard workers who have now become merely those who work 9-5.

We are now told that we should all be alike, and that there should be no separate cultures. Think alike, do alike, worship alike or better yet have no beliefs. We are being led to being a faceless society marching to the same drummer.

Everyone is missing the bigger picture here. Some of the "victims" of Madoff were his closest friends in the Jewish community. Bernie is a hero to these people and I'll tell you why.

If you notice some of the biggest "victims" are philanthropic (tax free) trusts. Madoff and company were instrumental in the housing collapse funding subprime and generating COD's and SIV's and handed those off to investors outside of this tight knit group. So Madoff actually knows what's about to happen to the US economy and had a plan to save all those tax free charities of his friends.

The plan was simple, he, along with his business associate Merkin and Sy Syms of the infamous money laundering bank IDB of NY funneled the core of the money away to off shore accounts originally with USB. Since then the IRS has been on USB's back so Madoff (made off) in turn transferred all the money to Israel and his friends and investors know where this money is and how to get it. Note, IDB of NY was fined 12 million dollars for failure to implement mechanisms to prevent money laundering after a 2 billion dollar transfer from Brazil raised the eyebrows of regulators.

This is the reason why Madoff "pleaded" guilty so as to limit the scope of the investigation to only discovery of his assets. His accomplices in the money laundering bank haven't even been questioned by "authorities" and this is another big reason why he's seeing no jail time.

With Shappiro at the helm at the SEC you can bet the obstruction will continue. The IDB is tied to Israel's Olmert and the Israeli military. Subsequently Madoff will get very little jail time and may even try and pull and "Sam Israel."

This Madoff double bluff could be described by what Madoff "told" his sons when he "confessed," "It's all a big lie."
