Tyler Ginsberg, Mackenzie Rosenthal, Hunter Fefferman, Kelly Rabinowicz are not confused and not embarrassed about their formerly unheard of name combination; although their non-Jewish mothers were. They either wish that they would have taken their conversions more serious or they regret marrying husbands with weak personalities. None of this a novelty. Statistics show that the majority of the Western World Jews are not in any way affiliated with anything Jewish. The smallish, unathletic who have deciphered the magic of money don???t even join the ???jewish??? Golf club (not to mention synagogue or yeshiva). And guess who they marry. Today???s Jews don???t know their history and for sure not their religion. Their parents were just too busy dreaming about whacking away these little balls ??? how pathetic. Joseph Epstein???s reminder of the reason d???être of a Jew is not only not welcome, it???s not even understood. Our Sages of blessed memory teach that it???s never too late to return. And this is no mishegoss.

To all of the Tyler's, Mackezie's, Hunter's and Kelly's there are pockets around this country of Sammy's, Emily's, Max's and Sarah's whose parents are striving to recapture some of the traditionalist values that we fought so hard to attain in post WWII America. Values that were based upon learning, teaching, studying and cherishing- rather than the materialisitic portraits that make media news. Hopefully, the traditionalists will reign in the long run. Though many have been afffected by the Madoff affair, and many others simply scared at the overall economy and the cast of crooks that have raped Americans clean of their hard earned dollars, not enough people are scared enough yet to recognize the long term changes that must take place to rebuild our lives. All of us need to get back to basics- to restructure and leave a world for our grandchildren's children to enjoy.

This editorial reads like a stuck up, self indulgent Jew-glorification, while perpetuating old stereotypes, including towards non-Jews (or as you would express it: "WASPS"); for someone so paranoid about antisemitism you sure are doing a heck of job fueling the very ideas you fear.

I am not Jewish so my comment can and probably will be interpreted by some as anti-semetic. Uncle Bernie preyed upon his own kind because he could. He used his position in the Jewish community to lure ever more wealthy Jews into his scheme. He never could have done it to a bunch of Hispanics, or Italians , or Irish Catholics or Arabs because he was not a member of their group. Ethnic ties run deep in America, and it has always been easier to scam loved ones and friends than strangers. Bernie knew how to earn the trust of other Jews. He betrayed them by being one of them.

Professor Epstein is not only a great writer but also a great teacher. He knows hot to use his intellectual gamesmanship to make us stop in our tracks and ask what that was all about. I believe he takes himself far less seriously than his not so alert critics.

I knew the author well when he was in college. It was a time in his life when he was not so involved in his Judaism, not so philosophical about Jewishness, not so perfect as to his ethical behavior. Now, he is a wonderful writer who has garnered acclaim for his books. Along the way he seems to have appropriated credentials that give him the right to label assimilation and Waspification, and comment somewhat snidely on the Jewish wealthy. What chutzpah!

Why is it considered ok for Epstein to refer to "Wasps" in such a derogatory manner? Meanwhile he is always on the "qui vive for anti-Semitism." What a bigot!

jews are not people in the strictest sence,more like little monkey children.as long as we watch them,make it illegal for them to be in financial possitions, and keep their population down the world should be alright.

bravo to JB619 and his remarks on Epstein's nasty take on Madoff as representative of what's wrong with the American Jewish community (once great). superficial and supercilious He forgets, however, that Jews are still the largest single group when it comes to contributing to charity, and indeed, note the hits such non-profits took in Madoff's scam. It's not the money but what you do with it, and whereas there may be lots of fat cats who enjoy playing golf, to condemn (and make fun) of the vibrant American Jewish presence in this country does not make me proud of someone named Epstein (whatever his first name might be).

On the psychological aspect of the story. There is no need for anti-Semitism, Christians and Muslims Jews any intelligence on the part of thievery history tells us. The easiest way to steal to go among your family members and friends to take them over first or your religious partners where trust is respect this kind of behavior is definitely seen on all fronts of the human story

Madoff is an embarrassment. I agree. But, what about those guys at citigroup and lehmans and bear stearns and morgan stanley and on and on...who made bad mistakes, took our (taxpayers) money, and gave themselves huge bonuses? on top of that, they wont do with our money as they said they would-- has anyone gotten a loan recently?
throw those guys in jail. some have said: "but who would run our financial institutions?" run? what? this is like a bad repeating nightmare-- read from the first line again. I have a solution: for the guys who aspire to become management of a financial institution-- lets include anyone who wants to be a financial advisor-- should have to go through a psychological test to see if they have a propensity to steal. if they do, post the results so anyone can see, and send them all to an island somewhere where they can steal from each other. Is it ridiculous? not really. think of the tests we subject candidates for Police and Fire and other low paid positions.

Being Italian and from good old Brooklyn, I remember being across country awhile back , on a business trip, and being asked if all Italians were in the mafia....so I answered by saying, no but we eat pasta every sunday and love movies like "the godfather" and "goodfellows". And while the mafia did make money off other Italians and others, They would "take it like a man" and go to jail, as long as we could keep making the pasta and slicing the garlic ever so thinly.
