I feel sad for Monsieur Peresse. I;m sure he loved his lifestyle. However, I have seen someone die an ugly death most likely from the effects of second hand smoke and feel no nostalgia for public tobacco consumption. Killing yourself is one thing. Killing others is another thing altogether.

To stop smoking is a good thing and a smart thing just like buckling up when driving 50 miles an hour or more, but it should be our choice, no grown up should be telling another grown up what to do. I see it as a way to make more money in the courts.people don't care if people are dieing from smoking or car accidents, unless they are loved ones.

Amazing was the time, when paris was sexy. Now it's well on its way to becoming as generic as the rest. Good vs. Evil, smoke vs. non, nothing differs its all the same now. At least we have the memory of how sexy it once was.

Think11, you don't have a very good point. The "government" at a local level has been telling "us" for over 100 years now the minimum standards for running a business, most formidably when it comes to safety. That is the key issue here. In the early days, building codes and inspections were ways to ensure the safety of people patronizing in a poorly constructed or unsanitary building. Restaurants have been required for years to receive a health license and to receive health inspections.

Although yesterday's problems of botchulism and similar ailments are rare, pervasive health problems today include the ingestion of trans fatty foods and cancerous cigarettes. The government is not stopping anyone from selling tobacco; it is simply allowing Joe Consumer to purchase cigars as a gift if he so pleases without inhaling secondhand smoke. The government has always been in the of providing safety for its citizens. It is a shame that these safety restrictions have not come sooner. The government is only saying if you want your nicotene fix, don't take anybody out with you.

It is sad to read this story. I live in Minneapolis and can remember when there were neighborhood jazz clubs where local musicians jammed on "blue Monday"'; where on a Saturday night you would see your neighbors and one of the best cooks in the neighborhood would come in just before closing to sell home-made fried chicken or slices of sweet potato pie. That "flavor" of life is gone whether in Paris, Minneapolis, and--sadly--New Orleans.

oh and btw, alcohol vapor is a carcinogen, found in quanties to exceed smoke even in places you can still smoke and drink...again, check reports, check the EPA for actual statistics...check reliable places for information, instead of just grabbing whatever side promotes as truth

  • Posted By: valark @ 01/14/2009 4:19:03 PM

Non-smokers who want to change the rights of smokers are idiots because a car puts more pollutants in the air in a mile than a smoker does in a year. Check the EPA for the stats on emissions. Even your average BBQ is way worse.

A non-smoker who doesn't want to force their choice on anyone else is not an idiot.

The issue is also more about privacy laws and sensibilty. Non-smokers actually do hack and cough and have resp. illnesses as well as cancers. There is a correlation, not a direct causation and calling people stupid or idiots on either side is really fruitless.

Mr. Dickey has produced a thoughtful piece but one that belies the linking of two aspects of life that are now seen as being "unhealthy" but the only "way-of-it". I would offer that it was big tobacco and big liquor that did their best to link a sophistocated lifestyle to 9 to 5 alcohol consumption and tobacco addiction. So, today, we lament the passing of such iconic establishments as the Paris cafe because, it seems, that the conviviality of earnest conversation or debate has always been viewed as holding a second-seat to the accompanying smoking and drinking. Perhaps a more telling question is that, in the past, people were only viewed as being interesting or intellectual when they smoked or drank - an argument that big business would still support wholeheartedly. Ah, quelle d'mage (or words to that effect).

It is deeply sad for Paris's cafe being banned now days from smoking. The French ,in particular the Parisians are the only smoking society with a stlyle. No one can smoke a cigarette looking like a French does.It may seem immature on my part to say that, but looking it ast a different angle of good looks along the arts of body languages. There really is a distinguish attiitde about them soming a cigarette;,the French smoking a cigarette has the allure and the chic.
    C'est la vie!

I think it's ridiculous government telling private business they can't have smoking. Casino revenues are down, bar revenues are down restaurants are down, I hope all you non smokers are supporting these establishments.I hope the rest of you non smokers who did want to be exposed to cigarette smoke where you work are enjoying standing in a non smoking goverment unemployment line! perhaps you should have changed jobs instead.

WOW!! Talk about media puppets. To marciashines. Show me any law that you think gives you that so called "RIGHT". To Mgm531. First, if your were a fat pig, you would be the reason health cost are so high, second, if by what you type holds any water, you should be dead. Matter of fact, we all should be dead. Cause I'm sure by now we have all have been around smoking. But here we are, typing away. Smoking has been going on for 100's of years. My point. It's a BUSINESS CHOICE. It's their RIGHT (marciashines) to allow it or not. But don't worry, the goverment and the media will tell you what to belive.

Yes, it is sad. Our governments have taken our lives away. We cannot do what we want anymore, we must do what the government tells us. Even if we own a business, we cannot do what pleases our customers, we must follow the laws laid down by those who care nothing about peoples pleasures. Its not about people having a choice anymore. You know, you don't have to go to an establishment that allows smoking if you don't want too, but you do have to go to an establishment that doesn't allow smoking or stay home. You can smoke there for now anyway.
