Okay, I tell you what, we should divide the world in half (like we already do with our imaginary borderlines as Mother Nature would never insist "this is the USA and this is Canada") and put the people who want to control and impress their will on eachother live on one half and the other half goes to the people who like to "Laissez-Faire" (Ooh, I even threw a French word in there for effect). What does the public think of that? Crazy, maybe? Not as crazy as banning a trivial thing such as smoking (what about completely banning fat for all you MORBIDLY obese folks out there; and it is probably you people that complain smoking is going to kill you when it will most likely be that bucket of Crisco).

First, I ain't fat, second even if I was, it would have no effect on YOUR health, and third if you still think your choice of killing yourself by smoking tar, carbon monoxide and cyanide doesn't effect everyone else around you, you're a blithering idiot! You want to kill yourself? Go ahead! Just don't take me or my family with you.

If I want to open a business establishment restricted to smokers who are you to tell that person otherwise. I think you have a God complex going on here. Just like every non-smoker you think you are superior. The fact that you had to correct your grammar and spelling within your own statement even after posting it gives me the impression that you are actually the "blithering idiot". Haha..."blithering idiot"...go inbreed with the rest of the monarchy.

First, I ain't fat. Second, even if I was it wouldn't effect your health. Third, if you think your right to smoke carcinagenic, carbon monoxide and arsenic laced cancer sticks trumps my right to not breath those poisins you're a blithering idiot! You want to kill yourself? Go ahead! Just don't take me with you!

Of the two political parties in america, neither really believes in freedom. One party would protect certain freedoms they agree with, and ban others. The other party would tell you they beilieve in freedom, while they trampled the constitution and made everything else illegal.

I don't know about all the "rights" issues, I just know it will smell better inside....

So one of the most appealing things about Paris and its cafes was that they stunk of cigarette smoke? How sad is that? Ah yes.... someone else's carcinogenic smoke stinging your eyes and tainting the aroma and flavor of your food... the memories.

I find it simply pathetic that addicts try to convince themselves that their suicidal (and for others, homicidal) addiction is a "freedom" that should be protected. I hope none of these smokers mind if I consider it my personal freedom to sprinkle asbestos all over them, their food and their children when they're in public. They would certainly cheer me on, no? Then again they might, since their sense of self preservation was crushed long ago by their pervasive need for a 'fix'. Unfortunately, freedom-hating 'big brother' took asbestos from us. What tyranny! Ah warm, fuzzy asbestos..... the memories. Paris just isn't the same without it.

You are probably morbidly obese, so how would you like us to take your fat and carbs away from you.

      • Posted By: Mr.Dave @ 01/14/2009 2:47:45 PM

In addition to being smoke-free, I'm trim, healthy and athletic. I enjoy playing ice hockey... one of those things you can do with normal lung capacity and a healthy heart. Sorry to disappoint you. To address your rather arbitrary response directly, with rare exceptions, morbidly obese people don't spread death to everyone downwind from them. If smoking didn't spread stench, filth and death, it wouldn't be banned.

Can't post here I'll bet, but if I could it would be in total agreement that the morality poiice need to chopped off at the knees.

In response to ItMo - "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. " Benjamin Franklin

I do not and will not accept that the government has the right or responsibility to save me from myself.

    • Posted By: ItMo @ 01/14/2009 2:44:13 PM

Haha, I seriously doubt that smoking came under Mr. Franklin's concept of "essential liberty".

That line have more variations than I can count, but it first showed up in some of the notes Mr. Franklin used when addressing the Pennsylvania Assembly in '75...His topic for that address was the security of the people in the face of a hostile opressor; some delegates had some pretty drastic proposals about how to proceed. There were ideas bouncing all over, and none of them came remotely close to what we're talking about here.

I keep seeing the same perceptions pop up...Step 1)Restricting smoking . Step 2) Complete and total slavery of every human on earth.

Do you guys also think it's a violation of your civil liberties to have to go through security checkpoints in order to board an aircraft?

    • Posted By: grumpyguy @ 01/14/2009 2:30:31 PM

Mellyo, I agree withyour statememt that the government should not be responsible, however, there are far too many who disagree with that by their lack of personal responsibility and expect the government, institutions, and you and I to take care of them when they become ill or injured as a result of their activities. Good examples are those folks who haave litigated against tobacco companies because they had lung cancer, restaurants because they got fat, etc. A product was made available to them and everyone else. They made a choice to use, overuse, or abuse that product which resulted in that individual's personal demise. It is as a result of this "victim" mentality thatthe government has stepped in to regulate. In short, rules have been made to compensate for the folks too dumb to think for themselves and being able to understand and accept the risks of their activities.

i am a former smoker who believes we should all have consideration for each, but smoking ban laws crack me up.it is ok to smoke in casinos, but no one can have one in a bar with a beer, which by the way,are both legal substances that are taxed. also,to those that are obese and say that does not affect anyone else, you are delusional. i have worked as an rn for 30 years. our patient population have grown by leaps and bounds, and and i mean that in the pounds sense. a patient over 300 pounds was a rarity, now a daily occurence. we are expected to lift, turn ,bathe and help move all of these obese people and do it without hurting ourselves. many health care workers are injured on the job(oh my,lost wages, increased health costs) by obese people. so please don't compare these issues.

Things like this are why our kids are going to grow up to be total pussies. Pretty soon we're all going to be wearing hazmat suits and everything will have rubber bumbers on it in case someone gets hurt. On the bright side, it will be a world without lawyers.

This article is a gratuitous glorification of smoking. Why promote a repulsive, sickening (literally), and expensive habit? Certainly, the cafes of Paris are a wonderful part of human social history, and their survival would continue to enhance the quality of life in Paris. But their demise is not likely related to a smoking ban. As in cities all over the world, the rent on downtown properties has escalated as high-profit businesses compete for space. Hopefully, alternative avenues for relaxing and socializing in public will somewhat compensate for the loss of sidewalk cafes in Paris. It is likely that there, as in many U.S. cities, the mall will take up some of the slack. One can sit in a mall food-court or faux cafe for hours without being disturbed. Of course the mall lacks the glamorous aura and intimacy of the French sidewalk cafe, but the people-watching may be even better.

Hey CRYSE you are getting more toxins from LAZER and DESKJET printers that is UN REVERSABLE where as second hand smoke when you remove yourself from it WILL go away THAT IS A FACT! A Major concern I have is when WE THE PEOPLE ARE LABLED with GOVERNMENT INFLUENCE... What is next? A SMALL YELLOW STAR THAT SAYS SMOKER? Are they going to put me on a train or putt me in a camp for smoking? Sure Smoking should be banned from INDOOR PUBLICK PLACES but, unfortunaely, IT IS NOT STOPPING THERE... What about my college banning smoking in my own car with the windows rolled up out doors? Or, the local police pulling me over because I have a van, they sawe me smoking, and wanted to make sure I did not have kids in the car... FINE, I AM WITH YOU WHEN IT IS ABOUT INDOOR PUBLIC PROPERTY, but it has not stopped there my friend, it is getting much deeper than that when you have opinionistic, racist [YES ANTI SMOKING I AM TALKING ABOUT IS LEGAL RACEISM!] people who go out of there way to enforce stupid laws that take place ON MY PROPERTY OR ON MY LAND just because they can, EVEN when my second hand smoke is miles away from anyone it would harm...

YES IT IS MY RIGHT TO CHOOSE TO SMOKE, AS MUCH AS IT IS YOUR RIGHT NOT TO SMOKE... IT WILL BE JUST AS RONG FOR YOU TO TELL ME I AM MESSED UP AS IT WOULD FOR ME TO DO THE SAME TO YOU... I BET WITHOUT THE INTERNET TO HIDE BEHIND YOU WOULD NOT BE SO COCKY...

  • Posted By: marietta04 @ 01/14/2009 2:37:31 PM

I just don't understand why the health police wants to impose their will on everybody. Why don't they allow free will and the simple logic of supply and demand to just be. They could allow establishments the right to choose between being smoking or nonsmoking places. This way, people that want to smoke while they eat and drink will go to smoking places and people that don't want any smoking around them will go to the nonsmoking places. I'm sure that those that are so convinced about the hazards of second hand smoking will not sacrifice their health for a plate of food served at a restaurant that allows smoking when they have the choice to go to nonsmoking restaurants. This way, if there is a demand for non-smoking restaurants, there will be more and more. But maybe that is the problem. Maybe there aren't so many true second hand smoking paranoids around that would pick a restaurant for it's smoking policy rather than for its food quality and ambiance. This is why they take the choice away from people like they are children. Even those who don't smoke or those that hate people who smoke should see a problem with this assault on free will. Today you might not care because it is about something you abhor but, who knows, tomorrow it might be something you do care about. Each time you allow a freedom to be taken away, you set a precedent, and each one becomes more and more intrusive.

The way I see it, until cigarettes or cigars are considered illegal, the government (city, state, etc.) has no right to ban smoking... anywhere. If individual property owners/tenants want to ban smoking in their establishment whether it's a workplace or place of entertainment, so be it. Alcohol, obesity, smokeless tobacco and a myriad of other things kill people everyday (and, like cigarettes, alcohol use can kill people / make people sick who are not using the product), but I don't see any discussion about banning those things from public places. If you don't like something, stay away from it - it's that simple. Or, make the product in question illegal. It will still happen, but at least it's better than the government giving the ok to sell a product and then telling us we can't use it.

    • Posted By: GeoFla @ 01/14/2009 2:36:23 PM

Pretty good point. The tax revenue from smoking pays a lot of bills. Perhaps since you can no longer use the product in state buildings, they should get rid of the state taxes charged on every pack...

Sigh....next we are going to hear from murderers that it was their choice to kill someone. And if people don't like it, don't go outside of a panic room for the rest of your life. There are more non-smokersa than smokers. majority rules, bye bye public smoking. Don't let the door hit your butt on the way out. Why not start public acid farms where we can all get some to take. Hey, its our choice. Let me spray mace in someones face if they look at me the wrong way. Don't like it, don't walk near me. I love listening to smokers whine that their "rights" were taken away. last time I checked, it was te 21st century and laws were passed. Who here speeds? What happens if a cop clocks you? Why should I go under the speed limit if I don't want to? My right togo fast and if I crash, its my fault....... I can come up with these all day, but reality is, no public smoking, so deal with it

  • Posted By: imightbecrazybut @ 01/14/2009 1:42:37 PM

There is a simple answer. Create 15X15 unvenilated rooms and let the smokers go in there for their meals. Let's see how much they enjoy their food

    • Posted By: Jondman7 @ 01/14/2009 1:54:13 PM

I bet you are morbidly obese the way you talk. If you want to ban one health risk why not ban them all?

      • Posted By: imightbecrazybut @ 01/14/2009 2:08:20 PM

Actually I am 5' 7"' and way a 142ibs. My blood pressue is 110/60. Never been over weight my entire life and I am in my late 40's

        • Posted By: Jondman7 @ 01/14/2009 2:28:18 PM

Okay, fair enough I have no right to cause you adverse health risks but if I wanted to open an business I should have every right to allow whoever I wanted in and if that was restricted to smokers than so be it. Think of it like Men's and Women's washrooms. The way you impose your will/ideas on others reminds me of young fellow named Joseph Stalin.

      • Posted By: imightbecrazybut @ 01/14/2009 2:13:54 PM

By the way I am not saying smoking should be banned. I am only saying it should be banned in public places. Smoke at home and in your car all you want. Hopefully you do not have kids.
