There are apparently some of you who think that because someone doesn't 'work out' and maintain a very active lifestyle they are just lazy, ie the sit on their "fat ass'" . Some of us not only have a family history of over weight, but have physica; problems that make exercilse nearly or completely impossible. Why don't you wtih the nasty superiority complex just try it with a genetic muscle tone disorder, fibromyalgia, neuropathy in in your feet and legs{from the fibro}, circulatory problems from having 6 large children, and respiratory problems{I am currently recovering from an abscessed tooth & root canal & pneumonia}. Oh yeah, I am 64. It takes all the energy and physical ability I have to just just take care of me, my house & yard. I am a widow and do it all by myself unless I can manage to get one of my kids to find time in their busy lives to come over and do something like repair the dishwasher that just died. Come walk a couple of days in my shoes before you rush to judgement. I do exercise as often as I can but just as I get a bit built up along come an asthma attack or a fibro flare and it is two months before I can do much more than walk at a slow pace. Some day you to may be old and handicapped so have a little understanding and compashion you big headed idiot!

Weight loss is important but it should be followed under a a guidance of health care professional if you are taking prescription medicien like Xenical or Reductil as an option for weight loss treatment

OH now Ticked Off... calm down. You are missing the point. Did you happen to notice who i was addressing. Not attacking with a superiority complex, but superior knowledge of the body. Sure, there are people out there, like yourself, with issues not related to exercise. That is not the issue here. It is the attitude of those, particularly in this country, that will use any and every excuse not to excert energy past getting from A to B. It is a shame for those others with natural causes. Now then, with that said, I was responding to the uneducated person below. There is a reason we are the fattest nation and it has NOTHING to do with people like you and abnormal health issues. Anytime the topic of health or excercise comes up, someone has to throw in there a reason not to. Anytime someone sees an obese person, you hear someone say something negative, then you will hear someone say oh they cant help it. Umm, ok, that works for a TINY percentage, the rest is a lazy nation and no self control. Which also spills into every other aspect of this economy. I don't care if you are 34, 64, or 84...move!! Hats off to you Ticked off for busting your ass....again, read the topic and the real discussion before pouring the poor me out. Thank you

People definitely do need exercise. We didn't evolve sitting around and we didn't evolve eating the things that are available today. I run 7-10 miles ever day and try to eat as natural a diet as possible--meaning mostly fresh vegetables, lentils, fish, etc. while limiting sugar and fats. I'm 5'8" and 118 lb living this way, and well over 30 years old. It can be done.

Toss the twinkies and get moving. Honestly, the concept is simple. For some, the exercise is the hard (but necessary) part.

"Weight Loss" in general is counterproductive! Always has been always will be. Weght loss programs continue to feed into the public's insatiable need for "weight loss now" and fully know they will continue on a diet cycle each year. This generates revenues!...revenues!...revenues! Body contouring is what people shoukd desire....i.e., keep the muscle while losing the fat. TriuneNonDiet.com

To akbollman: YOU need to get the facts straight. The body is designed to move, not sit on your fat ass. Not a surprising retort from someone who probably doesn't exercise. YES, excercise increases hunger. YES it also increases metabolism along with other HEALTH benefits. It's not just about losing pounds in fat for asthetic reasons. The author here speaks of facts, not just opinion. ANY doctor will tell you that blood profiles of a exercising person will be better than that of a sedentary person. Do a yahoo or google search, there is no excuse to argue this topic. Have you heard of cardio vascular or heart disease? How about adult (fat ass) onset diabetes? How about high cholesterol or high blood pressure? etc.........go eat a twinky

Exercising is not actually called for. This particular author needs to get off the "exercise more and eat less" bandwagon. That is not necessarily true.

Each person's metabolism is different--some respond best to low-calorie and exercise, others respond better to high protein, still others respond better to mostly vegetables. It would be so nice if these various authors would quit contradicting each other (particularly with the exercise garbage--we exercise to feel better and to make our bodies work better, not to lose weight), it would help.

People who exercise get hungry--when they get hungry, they eat. Exercising makes people eat more, not less. While a person with tremendous will-power might resist this, it is the reason most people fail at the diet-and-exercise cycle. Finding a diet which helps the given individual lose weight and only very gradually stepping up the exercise so that hunger is managed is probably best. And, there is no one diet that will help everyone. As wodewick has already said--see a doctor. The doctor can give you the best idea about how you can lose weight and how to avoid injuring yourself.

Face it, the best advice on losing weight is not not read these stupid articles by journalists who don't have a clue what they are talking about.

Go see your doctor. Get a checkup including blood tests. Your doctor can give you an unbiased evaluation of your current condition, and can suggest improvements to your diet and exercise routine. Then if you're willing to make long-term improvements to your lifestyle (i.e. stick to it) you'll be healthier and happier for it.

Same old BS. You even go so far as to recommend the US Gov food pyramid. what a joke. turn that pyramid upside down and you'd be closer to the truth. Low carbs is the only truly healthy diet.

• Posted By: chiefagc @ 01/15/2009 4:17:25 PM

More BS favoring the government solution of moderation. We're all different- some thrive on low-fat while others add weight on that same diewt. Low carb works for many despite whaty gov. nutritionists would have you believe.
The government knows as much about diets as doctors do- nothing.

I believe most people need more than a book to lose weight. It is all in how you look at. There is no magic pill or quick fix. I followed the Smart For Life Weight Management program AKA "Cookie Diet". This Program changed my life. I lost over 70 lbs over a year ago and have been able to maintane my weight. The cookies are a tool they are all natural and good for you. They also offer other products like soups, shakes and muffins. They taught me how to change my life style. I do keep a food journal and found that helpful. Of course I now have an excercise routine as well. To make weight loss permenant....you have to change. Diets are called FADS because of those who want the quick fix and then put it back on. One has to do the work. I love Smart For LIfe ... I couldn't have done it with out them! Check out smartforlife.com.

While a more in-depth discussion can be helpful (a la betsygindc's disappointment), I appreciate reviews of diet books that are just plain bad. Too many out there for the less than savvy to be able to distinguish among.

Thanks, Newsweek. While a more in-depth discussion could be helpful (re betsygindc's disappointment), too many people are taken in by diet books. Pointing out books/diets that definitely aren't helpful is very useful, too.

I do the following and find them to be good tips:
- some good whole wheat carbs such as pasta, try the HodgesMills - milled with flax seen 100% whole wheat paste (not enriched, beware of this as it is not the same).
- plain, low-fat yogurt with veggie mix is a good dip for your celery!
-whole wheat snack - try a seving of triscuits, and maybe a slice or two of Krafts 2% sharp cheddar, and an apple; this is a healthy snack (about 300 calories) but has good fiber.
-if you eat nuts, beware of a serving size, as they are very very high in calories...eat for nutrition, not to fill your belly
-eat brown rice, not white.
-eat beans once a day! Sautee with onions and extra virgin olive oil, or simply rinse and add to any salad
-keep salad dressing on the side, and by dressing without Fructose Corn Syrup. Infact, run from anything that has this ingredient.
-consume as little processed food as possible, it is easy and delicious to make your own salad dressing for example.
These are easy tips to follow, and not too bad for ya!

I believe exercise is the key. I had been eating less for a while (about 8 months) but the weight didn't start falling off until I started jogging. I went from about 220lbs to 185lbs in about 4 months. Start small, set weekly goals for yourself and you will see good results.

I am thankful for good health, good eating habits, and the ability to exercize every day. I also have a genetic make-up that means I am relatively small (weight wise). That said, diet and exercize isn't enough for everyone. Please don't get discouraged by this article. Consult your doctor and tell him/her your goals. They can help you formulate a plan that can work for you. I was disappointed that this article was so superficial and failed to discuss any new information.
