43, For a Final Time

He takes his leave neither angry nor forlorn but rather with the serenity of someone sustained by a providential sense of history.

I can see by the comments that George has hit a nerve. It is amazing how educated people are blinded by the written word. If it is written often enough it is fact regardless of the acutal truth. Well done George for showing these "jump on the band wagon" blinded by words not by evidence. Must be time for their second hand smoke to kill them off....

George, obviously does not have a clue about the science of global warming or whoever is paying him to deny it has convinced him that to slap the media down for their'media manufactured alarm' is the best way to deny it. How does this man get so much attention for saying such inane things about global warming? For that matter, how does he rate getting such a prime column in a fairly fair and balanced magazine such as Newsweek? George is neither fair nor balanced and he certainly is out of the loop for a man who is supposed to represent rea news. I don't get it.

"He takes his leave with the serenity of someone sustained by a providential sense of history . . .
Mr. Will, instead of providential don't you mean delusional?

???. . . refused to be stampeded toward costly "solutions" to a supposed crisis that might be chimerical, and that, if real, could be adapted for considerably less cost than will be sunk in efforts at prevention.???

I can???t remember who made this statement but it reflects my sentiments:

When you talk to someone who is concerned about costs when it come to global warming, you know you are talking to moron. The economy is a wholly owned subsidiary of the ecology.

God it's totally plane as day now to see just how twisted George is. The Elections must really have triggered a primordial flaw in Simple Will's Repiglican brain.

George Will , you have to be the sickest, most arrogant bas--rd on the planet. Your job is to cover for Bush, protect the Shrub, and promote your sicka--- Repig Party. Bush will always be known as a simpleton or the Village idiot.

George Will

Your assessment of global temperature trends is seriously flawed. Please see this post to understand the global temperature trends since 1880 and see how El Nino - La Nina events and volcanoes cause short term - temporary pauses in the temperature rise. You picked 2001 - 2008, a period with short term La Nina cooling effects that will fade and the long term warming trend will resume.

As a baseball fan, you have given us the following commentary on a game:

" The score was unchanged in the most recent inning."

You did not tell us the overall score, Who is winning? What inning? Who has the momentum? Are any key players hurt or out of the game?

As a sports announcer, you would have failed to give us an accurate picture of the game. As a national commentator, you did fail to give us an accurate assessment of global warming trends.

"You do know the ones who are in the top 5% of income earners paid 60% of the taxes receipts collected by the fed? And the ones in the bottom 50%(around $30,000 or less) paid a total of 3% of total taxe receipts collected by the fed? Now Obama is going to create even more of an imbalance. "

You're right, those 100 million or so Americans who make less than $3,000 per month should be paying MORE taxes!

They can afford it....it's not like they have to pay for healthcare--they don't have any!

And I don't wanna hear any whining about making ends meet....just tell them to have the parents hook them up with a cushy governor's job.....

...or borrow money (assuming they have any credit) to pay for school (assuming they can get in.....budget cuts have reduced enrollment around the nation) to spend the next 4 years getting an education. By then, the recession that Bush instigated might actually be over and there may be some decent-paying jobs available....working for American companies in INDIA (who receive all kinds of U.S. incentives to operate overseas).

Love,
JM

I just wanted to know what is the percentage of the total income that those 5% biggest earners made. You say they paid 60% of the taxes, but they made much more than 60% of the total income, so they actually paid LESS then the rest. Do you really think that people that live paycheck by paycheck can use any of the many loopholes in the law to avoid paying taxes?
I understand that you are a big fan of Paris Hilton and think she should not pay ANY taxes. No inheritance tax, no dividends tax, nothing.
Get real and stop whining.

This whole Barack Hussein Obama thing is just a big Hollywood farce started by Oprah Winfrey , the NAACP , African-American politicians who control the Democratic Party and the pro-Black movement that the average American citizen hasn't picked up on yet. This whole thing was carefully orchestrated and planned going back 4 or 5 years. Who really cares that its the first African-American to be elected President ? Fact is, is he qualified ? Did he earn it through merit and honesty and integrity ? What's a radical Trinity United preacher in Rev Ottis Moss speaking at the mass in the National Cathederal ? Talk about hypocrisy !! Obama never disenvowed his ties with this hell hole radical evil twisted and racist congregation and its proven with the presence of Rev Ottis Moss from Trinity United in the National Cathederal. African-Americans have to wake up to reality and stop reliving their million man march. Its getting a little stale , if you know what I mean. Black people enjoy much wealth and opportunity in the USA for a long time now...so whats the beef ? I don't see wealthy African-Americans donating their charity to their ancestoral homeland of Africa. America is not only about the poor little African-American crying thinking they deserve entitlement and special treatment. They haven't been responsible. They are lazy for the most part and they are expecting their bro Obama to give them welfare checks at the expense of hard working American taxpayers. Now Obama wants to free the terrorists. Bad , bad mistake. Americans believe Barack Hussein Obama is the leader of the free world.
Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but he's not. The downfall of this over indulging , lazy , narrowmindedness and arrogant society called America has begun and its not stopping. Barack Hussein Obama believes America is a Utopia and when reality hits him he will be a lost soul. Mark my words America , you guys will soon have the whole world turn on your nation for the grief and corruption bestowed on everybody. Keep spending your trillions. Its so ironic you turn to your over indulgence to free yourselves from your over indulgence. Sounds like the time before the fall of the Roman Empire

For a long time I have read Newsweek faithfully... after this article, I will no more! George F Will made a mockery of everything journalists stand for. Every last word was carefully twisted until the message they hid was unrecognizable...Seriously... the reason Katrina was such a disaster was: 1. The US Army Corps of Engineers did not do their job (not state government) and 2. Given such incredible amounts of damage, New Orleans and Louisiana were relatively powerless to fix it, this is when the federal government is supposed to step in...

I reached the sentence which contained "media-manufactured alarm about man-made global warming" and just gave up. You're an idiot. I give up. Do some research please... all scientists now agree there is global climate change...

The legacy of President Bush will be evaluated every day for years. Iraq will be central to this evaluation initially but will dimish over time. President Bush's other actions outlined by Mr. Will should, over time, become more central. I suspect that an ever expanding role of government will continue for quite a long period of time. At some point a majority of the American people will decide that government can not continue to be all things to everyone.

Hey George, quit hogging the bong!

This theory that only history can judge Bush is the last desperate action of a flailing Conservative corpse. Those like George will are trying to do a Jedi mind trick on the American people and convince them that although we've judged every other president by his actions while in office we should wait ten or twenty years to see how Iraq turns out before we should judge Bush. The reality is that if Iraq turns out to be a positive it will be because the current President and future Presidents have cleaned up the steaming dung pile that George Bush left behind. Bush has left with the "I don't give a dam" attitude that he's shown towards the voice of the American people throughout his presidency. His only serenity comes from the fact that over time people will forget how sorry a president he really was.

George Will's defense of Bush and his administration is reprehensible.

I am thrilled to see that America's general illiteracy in science has traveled to even high level journalists. The main data for man-made global warming is a graph that shows earth's average temperature for the past 400,000 years. So it is not surprising that the temperature did not rise in Bush's 8 years, which 0.002% of the above mentioned graph, because 8 years is not even considered in geological time. I hope that in the future, George, you either refrain from editorializing on science or put in the research time to find the correct answer. Either way, thank for contributing to the lack of scientific understanding in our country. Go USA!

Amazing how blind a smart person can be, or pretend to be. Not one drop of american blood wasted on Iraq, not one dollar wasted in Iraq did that "for the security of American freedom". It was sadly only wasted.
Iraq was no threat to America, Afganistan was, and was abandoned even before the fight started.
TSA is not making our flights saver. No one with a box cutter could highjack a plane again. Who stopped the infamous "shoe bomber" was not the TSA, or any of the security measures forced by them, but the crew and passengers of the plane where he was.
The departing administration did not make America stronger, but instead fomented fear and built a "kingdom" based on that fear. America is not stronger because of Bush, is stronger in spite of him.
Is really sad how this George W wants so much to justify the departing one (not one day too soon).

"Within the lifetimes of most Americans now living, today's media-manufactured alarm about man-made global warming might be an embarrassing memory. The nation will then be better off because Bush???during whose administration the embarrassing planet warmed not at all???refused to be stampeded toward costly "solutions" to a supposed crisis that might be chimerical, and that, if real, could be adapted for considerably less cost than will be sunk in efforts at prevention."

The only explanation for this paragraph is that it must be a clever tribute to Bush's butchering of the English language.

Oh please! Global warming has become a bad joke. I was around in the early 70s when going eco was all the rage. That passed into history (except the EPA) and so will the current mythology. I refuse to take seriously any climate model that omits cloud formation. Guess what. There is none. Not a single model deals with it. The global warming hysteria was all about chasing the money I guess. I've seen that before.

• Posted By: davie divergent @ 01/22/2009 5:07:51 PM

I'm a professional meteorologist and I can assure you that climate models contain variables for clouds. Try to educate yourself a little. Oh, I forgot, you might have to revise your opinions!

...And CFCs were just swell for the environment, right?

Conservatives believe in science when their health care is involved, when they want to reliably connect someone to a crime, when it puts a man on the moon or when it helps our military kick major gluteus maximus abroad. When it points to something they don't like... er, they pick and choose.

Make no mistake, if the same number of scientists (including most if not ALL Nobel laureates) came out and scientifically proved a point the right wing approved of, conservatives would beat us over the head with those "scientific findings" until the proverbial cows came home. If the world's best surgeons told someone that they needed surgery immediately, while a very small minority (the ones without great credentials) told him not to worry about it, which would be the smart decision to take?

50 years from now, writings like Will's will look like those antiquated, anti-science writings from the 19th Century, when people with no background in science laughed at the notion of germ, light or atomic theories. When it comes to science, I'll trust the consensus of actual scientists, not George Will.
