So far, Obama has been subject to considerably more stringent oversight than the Republican congress exercised over Bush, so I think the headline is wrong. We're moving from no oversight and downright conspiracy between Congress and Bush, to lax oversight currently. This is an improvement, however slight. Perhaps Congress will provide even more oversight once there is something to really oversee. There isn't really any significant issue to watch over that isn't being done. I certainly think Frank is watching banking decisions with great care.

Obama is just one more corporate candidate. All that will change is who will be getting our tax money.

  • Posted By: kenfromillinois @ 01/17/2009 8:07:21 PM

Obama has brought true change - Illinois Democratic politics - CORRUPTION, CORRUPTION, CORRUPTION.

    • Posted By: cinjo @ 01/24/2009 3:16:18 PM

That remains to be seen. And, wasn't your last governor prosecuted as well? I have not seen any change....I just hear more rhetoric.

In the Age of Obama oversight will be un-necessary

    • Posted By: cinjo @ 01/24/2009 3:13:05 PM

Really? Do you think he is God? Checks and balances are necessary for any who lead this great nation. How scary it is to see people act as if Obama is above the rest of us. Perhaps that is the main issue of the day. Blind acceptance of a man. He can do no wrong.

I just love the "cracked" glasses through which some "so-called" reporters view the world. The confirmation of Barack Obama's cabinet aren't just hitting a few microscopic speed bumps, as these two writers would have you believe. The confirmation of three of Obama's cabinet members are experiencing foot-dragging by the Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. It is 100% because of partisan Republicans who will spend every second of their time doing everything they can to throw a monkey wrench into the Obama administration out of sheer vengeful arrogance and stupidity. The majority of the minority in Congress don't like the idea of a new administration robbing them of their "pocket-stuffing lobbyists" and will spend the rest of their time as members of Congress, dragging their feet and causing nothing but trouble. The sooner THESE jerks are voted out office, the better!

What do you think the Congress has been doing while Bush was in office? Honestly. Are you blind? Get real. That is what alll congress and senate members do. It is called checks and balances, and no one party is any worse than the other. They both do this.

I'm sorry did I miss the last eight years of oversight? I recall a congress that continued to write blank checks for the president to cash right up until today. There hasn't been oversight in our government in my entire life and I'm 32. The only oversight congress ever had was whether or not President Clinton lied about having sex or not. Whew, good thing we didn't let him do anything too good. Just balance the budget by controlling spending.. That was all he could manage with republicans standing in the way and dogging him at every turn.. Oh wait I forgot republicans don't mind spending money as long as it's on something THEY approve of , you know like war and corporate welfare. I am so fed up with social conservatives crying about socialism and spending blah blah blah. No one said boo when 25billion was sent to IRAQ in CASH! I agree with miesque. Republicans are the biggest problem in our country. They think their way is the best and only way but only if they do it. Hypocrites. Must be that fundamentalist christian base thinking they're entitled to make this country into what they want and the rest of us can either live with it or leave. The two party system MUST GO NOW!!! These two parties are tearing our country apart. We must decide to create a new and better government. And we must do it soon. Blessed be~

    • Posted By: cinjo @ 01/24/2009 2:59:07 PM

Our country is great! The two party system works as long as there isn't a majority in Congress with the same party president as there is now. It is part of our checks and balances. Why don't you move somewhere else if you don't like this country?

Good for you Stacy, I am 79 years old and this is the first time I have seen where there is a site on computer where you can find out what is happening, or hear a President tellig you each step. He got off on day one to try and get things done.Weather Dem. or Rep. the houses need to work together and so does the people in our country.I can see where some Rep. are trying to work and come together but there are a lot of them out there and in the houses that are trying to block every step. The money for the housing market was handed out by the Rep. to Bush with no oversight. President Obama is putting oversite out there and is telling how for each thing.I still wonder how The Bank of America was given money when they were able to buy out a loan company and a Bank. The loan company that they bought out they raised the interest on those loans making it very hard for the people to even make the payment. My Sister was one of those people that was in the loan company they bought out and her interest was raised right away. So Why did they get money?

I hope the stupid voters who voted for Murtha are happy. He is willing to take the prisoners to Johnstown, Gitmo bay.
they should put anckle braclets on them and they can live with the senators.

Ha ha ha ha.... Mark Hosenball and Michael Isikoff think that there was oversight under Bush!!! AH HA HA HA HA HA HAH HAAAAA.... Oversight and deregulation are opposing concepts boys. Guess which your party preferred, without moderation of any sort? I won't forget the greenlights that greeted hack bug-killer Tom Delay's treasonous, poisonous agenda anytime soon. Nor the evaporated 350 billion bailout given to the banks (w no strings or oversight) apparently as a gift to Bush's cronies. Thank god the chimpanzee Bush did not get his selfish incompetent claws into Social Security. Go away, you insipid GOP propagandists, and please take flunkie Grover Norquist with you.

    • Posted By: cinjo @ 01/24/2009 2:56:12 PM

Whoa, Buddy! Your man did that bailout more than Bush. Bush was even nice enough to call in McCain and Obama to get their opinion on the package. Regulation began soon after Clinton's administration left, but mostly it was too late then. Remember Enron? The economy had started turning bad toward the end of Clinton's administration. Don't hate Bush. He is a man who had the balls to step up to the plate and to do what he felt was morally right. He didn't check the polls and decide what to do based on popularity. In schools, teachers don't poll the kids to find out what they want to do today. He was a real leader. Right now, you think because Obama is black and he got elected and has so many people behind him that he is going to be the greatest president yet. We don't know yet what kind he will be. Just remember, the one thing that scares me, is that people are exalting him as if he were God, himself. I sure hope he can handle all that power.

All the article is saying is that with a Democratic majority in the congress and now a Democratic President, the checks and balances available to the minority party have been declawed. Not only did the Democrats win the presidency but boosted their standings in the Senate and House. That's all. Just means that that theoretically that the democrats will have little problems getting bills passed. It is probably safe to say that there won't be many republicans chairing any of the important committees.

    • Posted By: cinjo @ 01/24/2009 2:49:32 PM

You are right, but I wonder if Obama is going to honor his promise of being bipartisan. So far, and with his inaugural speech, it dosn't look like it. He took some very poor digs on Bush. I wonder where his 600 million dollars came from that he used for his campaign. McCain only 60 million. I wonder why no one has asked him, yet they have asked Hilliary. I wonder..........I think we have a new teflon president.

  • Posted By: TAZEMAN 25 @ 01/24/2009 2:44:42 PM

Congress and the Senitors should have an age limit, at 80 years of age you have to leave. They also should have term limits. This jobs should not be for life.

  • Posted By: south bend @ 01/20/2009 11:42:56 AM

Yes, that's right the democrats have been in charge for just two years with a republican president. The republicans had control of the house and senate for more than 6 years, They were in control during Clinton's last term. Two years is not enough time to straighten out 8 or more years of republican rule. Everyone is counting on Obama, but no man can work miracles and change the path we've been on for more than eight years overnight or even in a year. I wish him luck, he is going to need it.

    • Posted By: cinjo @ 01/24/2009 2:43:46 PM

He promised change. He has 8 months of blaming Bush. That is all he gets before I start blaming him. That is all Bush got after taking over from Clinton. 9/11 was blamed on him. I give Obama 8 months. He had better have fulfilled all promises by then, and I mean more than just saying what he is going to do in a year from now. Remember, so far he has just said he is going to change things, and you think they have been changes. I will close Gitmo in a year. I hope when he finally does close it next year that you enjoy your new neighbors.

The one thing that journalist fail to consider is the weapon called email. Fortunately, this "new fangled" tool is a really easy way for the American Public to contact both the president and congress committees. Before you begin to prognosticate failure...you should measure the email activity on an issue that the American public is engaged...based on the number of people who attended the inauguration and watched MSNBC, PBS, CNN, etc....you may have misjudged the pressure that we can apply!

    • Posted By: cinjo @ 01/24/2009 2:37:26 PM

Where have you been until now? Besides, Obama is not the first president to have a web site. He is not the first president to have email, and he doesn't really care about you now.

  • Posted By: truetalk @ 01/22/2009 9:40:15 AM

Transparency in government is nothing more than rhetoric that will not be followed by any action, certainly not in Congress. This amounts to pure deceit that is a continuing saga that Washington politicians hope will never change. The mere use of language to influence voters without significant change only breds cynicism. We have come to accept whatever the purveyors of crap send our way as long as the message comes from our party of choice. As Americans we need to challenge messages sent out and follow this with fervor to insure that the message is more than mere words regardless of our party affiliation. Posted by Truth 1-22-09

I agree entirely. Also, the media is the media of George Orwell's 1984. Question what you hear. Question what you see.

  • Posted By: cinjo @ 01/24/2009 2:27:13 PM

Monkey, get ready for more raises in prices and taxes because hasn't President Obama made it clear to you yet? You are going to pay the majority economy's overhaul. He has echoed Kennedy, "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country." Don't worry, you will work hard for your new President. But remember, you asked for it. Change...you just failed to spell out what kind. By the way, Congress has blocked Bush so many times it is pathetic. You can thank Congress for the shape you are in...not your president.....Did you know the President has relatively litte power compared to Congress?

Do me a favor forpeace and don't stick up for us veterans. I am a veteran, and I believe I receive great care from our VA. However, don't forget you liberal that you want National health care. What do you think happens when competition disappears. Doctors who won't care! I am tired of liberal, non military, non veteran Democrats trying to stick up for me. I am in a 100% volunteer military, and I chose to fight! Don't stain what I do with your baby killing ways. Also, just like true Democrats who are in love with money, you voted for the war, and now, when your pocketbook is being hurt a bit, you want out. It isn't to save people, the reason you want out. It is because it is putting you out a bit. Stop your whining, and start honoring a President who doesn't fornicate in the Oval Office.

  • Posted By: cinjo @ 01/24/2009 2:14:34 PM

Woah! I am a veteran, and I am getting great care! I love it when Democrats, non veterans try to stick up for veterans. Man! Don't do me any favors because you don't really care about me. Vetereans are primarily Republicans for a reason. We know our job is not a popular one, but we also know you are free because of us. Yep! You are free to disrespect the office of the President of the United States, who probably makes less money than every company CEO. You are free to gripe about how little you have, while girls in the countries we are fighting for are having acid poured on them for going to school. And you are free to think that the President has more power than Congress, who stalemates every effort for any change. Thank God for George Bush because you are free today. Tomorrow looks like another story.

This response is to Bush who claimed in a previous online Newsweek issue that the reason everything is in a mess is because he got bad advice.

You claim that you tried your best and that you were given bad advice as the cause of why things are so bad. Was bad advice the reason that you lied many many times about just about everything? Was bad advice why you put people who knew virtually nothing about what the government department they were given control of did? Was it bad advice that made you attack a country that had nothing to do with 9/11? Was it bad advice that made you remove the regulations that kept our economy free of all or most of the criminal activity that caused the world economy to go into a tailspin? Was it bad advice that caused you to pretty much ignore the devastating effect of Katrina and then made a mess of it when you did pay attention, including more crimes? Is it bad advice that caused you to not provide the care our veterans need, both past and present? Is bad advice why you choose to use cluster bombs? Is bad advice why you ignored the constitution? Is bad advice the reason for choosing to torture and then lie to everyone about it? Was it bad advice that caused the elections to be rigged and corrupted? Was it bad advice for government officials to have a secret agreement with the oil companies about Iraq's oil? You claim to be doing God's will but you ignore the 10 Commandments, like "Thou shalt not bear false witness." and "Thou shalt not kill." I could go on and on but the fact is that you lied to everyone right from the beginning--by choice--and you're still lying--AND YOU KNOW IT. I doubt if you will ever own up to your crimes but I can tell you that both you and Cheney are going to prison. You wouldn't believe me if I told you how I know that but believe it because you will. And leaving the country to avoid it won't help because war crimes are punishable world wide and any nation can and will charge you. You won't be able to lie and get away with the crimes you committed. I'll remind you of what Jesus said: "As ye sow, so shall ye reap." Every moment of pain and suffereing you caused you will experience yourself. There is only one excuse for what you did that might work and that is the brain damage you have from the drug and alcohol abuse you did to yourself, which itself was a really stupid thing to do. The other possible reason is the way you were raised. I was taught by my parents to tell the truth. I would say that you weren't. You need what you will find at www.forworldpeace.info.

I'll echo what kaufscott said; How can you say goodbye to something that hasn't been around for eight years? We've just endured the most secretive administration in our history, a regime rife with hidden agendas and limited access. Obama has pledged to open communication and bring back the Freedom of Information act. Hopefully this openess will result in less need for oversight. The Bush regime sought to expand executive privilege and hide their actions. It left very little room for any oversight. Where were the Republicans when all this was happening? And in less than one week of Obama's presidency they're complaining about lack of oversight!? How incredibly hypocritical!
