I think the word ???self-defense??? should be redefined. Imagine if someone comes to your home, kills your children, locks you inside the bathroom, and declare that the property is his now! As desperate as you are, you open a hole into the exterior wall to have your hand reaching food, water, and a stone to defend yourself when needed. Unluckily, the invader discovers the whole, cuts your hand, tears down the bathroom over your head, and goes all around the neighborhood saying he???s the victim. Worst, your neighbors who know the truth consent his right to self-defense. This is the story of the Palestinian people. It???s not a thousand-year story, as some people think. It is happening since 1948 when Israelis founded their state on the Palestinian land, and the chapters of Palestinian misery are continuously written under the title Israel???s right to self-defense.

People of Gaza,Hamas claims victory at the expense of your lives not their own.You are expendable to the Israelis and your own government. You are bloody exclamtion points on their charter. You are professional victims, there for all the world to see your suffering so hamas will profit.Stand up now and throw hamas off your back before they decide they need to make a statement again in your blood.Good luck in the next war.

On Palestinian Question, Tough Choices for Obama
I have a question here, why does France have any kind of say in anything regarding world politics. Bitch slap Sarkozy and send him back to his model fluff to do whatever it is Frenchmen do. Point of interest; The French Foreign Legion, a well-respected military force, cannot occupy the same soil with the French army because they are not good enough? They???re not French citizens, another example of someone else doing the French men???s dirty work and then they prance in. (for confirmation ask any American military serviceman that was in Somalia)

Joanne, respectfully, you are way off in stating that Israel is not to blame. If Israel actually wanted rockets to stop and have a viable peace for both parties, they would lift the blockade as the agreed to in June. If they had kept even a fraction of their commitments, there would not have been a conflict. Instead of lifting an illegal naval blockade (which by itself is an act of war) and stopping an expansion that the UN, USA, UK, and virtually every reasonable country has condemned, they drop bombs on civilians. I think we need to ask what we as Americans would do if another country sized one of our states, moved everyone who lived in that state into a refugee camp, set up a naval blockade that prevented any export of goods and importing of medical supplies, then cut off power and drinking water because we wanted the state they seized in the first place. This is Israel butchering women and children in order to crush an entire culture's spirit to justify the seizure of their land. The only reason they stopped is because of some international pressure. Of course they have a right to exist and defend themselves, but these actions are not about either ??? they are aggressive, immoral, imperialistic crimes of war. If we don't start rescinding our blanket support for anything Israel does, this will lead to genocide.

Israelis should get out of israel and leave it to the Arabs?
Americans should get out of America and leave it to the Indians?
Europeans and Asians should leave Australia and leave it to the Aborigines?
Leave Naw Zealand to the Maories
    CRAP!
Leaving Gaza only increased the violence.
Get a life! Go forward, Make peace and stop your hatred.

It seems to many that Israel is the criminals here.If the Palesestinians were to stop bombing Israel and acknowledge them as a state then I believe things will get better..Israel moved out of the Gaza area and they still were bombed continously and all they are doing is PROTECTING their people.Lets get this straight Israel is not to blame here.

The children of any country that repeatedly launches rockets into another country will always suffer. What if a Hamas rocket landed in an Israeli school yard at recess? What if a Hamas rocket landed in an Israeli market filled with children and their parents? The citizens of Gaza are victims of their governments/leaders will. The Israelis have every right to defend their country and protect their eople from terrorism. Only when the Israelis fight back do we see the media's bias and outrage. Why not work on reporting the indiscriminate, unprovoked, attacks that Hamas wages? I feel for the victims of this conflict but until Hamas stops launching rockets into Israel, their people will suffer.

After 60 years, Israel is a highly developed industrial and technological based democracy. The hostile Islamic nations better get used to the idea of living side by side with Israel and benefit from it.Its a disgrace that people can still call themselves refugees after 60 years.Nearly three generations have passed in that time. The winging victim mentality does you no good.Your hatred and growth in fundamentalist jihad fuelled by Saudi fuel wealth is a dead end.Israel is a tiny land mass compared to its neighbours but the surrounding Arab nations except those that have made peace with Israel, couldn't give a stuff about you and use you as a weapon against the "infidels" of the West.Just look what Israel has done in 60 years in the fields of science, medicine and all technology.Palestinians,STOP YOUR HATRED..Stop using your children's programs on TV to continue the hatred into the next generation.Israel would be more than happy to help you if you would allow them.Your way is a dead end.Embrace modernity and education.

It is amazing that none of the Arabs that opted to stay in Israel at its formation are busting their guts to join their brothers in the Palestinian territories.Their life in Israel is too good,
Hamas should be building schools not bombs to educate their people who are mainly illeterate, to get a better life.Look what Israel had achieved in 60 yeare. When Hamas and its cohorts learn to love their children as much as they hate Israelis, there will be peace and prosperity for them all.

To understand the impact of Hamas's approach to warfare, you have to think what it would be like if several times a week, someone drove by your house with his family in the car and fired a couple of bullets at your house. Sometimes, the bullets would make a dent in your outside wall, and you would have to patch the stucco. Sometimes, they would come through a window and put a hole in your furniture or wall, which you would then have to repair. And sometimes, they might hit you or a member of your family. The police either cannot or will not do anything to stop it. How should you respond?

    • Posted By: froy1100 @ 01/18/2009 9:01:25 PM

But you have to put it into perspective. Those who shoot are some people whose house you stole and who you locked in your backyard, not allowing food, electricity nor medicines to get in. What would you do in their shoes?

      • Posted By: Marcus CA @ 01/18/2009 10:28:24 PM

Good question. You're talking about a cause-effect-effect-effect-etc. situation that goes back 60 years.

It's similar to the question you could have asked the native Americans in the 1890's. If your goal is to get your land back, but the people who now have it are so much stronger in weaponry and/or population than you are that it will be virtually impossible to defeat them, at what point do you give up the fight?

At least in this situation, the Jews had an ancestral claim to that land, far more so than any European did here. I would also imagine that if it came to pass that Hamas and Hezbollah decided to lay down their arms and recognize Israel as the sovereign nation that it is, the Palestinian people would be far better off than they are now, and certainly better off than native Americans were on the reservations that we set up for them.

I guess Palestinians will give up the fight when Israel ends the occupation (including blockades and other nasty moves), and they get to live in a functioning and independent state. Until then, they'll keep biting the big guy in the *** even if that means getting a few kicks on the head. These are hardened up bast*rds.

About the legitimacy of Israel's claim to the land, is about the same as the Europeans in America: none. You can't go somewhere showing some storytelling book and a genetic test saying that somebody 2000 years ago living there may have been your ancestor, so everybody living there now has to vacate the premises and let you establish your domain. Colonialism is oh-so-out. But I guess that since the harm is done and Israel is already there, everybody could live happily as long as nobody is occupying and oppressing anybody.

    Fierst,Israel declared cease fire,
thereafter, within very short time, hamas anounced to ceasfire,
now the question is that it will last,or prove fragile.

    aisrael and Hamas,
    has different stance,regarding the ceasefire,
    according to the israeli leadership,
''Israeli troops wpold remain in territory and strike back if the millitants keep firing''
    on the otherhand,hamas is saying,
''It will not recognise the ceasefire untill Israel withdraw its troops from Gaza and lift a trade blockade''

    when i see the stance,
undertaken both the parties of war,
    come to the conclusion that,
peace in the region may be fragile,
but the ground realty is different,
because Israel has seen the reaction,
created in the result of aggression on Gaza.

    United Nations,
    has passed resolution,
which has unanimous support of 14 memebers ,
    of the security council,
it is doubtless to say that,
    the resolution has been disregarded,
but according to my firm opinion, not for more time,
because Israel has admitted that it has made a grave mistakes,
attacking on United nation's school, headquarter, and warehouse,
and the secretary general already ordered for investigation,
who is really acountable for this crime.

what happened in the world people's reaction,
American flage was burned and understood that,
a superpower is indirectely involved in the war,
Israel considered the days a golden chance.

    Countries of the Middle East,
began coming to Israeli opposit side,
which was felt by Israeli leadership,
Iranian president availed a chance to influence the countries in the region.

    The whole scario,
after the aggression taking a shape,
not faourable for Israe,so it will not to break the ceasefire anouncement,
and there are certain chances its armed forces presently in Gaza would be drawn as quick as possible.

Mr.Nordland has indeed rightfully raised the issue of children in the conflict. The innoccent are indeed caught in between.
But why doesn't he raise the issue of the innocent children and civilians in the Israeli side? Simply because for a very long time especially in the west its become very fashionable to only raise deep concern for the welfare of civilians especialy if they are from the Muslim community. Why cant people understand that this sort of one sided concern is what is helping the terror outfits ? Why is it so difficult for people to understand the Israeli veiw point? When will the No -Muslim world understand that all who do not belong to the Islamic faith are not welcome? For them the rest are INFIDELS and will always remain so. And if one were to think that if the world community was to agree to all demands of all the terror outfits , they will still cook up new ones. For the Islamic terror groups JIHAD is a way of life. Period. As long as the concept that the non muslims or INFIDELS are living any where in the world the JIHAD continues. Their world view is not surprisingly very close to the erstwhile communist regimes especially the former USSR.
As long as the democracies of the world do not understand this we will never have the upper hand on the terror groups.
The act of appeasement or dialogue does not work with fanatics , this the world has already gone thru with disastrous result when the United kingdom decided to appease and negotiate with the Nazi's.

the Israeli response was not proportional. It should have fired hundreds of unguided rockets into Gaza.
That would have been proportional and like Hamas:-damn the civilians.
