Obama banishes Bush's interrogation tactics
WE NEED TO OPEN CAMP MEXI DELTA DO NOT SEND MONEY START DOIN THE RIGHT THING.....
Why would Obama demand that all use the Army Manual of Interrogation, invoke the Geneva Convention, and at the same time demand the closure of the facility that has been doing that?
Even many within his own party see the problem with closing Gitmo, even if they use the wrong arguments for keeping it open: http://waronterrornews.typepad.com/home/2009/01/the-conundrum-of-success-guantanamo-bay-debate-rages.html
Reading through some of these comments, I have to laugh out loud. All of you people who think that obama is gonna "save us all" are out of your minds. This man is already taking steps to free his muslim brothers from guantanamo bay and weakening America's ability to gather important, life-saving information from known terrorists. You think he gives a crap about you and your family? Oh, that's so cute... Fact is you are blinded by him now but time will reveal the truth about your new "saviour". As soon as those lunatic muslims attack again - and they will - gather your loved ones around you and hide behind your superior morals and let us know how that works for ya. This country use to have a back bone but all you bleeding heart liberals with your so-called "high moral standards" have put someone in the white house who is opening the door for America to be brought to her knees by these lunatics. It's just a matter of time. When that finally happens, be sure to pat yourselves on the back - assuming that you survive the attacks thanks to the protection of your high morals... You people are a disgrace to everything America was founded upon.
This is no time to be soft on terrorismbut President Obama knows what he's doing; It is doubtful that this killer will be released but I still think if he is to close GITMO the detainees need to be transferred to special segregation units inside one of our Federal pens.
Despite their offenses, TORTURE is barbaric and most absolutely is in violation of Geneva guidelines even if the suspects are from countries that did not/do not recognize/support the Geneva Conferene mandates.
It ain't like President Obama is about to let these scum bags walk with impunity.....He's a lot smarter than Y'all give him credit for.
Once he straightens this mess out, all nay-sayers will be kissing his @zz and begging for his forgiveness....
jahjahluv, you really have a high praise on your messiah. Ibet you're kissing his @zz too, huh?
My name is MAJ Sean Lankford, student, Command and General Staff College, U.S. Army Combined Armys Center, Ft. Gordon, GA and any opinion presented is that of the author and not the opinion of the Command and General Staff College or the United States Army.
The Army has long prided itself as being a team based on values. Values are those aspects of our character, individual or group, that are unwaivering and beyond compromise. While I share in the frustration in knowing there are suspects who have information that could save lives, but are unwilling to divulge it, I think there are lines we should not cross. I applaud President Obama on a personal level for standing up for his values. It does make things easier to degrade to any tactic necessary to obtain information to defeat our enemy in GWOT. However, the ends to not justify the means. America aspires to set an example to the world of being the good guy -- well being good isn't easy, it is just right.
Maj. Lankford, we have a choice, uphold our "values" or risk the lives of our fellow coutrymen. Which do you choose, maj? Be nice to the enemy or protect your fellow countrymen? In time of war, torture is not uncommon. Each side of the battleground do the same thing, trying to gain advantage over the other. We are in an unconventional war, our enemy does not discriminate on his target. We cannot risk innocent American lives, be being nice to these terrorists. If I tortured a terrorist and saved one innocent civilian, I'd be proud to have done so. Let's get real, there's time to be nice and time to be nasty.
The decision by President Obama and his inexperienced staff to ignore the advice of our country's most experienced intelligence and national security advisors is a grave mistake. This partisan decision sacrifices the security of the US in order to appease human rights groups and far-left critics of American policy developed under the Bush administration. For six years, Bush's policies regarding terrorist internment and interrogation have kept this country safe from lunatics who seek to destroy us and our way of life. Our rookie President, with his large ego and liberal mandate, has just shown the terrorist world that he will cave to public pressure in the face of making a tough decision. Back to the good old days of Carter and Clinton all over again. Terrorists and extremists the world over can sleep more soundly now that Obama has taken the reigns. For the rest of us Americans, the threat alert has just been raised to Orange.
"The decision by President Obama and his inexperienced staff to ignore the advice of our country's most experienced intelligence and national security advisors is a grave mistake."
Bush fired his experienced advisors for telling him what he and the neocon interlopers did not want to hear.
Obama hired them Hence the 'change'.

WHAT ?
It seems to me that the rookie president was Bush. He was the one who was asleep at the wheel. And, then taking our constitutional rights away from freedom loving Americans and having the audacity to call it The Patriot act. That is shameful and unamerican to say the least. Now we are going to get the rights back that our forefathers fought so hard for and died for on the battlefield. It sounds to me like you are just giving up and willing to put blind faith in a government that turns its back on our constitutional freedoms. You probably think that you are safe until you sit in prison without a trial for a crime you didn't commit. But then you may be one of those who thinks that everyone in Guantanamo is guilty to start with.
Well put. I agree 100%.

hawkeye77 how excactly did the PA make you or anyone else any safer? You people are crying wolf. You are just a bunch of bigots who are going to find any excuse to dis anything that Obama does to bring respect back to America. Why don't you just roll up into a ball and sit in a corner and cry for your buddy Bush to come back?
Bulls#@%*54 - amybe you are ignorant of the fact that because of the PA some terrorists pllans to have been foiled. Because of the PA, no terrorist attack since 9/11.
NOw, Bulls#%@*54, what's your problem with PA? Obama has overruled CIA officlals regarding ways to obtain info captured enemies. Does Obama know better than these CIA official? When you talk about Obama bringing back respect to American people, that's a bunch of BS.
Kenya is made up of 38% Protastant 28% Roman Catholic and 26% Indigenous religons. Look it up.
LORD HELP US! Does this guy have any idea what he is doing? I already miss President Bush. He is a man that we could trust! Obama is just plain SCAREY!
Don't be so paranoid. Open your eyes. One step at a time, we are going to get our freedoms back. The ones we lost from the Patriot Act. And, you don't have to be so frightened. What do you want? A totalitarian state like Hitler or Stalin imposed? Do you really think you have to give up your freedoms in order to be safe? - It works the other way around, my friend.
freeman - what good is your freedom when you're dead? By the way, what freedom did you give up because of the Patriot Act? Rejecting the Patriot Act is rejecting the protection of American lives from terrorists' activities here in USA. So mr. freeman, has the PA really inconvienience you that much that you would rather risk your life and your family(if you have one))and the American people than have this PA?

The Low Lifes will say it was Bush & Cheney, that Deserve The Credit.
And the delusional hacks like you will give O all credit.
What a laugh this all is. The only clean break in policy is one of politics. Bush was a terrible politician because he did what he said and his administration could not keep a secret. Obama has not closed CIA prisons or Gitmo. He showed what a great politician he is by signing orders that dont take effect for some distant time down the road and include almost automatic ways to avoid carrying through with the order. He gets political credit for sticking to a campaign promise from hack like Isikoff.Once he hub bub dies down he never has to actually close the prisons. His administration I suspect, with Rahm as the enforcer, will be able to keep it under their hat that they are still using the same prisons and interrogation techniques. After all we have had secret prisons on foreign soil since the end of WWII, we have been intercepting foreign communications since the revolutionary war and we have used waterboarding for over 100 years. I dont think Obama is really going to change the reality but is doing a good job of changing the preception. And that is a good thing.
No Later than a YEAR...
That's a Short Stretch of Road.
you cant seriously believe that it will be closed in a year. Obama has been talking of closing Gitmo for two years now. If he was serious about dont you think he would have come in with a plan and not needed a year to consider his options. This is a ploy to get the political benefit of issuing the order and the practical benefit of never having to acutallly close the camp. A week for now 90% of the population will think Gitmo has already been closed and will not want to hear about it.
Yes i can...he Signed the Damn Documents for the Entire World to SEE
If it makes you feel better to believe this way then please be my guest.
How true! While most of us, myself included, have been on here discussing this issue like giggling school girls there is a very real possibility that BHO is engaging in political slight of hand. Perhaps he's more in tune with realpolitik than I assumed. As a fellow skeptic I salute your level-headed analysis.
I don't understand why people keep saying that 99% of the people in Guantanamo Bay are terrorists, or have killed or will kill Americans, etc. A Bush source stated in their defense of keeping the Bay open that up to 10% of the people who are released go on to become involved in a terrorist network. 10%. Which means 90% of the people released go back to their homes and wonder why they were detained in the first place. People have the right not to like the US. Hell, people have the right to HATE the US. They don't have the right to blow us up and kill us, but we should not be detaining people because they don't like us and are vocal about it. If people want to jump around in the streets overseas and burn pictures of our president and the American flag, whatever. It doesn't bother me any, because as long as that's all they do I could care less. And yes, there's a difference between saying "Down with the US!" and "Let's go fly planes into buildings!" I'm proud of my country and I don't feel the need to try and ram my proudness down other people's throats. All the comments on how our President should be blown up and his daughters killed because he did something you disgaree with, and you have the audacity to say that somehow you're better than the guy living in a cave somewhere demanding that American civilians be blown up? Seriously??? And as far as the "there hasn't been any attacks since 9/11 because of Bush", there weren't any attacks like that BEFORE 9/11.
"And as far as the "there hasn't been any attacks since 9/11 because of Bush", there weren't any attacks like that BEFORE 9/11. "
No domestic attacks with people flying hijacked planes into buildings killing thousands...this is true. We DID have: the Cole incident; the first WTC bombing, the east African embassy bombings; OKC bombing etc. There is an element of chance about when and where terrorist attacks occur. There are also concrete natonal security steps that were taken that PROBABLY prevented other terrorist outrages.

Reality Is A B!TCH...
Omaar,
A lot of these outrages happened under Clinton's 'watch'...reality truly is a 'bitch' my friend....I agree.
How would you classify Pearl Harbor?
Our Country is a great experiment in liberty-- and our Country began with the almost unprecedented rejection of cruel and unusual punishment.
Who can doubt that torture is cruel and unusual? And who thinks that they-- or our President-- have the right to turn any American into a torturer to keep themselves "safe?"
For those who do believe that they-- and our President-- --have the right to throw out our great heritage as a Nation that does NOT torture and order another American to become a torturer, I leave you with Benjamin Franklin's words "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
Mr. Franklin also said that he and our other founding fathers had created "A Republic-- if you can keep it."
Depends on how you define torture. I wouldn't call water-boarding or sleep deprivation torture. But that's the twisted thinking of pbpace.
Tell that to the Japanese we prosecuted for waterboarding Americans.
Are you referring to Yukio Asano? Yes, it's my understanding that we did prosecute him for "water torture" AND "beating using hands, fists, club; kicking; water torture; burning using cigarettes; strapping on a stretcher head downward'.
http://socrates.berkeley.edu/~warcrime/Japan/Yokohama/Reviews/Yokohama_Review_Asano.htm
In other words this clown was involved in a LOT more than just water boarding. It would also be instructive to know what form of "water torture" he is accused of employing. It is my understanding he forced water up the nostrils of American POWs. Is this what the CIA operatives did? I don't know the particular techniques they employed. At any rate, IF the water boarding technique caused actual physical damage then I would be opposed. I've heard it argued, however, that done properly, wb causes the suspect to 'sing' w/o lasting physical harm.
Does this, in and of itself, make it permissible in a moral or legal sense? No, not necessarily - but it does add a later of nuance and perspective that we must take into consideration.
well said
Last sentence should read 'layer' and not 'later'.
Yes, it is... Can we do some to you, might be kinda fun...
Depends. For how long? What form of water boarding? Would I win a prize? Seeing as I haven't committed any acts of terror I'd want a little sumpin' sumpin' for my efforts.
Kim, very well said
When I served as a Marine I carried the creed of Honor, Courage, and Commitment whenever I lead marines into battle. When we saw men tortured by the enemy we always took pride that we were civilized and honorable; we followed the code of conduct and never tortured any prisoners. I get pissed every time a weekend warrior in Bush and draft dodger in Cheney dishonored our country by implementing torture. Our country has never supported torture prior to them. I would rather have something bad happen than loose our honor and step down to the level of terrorists; if we do we are the same as them and they have already won.
ksd - - -. Since when is war a civilized event. When we dropped the A-bomb in Japan killings 100,000+ people, was that a civilized act. NO, buit we have to do it to save thousands of American soldiers. It's war, you know, it's them or us. We don't do torture for fun, we have a purpose. We are fighting an unciivilized enemy, they don't just torture, they kill, ya know? Torture is not uncommon in times of war. So, stop your BS about Code of Honor, about going down to the levell of our enemy. If I tortured one terrorist to save one American I ill be proud to have done so.
Bravo to you. Thank you for your service and commitment to the ideals that this country was founded on. We are better because of people like you that not only serve, but take in pride in our fundamental values and don't get side-tracked by what we're told is okay. Much respect and thanks to you.
Obama has to be saluted for his principled position. Just like UK we need to treat criminals as such and quit treating them as combatants or soldiers, and frankly war on terrorism was framed purely for political gain by an inept Bush adminstration. The hardcore terrorist will be incacretated indefinetly and others that are innocent will have their day in court, as any civilized nation should do. The only benefit of the Gitmo has been for Al Qaida as recruiting tool.
Obama has one principled position that should scare us all, his soft stance on terrorism. This ultra liberal democrat seem to think more favorably about the enemy than the people he is supposed to protect. Those who think that appeasement to these terrorists would stop terrorism are greatly mistaken, becasue thses religious fanatics have one purpose in life, and that is to eliiminate the infidels.
Hey alookman, the only principled position Obama has is soft on terrorism. But what do you expect?; He is an ultra liberal democrat, and half-muslim, IIt's disgusting that a president would think more favorably about the enemy than than the people he had sworn to protect. I have no respect for this spinless thoughtless president..
I think Us as American Citizens should sit back and trust President Obama! We already know he is the man for the job.Besides he has God on his side.God , has this under his control..God Bless President Obama and God Bless AMERICA!!!
Thank God this country is waking up. I was beginning to loose hope. Our new president has restored it.
I hope - sooner than later - that Obama figures out the world is not Mr. Roger's neighborhood. Typical liberal. I sure this made him FEEL good.
