No, we haven't turned the corner on the banking crisis—we can't even see the corner. What's needed is a bold, massive jolt to the system.

Zakaria "travels the globe" in search of like-minded idealogues whom he can quote to give credence to his philosophy of a global multilateralism. The majority of the world was not enraged at George Bush's "unilateralism" or look at the US as an economic sham - only Zakaria's left wing social contacts in other countries. Zakaria has continuously promoted Obama even to the extent during the campaign of stating that a brown man would have more appeal and believability in the rest of the world than any of the past Presidents. Now he states that the US is considered an economic carnival act by other countries whose very existence was provided for by the deaths of hundreds of thousands of American soldiers and their own economic situations are far worse. Looking back on the Presidential campaign, of all the candidates who were prepared to intelligently deal with the economy, Mitt Romney is the only one who stands out. He doesn't fit Zakaria's racial matrix but he had a proven track record. Obama has chiefly concerned himself with the establishment of radical social change, the bizarre appointment of social misfits like Van Jones as the Green Czar, and his constant vacations.

Zakaria make a contradictory stand when he makes the statement that he believes the money given to the banks during the bailout was not nearly enough. Zakaria admits his lack of expertise in the field, which makes me question his ethos to make a statement like that. Some other ideas that Americans have are then shown which suggest national confusion and far reaching worry with the banking system in mind.
The accomplishments of Barack Obama are recognized, but his need to hastily face the economic morass we are in is stressed. This needs to be done before America???s ethos as the most prosperous promising economy is lost and our reputation in the eyes of foreign countries ruined forever.

Zakaria establishes a deliberative argument in this article by drawing from the past. The article goes into the past, goes global and then comes back home, all in an effort to support the theme that Obama must fix his eyes on the troubled economy. Critics have analyzed that Obama???s inauguration speech lacked the quality of the words that echo through time. Zakaria brought this to the forefront by exclaiming that the most famous line from Franklin Delano Roosevelt???s first inaugural address, ???The only thing we have to fear is fear itself??????, were not celebrated until sometime after the speech was delivered. During the immediate time after the speech was spoken the word that were remembered were not so great. This might hint that the reason critics have not found that single line that will find its mark in history is because it takes time to sink in.
Zakaria inputs a tone of urgency into the paper when addressing Obama???s need to tackle the economic funk we now rest in. He then emphasizes the tragedy that is our economy. The pathos of the financial safety of Americans is played on as Zakaria stresses the massive problems, obstacles, and deficits of the economy. As Big Worm said, ???playing with my money is like playing with my emotions???. When Zakaria uses the word ???rescue??? to describe the state of the economy, it shows the seriousness of the situation. Japan actions with regard to their economic turbulence in the 90???s is brought up to explain that the actions we are taking to improve ours have proven themselves ineffective.
The paper then goes on to ask and answer questions regarding the George W. Bush administration???s actions regarding this disaster. As Zakaria has proven in past articles, he finds a need to defend and uphold some respect for our former president. He defends his mistakes by stating that the task is not an easy one and not even the Great Barack Obama can repair it with ease. This is extremely emphasized with humor when Government is compared with Hollywood with a statement, ???nobody knows nothing???, and then followed by, ???and yet the government has to do something???.
The deliberative argument comes into play as Zakaria exercises his opinions about policy that must be used to aid the economy. The idea that Obama needs to ???act quickly and on a massive scale??? coincides with Obama???s own idea presented in his inauguration speech that the main problem with the Bush Administration was that it did not make hard decisions. Rhetorical questions are used to question the reader, which accentuates the thoughts running through the minds of American citizens.

Since everyone is talking that we only need to have taxcuts to stimulate the economy not a stimulus bill let me ask this:since I now draw unemployment ( due to layoff )can I get a tax rebate on my unemployment check.?

Actually, Paulson had the correct solution with the original TARP idea. I don't know why they lost their cool and just blew that money. We can do this the same way we did the S&L, which also involved real estate and, unknown to most, ultimately did not cost the tax payers anything. In fact, we actually made money.

Create a resolution trust company, a "toxic bank" and give a ball park price on these toxic assets, say 40 cents on the dollar. All mortgages bought up by the Gov't automatically reset to 3%. After one year, the rate will increase to 4% four five years, after which time they will reset for the remainder of the term of the note at 5%.
Borrower retains the right to refinance into the private sector.

Any bank selling agrees that all other non-distressed mortgages it holds on owner occupied property as of the date the bill goes into effect will immediately reset to 30 years at 5%. unless they otherwise qualify for a better rate or term.

With this plan, you fix the banks by clearing their bad assets off the books, you raise household income by reducing mortgage payments, stop the decline in real estate by stopping most foreclosures, support housing for the underprivileged, and ultimately the Gov't will make a profit either on the interest or by selling all or part of the portfolio after seven years.

Oh, and did I mention that Gov't revenue might actually go up, not just because of the increase in disposable income, but also because of less in mortgage interest write-offs as a result of the reduced rates.

It's all about society? What "matters" to who? Sure the banking industry, {get that, "industry"} is a bust for one reason; greed, and the greedy type of person that has dragged this country down for years. Feed a dying animal for what?
We can poke a stick at it, and see if we can get a little more from it. Our monetary system needs only one thing: get the jew out of our affairs, and things will become normal.I calls it as I sees it. And you know, it is the problem.

JFK put it best, not that it is not known to every first year economics student.

From the NY Times Published: September 18, 1984 : Rationale for Kennedy's Tax Cut

In a speech before the Economic Club of New York on Dec. 14, 1962, President Kennedy said:

''Our true choice is not between tax reduction, on the one hand, and the avoidance of large Federal deficits on the other. It is increasingly clear that, no matter what party is in power, so long as our national security needs keep rising, an economy hampered by restrictive tax rates will never produce enough revenue to balance the budget - just as it will never produce enough jobs or enough profits. In short, it is a paradoxical truth that tax rates are too high today and tax revenues are too low - and the soundest way to raise revenues in the long run is to cut rates now.''

Having read much of the discussion below, I am struck most by the vituperation, the pure hatred oozing from some participants' pores. Civility, people. All of us need to stop listening to the Rush Limbaughs and the Keith Olbermanns of this world. Start listening to sources that do NOT make a mockery of the term "fair and balanced". Condemn those whose behavior and words are purpely partisan, regardless of party affiliation and regardless of your personal leanings. As Americans, we surely have stake enough in the outcome of this crisis to hope and pray for the success of the current administration! Cool your jets, tone it down, leave your personal brand of religious dogma aside, and speak politley, rationally and from an educated position. Choose resources that don't necessarily parrot your view. No one truly knows what will work to revserse this awful mess, but those with an economics degree and experience in the financial sector most likely have a leg up on the rest of us. Push Congress to put the necessary governance in place, and let the experts do their best.

I've been reading all of your comments for close to an hour straight. And I'm moved. Many good points have been brought up. But the one that sticks with me the most is the concept that we as Americans have to CHANGE THE WAY WE LIVE. We have to accept the fact that the American lifestyle as the world knows it, and as we have been living it, was built on quicksand. Spending money we didn't earn on things we didn't need. Are you prepared to live humbler? Forever? Do you understand that a permanent shift in your spending habits and your entire conception of the value and purpose of money is the only lasting solution? i see a lot of spirited arguments here and a lot of concern, but i honestly don't think many of you are prepared to reformat your thinking with regards to money.

Contents of Obama's letter to Iranian President leaked according to unreliable sources. Mr. Obama tells Iranian President::
    1. Please forgive us for allowing President Bush to call you Evil and a sponsor of terror. I will prosecute Mr. Bush on war crimes and crimes agains humanity and send him to Guantanamo.
    2. I regret that our Yankee Imperialism forced your country to develop nuclear weapons.
    3. I am sorry that we have sided with Israel all these years.
    4. Please forgive us for sponsoring democracy and freedom. This is very very culturally insensitive and politically incorrect.
    5. We deeply regret our aggressive promotion of American culture. I am particularly embarrassed by Paris Hilton. I would also apologize for Elton John, but he is British.
    6. I am sorry that American troops have been in your backyard all these years. They will not be there much longer.
    7. Please forgive us for not having turned in that guy Salmon Rushdie.
    8. I am sorry that we did not say I am sorry before
    9. I got a campaign donor who would love to develop some ski resorts (you know like Aspen) in Iran.
    10. If you behave, free tickets to Bruce Springsteen concert.

You could be right, you could be wrong. You are not an expert, just a journalist. In fact, I don't even think the experts know what to do. They only know how to act as if they know; this is made easy by the fact that many of them have convinced themselves that they actually know how to get us out of this mess. The only thing we can do is to do something that is not obviously wrong (like raise interest rates). Other than that we can only pray that what we do does improve the situation or at least not make things worse than they otherwise would have been.

You are right, Mr. Zakaria. The Greatest Challenges and thus Expectations which Barack Obama face are unprecedented and look almost insurmountable. Nevertheless, I am sure that he will succeed. We just have to give him adequate time. May God be with him, and America, and the world!

Obama understands that as a black man, he has alot of work to do. Why? The media will actually start doing their jobs and questioning everything, and so will many Americans who gave a rubber stamp to our previous 43 presidents. Obama has continually said that the job is not easy that is ahead of him. Wow. I have never seen so many people secretly hungering for one man to fail. Look, his fate is tied with our own, so you should pray that he does well. Man, jealousy is such an ugly thing.

"The media will actually start doing their jobs and questioning everything"

Good. Journalism that doesn't speak truth to power is worthless. Makes me wonder where they've been hiding for the last 8 years, though.

      • Posted By: 40YearR @ 01/27/2009 12:39:13 PM

What pisses me off is that the media suddenly got brave when McCain lost the election. Until then, they spent 8 years kissing Bush's ass. Now all of a sudden, they are brave?

The only real exceptions to this cowardice are Matthews (who has attacked every president since his career began), Olbermann, and Stewart.

          • Posted By: Mark Thieme @ 01/27/2009 10:52:19 PM

You are kind. Here's our puzzle for tonight:

Parse this sentence from Jane's missive: "Thank goodnes from Obama that his supporters don't think."

Thank goodnes FROM Obama... and then something about his supporters being dumb.

Now, I will admit, Jane's comment stung a little, but it might have stung a lot if it had been comprehensible in any language I speak.

Maybe she is from Argentina. Who knows?

Well, people from Argentina should be proud if she is.

Let me know if you have a better idea, Pia.

            Goodnight for now.

What do you think? Where is she from and what was she trying to say?

OBAMA AND THE DEMOCRATS WON. THE PEOPLE VOTED OBAMA-BIDEN AND THE DEMOCRATS TO LEAD.

So Obama needs to stop trying to please the Republicans. The Republicans are not sincere in their negotiations of national economic stimulus package. The Republicans are getting a "2-for-1" from Obama and the Democrats.

[#1.] - The Republicans are trying to negotiate using the same failed policies of the past, and if they get their way, Rush Limbaugh and the extreme Right will be pleased.

[#2.] ??? But if the stimulus package fails with Republican tired failed policies attached, than the Republicans will still blame Obama and he will take the fall.

        • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 01/27/2009 7:24:55 AM

See? This is exactly why I've said that bipartisanship is a joke. Mcfrugal is a prime example of why republicans should be marginalized, not brought into the decision making process. Screw 'em. They are worthless to our nation.

          • Posted By: 40YearR @ 01/27/2009 12:31:50 PM

I agree completely, Doc, that these hopped up haters are a cancer on society and our political process. (Guess I'd better put on my asbestos shorts now) they and those who feel justified in pandering to and manipulating them, are what is wrong with the republican party.

Where you and I might disagree is the extension of that notion to the republican party generally (at least as far as a result being a one party system goes). As long as extremists and LIVs are a featured, if not central because they are numerically essential, elements of the party, the party will appropriately be marginalized and functionally meaningless. This is as it should be since radicalism, backbiting, distortions, etc. are all that is visible of the party now.

Yet, I lived in Hawaii 27 years. There were real reactive reasons why they came to be powerful, but during that time the Dems had a stranglehold there, the entire system, or d@mned near all of it, was corrupt. Maybe not to Chicago extent, and I'm sure there are honest Dem politicians in Chicago just as there are and were in Hawaii, but it was "wired' in a way that still makes me shake my head.

That experience convinced me that we need a viable two party system. Any political group that becomes dominant, entrenched will become corrupt. That is human nature. (Maybe it's roots are genetic. Maybe the survival mechanism, that drive to serve one's own interests, is what also drives so many to exceed reasonable bounds.)

We therefore need a viable alternative to both parties. I do agree, though, that until the republican party purges itself on these types and a strategy of seeking and pandering to them, many moderate republicans like me will be forced to vote to keep these types from control.

            • Posted By: Mark Thieme @ 01/27/2009 6:46:55 PM

Republicans should be shipped back, en masse, to Antarctica in order that that might wait in joyful hope for the Rapture. While the ice melts, they can either deny the reality or build a really big boat without a paddle.

              Somebody has to do it.

Besides, they are already out of their minds, let them be out of sight too.

Whichever party is in power always stands to lose more than they gain. That's why administrations at the national level see-saw back and forth between parties.

Do your job well? Great, we expected that of you because we're paying you to do it. Screw it up (which is, by the way, far easier to do)? You're out, and the other party takes charge. The President can't worry over-much about how much credit/happiness his opponents recieve, because sending a torpedo down their throats also blows a hole in the hull of the country. Obama is the President of the Republicans too, his job isn't to do a better job for Democrats, but for the country.

That said, the will of the majority is that Obama do things his way. He recognizes this, and has little need to negotiate besides the fostering of bi-partisanship. The current economic crisis is not the correct place to negotiate, but Obama owes it to his electorate NOT to negotiate on the traditional Democratic Party fault lines of minority rights. He's got to be a smooth operator if he wants to do his job AND placate the Republicans, and that's why he's the President and not you or me.
