know what I find troubling about this? Conservative Republicans were voted in as conservative republicans. So what if their numbers are shrinking, they're representing the people who voted them in? The goal of our politicians shouldn't be to dilute belefs and stances due to the popularity of another. Oposing views should just run on their views, the people pick what they want. By making merging both democrats and republicans into that shade of purple, we're just going to get stuck with one heaping pile or crap

So the GOP gave Bush free reign for eight years of utter lunacy- spending trillions of dollars on a war based on subversion and duplicity now believe it is insane to create a stimulus package to support the middle class from the brink of their politically authored financial collapse???
We "the great union" brought to our knees by their narcissistic culture of greed with their gut driven reactionary autocracy.
The ol double standard that allows the hundreds of CEOs and big business to fleece the middle class,
the self righteous??? good ol boy club??? that showed no historical intent or interest in oversight and regulation of our institutions have taken the middle-class out to the woodshed for the beating of a lifetime.

They want us to believe that integrity, responsibility and wisdom all of a sudden reveals their inner-culture after years of political decadence.

The Ugly American is alive and well!
    RIP GOP!

The Republicans are willing to wreck the country in order to stand on their flawed "principles." It's way pastr time for the American electorate to vote these Limbaugh-worshiping clowns out of office.

  • Posted By: stephen.Lawson @ 01/29/2009 8:04:27 PM

The GOP will drown holding on to its failed economic philosophy. The anti-government party also became the party of moral intrusion -- seeking to have the government decide moral and personal matters. If they want to be treated as irrelevant, fine with me. Let's just ignore them.

Who cares how the republican house members voted, or whether they want to revive Reagan, or Goldwater, or Pontius Pilate? Clearly, the stimulus package didn't require even one of their votes.

House republicans have rendered themselves irrelevant.

What is NOT being discussed is that neither approach works in the 21st century. The underlying ISSUE is that the FORM of the U.S. Government does NOT match the requirements of the population of this nation. And, until the U.S. allters ifs form of government; and replaces the political system with one that IS representative of our citizens, the U.S. will continue to collapse.

There IS a way to provide for a recession-proof economy. Wall Street will simply have to be replaced. The United States of America is NOT "united" and never has been. WE in the WEST have NOTHING in common with those in the EAST. And, the criminals on Wall Street who OWN those on Pa. Avenue and Constitution/Independence Avenues are the enemies of those of us on MAIN STREET.

The issue is NOT an issue of parties, or economic theories. It goes MUCH deeper than that. And, so far, no one among the news folks have recognized it, let alone, disccused it with us as Americans.

From the Democratics Dictionary of the English Language:

bi-par-ti-san: 1-the act of appearing to be bipartisan. 2-fully accepting the terms of the opposite party without any consideration to your side of the arguement. 3-not of, or relating to Barack Hussein Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid or any liberal.

  • Posted By: John Dough @ 01/29/2009 5:30:53 PM

What money are they accepting? The so called tax cuts are mostly rebate checks to those who already pay no taxes ie: the majority of the dem base. This bill in the house version is so loaded with pork its oinking. The senate will bill will be more balanced and in the end the tax cuts will push closer to 400 billion house repubs want with a lot less pork. The e-mail system was so overwhelmed they dropped the condom money right away.I doo not support this bill job loss appears to be bottoming out housing starts and sales were up slightly in December signs the econoomy is slowly starting too move in the right direction. Let's not overdue this by mortgaging more of our future for today.

    • Posted By: josemarty @ 01/29/2009 5:56:59 PM

john dough, a name from the past.,Try doing a little of your own research. The info you're repeating is just wrong. The job market is not bottoming out. Where did you get that from?

  • Posted By: tlopes @ 01/29/2009 5:44:51 PM

Once again, Hirsch parades the training he received on his first job at Pravda. Same old Leninist tactics of only relating facts when discussing HIS side or HIS messiah, I mean politician. When discussing the opposition, always be sure to posit only colorful innuendoes and hypothetical scenes, using "as if" more than a Valley Girl. Way to go, Commisar!
In reality, anyone in his right mind would vote against the bill as it currently exists, regardless of staged appearances or urgings by Obama. If you can read, you will see that every pork-laden dream amendment ever envisioned has been stuffed into the "Stimulus Bill" Hah! Most of the stimulus is the stimulus of the Democrat urge to spend like a drunken sailor with a terminal illness.
It is exactly "as if" someone called 911 for an ambulance, and the Dems thoughtfully decided to load it up with ping-pong tables, rocking horses, snowboards, and mountain bikes, to the point that no medical equipment or drugs would fit, before dispatching it to the scene of the accident. It won't do the victims any good, but hey, EVERYONE ELSE WILL HAVE SUCH A GOOD TIME!!!. So what if the patient dies? That is the true nature of this bill's content.
But go on, Hirsch; keep marginalizing the loyal opposition by comparing them with those from the past whom you consider discredited. You did exactly the same for the entire eight years of the last president; now you suddenly think the pres is too cool for school. Man, would I like to meet YOU behind the gym after school. Your abuse of your (dying) magazine's power is sickening, and so are you, Comrade.

Republican Senators who vote against the Stimulus package and then accept the money have no ethics. A Senator that describes the Package as socialism, wasteful and damaging to our country must opt out or be exposed as a person who knew it would pass and sat back and profited from it. The Republicans are phony on this issue and most of the others. Their supporters are so gullible which explains why the Republican is so successful in the poor Southern States.

    • Posted By: HolyRoller @ 01/29/2009 5:12:07 PM

This bill has so much PORK it could almost make one think...maybe Hussein isn't muslim. He is gonna OWN this deal. The Republicans will NOT support it. They know in two yrs. they can retake Congress...cause EVERYONE is gonna blame the Dems....rightly so....

      NOBAMA!!!

      • Posted By: josemarty @ 01/29/2009 5:34:50 PM

You're a clever thing aren't you? Pretending to support the Republicans and all the while setting them up for the big let down. The Stimulus Bill will pass for sure and it will take some Republican help. Who could bear the weight of being the vote that could have saved the Country. I'm not agreeing the package would work, but if it fails to pass, who will know?

Are you just a free spirit who enjoys shaking everyone 's tree?

    Michael,

I must admit I haven't read much of your stuff, nor do I read much from Newsweek, period, but I can't understand how a man such as yourself who is educated and someone who "lives" in the political world would no so little about history. To state that Hoover was a conservative in the mold of Taft, Goldwater, or Reagan, implies that you either no very little about the subject or you do and just trying to mislead the reader in thinking that free market principles was the cause of the depression or our current situation. Hoover was not a laissez-faire idealist; to the contrary, Hoover was believer in "big government" solutions. He raised taxes and increases tariffs, no doubt a contributing factor to the great depression. He also was the genesis behind many of the New Deal policies. So to lump him in with conservatives or free market thinkers is not only incorrect, but frankly absurd. You should read your history.

It is no use trying to break down and critique or discuss this article. It is pointless leftist nonsense and speculation. I guess it may generate some discussion, but as an article seems worthless.

  • Posted By: HolyRoller @ 01/29/2009 4:11:34 PM

The BarackStar and the Demwits "OWN" this so-called stimulus bill. The Republicans would be fools to go along with it. It is doomed to failure. By some accounts it is 12% stimulus and 88% pork. Much of the money is for projects that will have a 0%-negative effect...much more is for projects that are 2-4 yrs out. So much PORK...it almost messes with Barry's mohammedness.

Pres. Soetoro know this...that is why he is virtually begging the GOP to come on board...He can see a changing of the guard in 2010.

    • Posted By: josemarty @ 01/29/2009 4:28:12 PM

If the Republicans help pass the package in the Senate, they are fools. Am i quoting you correctly? Guess wha?, It can't pass without them. The Senate just like the House will have a few who won't or can't vote yes. If any of the Republicans vote yes, it will be proof positive that they want the money and were hoping to get it without getting their hands dirty. That is cowardly to say the least. To sit back and bitch while knowing the cash would flow to your home state.

      • Posted By: Iam3rd @ 01/29/2009 4:41:59 PM

Some GOPs will make political deals to vote for the bill. The same as the Dems before. It is all a form of selling out and porking around.

      • Posted By: HolyRoller @ 01/29/2009 4:39:10 PM

The only place cash will flow to...is Demwit pet projects...that will be 0% stimulative...some even negative. Tax cuts ALWAYS spur growth...QUICKLY. The reason that Pres. Soetoro is against it is...he has TOO MANY payoffs to make to his loonie base....HE OWNS this piece of crap...and you are wrong....He doesn't need the GOP to pass it...he NEEDS them for political cover...and he AIN'T gonna get it, unless he gives on the content of it...Who knows...We all will pretty soon.

Tax cuts, the republican answer to everything: recession? Tax cuts! bull market? Tax cuts! Too much government spendng? Tax cuts! Junior has an earache? Tax cuts! Someone burps? Tax cuts!

Cutting taxes is easy; the hard part is cutting spending as well, something the republicans had every chance to do over the last 8 years. Instead, the spineless toads have bankrupted the country.

    Bleeping incompetent hypocrits!

    • Posted By: josemarty @ 01/29/2009 4:38:47 PM

Big Business..tax cuts..Wealthy..Tax cuts....Middleclass, no, it would be bad for Big Business and the Wealthy!

    • Posted By: Iam3rd @ 01/29/2009 3:07:06 PM

Not very many politicians that I can remember have been good at cutting spending in a wise and effective way. From any US political party.

      • Posted By: nimodahooligan @ 01/29/2009 3:15:52 PM

        true...

everyone is holding the guilt now, politicians, citizens, repubs and dems. i admit i blamed alot on the bush administration out of spite because bush is incompotent, but this is everyones problem, and everyones fault all at once. no one has made wise spending decisions, no one has come up with viable plans that have at least a 75% success rate...or even 75% potential success rate...

hopefully this plan will do more than the last stimulus injection and the bailouts...
