Bush lawyer directs Rove not to talk to Congress—once again
hang 'em high!
He is not in power anylonger how can he direct anyone? His lawyer is and I think locking up all the washington politicians and lawyers should be our next "bail out" package.. Bunch of theives they have no morals at all, no concerns for anyone but their greedy selves.. lock them all up and toss out the key!
So much for what George W. Bush along with Karl Rove and what Both Did To this Great Nation and it's People.
Read Onward
President Bush issued a statement yesterday in which he heralded New Year's day as "an opportunity to remember the events of the past and look forward with hope to the year ahead."
But as Bush looks forward to leaving office, the nation is stuck with the results of many of the Bush administration's failed policies.
To mark the passing of Bush's last full year in office, ThinkProgress rounded up statistics on some of the most significant effects of Bush rule in 2008:
??? Number Of U.S. Troops Killed in Iraq: 322.
??? Number Of U.S. Troops Killed in Afghanistan: 151.
??? Number Of Jobs Lost: 1.9 million.
??? Number Of Banks Federal Government Now Owns Stock In: 206.
??? Number Of Uninsured Americans: 47.5 million.
??? Change In Housing Prices: declined 18 percent.
??? Change In Health Insurance Premiums: increased 5 percent.
??? Change In Number Of Delinquent Mortgages: increased 75 percent.
??? Change In Use Of Food Stamps: increased 17 percent.
??? Change In Dow Jones Industrial Average: declined 35 percent.
??? Change In Bush Approval Rating: declined 9 percent to 29 percent.
Paul Krugman noted recently that the Bush administration's failings have often been obscured in the short-run because the White House was particularly effective at inventing an alternate reality that it then "impressed on the public."
In 2008, however, despite its repeated attempts to wish it away, the reality of its domestic policy failures caught up with Bush administration and the nation.
Excellent post, Omaar!
Wow, what intellectual prowerness.
You have a problem?
Why don't you take a look at these, without which we would not need to be having this conversation.

I hope I live to see these people squirming and brought to justice.
I second that execution.
When iknowledge essential to the Democratic Process of the United States are hidden from authorized individuals than we are no longer working within a Democracy, but in fact we have degraded to a Dictatorship. The Bush Administration has set back the Democratic Process in this Country to a time before our Constitution was even written.
Both parties have turned this country into a corporate-ocracy.
"Obama Ducks Hard Choices"
http://www.newsweek.com/id/182762
Obama should not have ducked, he should have stood up and said "Mission Accomplished." That would show he's just as edjamakated as the last president.
Seeing as how there is no National Security issues involved here, it is clear Bush, Rove and Meirs are very ashamed of their conduct and have disgraced themselves. By continued stalling in this matter they only make the situation worse for themselves.
I can't help but believe that the political two-party system literally fails and is actually a large part of the problem. That is just my opinion but as an example just look at all of the comments offered, how emotional, irrational and illogical they are with their extremely polarized biases and with no real objectivity or discipline for validity. True that some just enjoy the debate, even invite argument and then laugh at their ability to prompt emotion from others but yet many seem to honestly defend a strong bias without giving credit to the real validity of the more moderate positions. Any defense of the Bush-Cheney administration as being other than self-indulgent, irresponsible, sociopathically belligerent and even criminal in having arrogantly pursued their private agenda is totally blind and unreal. Any rationalization offered for having elected Obama as the result of other than having had eight years of Bush-Cheney is totally naïve and also unreal. One extreme simply demands the need to be tempered by the opposite extreme. Both parties take advantage of manipulating opinions based on individual biases, without ever allowing the recognition that their extreme positions are only exploiting people's emotions while pursuing their political interests. The country's best interests consistently fall victim to the politicians' best interests and that isn't about to change.
The only way it can change and have the benefit of offering the people positions that represent their best interests is to have power more diluted and with entities presenting real answers to each of the real issues rather than the pendulum always swinging back and forth providing total power first to one and then to the other party. It isn't a matter of having power divided between the two parties and then causing dead-lock but rather of having additional legitimate parties dividing the power, aligned with the people's different concerns and necessitating honest cooperation, coalitions and more consistent moderate governing. The following conditions really prohibit that from ever happening. First and foremost, the necessity for huge amounts of capital in politics literally prohibits many of the best candidates and any new parties from getting off the ground. Next, the reality is that 'power corrupts and total power totally corrupts' and that is what they all seek. Then, extremism actually satisfies their political goals and is what they won't easily give up. And lastly, the politicians, Special Interests, lobbyists and the select few all have real control because of the large demand for humungous amounts of capital and there is no way they want to lose that control. It can also be added that it is simply a desirable, easy and lucrative life for them. Whatever they say to sway the people the truth is 'it ain't going to change' and they know it and it is just silly for us to then say what should be or to debate it.
Politics isn't suppose to be about the politicians and the Special Interests who support them; it is suppose to be about honestly and responsibly governing in the best interests of the people. Today there seems no doubt that American politics has gravitated to be just about the politicians and what is in everything for them, which is the result of the two-party system.
whatis-I have read many of your comments and they are excellent! Karl Rove most def. needs to be interrogated!
Sorry I can't post below, reply buttons seem to be out of order again.
It doesn't matter whether you are a Republican or a Democrat: the words "absolute immunity" have NO PLACE in a democracy. As a wise man once said, truth is not afraid of questions. It remains to be seen how Democrats will handle this and if they finally managed to grow a pair but every single one of them should be held in contempt if they allow this to go on and not hold those responsible to the full measure of justice.
Hold them accountable!
We must also remember that democracy is more than 2 wolves and a sheep voting on whats for dinner. Congress at work as investigators or prosecutors is at the very fringe of their Constitutional powers. Do we really want a roid-raged legislative branch going at it like there will never be another political change of season? -PB
There will never be another political "change of season" unless people are held accountable, and answer openly and truthfully. There is no reason to not be a crook if crooks are not brought to justice. There is enough to bring Rove in for questioning, and there is an obvious cover-up at some level. Unfortunately, Rove thinks he is above the law.
By political change of season I mean the electorate's change of heart. That was quite clear. You simply can't see through your all-consuming hate.
In this case we demand it! We demand accountability, we demand integrity, and if congress will not stand up for our values who will?
Ummm, why not? I seem to remember a Whitewater investigation that ran on and on, and produced only the affair Lewinsky. If that was deemed appropriate by the RepubliCONs, an investigation that started with something attributed to the President prior to his taking office, and ending with nothing save an impeachment orchestrated by Newt and Tom Delay over the Presidents bedroom manners, I would think they would be even more keen to investigate malfeasance in office and subversion of the Constitution by the last President.
No, but I do not want abuses of power forgotten only because that administration was able to stall investigaitons into the next administration.
Also, this is simply NOT an immunity thing. If some federal po-po or int'l tribunal has the required measure of proof of crime, well giddy-up... Right now the so-called "ham sandwich" has yet to get bagged by a grand jury. -PB
Ahh...
These embers have burnt out.
Where do they burn now?
Lol! Embers? From your fire? Cold enough for one.
You are cold?
It's cold in "our" state!
But Pia is very warm, and very sweet!
Well thank you whatis,... likewise.

Go Pia Go!
All right, my cheerleader friend!
Hello and how are you? Missed you.
Executive privilege, even before Congress, is not absolute for Rove and Miers; and their claims are weakened by the facts that Bush is no longer President and that Congress has a legitimate and important interest in the politicization of the DOJ and the U.S. attorney firings. The letters signal the former administration's intent to stand by its claims of executive privilege, but they do not change the underlying legitimacy of the claims or provide legal cover for Rove and Miers. More at the Constitutional Law Prof Blog here: http://lawprofessors.typepad.com/conlaw/2009/01/president-bush.html
The only rationale for executive privilege is for the Executive (Branch) to be able to receive unfettered advice. It's not for a "head start" before the next guy gets elected. The same executive privilege valid in 2000 doesn't expire in 2009 or 3009 for that matter. Congress can't sleep through the crisis and then drop the hammer on the man as soon as he leave the building. -Pete Bensen
Priviledge should never be used to cover up... People need to be held accountable, so integrity is served.
There is no priviledge coverig Rove in this. And hopefully no matter how he prolongs it, he will be brought to answer just like all Americans should be brought to answer. Our integrity of our institutions has been corrupted, and accounability is in order, and required.
Even when executive privilege is a valid excuse for not testifying, it has never, before the Bush administration, been used in such an "In-Your-Face" way. There is NO precedent for simply NOT SHOWING UP, when subpeonas have been issued. The claim of immunity has to be for specific questions asked during the congrssional testimony. When asked a question which they feel falls into a protected issue, they then invoke the privilege.
By issuing blanket immunity for nearly every person summoned, and for virtually ANY issue, they have struck at the very core of congress' oversight responsibility. The only reason they have gotten away with it thus far, is because the broader issue has not yet made it into the high court. Rove will be answering questions. Whether in the near future, or a year from now. And the fur will fly when he is shown to be the criminal scum that everybody already knows he is.
I agree with you virtually completely.
I definitely resent and hold Rove responsible for the 51% startegy, the intrinsic divisiveness of it (I cut Pelosi no slack here on blatant partisanship, but she has not infected the electoral process like Rove has), and the pandering to the ultra right to the point that it has led them to believe that vehemence should, and unfortunately does, give them controlling influence over the party, or lead them to expect it. That is before we get to the cancerous approach of systematized lies, hate, smears and innuendo as the fundamental campaign approach of the party.
Based on the info available to date, it also appears that Rove may be a criminal too. If he is, then I want him to fry. Not only for what he has done, but also for the theraputic value for the party.
People like you two just reassure the idiocricy of America. The real question is why are we still spending tax payers money so that some congressional commitee can continue this witch hunt? Like it or not it is the right of the president to hire and fire US Attorneys as he/she see's fit to do so. If they want to continue this then I think they should call up Bill Clinton because he fired all but 3 when he was elected. The last thing we need right now is more wastefull spending by government and this my fellow Americans is a waste!!
My, my where were you when the Starr chamber was in session? We're spending tax payer money on it because justice should be served. If we are a society of law, that's necessary. Now I agree that the firing of US attorney's is a long way from the most pressing issue about the Bush WH. His secret NSA surveillance plans, his manufactured lies to get authorization to go into Iraq, his activities with lobbyists like Abramhoff, his twisting of the Constitution every which way but loose, his signing statements that basically directed executive departments not to enforce the laws passed by Congress, these and more are all more pressing issues than the US attorney firings. It just happens that the US attorney investigation was still open from the previous Congress, so it got attention right away. Have no fear, all you Bushie suck ups, Congress will get to the other issues in due time, and then we will see what legacy Bush has.
No kidding... The people that support Bush have no shame and do not value integrity and accountability as far as i can see. They act just like Bush, screw up, make excuses, even if some have to die and this country is an embarassment, they support this, because they are blinded by the same.
It is not a Witch hunt, it is about "integrity" and the values of our institution. Which hunt is used as a distraction by partisans. This is about Integrity! Those that fail the test should be held accountable. They were trusted and need to answer not to Conyers, but to any in this country that want some questions answered.
If you understand values and integrity you would understand what I am saying...
Really?? What a waste of tax payers money. I would think there are more pressing matters that need to be addressed other than the firing of US attorneys. It is at the sole discretion of the Prsident to hire and fire the attorneys as they see fit, Bill Clinton fired all but 3 during his time, where is the witch hunt there? It's time for Bush haters and petty little people such as the 2 that posted here to get on with their lives and for congress to get to work on the issues that help move America forward, which is what we are paying them for.
We don't just move on with criminals in our midst. We are not going to just move forward and forget to hold those accountable to the values they swrore to protect. Sorry, it is not going to work like that. Rove will not be let off the hook unitl he answers.
Protecting the alues and integrity in our systems of government, especilally the Justice department is not petty. nobody goes after Rove becuase he looks funny or Bush becuase he acts stupid. They want some answers, and without that accountability our govenment will fail...
So, nto so god damn simple as "let's just move on".
The deck was being stacked with political loyalists and there was a specific descrimination going on and it was exposed. Rove and company absolutley need to answer some questions. It is about accountabiltym, and quit bringing up Clinton. Who giives a *** about Clinton. Stick with the issue.
Your minimization of the issue is part of the problem here. The department of justice was being corrupted knowingly and those accountable should be held accountable.
This is another example of the lawlessness in America...we impeached a president who refused to leave office and allowed him to do so. We hold contemp for the real truth...if we are going to require former presidents, v.p.'s, etc to hold information confidential, how can we expect them to not pleade the 5th Amendment or use everything they can to stay out of trouble caused by yet another contemptable politician.
Integrity of our institutions is absolutly worth dragging their A$$es in to answer some questions. This is not a simple matter of sex with an intern, or some lie by an idiot president to cover up an affiar. Rove has appeared to be behind a lot, and if he wants to be vindicated he better come forth and answer, not to Conyers, but to conyers on behalf of the people of this country that have values and value truth and integrity.
It is sad when you have a movement, that is posing under a Christian banner, and they support people in government that can do as they please and lie and are not held accountable.
Integrity is important and accountability is paramount. The truth will set us free, but we should have acccess to the truth and not a coverup by more criminal politicians.
I really don't know what your post is trying to say, even after reading it four or five times.... Can you try it again? But just take your time and proof read it before posting.
Bush fires 8 prosecutors, but Clinton fired ALL 93!! Glad to see that there is no bias at all in the American political/judicial system.
If you had been listening you would understand it is about corrupting the justice department, nto firning prosecutors. It is the reason that they were released that uncovered this situation. Open you mind, and quit being a partisan puppet. There is a coverup going on about this, has been for some time, and therer are some that need to be held accountable to re-establish the rule of law and the integrity of those in office.
Idiot Clinton lied to cover up sex, to cover up an affair. Don't compare that to the justice department fiasco, because you minimizing it shows litttle integrity or how little you value the jstice system over politics.
Nothing more than a partisan witch hunt by Conyers! Why hasn???t he subpoenaed Daschle and Geithner for not paying their taxes?
Nothing but a partisan comment...
How about we hold all accountable? Rove needs to answer, he needed to for a long time, and I hope he gets hauled in to be accountable to this country. He does not get of, and his protections are dwindling fast and he and some of the others will not be forgotten and they will not be removed from the radar.
