We need David Kennedy's principles/practices here in southern wv so, so, so, badly! Our state's (WV) way of dealing with the problem is to give the police, detectives, and whoever can collect from the domestic drug program's generous funding to destroy families by elimating any and every bit of their privacy during an investigation, and they proclaim their targets guilty until proven innocent, ruining reputations of PARENTS AND RUINING THE PROSPECT OF THEIR CHILDREN EVER HAVENING A FAIR SHOT IN THEIR COMMUNITY. I'm sorry, but I unfortuniately live in the southern coalfields of WV, where, if you are a target (had major surgery/was prescribed legal pain meds for a long time) your ***!! Your reputation: ***!!, you privacy:YOU DON'T HAVE ANY!! My sons teachers and coaches look at me like I'm radioactive because of the gossipe spread through our small community, WHICH WAS STARTED BY AN UNFOUNDED RUMER, FUELED BY GOSSIP. I 've come to know that if you are accused of stealing a tic tac, after enough gossipe you're guilty of robing the Pope, AND LAW ENFORCEMENT WILL BELIEVE IT!!!. PLEASE BRING YOU SOLUTION TO SOUTHERN WV BEFORE WE BUILD ANY MORE PRISONS AND AND RUIN ANY MORE LIVES!! LIKE ALOT OF PEOPLE WHO MISS PRIVACY, I WISH I CURRENTLY LIVED IN THE 70'S .......THANK YOU

Prof. Kennedy is a blessing to understanding the "criminals" who to my point of view are the "victims" the first time. We deserve a second chance and re-entry works! Especially when we talk about drug dealers, somehow the same notion applies to prostitution or prostitutes as we call "them."

The drug war is a dismal and expensive failure which negates in many cases the Individual rights our nation was founded upon.

  • Posted By: Sblvins1 @ 02/10/2009 11:28:27 PM

This is a man who was able to see beyond the drug-dealer, and into the the futures of individuals who have maybe not been so fortunate or who simply made poor choices for themselves. It's a positivistic approach to a social crime. I say kudos to Mr. Kennedy for his efforts and courage to take a different approach to turning people's lives around. Let's face it, our punitive system is expensive, damaging, and is simply a failure, not a correction institute nor a corrective action to help people turn their lives around. Looks like Mr. Kennedy's approach is more effective!

why does everything has to do with racism. he is not racist and evently most of country is not either cause we elected a black guy for our president. sure he is the first black to be president but only because he is the first black who even tried to run. mr. kennedy is a guy who is just trying to make a difference in this world helping whatever the color you are it don't matter.

I agree that drug dealers are poor. However, most are convicted felons and can not get a job paying enough to support a family. And 10% jus dont care and like the lifestyle they live.

WOW...Instead of actually commending Mr Kennedy for actually making a difference, the comment section is being used to further the racial gaps. Wonderful article....but the comments are lame.

CyndeC. Why all the references to black people? People of ALL races commit these crimes. You are just one lucky person that didnt have to grow up in the ghetto. Leave stuff like this to people with a brain. You obviously have no intelligence to insult.

  • Posted By: jasonhtx713 @ 02/05/2009 1:57:01 PM

WHATS WITH ALL THE BLACK REFERENCES, CYNDEC? YOU PROVE A POINT, BUT MANAGED TO THROW RACISM IN THERE. IT HAPPENS EVERYWHERE AROUND THE WORLD AND ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE ARE GUILTY OF THESE CRIMES. THINK ABOUT IT.

Thank GOD for Mr. Kennedy and his honesty. It's amazing to me how I see young black male faces on the evening news EVERYDAY regarding drug related crimes. HOW on earth do the drugs make it past FEDERAL law enforcement officials covering our SECURE/SAFE borders and end up in the HOOD? How is this possible? WHO pays for the guns these criminals always seem to have??? Are the guns FREE? Where do the guns come from? Where are the black men that can afford private jets to go to Colombia or wherever the drugs come from? I haven't seen any private jets in the hood - have you? Where are the black leaders? Why did it take a white male to want to clean up OUR streets? Can someone - anyone answer my questions without insulting my intelligence???? IF THESE YOUNG BLACK MALES DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO ILLEGAL DRUGS AND GUNS THEY CAN NOT SELL THEM OR USE THEM OR KILL EACH OTHER - CORRECT??? SO WHY IS IT THEY ARE PLENTIFUL IN THE HOOD BUT THE JOBS AND HEALTH CARE ARE NOT PLENTIFUL???

Rramjet - - why stop at the Saudia Arabian method. let's try the Taliban method.. Actually this war on drugs has been going on most of my life. We've built up a nice industry and a mammoth bureaucracy. Have we stopped the drugs?` Do you really think we ever will? How do things look in Mexico right now? And why?, because we outlawed drugs so the drug cartels can develop a business and make a nice profit.
Legalize it! Let the government sell it. Let U.S. farmers grow it. Let U.S. workers package it, quality control it and cut out the profit for the gangsters. Stop supporting questionable regimes in South America. Stop the source of profit for Afghanistan Poppy growers that support the Taliban. If you don???t want to use it, don???t.
I think we have given the war on drugs enough time. Let???s try something different.

      I agree, chobbit nailed it!

Right on CH, the war on drug will never be won. it has become, and is a crooked bowl of politics to keep state jobs, fed, jobs. they know this meaning the gov. the state etc. as I mentioned earlier. they use the drug cartels as way to keep state jobs in the prison system. one case I remember well. A boy who was 17 or 18 got caught with an eight ball or so, that is about a corner of a baggie full of lets say coke, this kid who had straight A's never in trouble before , basically a good kid, lived in Mich. got caught, etc, and was sentenced to LIFE a one time screw up does this kid really, really deserve that for a one time screw up. C' mon everybody has somebody in their family whose fkd up once...................... This kid still sits in prison to my knowledge....

Kudos to Mr. Kennedy, I think this is a wonderful idea that I would love to see imposed in every city across the nation. I do have an opinion on the legalization and taxation of one specific drug, that would be generally a good idea, and put money back into taxpayers' pockets. As to the article and giving those (sometimes forced into their situation) a second chance, this was a source of enlightenment on the drug dealing problem. Thank you Mr. Kennedy, and those PDs willing to try the method!

Supply & demand. When drugs users are seen as loosers, addicts, sick people, patients, and treated like that, there will be a lot of kids NOT choose fo drugs. If hash is legal to get everywhere at limited amount and criminalized, a lot of the secrecy and hence the eagerness of young kids to try it will evaporate aswell.
if young kids would have less pressure in their lives when they are young, you know keep m kids instead of turning them asap in adults,. there will be less need to escape into drugs & alcohol.
Eliminating the source, and hurt some terrorist badly at the same time should have been done ages ago.
Oh and the drugsdealer, well hell find other methods of income, maybe learn a job or start a coffeshop, he is not the problem, he is just a tool.

  • Posted By: rramjet @ 02/03/2009 1:56:46 PM

Liberal Hogwash!! Why not try the Saudia Arabian method and execute them. Death is a great deterrent.

Enter Your CommentRR, when u find out your cousin, mother, father, aunt, uncle, brother, sister, cousin, your best friend, your president, has smoked one, snorted a line, then say that. Given that the so called 'War on Drugs' is a miserable failure and has indeed made the police the 'enemy' to millions ... I believe this gentleman has something important to say. I wish elected officials would begin to listn. Zero Toerance does nothing but fill our jails, cost taxpayers hundreds of billions, and ruin lives. Try something else, at least ... this war on our own nation is insane.

I sooooooooooooo couldn't agree with you more WS, you are right on the money.

I wish him luck, but I have a few reservations. Corner dealers often are users, much of the compensation derived in form of drugs. The years of dismatled corner trade coincide with rapid accent of dispatch, trade by phone. Pappetiers who manage the trade from shadows remain in place. Kid with no record can start anew in another city, or start to move around Golden triangle - Las Vegas - Atlantic CIty - Miami. The useal path of the prostitutes, easy girls(and boys)(specialising in robbery under disguise of prostitution), professional card counters and retail drug dealers...

    • Posted By: kellyRobo @ 02/03/2009 10:47:31 PM

uhmmm, really those who deal it, and especially those who make a lot of money off of it, rarely do they even do it. Most drug dealers don't even touch the crap. proven fact. dealers would lose money if they too snorted it, smoked it etc. research it.

  • Posted By: kellyRobo @ 02/03/2009 10:44:17 PM

I say hooray for him. Some people to change, do see the light and decide I dont'want this any more. Some people have toyed with dope even our oh mighty president, and LOOK where HE is right now. if he can being a second chance I commend him. wake up those of you who don't know, for every drug dealer they put in prison fiftteen more are out there doing the same thing all over again. the war on drugs will never be won, and the war on drugs has never been won. It's all a political game to keep prisons full of jobs, screw those who have never been in trouble before, and just keeps those state jobs going. It is all nothing but a viscious cycle and all political.
    Again Hooray for this man!!!

  • Posted By: kellyRobo @ 02/03/2009 10:39:45 PM

hooooray for him, unless you've been there done that, you won't have a clue.

Drug dealers, the street level people involved, are for the most part doing what is only thing that was ever taught or shown to them on how to acheive what is needed for basic survival; food, clothing and shelter. Until an alternate means is provided, this culture will exist. Most cultures use of drugs is usually ceremonial; but in this country usage is usually
recreational or habitual. The drug culture and its problems start and end with each of use; we all must confront it as
Mr. Kennedy has, and generated solutions with more positive results.
