COVER STORY: AFGHANISTAN

Obama’s Vietnam

The analogy isn't exact. But the war in Afghanistan is starting to look disturbingly familiar.

You know I think this Afghanistan thing has got to be over with, how long do Americans have to keep dying in that godforsaken place. Here???s something I just read???

No this is not Obama's Vietnam. Obama has even surprised me. He is doing an excellent job and has what it takes to achieve our objectives in Afghanistan.

THis is 30 year war. The question how can we fight it with little presence. The answer; By training Afghan special forces. Use drones and special forces and withdraw over 85% of the military presence in Afghanistan by 2012.

THis is a "moving war", a global war. We have to use intellignece and specilal forces in conjuction with drones and spies to track these terrorist all across the globe. The five muslim states that seperated from Russia is where these terrorists will regroup and where the war will continue. These five states Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan will then form an alliance with the Russian underworld and drop a bomb on us. We have to think ahead of the enemy. This information can change human history and prevent a catastorphe if we get our special forces into these five states Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan from now. Let's not wait for the enemy. That is how we will catch Bin Laden.

We have to anticipate where are the 25 most probable place Bin Laden will be in or contact in the future. Start setting up shop and the prey will walk straight in unannounced and we will nab him. i think it is vital that we take Osama bin laden alive, so we can destroy this god like figure to the muslim radicals infront of them. If Osama Bin Laden dies a martyr his teaching will be followed and he will be worshipped as a God. Obama is doing an amazing job as President. Once the American people know what the objective is and when our troops are being pulled out they will support our President. Remember we fought the cold war for decades with millions of people we just did not use troops.

There is a global awareness now on the need to fix the world & how to fix Islam - but darkness prevails on the best method - a solution that is simple and sure will evolve from here. Sounds far fetched & too optimistic ? Consider the peculiar case of 1 million deaths in the Iran Iraq war- this was technically not a Jihad with Kafir and hence all those dead went to HELL for no fault of theirs except that they had Saddam as "boss" - bad leadership brought ruin to followers!

Every one agrees that nuclear attack on entire middle east from either US or Israel canoot be ruled out at all - but not many know that it appears to be very central to planners of Islamic life. As all muslims prey 5 times a day for death in jihad and seat in heaven to bump 72 goats - this is the most practical way for a benevoilent & merciful kafir like our Mr Bush to deliver a heavenly martyrdom in jihad to all muslims on equal footing.... so that at the Allah's brothel - stock of 72 goats/ martyr can be enjoyed equally by each muslim not just a few selected Talibans & Wahabbis..a case of good leadership solving every problem on earth and in heaven!!

Back to Newsweek's (and John Barry's & Evan Thomas')....."Obama's Vietnam" ,originally from February 9th.
You know, the February 9th that occured right after Barack Obama was inaugurated.
How desperate was(and is) Newsweek to sell magazines? Whoever (responsible at Newsweek) decided to
link those two words......"Obama", President for, at that point, just a few weeks...........and........"Vietnam", a war
from the 60s and early 70s, needs to think about these two words instead.......Journalistic Integrity.
Barry and Thomas are actually quoted as saying..........."It's still too early to say exactly what President Obama will do
in Afghanistan." As any young person of today would say........."Duh!". Based on the fact that Obama had been
President for about fifteen minutes, at the time the article was written, I'd like to suggest some different titles(and covers) for Newsweek back then..... "Obama Inherits New Vietnam", or even leave the brand new President's name out of it....
"Afghanistan,The Next Vietnam?" But in their effort to sell magazines, Newsweek just couldn't resist, could they?
I can understand (not really) why the Washington Times' Jeffrey Kuhner wrote his article (even before the Newsweek
piece!),on Jan. 25th ,and linked Obama's name to Vietnam, too. At least we know the Washington Times (and Kuhner)has its'
Republican agenda and they were smarting from their recent defeat. And of course, it is my belief that they know as much about "Journalistic and Broadcasting Integrity" as Rush Limbaugh or Bill O'Reilly, but I digress.
I wish that Newsweek, and every other publication, newspaper, and tv network would use a bit of thought, before
labelling.... stories, covers of magazines, sound bites, etc. in their efforts to SELL. Have some Integrity!

This article, along with the analogy it provides, eloquently sums up the atrocious job that America is doing in Afghanistan. The Defense Secretary is correct in saying that we need to be careful about the goals we set for ourselves.
Obama???s decision to attempt to solve the problem or stop the causalities while he figures a plan by installing an additional 17,000 troops is unwise. The new installation of troops demonstrates that he is completely unaware of the true nature of the problem in Afghanistan. We have installed a corrupt government in place a terrorist power.
The author of the article, Barry, sums up the problem by drawing parallels between Afghanistan and Vietnam. He suggests that the place that Karzai???s government holds in Afghanistan is similar to the place that Diem had in Vietnam. Both are American-backed governments that came as a short-term solution to larger violence.
Obama???s decision to increase the number of boots on the ground proves that he is unaware of the fact that Afghanistan cannot be mended by any more short-term solutions. A new government has not provided stability to what the natives deem a ???collection of tribes.??? Obama must also realize that additional troops will not stabilize the state either.
Instead, like another commenter of this article claims, Obama must work to slowly build a more stable Afghanistan from the ground up. Only in this manner will America acquire the support of the Afghans. Unfortunately, installing more troops is doing the opposite of what I believe is required in Afghanistan. Turning the ???collection of tribes??? into a military state will make Afghans unsympathetic to our cause and it will only bring America further from solving the problem in Afghanistan.

Obama could be the most successful President ever for the USA. A brilliant and sincere politician. Rare anywhere in this fouled up world. But Afghanistan could be his downfall. Pray it never may happen!

When will this country learn from History??? We never seem to look into the past records and keep trying to reinvent the wheel. Russia threw all its' military know how for close to 9 years doing battle in Afghanistan. We kept things hot, by providing military equipment to the opposition. Now we have replaced Russia in the interests of fighting terrorism. What makes us think that Russia will not return the favor and keep the war hot for us for many years and with the same results?? We should get out of that entire area, save billions of dollars and spend the money on our home front building up our own defenses. Why do we keep throwing away precious lives and money that can benefit us here at home. We have our own terror to fight here in the U.S. It is known as hunger, homeless people and sick people who are forgotten by our government. They need direct assistance, not "protection" from an enemy 1000s of miles away. Wake up Congress and do some common sense repairs and stop the in house fighting!!!

Why are we in Afghanistan? Perhaps we could find new solutions to our real concern. Terrorism is the real issue or is it pipelines? Whatever we do, let us be smart about it.

Meanwhile, "Sen. Dianne Feinstein's blurt during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing last week forced the U.S. intelligence and military community to acknowledge on Thursday that the U.S. is targeting Al Qaeda and Taliban operatives using unmanned drones based in Pakistan.

The acknowledgement that the Pakistanis not only are turning a blind eye to U.S. operations in their territory, but also are lending a hand by supplying a staging area could create political problems for the fragile government of President Asif Ali Zardari. The Pakistanis themselves are still officially denying the arrangement, a decision predicated on the weak federal government and extreme anti-Americanism in tribal communities, particularly the Federally Administered Tribal Area in the Northwest, where Taliban and Al Qaeda support is strongest."

Scooter Libby was convicted in a witch hunt for not remembering what day he might have talked about a third rate CIA agent who wasn???t active and was peripheral to the matter at hand. Here, we know who the leaker is, and it is on a matter critical to our operations in Afghanistan and to the stability of our ally. Dianne Feinstein should be thrown out of the Senate immediately and prosecuted for revealing classified information to the public and endangering our troops.

What the Paks pulled today cannot be of any comfort to Obama, who is already registering his displeasure. A few things first.

We have already discussed Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinsteins [Ca. Senate Intel Committee] blowing the lid off of a covert CIA/PAK PREDATOR operation in that country. While defenders pointed out that a story adanced by the WaPo earlier in the week had made the same claim,it was not, until Friday, given credence by a major government official who has access to classified and covert [as this program was], information. Her stupidity [ observe that we do not use the much overused word ''treason''here, which is nominally the province of the winger deranged], has produced two ends. One that can be linked, and another that can be only suspected of relation.
An American UN aid worker on Sunday was snatched off of a Pak street and is now being held by what appears to be al Qaeda or Taliban operating in Pakistan . He will probably meet the same fate as a Polish aid worker beheaded last week. Next, the Pak government has revealed a hastily drawn up plan that creates a ''sultanate'' in the region of Swat[Northwestern Pakistan] that can now be ruled by Sharia Law that would include Taliban an/or al Qaeda leadership. In effect,a nation within a nation.
How this will go down in CIA ,Pentagon and WH is unknown except for the grumbling already eminating from all of these quarters. How do you feel now Feinstein? Better? Or worse....?

Having lived in Pakistan and worked with Afghans, this is a extremely excellent summary of the problems in Afghanistan. Democracy (or some form of structured government) MUST be built from the bottom up (at village and tribal level) and not imposed from Kabul down. It is simply not the Afghan way and they will resist such effort at centralized control, no matter who the central authority is. Afghan power and politics is regional, not national.

New subject: NATO has no business being in Afghanistan. Their presence there is not only an impediment to U.S. progress there, but outside of the NATO charter. The NATO forces and governments are pusillanimous and unsteady allies at best. They are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

    Thank you.

When we want to make change, though positive in its pure essence we must come to know precisely wether they also agree at those " changes" or at lease agree the true meaninig of those changes whom you consider. From the early days, so far as i understand, the Afghan didnot accept the US invasion. How it is possible that a war can be win without the support of its civilians especially in the case of Afghanistan?
US must clear its objectives, obtainable objectives. This war has left worst consquences for the rest of the world.

Intricacies in Afghanistan? Oh yes! The old Soviet Union entered Afghanistan a super power; absolved themselves by exiting some 10 years later. I think after a decade, they fully understood the reality of 'intricacies' and 'not winning the war'.

Calling someone a whore in any language is considered "harassment" I should imagine. Especially when mangling the language that badly. One way or another, you don't know your Italian either, Queen.

You do know your drama, I'll give you that.

    aloha!

    • Posted By: 40YearR @ 02/09/2009 12:45:01 AM

And in that imagination, you are a victim, right?

      • Posted By: Mark Thieme @ 02/09/2009 1:08:32 AM

By any chance did you read Callejero's comments to me? And what i have been called here! Not very inventive, but you could make a harassment case from a variety of perspectives I should think. This is a dirty place on the Web and it is just a little infamous for that fact.

My purpose has been to call all of you out on some shabby blogging ethics. While this started as my own little project, this particular thread has been monitored for the last few days.

Pia merely stepped in front of it. She has never been a target of any investigation (until perhaps tonight), nor have you for that matter. Can't say so much for the others. She does seem to enjoy center stage. And you are right, of course, better to have have ignored her.

Anyhow, I really am going to bed now and you won't hear from me with this name again. Soon I will be history for you all, but Pia's "putana" may haunt her. Hope not.

Must say, for the record, you are a pretty nice chap and the one person here with a point of view and the ability to present yourself well in writing. For me, I have enjoyed your company over the past week, though not so much tonight. Understandable on both our parts.

        Good-night

Wow, you are such the victim of everything.

I find it interesting that you don't have the gonads to post again under this name. That makes you a total wuss, in my book.

I thought you were a pretty good chap until you got weird.

          How soon is "soon"?

Harley - classic leftist swerve #2 - "3,000 were killed on Bush's watch". Hmmm...
So Harley, were the nearly 3000 killed at Pearl Harbor FDR's fault?
When the Southern states formed the Confederacy resulting in the civil war, was it Lincoln's fault?
Was the outbreak of WWI the fault of Woodrow Wilson?

Just curious, you poor twisted man.

  • Posted By: jimbo3800 @ 02/10/2009 7:21:57 PM

I've been away for a couple of days; just got caught up and all I can say is "wow". This is a new low, even for Harley. Maybe this qualifies as abuse? Maybe it is time this ranting, raving, irrational, and deeply profane man gets kicked right out of here.
