We're better at creating enemies in Afghanistan than friends. Here's how to fix that—and the war, too.

Cant agree Concerned Canadian. A true muslim is not supposed to a danger to any body. But only in case of defence to himself, his property or his country depend. Terrorist has no religion nor country. A terrorist is a terrorist. Do you call terrrist in other countries with the religion she or he follows? Why should it be any different in the case of muslims? Had Islam practiced terrorism could it be embraced by people all over the world? Did you have a chance to watch the Hajj on the televsion? Have you observed how more than three million people congregate clad in two pieces of white clothes/ That signifies irrespective of social position one holds, everyone are equal before Allah and there is no trouble what so ever there. That is supposed to be the life style of a muslim, not the one what is being depicted in the media. It is a pity we are worth of the great religion Islam. If all the muslims would have followed Islam as prescribed in our holy book and taught by our Holy Prophet the Islamic world would have been an example for everyone particularly to Concerned Canadian.

By the way these days traslation of Holy Quran is available everywhere. May I request Concerned Canadian to go through it and find out if there is any reference of terrorism there?

The Haj rituals of " two pieces of white cloth" are the immitation of the vedic rituals longh seen in India in many many holy places like Banares & Haridwar on the holy Ganges. It is clearly a religion of nepotism.

There is a global awareness now on the need to fix the world & how to fix Islam - but darkness prevails on the best method - a solution that is simple and sure will evolve from here. Sounds far fetched & too optimistic ? Consider the peculiar case of 1 million deaths in the Iran Iraq war- this was technically not a Jihad with Kafir and hence all those dead went to HELL for no fault of theirs except that they had Saddam as "boss" - bad leadership brought ruin to followers!

Every one agrees that nuclear attack on entire middle east from either US or Israel canoot be ruled out at all - but not many know that it appears to be very central to planners of Islamic life. As all muslims prey 5 times a day for death in jihad and seat in heaven to bump 72 goats - this is the most practical way for a benevoilent & merciful kafir like our Mr Bush to deliver a heavenly martyrdom in jihad to all muslims on equal footing.... so that at the Allah's brothel - stock of 72 goats/ martyr can be enjoyed equally by each muslim not just a few selected Talibans & Wahabbis..a case of good leadership solving every problem on earth and in heaven!!

Pak military and its proxies like Taliban will not be cooperative unless they are made to understand what they will progressively loose by not cooperating, NOT what they will gain by cooperating. We have tried the latter over last 8 odd years. Return of NWFP , Baluchistan and FATA to Afghanistan must be put on the table, it will provide the leverage US needs . It will either shock pak into compliance or Afghanistan gets access to Arabian Sea. Either outcome is pretty good. Bottom line for Pak is if they cannot control their own country they do NOT deserve to keep it in the current format. It will be rearranged. So smaller nation states that are created in the process will opt for peace .

Zakaria's whole argument is based on the flawed premise that most radical Islamists are concerned only with petty local issues and not global jihad. They have to be concerned with those issues in any case, but the gaze of many is beyond the horizon and those of the remaining will quickly shift there too, when the conditions are right.

The myopic solution that he is suggesting may get American troops out of Afghanistan. But it will take jihadist violence and the tide of radical Islam into a different orbit altogether, to deal with which will be many times more difficult and bloody. http://vinodksharma.blogspot.com/2009/03/zakarias-afghanistan-strategy-salvage.html

US shouldfirst renounce its Imperisalistic designs. US support to undemocratic regimes in Muslim countries has caused the creation of Al Qaeda like groups besides its unjust israeli policy. Some of the suggestions given in your article are nice which should be followed by US administration to win the hearts of the people in Afghanistan. However, US should also think over as to why US-hate is increasing day by day among people. Why people blame the US policies for their internal problems? Why the mass of Muslim countries become suspicious of her rulers when they close themselves with US? America should revert to its ideals. Who on earth does not like freedom, democracy and liberty. Is America really sincere in promoting these ideals? If so, it should change its policies, and the world shall turn to it not out of fear but with respect and friendliness.

America should first renounce its Imperialistic designs and should promote democratic groups in Muslim countries. Al Qaida is product of repression in Muslim countries and US support to such regimes besides its Israeli policies. US may succeed at one point of time in Afghanistan or Pakistan in eradicating Al Qaeda like groups but cannot diminish People's hate against US Imperialism. US should introspect and should come forward with the ideals of democracy, liberty, freedom and cooperation.

Meanwhile., "Sen. Dianne Feinstein's blurt during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing last week forced the U.S. intelligence and military community to acknowledge on Thursday that the U.S. is targeting Al Qaeda and Taliban operatives using unmanned drones based in Pakistan.

The acknowledgement that the Pakistanis not only are turning a blind eye to U.S. operations in their territory, but also are lending a hand by supplying a staging area could create political problems for the fragile government of President Asif Ali Zardari. The Pakistanis themselves are still officially denying the arrangement, a decision predicated on the weak federal government and extreme anti-Americanism in tribal communities, particularly the Federally Administered Tribal Area in the Northwest, where Taliban and Al Qaeda support is strongest."

Scooter Libby was convicted in a witch hunt for not remembering what day he might have talked about a third rate CIA agent who wasn???t active and was peripheral to the matter at hand. Here, we know who the leaker is, and it is on a matter critical to our operations in Afghanistan and to the stability of our ally. Dianne Feinstein should be thrown out of the Senate immediately and prosecuted for revealing classified information to the public and endangering our troops.

Fareed: Please don't act like you are suffering from the same kind of amnesia that has afflicted the mainstrem US media
since the departure of Russians from Afghanistan. The media has deleted an entire decade from the recent world
history. Let me refresh your memory: Pakistan, Afghanistan, and US(and the rest of the so called "free world") were
comrades in arms during the last, and the decisive battle in the cold war. Pakistan and Afghanistan WON the cold
war for the so called "free world." They deserved a pat on the back for a job well done, not punishment and retribution.
There were no extremists( or certinly no armed extremists) in Pakistan, until they were recruited by CIA from 40 different countries and bused infor a holy
Jihad against Siviet Union that have benefitted the entire Western world, and even India. Have you not noticed that
Pakistani military, police, and the para-military themselves have been attacked by the extremists. And the random
drone attacks are only aggravating the situation. Americans need to sit down with the Pakistanis and hammer out
a sensible, rational, and workable strategy, i.e., if we really want to resolve this problem. But I suspect that some
elements only want to create more mayhem and trouble for Pakistan, so they can declare this country a failed
state and find an excuse to go in and take out its nulcear weapons.

"India should respond with concessions to ease regional tensions"

Is that a nice way of bringing in the Ahmed Rashid theory of "solve Kashmir and you solve Pakistan"? This really translates to "solve Kashmir the way Pakistan wants is solved" and It is still untrue. Solve Kashmir and you only whet the appetite of the Jihadists to go on to the next stage

    • Posted By: awaz @ 02/17/2009 10:31:12 PM

Forget about Pakistan. Why don't you agree to have an impartial referenum in Kashmir, supervised by international
observers, and UNO? Let Kashmiris decide their own fate. You claim that you are a democracy, then why are you
keeping the people of Kashmir under the boot of your military?

proliferating nuclear scientist who lives in Pakistan. (And are laboring under the assumption that the nuclear scientists of other nationalities are are harmless, gentle creatures.) Oh, by the way, the canard about IQ Khan was
atually started by a Pakistani who is probably fond of practical jokes.

the most important role is played by iran who has two faces in the matter of afghanstan one is visible against taliban and al qaeda and another is hidden which gives all the support and aid to fight the americans and bring them on their knees to accept iran as a regional power and allow it to be a nuclear force . all the weapons and aid is coming in a secret way through iran and there will not be and success until the entire west knows that iran is dealing with the west wih tow faces

I wonder if it is possible to win, whatever that is, in Afghanistan. I do know that I weep for the women and children, particularly the girls, who were left by the Pakistanis to the barbrous dictates of the fundamentalist talibarnis. I wonder if we in this world can ever get past the barbarism of fundamentalist religions.

if you look at the history of Western colonial powers, they always had some complicated ignorant ???experts??? whose knowledge were limited to a few books they had read about a specific colonized territory, and their job was to create a cloud of complex ignorance at home.
First of all, what are the common interests of Afghan Villagers and the U.S?
Why they should support the forces that brought only destruction, and blood for them in the last seven years?
What do you mean by supporting the local leaders and tribal elders?
Don???t you know that the U.S has been doing that in Afghanistan for more than thirty years? Are you kidding? CIA has been dealing with every warlords and tribal leaders separately, providing them cash, weapons and even Viagra .
Every steps of the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan has known to the CIA and MI6 for years, and a majority of those tribal leaders have been on CIA???s payroll for years. How come some black minded, made in U.S and its Arab allies, can hide there for years?

US invaded Iraq, destroyed this Nation socially, cxulturally, economically & left so lasting effect that it required long time to relaized about the loss and destruction. Now it is realized that it was a big mistake.
Attacked Afghanistan that is the declared poorest country at our Planet, use almost each and every sort of destructed weapons, Toora Boora, killa Jangi are examples before the world, here too left " examples" , I think it is very necessary to understand precisely that what these 02 long wars has left effects at the globe, economically. politically and socially. without biases study groups make precise study and predict clearly about the face of the planet especially the east in future.

fareed at the end of the day they are still invaders from the afghan perspective and why should the afghans tolerate foreign troops in their land .
i think you are being very simplistic and there is more to it then being an accidental guerilla -
these societies in iraq and afghans pledge to blood feuds for centuries and you think they can be changed because petraeus an israeli lover has been sent to charm them
it is actually hilarious and i am surprised at the naive attitudes towards a region which is of common interest to all the 3 superpowers -will they ever let one have a decisive control in the region

when east pakistan fell in 71 -india could have over run the rest of pakistan but it was not possible because it was unacceptable to china ,
superpowers are all rather predarory and safeguard their own interests -an american afghanistan or iraq is not in chinese or russian interest -
i hope you agree with that simple truth

A true muslim is *not* supposed to be a danger. Granted. I assume there are no true muslims. If there are 'so called' muslims, guess what-You have trouble. You need examples? You created 9/11? Who is in Darfur? Who is in Lebanon? Who is involved in Iran/Iraq war? Who is behind bombing in London, Bali, Mumbai, Delhi? Who attacked Indian parliament? Who is fighting in Chechnya? Why we do not see this kind of problem with other religions so universal? Also, in Islam, muslims vow their allegiance to Allah, then to the country. to them, their religion is fore most followed by duty to nation. Per them, any non muslim is Kafir and Kafir are not even worthy living. So much for f*cking brotherhood. Quran or Sword. Thats how Islam spread. If not for the crusades, Europe woould still have been a barbarian place. What can we expect when the so called Prophet marries 9 year old girl and fatwas one can marry his own sisters, aunts, as long as they did not share same womb?

you talk about Quran. Why dont you talk about Shariat? Is that not the law by which all muslims suppose to abide by? Lets about it and its disgraceful inhuman values and stone age crap it is filled with

It is difficult to harm friends, enemies another thing. Let's convert all Afghans into enemies, and then evaporate them.
