This woman has been transformed into a beautiful butterfly! Many thanks to many caring individuals but most of all to God, the giver of life and all good things. She will forever be known to me as The Butterfly.

How could you say most thanks go to "God"?? Are you really that easily led to congratulate some non-entity that might as well be a pink unicorn instead of congratulating the MEDICAL DOCTORS who helped this woman?! I'm personally insulted by your comment. What sad ideologues we have to live with in this society.

        Exuse me ace6034
as a believer in God I am personally insulted when you refer to God as something as rediculus as a pink unicorn.
And although you conisder God to be a non-entity there are whole religions and groups of people that follow and beleive in this God and would see that description unfit. And although it is not correct to state that it is God who gave them the knowledge it would not be wrong to thank God for this great success and miracle.
What kind of a society do YOU live in, in which you refuse to accept the beliefs of other people and choose to be closed minded positng forms of blaspheme on sites such as this.

I am not particularly religious or even claim any religion to be mine but don't people get to believe what they want? I mean if someone wants to thank God for what has happened is that not their right to do so? What do you care?

        Get over it, sir.

Thanks extended to topper, for the kind thoughts, and to the surgeons for their fine handiwork. :)

Wow can you imagine having a new face? One that doesn't fit you? I am sure she is grateful for the donation but what a nightmare. I hope her husband who shot her in the face is getting some consequences.

Hmmmm, you claim to be a god fearing person and you say that I'm bantering like a mule? What a terrible thing to say. You people call yourselves Christians and you supposedly go by the book of some god, but I have found that many of you are the rudest, most hateful people on earth. I love everyone no matter what their faith or their beliefs and would never say that what you happened to be blogging today is bantering like a mule. I hope the universe brings you much love and that you find peace in your life.

Free will allows you to have your belief system, you may want to practice three words..Ooooops! OhOh! and OH NO! To deny Jesus Christ before man he will deny you before his father. Thats when these three words will come to mind. your belief is stronger than impression and less strong than positive knowledge. You form your belief by denying to read and study the words of GOD. I challenge you to prepare a legal defense against Jesus Christ. prepare the case as you would to present it to a court of law. If you just want to banter like a mule that is your FREE WILL and it is mine to pray for you. To stand on a belief it is best to have all of the facts. May GOD BLESS YOU

Free will allows you to believe in anything you want. You may want to practice these three words: Oooops! ohoh! and OH NO! If you are an educated individual and failed to read and understand your environment to included GODS WORD you are a fool. To beleave and accept Jesus Christ into your heart and your life the worst that could happen is you lived a good life and thats it. To deny Jesus Christ before man and have him deny you before his father and spend eternity in HELL! I challenge you to prepare a legal case against Jesus Christ to prove to yourself that God did not send his Son to this earth to died for our sins. If your going to form an opinon, a belief stronger than impression and less strong than positive knowledge. watch which soap box you stand on, it might be on FIRE!.

I think people can believe in whatever they want as long as it doesn't harm others....I personally do not believe in a god or heaven...I leave that for children. I am glad that I live in a society that allows me to refuse to accept beliefs of others and that I can think and believe in any way I want and that includes blogging anywhere I see fit and what I feel is appropriate. In this case I see that the humans in this particular medical field of research are brilliant and all praise should be showered on them and not some invisable being that belongs in fairy tale books.

This poor woman can once again look and feel normal again. I tend to be vain about my looks and this puts everything in perspective for me. I will never again worry about that little unexpected blemish.

Geee...i kind of messed the spelling...should have read again...oh well i guess message was clear :)

Wow when she gets the trim she will look amazing!!! This woman must feel an amazing relief after losing her face. I honestly believe that doctors have done a marvelouse job here. It brings a sense of security...knowing that there are ppl out there making these kinds of efforts...simply amazing.

It looks like starting over again is always exciting for medical students and doctors....This article celebrates the progress we have achieved at our own hard work to improve and suply hummans with other chioices...rather than settling for dissability or even death. And as we climp throught he crooked stairs of perfection we find ourselves transplanting the pain into ourselves of those we intend to hellp...efforts have been conciously made to aleviate the phisical pain as well as the feelings undelying the sikn deep into the soul...thus many things will go amiss, this worlds needs to heal more of its spirit than the flesh that entwines with it...

I am going to be put on the organ transplant list as soon as April of this year. I was really interested in hearing what terrible side effects there were. I did not see anything listed. I did enjoy the historical pics thiough.

My sister had a kidney transplant in 1985 with another sister donating. They weren't twins but a 99.7% match. Back then she was told it would last for ten years. She has been taking immunosupression drugs for 24 years. Side effects for her have been anal cancer, heart attack and skin cancer. She never complains because she has squeezed out 14 extra years then what she was originally told. Another gal I know has had 2 kidney transplants and she hasn't had any hair for many years.

  • Posted By: ksmerrell @ 02/19/2009 1:48:40 PM

My son recieved one of my kidneys when he was 18 months old. He has never taken steroids for his immunosupression. I really don't know what terrible side effects they are talking about. I do know recipients that have had side effects but with proper medication they are minimal. I suggest more information should be given before such a broad statement be made. I do applaud you for the Information on the history of tranplants. How about a story telling the success stories of transplantion.

I am interested in learning about the "horrible side effects" of anti-rejection drugs mentioned in the lead-in paragraph. Where do I go to get that info?

  • Posted By: dsberman @ 02/17/2009 11:48:53 AM

The world's first heart transplant was performed on my grandfather's brother Louis Washkansky on 4 December 1967, and not in 1968 as stated in caption accompanying the photograph.
