Agreeing with the other comments. The Color Purple is the biggest snub in history. Looks like it got snubbed again by Newsweek.

These are your idea of Oscar's top snubs? Sorry, but these are pretty pathetic. Where's Spielberg for The Color Purple, the biggest snub in Oscar history? For that matter, where's The Dark Knight? This is why Time magazine wipes the floor with you.

In 1997 Best Actor winner should have been Robert Duvall for The Apostle, over that piece of dreck that Nicholson was in, AND over Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting. But Hollywood doesn't like Duvall. He was absolutely fabulous in that film, as was Miranda Richardson, but nobody saw it.

What I find seriously disturbing is the fact the poster of this arcticle is such an idiot that they mispelled KATHARINE Hepburn. Not once, but twice. She is only one of the greatest actresses in movie history as well as one of the top nominees and winners for Best Actress at the Academy Awards! Where axactly does research and editing come in to play here?? Give me a break...it's spelled correctly on the movie POSTER that is next to the commentary!

How could "The Color Purple" be left off the list!!!!???? And especially Stephen Spielberg as Best Director for how he transformed virtual "no-name" performers into such stellar performances? This has got to be the Snub of all Snubs! Look at the list: Whoopi Goleberg, Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover and even Quincy Jones for the movie's score. Somebody need to re-evaluate the method of snubbing:(

How could the "Color Purple" be left off the list??? Stephen Spielberg was lauded over ET more than what he was able to do with virtual "no name" talent. Look at the list: Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover, etc. Snubbing that movie, cast and director at that time was horrible but to think that now the Snub of the Snubs don't recognize that atrocity is really rubbing alcohol-laded sand in an open wound!

There are many more Oscar "snubs" that were far greater than the ones cited in the article. Personally, the fact that Steve McQueen was not nominated for his great performance as Bullitt is one of the biggest snubs. While nominated, he didn't win the Oscar for his work in The Sand Pebbles, which, in my opinion, was probably one of the best dramatic performances by an actor in the 20th Century. I suspect that Steve's lifestyle and Hollywood politics took its toll on his chances to win more critical aclaim. However, being Mr. Cool, he probably could have cared less.

Do you really think that Clint Eastwood, who has won Oscars for directing and producing, loses sleep because his acting hasn't been recognized, especially, as the often snubbed and older actor Peter O'Toole put it, he's "still in the game?" Oscars are not historical mileposts. They are a snapshot of an era. Thus, a film like "Sergeant York" was every bit as important to the lost generation as "Saving Private Ryan" is to us. The sad irony that Judy Garland didn't get nominated for "The Wizard of Oz" is overshaddowed by her non-wins for "A Star is Born" and "Judgement at Nuremberg." By the way, Olivia de Haviland won her Oscar for "The Heiress" and not for "To Each His Own." Perhaps if your author were more versed in film, he might not be so bitter about some of his 'snubs.'

Thanks for the memory. I saw Sergeant York when it first came out. Never forget how he licked his thumb and then wiped the spit on the front sight of his rifle to make it shine so that he could draw a fine bead. My friends and I all had BB guns then and we emulated Gary Cooper's sight trick, licking our thumb and rubbing the front sight. Didn't really improve our accuracy, but the point was to be like the war hero. So it goes.

just proves how out of touch the industry is with the real people in this county. If the academy like it, I know I will just hate it, and I don't spend my money to see it.

      Great comment I agree!!

Val Kilmer in "Tombstone" is #1 on my list... Patrick McGoohan in "Braveheart " = #2 injustice

Val Kilmer... should have at least gotten a nom.... never tire of watching this flick.

Badass Lonshanks: the bad boy we loved to hate. We're on the same page.

#1 = Val Kilmer in "Tombstone"
#2 = Patrick McGoohan in "Braveheart".. he was a mean s.o.b. as Longshanks!!!

How can you have a feature like this and not mention the 1989 snub of "Do the Right Thing" (in favor of "Driving Miss Daisy", no less)? To say nothing of Denzel Washington's Malcolm X losing to Al Pacino's phone-in job for 'Scent of a Woman"...? And forget Leonardo DiCaprio in "Titanic" - the real snub is "Titanic" winning best picture over "Good Will Hunting". Hello, Newsweek?

The Truman Show compared to Life is Beautiful? Really?. I think the author was running out of ideas and started picking movies randomly

Another great injustice is that Peter O'Toole never won a best actor Oscar (despite Lawrence of Arabia, and many, many, many more brilliant performances). He is one of the greatest actors of our time. Another win I can never understand is Jack Nicholson...don't remember the name of the movie , with Helen Hunt...he just acted like an over grown baby...and this was the same year that Robert Duvall gave a stunning performance as 'Stalin', and should have won hands down!!

    The fact that
Marilyn Monroe wasn't nominated for "Some Like It Hot" was a travesty, as was Bette Davis not winning for 'All About Eve" and Barbra Streisand for "The Way We Were."

I agree with comment about the songs from Saturday Night Fever, but if we're going to include non-acting snubs, the greatest Academy snub of all time has to be Alfred Hitchcock never winning (and rarely nominated for) Best Director.

How about Joseph Cotten? He gave wonderful performances in some of the best movies ever made - Citizen Cane, The Magnificent Ambersons, Shadow of a Doubt, and The Third Man - and never received a single nomination!

Points of contention - I think Frances McDormand deserved that Oscar over Madonna and Titanic's box office gross does not eclipse Jack Nicholson's performance in "As Good As It Gets".

Observation- Known for it's history of "We're sorry" oscars, though Rod Steiger's performance in "In The Heat of The Night" was great, his performance in Sydney Lumet's "The Pawn Broker" was truly epic. But the oscar that year went to Lee Marvin for "Cat Ballou". Frankly, I'm amazed this snub didn't make the list. Many agree that the oscar for "In The Heat Of The Night" was a so-called "consolation oscar".
