What are you thinking with a red headline like this! Are you trying to kill the stimulus bill? Bad timing or bad judgement, I am not sure but I am disappointed as a long time Newsweek reader.... Tom

Bush should be prosicuted for crimes against humanity. The last time a leader did what he did and lied to his people while he did it, was WWII, and his name was Hitler.
As far as the right wing notion of; "Hurray for me and screw everyone else," your time is done, get over it. Leave it to us to (once again) clean up the mess of a failed right wing nutjob.
This has nothing to do with the article. Get a life.
Nancy Pelosi recently remarked that the nation overwhelmingly chose her type of solutions in the last election. We would do well to remember that President Obama won by a margin around 7% to 8% in the popular vote. That is not overwhelming, there are many who do not accept this stimulus package as good because we believe it is fundamentally bad economics. We as a nation need to have the character to weather difficult economic times. And lest you think I'm cold hearted for not considering those being hit by this economy, I've been unemployed since July of 08 & currently have no income. I and my family of four are living off my savings & I don't want Washington to rescue me. I want them to stay out of the way.
Amen! And well put!
Like I posited...
Make the government not-for-profit, stop paying the politicians, and make them all volunteers that rely on other endeavors for their main source of money. Then, the government will stop fluctuating between communism and capitalism, and find the charitism for which our world cries out! People, as individuals, helping people. People, as individuals, helping people help people. Not government. Not a lack of help. Pouring more money into the economy will just make it more worthless, and drive us to a communist state... and we've all seen how that works out. Anyone remember Viet-Nam? My dad does, and it wasn't pretty, from what he tells me.
I like how the authors in the article briefly mentioned "the chronic high unemployment" of Europe. I mean, I understand that high spending is necessary, even tho it does nto feel right. While fifty million dollars to the Arts might seem like a waste, the money will be spent in the economy by artists and it will hopefully provide a little stimuli. However, America will prevail, even if we did nothing.
"Our Judeo Christian values brought us slavery."
A little early to be breaking out the booze, isn't it? Slavery existed before Christ. It existed before Abraham. It has existed in every culture, every tribe, every nation. What, exactly, are you talking about?
Regarding the article itself, it's unfortunately quite true. Remember Michael Dukakis in 1988: "This election isn't about ideology, it's about competence." He may have been a terrible candidate, but his comment was right. Even Reagan was unable to reverse the drift toward socialism. Government got bigger, its rate of growth just slowed, temporarily. W's presidency is proof positive that the ideologcal war against socialism has been lost. Obama won because people believed his administration would manage the social-welfare state better than would McCain's.
What's sad is that America does not have the birthrate necessary to support the socialist state for long. It's a simple question of numbers. Even with all the unchecked immigration, the producer-versus-consumer ratio is dropping. As with Europe, which is even deepeer in the same soup, the number of working people required to prop up the social welfare system is shrinking fast. Tough sledding ahead.
How can Obama create a better society or one more moral as jbz states when he is for abortion which is one of America's biggest sins. Come on people-wake up--American has fallen and will continue to do badly until we go back to our judeo Christian values we were founded on. Bottom line-when God turns his back on this Nation--the Nation falls.
Cults have no business in politics, you need to wake up a little yourself. Religeous fanaticism is what knocked the towers down, starts wars and gets people killed continiously. You right wingers talk about anti-choice, but dont want to part with a dime for all the social programs needed for the mothers that need prenatel care and unwanted children that are spilled into the system.
You people that want a religeous regime are living in the wrong country, try the middle east.
Hey, inkblot
Keep your prejudiced, elitist snarky comments to yourself. If you are afraid of rural people that is your problem. Don't treat them like sub-humans. I THINK you consider yourself progressive. There is nothing "progressive in your statrment. If someone posted that list about blacks, it would get flamed immediately. You are worse than no help to progressive causes. You are pure poison. Are you sure you aren't a mole for Rush Limbaugh?
if we are socialists its good for our soul -hope we can get some self respect too because that leads to a better society which obama is trying to inculcate in this morally bankrupt nation
Dear God, the anti-socialist nuts are really out on this one.
Keep blaming the Obama administration, which has been in "power" for, what, three weeks now? - for your own bitter, unhealthy viewpoints and lives if you like.
At least I *tried* to give Bush a chance before watching him slag the country...it occasionally strikes me what a lack of faith the American right has in anything except cruelty, racism, and "capitalism" (read: socialism for the benefit of large, failing, corrupt companies only.)
FDR had "The New Deal"...Barry's got "The Raw Deal"....
NOBAMA!!!
PrezBo and The Demwits LOVE to attack the "Bush Tax Cuts"...George Bush???s tax cuts cost a total of $1.4 trillion dollars over 8 YEARS. Not my opinion, it is a fact. It was excessive GOVT. SPENDING....NOT tax cuts that ballooned the defecit....
The Federal Government, doubled the national debt from $5.7 trillion to $10.6 trillion in EIGHT years. That means the U.S. borrowed more money than it could repay. So...now let me get this straight...the answer is...SPEND MORE $$$ we do not have......Well...y'all asked for it...you've got it....boy this Nation has really dumbed down....
Carter had double-digit unemployment...runaway STAGFLATION....was mocked by mohammedville...and left office as a national joke.....The GOOD OL' DAYS....well they are back....
NOBAMA!!!
Disgusting! The liberal media never ceases to amaze me. I don't want to be like the French...I think we all need to be more American. As everyone just sits around our country is being destroyed...and we can put most of the blame on the media and Americans being stupid enough to believe them. My children will have to suffer for it. THANKS!
I have beenwarning anyone who will listen....Universal Health Care will endanger our most vulnerable....Rationing or treatment and services is THE PLAN,,,,The elderly will be hardest hit....Don't believe me??? Here is the link......

It has failed or is collapsing around the world...and The BarackStar wants to copy a known failure??? Well he is Marxist trained.....by his own admission...
NOBAMA!!!
No dice! I am not and will not be a socialist!
For one thing, I will not take part in national socialist welfare, i.e. Social Security. Most do, but is it required?
This question exposes an underlying dynamic of socialism, that it doesn't work without major portions of fraud included. Most folks will tell you that Social Security participation and enumeration is required by law. But this has never been the case, only by 'color of law' fraudulent assertions and corporate bullying. (I should have said 'underlieing'.) It is just a big Ponzi scheme waiting to collapse.
And it is further used to defraud the public regarding the misapplication of 'income tax law' which specifically targets foreign nationalists and foreign corporations, never the citizens of the various states.
Liar liar, pants on banker's bailout.
Anyone who actually holds truth as a value should be ashamed to continue supporting national socialist welfare schemes!~
'Center-right'? If that means were a statist, proto-totalitarian nation, then yes, I guess we are 'center-right'. Do you prefer the statism of the Mensheviks? Then vote Republicrat. But if you like the other brand of statism, choose the Bolsheviks by voting Demican. One constant remains in American politics: The size, scope and reach of the powerful monolithic "federal" government always increases, whether under Bush the Dimmer, Obama the Anointed One or any other past administration since Woodrow Wilson. I guess the unpopular notion of limited government is overrated as Americans choose partisan politics over liberty every time. So there is hope ---if you think like Lenin or Trotsky.
So President Obama was all over the last administration for doubling the national debt and how he must send it further into debt to save us.
This is nothing new people and he is using the same old argument to cover his tracks.
In 2001 Bush started heavy deficit spending to revive the economy after 9/11 (and fight wars). Some in the Bush admin also blamed the Clinton admin for the bad economy and the lack of security.
Clinton blamed the bad economy for his initially spending spree and detour into nationalizing healthcare. Reagan went into deficit spending to also revive the economy from Carter.
You all are just hearing the same argument again and think it is completely new and righteous because it is coming from your guy.
We ALL really need to look at the spending and tell our fearless leaders that we are done with the excuses and they need to run a fiscally responsible government.
I liked the one about Bill Clinton's end of big government. Almost as accurate as calling the Bush administration "conservative."

Quoting a leftwinged rag that cares little for either ''thought'', much less ''progress'',is an exercise in futility.
As futile, actually,as the idea that this package will magically stop at ''900 billion''which is farcical on its face. Even liberal economic stalwarts such as the ever annoying Jack Krugman writing in Fridays New York Times nevertheless are trying to grasp the enormity of the thing which will easily pass a record into multi-trillion dollar territory well before even the 2010 midterms. ABC asks Obama tonight while he spins the package where the dough thus far spent has gone. He had no ready answer. Make no mistake. This thing is the Mother of All ''Packages''and will dwarf anything Bush ever spent. Hence the willingness of Thomas and Meacham to introduce Americans to embedded socialism that will become a creature of its own, neither ''Swedish'' nor ''French''.
