MY TURN

Stop Me if You’ve Heard This One

Don't underestimate the power of storytelling. It got folks through the Depression. It can work now, too.

Clarification: The books I think the majority of people tend eschew are heavy analytical tomes of bygone eras and what went wrong. The intellectuals and literati appropriately embrace them; but most folks have a down-home working knowledge about how we got here. Now they want encouragement and hope and that pick-me-up that comes from collaboration and community.

The modern day Blog is the equivalent of the storytellers's living room. People aren't going to delve into deep books about history, for the most part. They want to be part of a life that is taking place now. Someone who is also in the trenches. A person who can make them laugh, a good deal of the time, but also brings depth and survival of true hardships. This is why the blog world is exploding. There will be voices which sing out over the others. But folks will come because we need to bind together. It's time to get to know your neighbor even if that neighbor is a city, a state, or a country away. Let me tell you about a time we had bear cubs in our car and they ate all our food.......drop in at Robynn's Ravings. http://www.robynnsravings.blogspot.com/

I think the Marie Haggerty referenced in the article was my grandmother. Besides housekeeping, she also illegally brewed beer during prohibition, and made a homemade cough medicine from roots, barks, and molasses. ANN BANKS if you read this, please let me know how I can find out more about that Marie Haggerty to see if it really was my grandmother..

      Hi,

Some of the names used were pseudonyms. I'll try and check the original cover sheet of this interview. My personal email is annbanks@aol.com, so write me there. I know she was in Massachusetts. Does that help?

Thank you Ann for an insightful and comforting bit of our American history. It is really one of hope and resilience -- we shall survive this crisis too.

Learning from mistakes is the only way to move on which is why we should undestand the factors that cause horrid crisises and try to not redo the same mistakes AGAIN.

When it comes to the economy, Obama is quite simply a liar. Hear him in his own words.

....................................Well, story telling probably was a good thing during the 30s Era and would be positive now also. I would think it would be a great thing if people read books on how life was in America during the 30s and during the War Years because real prosperity did not return for most people until the 50s were here. The War involved our citizens in sacraficing and rationing of many items but Americans had a much greater respect for their fellow citizens and were concerned for each other. America had great melodious music with wonderful bands and musical performers that inspired the Country so that they did not dwell on it that times were very tough.....we today call alot of that music The Great American Song Book and it was quality....not this hip hop trash music with the hateful lyrics that inspires modern youth to go get some body piercing done or some rediculous tattoos put on their body. America has hit the skids both economically and culturally in this era and any National Pride or High Cultural life is not very visible for us to see. It is not all about money, we need to make many other adjustments with American Life!!!!!!

This is soooo sad. I can't believe that I'm possibly witnessing the onset of another depression. Ridiculous. Thanks for eight great years George! Thanks for all those that put him there. Give yourselves a well deserved pat on the back. Oh, and thanks to the GOP. Your party's vision and stellar leadership have brought us to this historical moment. Wow!

I think this is a great piece, a reminder of the resourcefulness--imaginative and otherwise--Americans
    are known for.
