Dear US Forever - you know, there's something I just don't understand about your preoccupation with Putin/Medvedev. Are you this perplexed and outraged about Hosni Mubarak staying in power in Egypt for 25+ continuous years? How about the kings in Saudi Arabia - are you visceraly annoyed that they don't have a civil society because women can't even drive there and have to stomp around in thos disfiguring chadors? How about Pakistan - you know, all those child brides and the deal with the Taliban in the Swat Valley? Oh, and China - repressing protests in Tibet and supressing free speech during the Olympics - outrageous, isn't it? Here';s an ides - let's have them all at Levenworth!! Rah, Rah, Rah!!

But Russia does seem to really get your goat - doesn't it? Why is that? The only people who should be concerned about the Putin/Medvedev duo are the RUSSIAN people - and they don't seem to mind. So who are you to tell them what's good for them or interpose what you believe their democratic choices should be?

"Mubarak staying in power in Egypt for 25+ continuous years..."::You pretend to be a civilized country, you are not there yet, but everything is posible.

      • Posted By: St. Petersburger @ 02/18/2009 6:05:31 AM

Dear bighappy - I totally agree - anything is possible, including the USA giving up it's hegemony over the rest of the world. Then you can sleep safely in your democratic country and we can do the same in ours.

        • Posted By: bighappy @ 02/18/2009 9:10:46 PM

My point was - compare your country with civilized world, not with toalitarian jerks, o rgive up.

          • Posted By: St. Petersburger @ 02/19/2009 3:22:54 AM

My country is the USA - that's the issuer of my passport. Would you care to rephrase your comment?

            • Posted By: USforever @ 02/21/2009 12:49:22 AM

It may have issued your passport..BUT are you an American? With the way you spew Anti-American comments I bet your not a US citizen.

              • Posted By: St. Petersburger @ 02/21/2009 8:53:02 AM

Born in New York City, if you've read this entire blog. Automatically a citizen. And being appropriately critical of the US government's direction and policies is my right - just that good old exercise of freedom of speech.

                • Posted By: Trooper101st @ 03/09/2009 10:19:12 AM

You may have been born here, but ur loyalties lie elsewhere. Stay where you are, f-ing mook.

                  • Posted By: St. Petersburger @ 04/11/2009 5:34:34 AM

How very American of you torrper! I'm delighted to read such erudition. really speaks to your level of general development and evolution. No wonder I live abroad. The Russians are so much more civilized.

  • Posted By: USforever @ 02/19/2009 12:22:24 AM

BTW..Can anyone find out for me how many allied troops have died liberating the USA? I can't seem to find that either. And my point here is.. Even though we would like a trully freely elected democratic government (ie for the people and by the people) for everyone; we know its not going to happen. And YES I know your argument here St Pete ("you ram your money and ideas down everyone's throat to make them be what you want them to be, part of your empire) they really don't have to take US taxpayer money. I think the US can use it to better advantage right now. And yes I know statically our aid isnt as high as some countrys. We all have our problems huh?

    • Posted By: St. Petersburger @ 02/19/2009 3:25:25 AM

And what US goviernment money is it that the Russians have been taking lately? The moneys funding the various NGOs that are bent on destabalizing various Russian regions? More color revolutions?

      • Posted By: St. Petersburger @ 02/19/2009 3:27:47 AM

American aid always has a political purpose behind it. If it didn't the USA would be raining aid packages down on Dafur.

        • Posted By: USforever @ 02/19/2009 10:28:48 PM

I dont see the Russian Federation doing anything at all about Darfar, Gaza, Afganistan, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, India, etc..

          • Posted By: St. Petersburger @ 02/21/2009 8:48:50 AM

But Russia doesn't claim to be the savior of the universe or the champion of liberty and freedom either.

            • Posted By: Trooper101st @ 03/09/2009 10:17:26 AM

              COZ ITS NOT!!! LOL!!!

              • Posted By: St. Petersburger @ 04/11/2009 5:31:44 AM

Good - so we're all agreed.

          • Posted By: Osama Bin Login @ 02/20/2009 2:00:07 PM

Are you suggesting that American aid doesn't always have a political purpose behind it?

            • Posted By: USforever @ 02/21/2009 12:56:16 AM

I hate to say it. But American Foreign aid is wasted money. Washington thinks it can buy friendship and change the reciepents actions/ thoughts/policies from the country it sppoirts with the money. But it oesn't matter, if you give a bully your lunch money, he'll come back for more, and still hate your guts regardless. Interestingly we dont give $ to England or Canada.

              • Posted By: St. Petersburger @ 02/21/2009 8:56:52 AM

So corrrect! Much better to spend that money at home fixing various crises as opposed to pursing expassionist policies and idioic foreign adventures that my tax dollars have to pay for.

                • Posted By: John Dough @ 04/09/2009 8:03:17 PM

Just so you know your man Obama wants to increase aid to Africa tenfold to a bunch of countries that exploit, torture and routinely kill their citizens. GOOD PLAN!!!

                  • Posted By: St. Petersburger @ 04/11/2009 5:31:17 AM

Why jump to conclusions? Obama is not "my man" - I didn't vote for him.

      • Posted By: USforever @ 02/19/2009 10:36:28 PM

I couldnt find figures for 2007/2008 but how about $1,207,600,000 in 2006 . And from 1997 through 2006 - 8,342,900,000 (thats over 8 BILLION) to a very wealthy aggressor that has signed arms, nuclear and energy deals with Iran.

  • Posted By: St. Petersburger @ 02/17/2009 3:27:52 AM

If Putin is a future inmate of Leavenworth - and it's really hard to see how that would happen (since when does the U.S. claim jurisdiction over the whole world as that statement implies and how exactly would one get Putin to Leavenworth (a secret trial at Guantanamo - with waterboarding?) - and which facility - the federal penetentiary or the military prison???) he will doubtless join the likes of such classic icons as G.W. Bush, Mr. Cheney, Mr. Rumsfeld and the indespensible Ms. Rice - who waged not one, but TWO regime change intervetions in Afganistan and Iraq - countries that are extremely close geographically to the United States and were itching for a THIRD (Iran) - wreaking nations and bringing untold misery to millions of foreign citizens - the purposes for which are not yet clear to most of the world and a majority of the people living in the United States - maybe it is to you. Then perhaps Putin can look into GWB's soul and I wonder what he'll see there? I would think it would be something barbaric - maybe like Attila the Hun?

As for my "potty training" - all of which took place in the USA, I might add - the US good - Russia evil conundrum permates all of American culture - shall I start quoting books, films, speeches, songs? Your own "potty training" is starting to show. I'm hoping that the Obama presidency shows greater sense in its dealing with the world and Russia in particular, than the idiotic hubris and paternalism of the last 8 years. Then, maybe three will be an America worth coming back to.

      Actually I meant you

      • Posted By: St. Petersburger @ 02/22/2009 11:12:18 AM

Ohh - I'm stunned.!!! On what charge? Or are we locking people up in the States right now the way we got used to doing it in Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo? Here I am excersing my right to free speech and incarceration is being suggested? Didn't realize the States had turned into a police state duirng my absence.

        • Posted By: John Dough @ 04/09/2009 8:06:56 PM

Well the democrats are in charge that will be next get the guns, contriol the banks and the polulace.

  • Posted By: Rawleighf @ 04/06/2009 10:57:13 AM

say what you want about Putin, but that guy is a shrewd good leader!

  • Posted By: Rawleighf @ 04/06/2009 10:54:53 AM

Russia was going through the same thing pre- nazi Germany did and the US. Here in the US the Blacks will change or continue changing somewhat in National attitudes in every category under Democratic processes.. When Putin "destroyed" Yuko" Oil, and its oligarchy the Russian government retook control of its finances and revenues and "tamed" a certain class of Billionaires,. termed as "Mafia" etc. Lets hope that the newly formed Oligarchy here will be as successful with the likes of Obama et al in power.. .

  • Posted By: St. Petersburger @ 02/16/2009 3:50:49 AM

And what will you do if Russia fails? Ride to the "Rescue" and loot our natural resources? Thank God for people like Putin, who has the smarts and experience to anticipate the West and block it. As for the article being spot on or not - you really would do much, much better minding your own house. And there's nothing "weird" in that suggestion.

    • Posted By: BIGSRBIN @ 02/27/2009 8:10:55 PM

ST PETERSBURG YOU ARE VERY SMART. EVERYONE FROM NAPOLEON TO KAISER TO HITLER TO BRITS TO USA WANTED TO TAKE WHAT MOTHER RUSSIA HAS. CAN YOU SAY NATURAL RECOURSES IN ELEVEN TIME ZONES.

      • Posted By: Trooper101st @ 03/09/2009 10:14:43 AM

Yeah, and they STILL want more. F-ing greedy tough guy gangsters. You will eventually push too far.

    • Posted By: bighappy @ 02/17/2009 10:04:44 PM

"loot our natural resources" - this is your ptoblem. Several countries (USA included) welcomed foreign capital and prosper from it. Your mentality - do not loot our land and resources, better let them rot. Industrial countries invest capital in China even your infrastructure is more suited, outsource jobs to India evwn your education level is till better (not for long). You had so great opportunities during oil boom, but instead you soon will be forgettable third world country again.

  • Posted By: Trooper101st @ 03/09/2009 10:11:18 AM

I could care less. I hope Russia goes under, and that snake Putin gets wat he deserves. He and his friends in KGB have become wealthy, they are gangsters, and have thier paws into many countries. Putin is a criminal and so are his buddies who live in the US, Europe, etc.

I live in Magnitogorsk and work at MMK. Some inaccuracies is the article undermines credence to the author in general.
There are only 409,000 citizens in town.
There is no Engels avenue in town.
Six of the MMK's eight blast furnaces are working.
MMK couldn't be the main employer in this city for 80 years because it was build only 77 years ago.
Of course, there are many difficulties in our life now but I consider this article as unprofessional, misrepresenting reality and forcing fears and despair.

Least we forget, Russia, China, India, Pakistan, The United States, England, France, and Israel singularly and collectively have enough nuclear devices to destroy the earth many times over. Instability in Russia, as well in other parts of the world, should be sobering to all of us. The current economic situation cannot be about competition, nationalism, and protectionism if society, and even life itself, is going to survive. We are all in this together and the only way out is all together. The time for sloganeering, ???the US (or any national entity for that matter) forever,??? has faded into the far distant past. Forget the nationalist rhetoric and grasp the fact that we are one fragile world in a hostile universe and if people and nations retreat to nationalist banners, as they did in the 1930's, the outcome will make WWII look benign. All together now, ???we are the family of humanity??????

From Moscow to London to Washington to Beijing and more, maybe workers around the world have far more in common with each other than with their incompetent, money grubbing, power hungry leaders in their corporate-sponsored governments. Workers arounfd the world need to try to build links with each other, instead of being fooled into conflicts by our so-called "leaders." Please don't censor this Newsweek.

Dear US Forever - you're really surprised that not all Americans subscribe to the atrocious bias and Russophobia in the Western press - how touching! Don't need to sample Russian lafe - I've already live here for the last couple of years and like it. Can't tell you that I'm itching to get back to New York, what with the financial crisis, and mortgage forecloures, and massive layoffs and punging stock market. Don't feel that my rights are beign repressed. DOn't get beaten up when I show my US passport. Haven't seen any bears yet. Seem to have freedom of speech. Have yet to see Putin's goons that all of you are so worried about. People seem descent. Certainly not the overmaxed out credit card, cratering 401(k) crowd that one hangs out with back home. Maybe you should come have a look - could change or open your mind. Now wouldn't THAT be shocking?

Material in the article is put in such a way that while reading this one gets perception that: Putin is the reason for economy collapse in Russia. It is not. The real reason for WORLD financial crisis are banks, particularly US banks. That is where everything started. The same article may be written about any western country. The situation is not good for everyone. Somewhere even worse. Put had done everything exactly like Joseph ??? Bible story about the cows (while oil prices had went up for 7 years in a row, he created special multi-billion funds. And now these funds support Russian economy). US are in a better position. US has money printing press. Poulson needs 700B ??? just cash it; Obama asks for another 700B ??? here we go. The question is ??? who is going to pay back? Your children? Next generation after them? Who? US already has trillions of dollars in debt.

St. Petersburger is butt hurt that his great dictator Putin will be hanged by the people and that Russia will go down the drain as a failed state. BOO HOO. Russians had all these dreams about rebuilding their crappy empire and taking back all the regions that escaped from the USSR. It's not going to happen. Never trust Russia ! Never trust Russians !

  • Posted By: chrisgIII @ 02/20/2009 4:46:39 PM

Looks like Stalin, I mean Putin, has a lot of explaining to do. The Russians are really to blame themselves. They have overwhelmingly supported this dictator and his anti-democartic policies.Instead of having journalists killed and businessmen jailed or exiled he should have been paying attention to the economy.

    • Posted By: St. Petersburger @ 02/21/2009 9:02:36 AM

Dear ChrisgIII - you clearly were not a history major. Repeating the over the top comparisons of the shapers of US public opinion (comparing Putin to Stalin) does you no credit, but merely underscores teh gullibility of the American public at large. Now what would you rather be - wrong or stupid? Although I suppose that being stupid is a nice way to insullate yourself from ever realizing that you are wrong. Ah, well..... We Americans certainly seem to deserve our reputation....

Dear US Forever - From today's New York Daily News - Article about Angelina Jolie scouting filming locations in the Washington Height neighborhood of Manhattan - "Another neighbor believed a vacant eight-room apartment might have been chosen as the home for Angelina's character ??? an American spy wrongly accused of being a Russian double agent out to kill the President." One crude little example and don't you ever, ever insinuate again that there is not so much Russian bias in the US as my posts would have people believe. The bias is all pervasive and given Jolie's star-wattage power will be blasted around screens around the world in due course..
