All of you give your oppinion appon issues you have no idea about, there is no such a thing as European Israelis- thanks god we aren't European, and we don't differ by the regions we came from. There are a vast majority of 80% Jews in the Jewish state and a minority of 20% Arabs, some of them aren't loyal to the state or the law, most of them are, and there is a probelm of loyalty for one hand and a problem of differece in culture for the other hand, there is a huge cultural difference just as in the states ther is a huge difference between Afro-Americans and WASPS and in Europe the Muslims and Turks aren't treated better, so please before you criticize Israel look into your own country and fix your own probelm, we in Israel have a great future leadership and young generation we will take care of our future, we don't need anyones guidence/

European Israelis will have to learn to treat Arab, Asian and African Isaelis with much more dignity and fairness. As things stand today Israel is a ticking nuclear time bomb. And I would not be surprised if Israel were to become the first country after the USA in 1945, to use its nuclear arsenal.

If Israel treats its own a bit better her enemies will lose their greatest international wedge. If I were Bibi, I would bend over backwards twice over to extend all fairness to all my citizens. Then I would be able to bomb Iran every four years as needed.

Biggest threat to Isreal are not the muslims but Isreal itself.

Two facts about war, we tend to always forget; all wars are brutal, all wars end.

Isreal holding on to its present policies, has two choices either take over the everyone who opposes its policies/existence in which case it will self destruct from inside or to keep the status quo, which means sooner or later isreal would be eliminated. Both paths in my opinion would be a travesty.

Its time to step away right wing policies and left wing policies, instead bring in Fairwing policies into effect. It is unfair to keep all those who are rightful true residents of the land to be kept as refugees away from their original homes and many kept in warsaw ghetto like conditions of the territories aka west bank and gaza. It is also unfair to say all those who have spent so much of their lives in building isreal to leave. Its time for Isreal to invite everyone back and its time for the world to accept Isreal. But it has to be a unified democratic secular country. not democratic and jewish, which by essence it mean it is out to exclude others and hence not fully democratic.

The two state solution is not the path to lasting peace at best its a pipe dream, the resentment will linger for ages, there has to be some sort of reconciliation as it has happened in South Africa.

Isreal has to understand, till that happens this war will go on and on. The mosque and other very holy sites such as cave of the patriarch no muslim will ever give up on regaining that

All Arab countries in North Africa expelled their loyal and legal Jewish communities since WWII.

hello joe, I am a muslim. I support Israel and consider fellow jews as equals in all respects. what happened post world war 2 was a travesty against our jewish brothers and sisters. No government has the right to expel any of it's law abiding citizens. Howwever, in the quest to move forward to establish peace, don't you think it's right to follow a bad deed with an equally bad deed? Is this how meaningful change is brought about? I thank you for your time and consideration... Salaam and Shalom

Zakaria's article misses an important context concerning his analysis of Avigdor Liberman's policies toward Israel's Arabs. Exchanging Arab border towns for Israeli West Bank settlements may be a sensible solution to the problem of national identification. Nobody loses their home or has to move. Further, where is the analysis of the status of Jews is in neighboring Arab lands where they lived for centuries? Where is the Jewish community of Jordan, or Saudi Arabia? Fair is fair. The entire region must be included in this analysis. This picks on only one party.

    • Posted By: nawawimohamad @ 02/20/2009 3:47:07 AM

byad ami you really cunning. Yes you have a twisted mind, because the fact is the Arabs(both Muslims & Christians) were thrown out of their homeland with the illegal creation of the Zionist sate. Now you want to claim the whole area for yourself and at the same time critizing South Africa during the arpatheid rule. The issue here is that Israel have occupied Arab lands by force. Full stop. The jews are still not satisfied, then go running and crying to Uncle Sam telling him, that everyone in the world is anti-semetic. The Jews are themselves to be blamed!

      • Posted By: jbz7879 @ 02/20/2009 5:38:04 PM

and jews will soon reap what they are sowing for the arabs today -it is getting to be the writing on the wall -you see israeli desperation as they take their frustration out on civilians in gaza -signs of impending failure for a state based on violence itself and maintained by fueling violence in every moment of its existence .

The Jews this and the Jews that....Nawawimohamad, you are sooooo boring. The Jews cause the hurricanes and tornadoes and the wars and the diseases and the pestilence and the bad crops. yeah, yeah, yawn. Who has time for imbeciles such as yourself, who can't stop to give a topic more thought than the two seconds it takes to blame the Jews.

    • Posted By: nawawimohamad @ 02/20/2009 3:39:31 AM

justalibre, yes many people blame the Jews for all the trouble in this world . This is a fact. You just have to accept it no matter how boring it can be. The Jews are themselves to be blamed. I need not elaborate further.

In this article Zakaria brings forward an issue which may be the most crucial issue in history, discrimination. Even though discrimination is not full deracinated from our country we would never allow to play an exclusive role in the development of our country. As all citizens of this country know, this issue has caused much tension around the world and even in our own homes. Israel is prepared to force its minority citizens, the Arab Israeli???s, out of the country. A Israeli politician by the name of Avigdor Lieberman has gained great support and popularity in the government as his party won five seats in the Knesset, similar to our legislative branch. This is also the man who made it clear that he is against the Palestinian Militants, but his supreme target is the Arab Israelis, who he deems ???a worse threat than Hamas.
Zakaria creates this forensic argument with a tone of warning, reminding us of what actions like these have had in the past. He includes a quote from a member of Israel???s new Republic, Martin Peretz, who clearly opposes Lieberman and then includes feelings of his own,??? No Liberal democracy I know of since World War II has disenfranchised or expelled its own citizens???. This line alludes to the bloodiest and most ungratefully remembered time in recent human history, the Holocaust. Zakaria plays on the pathos of many people around the world by comparing what???s happening in Israel to such a tragedy.
The irony of the situation is also placed in the article, because the Jewish Majority lets this discrimination happen underneath their nose and surprisingly it is widely accepted. These Arabs are descendents of people who lived on the land know as Israel before it became known as Israel. These Arabs make up 20% of the population and are estimated to make up 25% of the population by 2025. But, these Arabs face discrimination in many forms, including immigration, land ownership, education, and employment. Why is it under discussion that Theses Arabs be stripped of their citizenship and that they be forced to move out of the country into villages similar to concentration camps? Is it fair that the Israel Government restrict the influence Arab political parties by not including them in the Government?
Fear of Arabs, by some of their involvement in the recent attacks on the Palestinian people, may have spurred this discrimination in the minds of the citizens in Israel. Not all of the Arabs call themselves a member of these furiously feared factions, like Hamas and Hizbullah. As these tensions fluctuate, Zakaria makes it clear that the way this situation ends will bode the fate of ???Israel as a country, as a Jewish state, and as a democracy???.

The Jews are actully cowards who always use proxies for their actions. Eversince the creation of Israel as an illegal zionist stae the Jews have been pampered by the US and aliies. This will eventually lead to their downfall because the Arabs will turn out to be more resilient, resourceful and determined to survive and eventually take over Israel and wipe out the Jews. Like all previous civilisations and superpowers during ancient times, the US and allies will one day lose their power and influence. Even at this moment Israel is a state constantly at war thus its citizens will not be able to live and experience a real peaceful atmosphere. Their daily lives are not normal but being a very stubborn race and stupidly believeing that they are the "chosen ones", they continue with their endeavour. But until then they are just wasting their time, effort and resources for NOTHING really. The bickering in Israel will continue because they are not a homogenous society. Israel could be described as a "Zombie State"

Why have you allowed this callejero person to continue to send the same message over and over again. Can you not stop that repetition? When he has something new to say it can be printed. But allowing the same message to keep appearing over and over you just discourage any real discourse on this site.

The essence of Judaism is the belief in the One G-d. Indeed, all monotheistic faiths trace their origin to Abraham, the discoverer (or re-discoverer) of this truth. G-D IS ONE AND FOR ALL

Why doesn't anyone mention in these anti-semetic screeds, the number of middle eastern Jews who where expelled from their homes in Jordon, Lybia, Syria, Iran & Iraq. Each of these countries had Jewish populations that had been living there for centruies. They where removed from their homes, their property was confiscated by the country they had called home and they where sent out with only the clothes on their backs. This was done after Israel became a state. They where absorbed by the new state of Israel, even though they would have wanted to stay in the country of the ancestors, the only place they had called home for thousands of years.
This was of course in retribution for the establishment of the state of Israel. There where over 4 million Middle Eastern Jews who where forced to leave their homes.
How come nobody ever speaks of these " refugees"? Is it because Israel absorbed them into their new state, while the arab countries did not accept the Palestinians as refugees. They put them into crowed refugee camps and never allowe them to make a real home. Eveyone here has a share of the blame for the untenable situation that now exits. But the people who use these issues to go back to the naked anti-semitism that exists in these listing is very scary. Some ot the comments are anti-Israel, but most are just good old fashion anti-semitism hiding .as being anti-Israel.
