You can't kill something that was already dead. the so called bi-particain is a figment of one's imagination. The majority has always rejected proposed amandment by the minority. the very fact that only a simpleone vote majority in committee or on the floor in almost all legislation shows this to be true. The majority holds the one vote and rarely needs a minority vote.

What the call biparticianship is merely allowing the other side their say and then imposing the majority rule.

How on earth could anyone expect anything less? We're talking about politicians who attach each other and their families in the most vicious way during campaigns. Do we expect that is all forgotten when the election is over?

The topic to discuss is your article related to Africcan American History Month and North Lawndale.. When Dr. Martin Luther Kind amde his historic stand in North Lawndale to publicize the "deplorable living conditions" in North Lawndale - the conditions here were not as deplorable as was reported in the major news outlets.

Most of the homes were owned by the people who lived in them and they were kept up and well maintianed. The vacant lots and abamdoned buildings were not nearly as prevalent then as now and most abandoned bnuildigs were abandonded synogues, left vacant and decaying by a Jewish population moving to the suburbs where the scost of living was cheaper. Actually, Dr King's actions were esented by many of the residents who knew the problem was being exaggerated but many suppoorted his efforts to better the residents where blacks live.
Moreover, North Lawndale was a vibrant area teeming with businesses owned by residnets, for example, in a four block radius, there were two black owned gas stations, it is nearly impossible to find a black owned gas staiton in the enitre city of Chicago presently for two reasons, more people of different cultures owing businesses in commmunities where most of the residents are black, and because of "black flight". Once again, black are fleeing in large numbers backjto the south and other parts of the country where there is less violence and better economic opportunities.

As for crime in North Lawndale, the biggest misconception is that blacks, who are 75% to 80% of the convicted criminals, are the culprits is wrong, wrong, wrong. When a crime is cpommitted in this area- everyone automatically thinks the suspect is black, but as seen recently, when a car was stopped with two white inhabitants - they were found to have large amounts of cocaine in their possession and ran tover he police officer who stopped them in an effort to escape arrest. Nothing was printed in the major news outlets, so far as I know about what their punishment was or the outcome of this crime, but the point is that it was unusual for these people to even have come under suspicion if not for the efforts of people like myself who have seen and reported the criminal acts being committed by interrracial gangs who are allowed to operate freely in our communities.

North Lawndale is currently experiencing a re-vitalizing effort, which for the most part is succeeding, but I wanted to clear up a few of the misconceptions that abound regard ing this vibrant, alive area.

Lastly, Unlike the south sections of the city, North Lawndale was always an integrated neighborhood too and that may be why there are so many misconceptions about the area.

The New Deal did not get us out of a depression. The employment rate went down because so many were drafted and the depression did not end until after the war when the government cut spending greatly. Government spending does not work.

Two points: (1) Turnouts for primary elections are depressed not only by extremist politics but by the lack of contests. In New Jersey, where I live, the past five primaries were not worth a vote since not one office was contested. In part, this is due to the difficult task of overcoming entrenched political machines. (2) Your New Jersey commenter who blames Gov. Corzine and the Statehouse Democrats for raising property taxes is overlooking that these taxes are set by municipal and county governments and local school boards. Nearly 60 percent of property taxes goes to the schools. State taxes send more than $10 billion back to these local taxing entities to keep property taxes down. Perhaps is Gov. Corzine balances the state budget by reducing these transfers, the localities will be compelled to make cuts that would please our correspondent -- but few others.

    More worries.

The tax revolts begun in the West are now spreading east, where livid New Jerseyites woke to find that their Democrat Legislature and Governor has now slapped them with a 47% increase in their property taxes. The MSM deftly deflects the fact that the Stim Package contains within it,no assistance whatever for Katrina-caused repair of still-extant damage in Louisiana and Mississippi. Burris becomes the corrupt Democrats albatross, while Jack Murthas [D-Pa] PMA pals are being served with warrants by the FBI as we write, and we find at the same time,Chris Dodd [D-Ct] was not only up to his bushy eyebrows with COUNTRYWIDE as a ''Friend of Angelo''[Mozilo],but also another Angelo pal,one R.Allen Stanford, fugitive financier who has just been roped in and served his papers by the feds.[and a huge Democrat Party contributor. The Center for Responsive Politics whose website will follow has a full roundup of the Friends of Stanford that will include Pelosi [D-Ca] and Reid [D-Nv] among Dodd and others].
Merely having a scribbler for HUFFINGTON POST as a portion of the Washington Press Corps ,and being called upon by Obama is not assisting them in the journalistic veracity Dept. as discovered by a sharpeyed conservative blogger named ''Johnny Dollar'' who found out that a video used by HUFFINGTON to blast FOX News over the ''monkey-Obama-racism-NY Post'' controversy that was picked up by last nights COUNTDOWN [ MSNBC W/ Keith Olbermann] was a doctored fraud. Dollar has the video, which has been removed by HUFFINGTON and the actual video and remarks by FOX anchor John Gibson. You may view the lame apology by HUFFINGTON on their website. [the ''intellectual poverty''addressed elsewhere on these boards].
Jim Clyburn [D-SC] now insinuates that ''racism [anti-black] is behind''the refusal of several GOP governors to take Stim dough, not bothering to add that The Hamptons has more African Americans than all of Alaska, whose GOP governor is also turning the money down.[more ''intellectual poverty'' as weirdly addressed by AG Eric Holder]. And this is all for just this morning. What will the afternoon bring I wonder?

Many have made the statement, The Bush Presidency is a failed Presidency.
The fact is, GW Bush did not fail, he himself said his only mistake was the Mission Accomplished banner.
Bush advanced the GOP agenda significantly, many republicans have proudly proclaimed there is no turning back.

The only clear failure was he failed to move the SS Funds to Wall Street. For most people that crash was a loss in retirement funds, for the few it was huge gain. Money does not disappear, it moves to new pockets.
Considering the size and scope of the Bush Black Friday, Reagans black Monday was just practice by comparison. Reagan called it profit taking, Bush just said, get over it.

Oil companies enjoy record profits. Halliburton was a smallish oil field maintenance company and KBR an incompetent joke in the construction industry. Both have made incredible profits that are largely tax free.

Average wages are $2000 lower, 5 million people are unemployed, and 3 million or more have lost their homes while the CEO of Countrywide for example, walked away with $632 million, and successfully blamed the poor as the cause of the housing crisis.
The educational system is producing degrees in Sunday school, so we now go to India to find technically qualified people.

Manufacturing that once provided 28% of the population with a living wage is now at 8% and manufacturing is moving to Canada because Canada has easier immigration policies for the importation of those technically skilled people.

Thousands of profitable manufacturing companies have been bought, drained of cash, gone into bankruptcy and sold for parts. The Bushs and Romneys and others who engaged in this practice call it venture capitalism, even thought it appears to some as a looting of Americas successful small business???s.

The Republican agenda has, to a significant extent moved forward but still has a way to go.

We have Eric Cantor the champion of the middle class with only his goal of more corporate tax cuts to offer as evidence of that middle class support.
John Boehner targeted Social Security even before he discovered tanning beds.
The insanely hilarious or should I say hilariously insane Michelle Bachman worried about the rich disappearing.
Then we have the Corkers, McConnells, and McCains who proclaim the attempt at helping 90% of America as theft.

These people will carry on the Reagan/Bush/Republican vision for America, perhaps someday succeeding in eliminating the evil entitlements like Social Security, food stamps, unemployment benefits, higher wages etc. Then we can all get our jollies watching old people starve. It may require one more Republican President.

The Republican vision for America is alive and well. Bush moved that vision forward. He has outdone Reagan, not just in the economic transformation of America, but also by making himself a war time president.
Perhaps if Bush had better oratory skills he would be up there with Reagan in the Presidential rankings.

Alter [or NEWSWEAK,or both],displays evident confusion in the ''Poof'' subtitle.

The GOP does not use ''Superdelegates''. These are the very ''handful of activist voters'' ushered in by Bob Schrum and Bob Beckel in the early 1980s that is currently wrecking the system virtually guaranteeing, insofar as the Democrats are concerned, that ''the smoke-filled back room deals'' of the ''All The Kings Men''era will continue, and also made a mockery of the political system in states such as Michigan and Florida.
Obviously, Alters diatribe against the GOP cuts both ways. Libertarians of the ''Terminator''mold are already aligning themselves with the renegade Republicans who rightly saw that the Big Three for instance, would continue demanding more money to prop their ailing fortunes [such as subsidizing 46-48 year-old UAW retirees for one example].
Then the new mantra from Obama and the new FDIC Chairwoman that those who were able to muddle through the mess ,keeping their jobs and paying faithfully on mortgages on modest homes would have to suck it up for the mixed bag of those who tragically lost jobs and home, scofflaws who gamed the market, those who engaged in purchasing far out of their league in order to get into tonier zip codes, and those who persisted in housing speculation.
Those of us who will have to shell out for all of these are a restive bunch,as hundreds of protesters in Mesa and Denver attested to while Obamas motorcade drove through. There is two trains of thought here. One,that the administration does not know what it is doing with the stim package cracking it wide open to fraud and abuse, and two, that the ''culture of corruption''that led Democrats to victory over the GOP has been replaced by more corruption, angering Arnolds ''middle roaders'' and libertarians this much more. Tax revolts are breaking out everywhere,California is a broken mess, feds are closing in on Democrats on all fronts, while the trivial [monkey cartoons -as-racism],outperforms meaningful dialogue on the stimpackage issues.

This is a prime example of Barack Obama's partisan concept of the way in which government! should work in a bipartisan manner!

Today, Barack Obama plans to sign into law the Porkulus Package, which masqueraded as a Stimulus Package, and which was approved by the House democrat representatives and senators who had not seen the final bill, and did not even know what it contained.

They have the unmitigated gall to call that responsible government!

Thankfully all of the House Republican representatives and senators, with the lone exception of 3 unprincipled RINO senators, performed their duty and obligation to the American citizens by refusing to approve a gigantic 1,087 page omnibus bill which was suddenly foisted upon them with no opportunity to scrutinize the proposals.

It???s ironic that the so-called Stimulus Package, which just had to get passed without being read, and without delay, could wait for 4 days to be signed by the President.

The American public, especially the taxpayers, will have the opportunity to register their disapproval of Congress and the President by voting the democrat representatives and some of the democrat senators who are scheduled to face re-election, out of office soon in 2010.

And then, a few years later in 2012, Barack Obama could be relegated to joining the ranks of the unemployed as his just reward.

What option do the American taxpayers have with respect to funding the massive taxation burden that will be imposed on them to finance Barack Obama???s sinister and diabolic enslavement of the masses scheme?

Why not do exactly what the Treasury Secretary, the top administrator of the IRS, Timothy Geithner has done for the past 5 years - refuse to pay any income taxes - for the rest of Barack Obama???s presidency?

After all, Barack Obama has stated that he considers tax dodging to be just a minor personal mistake - so a precedent has been set, and everyone should be entitled to the same consideration!

If a majority of the American taxpayers adopted that strategy, the Porkulus Package would be effectively obstructed and defeated!

    • Posted By: bkrummel @ 02/17/2009 1:56:45 AM

I agree with you that a majority of congress probably did not read through this 1,087 page bill. I myself tried to read though it and got about 100 pages in before I realized this would take forever and I had no idea what I was reading. Somehow I doubt most of congress read it and they do this sort of thing for a living. (Reading though this bill to comprehension would take several days of focused reading.) If they didn't read it, that is a major disservice to their constituents.

As for the "3 unprincipled RINO senators", these senators made an effort to cut some of the wasteful spending and compromise on the bill since that is what they viewed as in the best interest of their constituents. You may disagree with them, but they are certainly not unprincipled. I wish more in congress, on both parties, would make similar efforts and it is greatly disappointing that they didn't on this stimulus bill. Also, just because they are moderate Republicans and work with the Democrats does not make them "RINOs". The true RINOs are the idiots who blindly follow people like Bush, Palin, or Limbaugh, abandoning their limited government conservative principles, good sense, and their country's best interest while completely ignorant and uncaring that they have done so, and who then will still call themselves Republicans. It's our party too! And if the true RINOs don't start acknowledging that soon, Republicans aren't winning until at least 2020.

Now I've talked to you before and I think you are reasonable man. Yet this post is full of pro-Republican, anti-Democrat partisan garbage. This acrimony between the two parties and this cheerleading is part of what got our party and our country into the current messes. So let's drop the talking points and cheerleading and get serious. You can do better.

        bkrummel -

Yes, we have conversed previously, and likewise I do regard you as reasonable and intelligent.

I described the 3 politicians as unprincipled RINO senators because they violated 3 of the 4 main tenets of Republicanism - minimal government, individual freedom, personal responsibility, and strong national defense.
That is unprincipled for a Republican!.

Also, instead of blindly approving the mega proposal which was heavily weighted down and handicapped by non-stimulus partisan attempts to subvert the democratic (as opposed to democrat) process, a responsible politician would demand that all the pork be removed immediately, and only true measures which would stimulate the economy in 2009 be included and discussed.

Those 3 RINO senators should have itemized and focused on all of the non-essential proposals, and asked for an explanation as to why they were included, and who included them..

That is what I would regard as responsible bipartisan representation!

        • Posted By: bkrummel @ 02/17/2009 1:21:41 PM

Well, your reasons for calling the senators RINOs is sound. Though I still don't like the term "RINO", as it is frequently used by social conservatives to marginalize moderate Republicans who are true conservatives. (It would be nice if the terms conservative and RINO weren't so greatly distorted into very different means.) Moreover, by your definition of a RINO, Bush and most of the Republicans in congress are RINOs.

Moreover, at least the 3 senators got in there to try to reduce the size of the bill and broker a compromise. It would have been nice to see some honest attempt to improve the bill and compromise by the other congressmen. Instead, we got a bill that was very partisan and irresponsible (though one can argue that it was necessary). On the other hand, if the 3 senators didn't compromise, the bill would have been held up until a real compromise was struck, which may or may not have been a good thing depending on the compromise and how urgent the bill is. Personally, I'd rather they take an extra month to get it right.

          • Posted By: Davole @ 02/17/2009 11:50:28 PM

            bkrummel -

Although it doesn't motivate me personally, I do appreciate you agreeing with my reasons for calling the 3 disenting senators RINOs.

It is ironic that democrats often expect Republicans to be bipartisan - (i.e. by abandoning their principles to support a blatant democrat platform which is 180 degrees apart from Republicanism), whereas never are democrats expected or willing to be bipartisan by supporting Republican policy for the betterment of America.

Those 3 dissenting RINO senators, if they were to be performing their responsibilities to the best of their expected abilities, should have insisted that all non-stimulus items be removed from the Porkulus Package before they would agree to accepting the proposal. Attempting to reduce the size of the bill and brokering a compromise is not a competent solution or position - it is only a weak-kneed attempt at trying to get re-elected. .

They should have demanded an explanation as to why those non-stimulus proposals were even included in what was foisted as being a stimulus bill. And they should have demanded an explanation as to why the majority of the expenditures would only take place not immediately in 2009, but instead just shortly before the 2010 and 2012 elections.

Also, they should have attempted to negotiate a compromise by insisting that all non-stimulus proposals be removed immediately from the package. Notice also that very few democrat representatives and senators were willing to take that principled stance. Why did they shirk that duty? Maybe they didn't regard principled decisions as their duty.

Yes, I agree with your statement that "if the 3 senators didn't compromise, the bill would have been held up until a real compromise was struck." That would have been a much better approach to proposing and adopting a bill which would actually have a decent chance of stimulating the economy.

By enacting this grossly over-inflated omnibus bill, Barack Obama, previously the demonstrated most radicallly left democrat senator, has managed to enslave the American population to radical socialism, and will finance it on the backs of the current taxpayers, their children, their grandchildren, and their grandchildrens' children.

Now I ask you - is that the American way, and the American dream, or is that an action just slightly less than treason and sedition?

            • Posted By: bkrummel @ 02/18/2009 3:38:16 PM

Yes, it seems like both parties want bipartisanship only when it benefits them by the other party conceding to their agenda. True bipartisanship is about people with different view points compromising, with give and take on both sides. It is also about looking past one's own agenda to find common ground and serve the people, something both parties did a poor job on with respect to this stimulus bill.

I optimistically belief that the 3 senators and Obama were trying to do what they thought was best for the country. Maybe this is too optimistic. But I wouldn't say they were almost treasonous.

This massive spending beyond our means apparently is now the American way and has been so for decades. It got us into this mess and may lead to a much bigger mess later. This is nothing more than simple foolishness.

I myself have doubts about whether this stimulus bill will work and what it means for our country long term (massive spending, more big government). To clarify, I hope above all else that my country thrives and thus hope I am wrong, but I still have my doubts. I think you, Davole, and I share similar doubts. Because of my doubts and the way the stimulus bill was passed, I think the 3 senators, Obama, and in fact all of congress blew it big time. They blew it with good intentions and unknown consequences, but they blew it nonetheless and this is something our country needed to get right.

Only a catastrophe can do that. Unfortunately for us all, this fraud is more than capable of providing the country with one.

    Harley, Davole, drop it.

You do realize that you both are unhappy with the current Republican Party, though for different reasons. You two could be working together to change your party for the better.

Harley, you clearly have a vendetta against Bush and his supporters and there is some merit to this. Davole has a disagreement with this and understandably so. You two will never see eye-to-eye on this. Moreover, this argument has overtaken many discussions on Newsweek already and is frequently off-topic. This is simply stupid.

Now we could waste more negative energy on this nonsense, or you could move past this is actually discuss the topic at hand, namely Alter's article on bipartisanship. It's up to you. If you want to move past this, just stop engaging in this disagreement and ignore it when the other doesn't.

That said, if anyone is willing to explain why I should support open primaries, I'm all ears.
