There exist an influential force for evil & wicked which happens to be strong.
However! There is another force that is superior, better, and stronger.

You need to vet your facts better. According to an article in a local newspaper, Mr. Meeks had gotten his job back about three weeks earlier AND "his wife had promised to end correspondence with an old school friend that had made him jealous." The article also said that there were some domestic problems. According to the e-mail he sent, apparently he didn???t want his family torn apart. (Find the article in the 2/6 Columbus Dispatch.) Contrary to the impression you have given, i.e., he killed his family due to economic problems, there appears to have been a different motive. More than likely she was going to leave him for this ???old school friend;??? jealously, not money was probably the motive.

Also, the Lupoe???s case did not involve a murder-suicide over loss of income due to downsizing, contrary what you suggest in your article. You want us to believe that due to layoffs, men are becoming maniacal killers since they can no longer support their kids. Please find an article on Michelle Malkin???s website about this, which includes the letter Mr. Lupoe wrote. Umm, they lost their jobs due to issues entirely unrelated to the economy; they lied about something pertaining to their qualifications, I believe. (It sounds like he had to get the union involved, and frankly, after reading this letter, I have to question how he is even qualified to work as a ???tech??? in a hospital; scares me to think about the educational background - or lack thereof - of those who are working at hour hospitals. However, in light of his union comments, I guess I understand how he got his position, and note this is a reason why unions do more harm than good - they protect unqualified people or those who should not have positions just because they are union brothers. That is an entirely different discussion for another day.)

I have to say that you need to vet your facts better. It???s stories like this that are causing me to lose all confidence in our media and the press. You latch onto certain facts that you can use to put your particular slant on the case without addressing the entire story because if you bring out all of the facts, then your story is not what you wanted it to be. (This is exactly why Obama got elected.)

I thought the purpose of the press was to get out the truth, whether you as a reporter want to hear the truth that comes out.

Male suicide over divorce isn't just something that happens in the US. Here's an example of a man in Ireland who got fed up with the unfairness of divorce, particularly losing contact with his kids, and burned himself alive in his ex-wife's attorney's office as a result.

    http://www.indymedia.ie/article/67195

This I can understand better than killing the kids. That still makes no sense.

This is a bias article and you need to look at all facts before making assumption of why men kill their wives. Some men are just sick and twisted but hide it very well. You the author need to understand that their are many factors to men who kill their wives, most of them do it out of cruelty.

  • Posted By: katinthemeadows @ 02/21/2009 10:37:11 PM

Their wives probably noticed this need for utter control and might have left them if they had the means ad/or the courage to raise the kids alone. These guys probably have something like Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Their egos are too fragile to admit defeat and they always put the blame on someone else...usually a woman. With regards to altruism, it's too bad that people don't get how much love and even laughs one can have when at the bottom financially. Many people speak of "the hungry years" as the best years of their lives. That's when it gets real.

Those who wish to accurately understand the nature of domestic violence (which this article is actually about) should visit www.mediaradar.org. RADAR is the most scientifically-authoritative organization on the issue.

    • Posted By: Joda @ 02/21/2009 8:35:24 PM

Media Radar a bunch of unethical propaganda written by backlash fathers rights groups.

  • Posted By: davidrusher@swbell.net @ 02/21/2009 1:09:47 AM

This article is a self-aggrandizing feminist misrepresentation of fact. The Duluth Model is theory not accepted in peer-reviewed science. Divorce is indeed a primary precipitator: divorce is the only lawsuit for which there is no defense. We revoke men's place in society, take away their children, most of their life savings, and a huge chunk of future income. We do this to hundreds of thousands of men annually and then we wonder why some of them go nuts?

    • Posted By: Joda @ 02/21/2009 8:32:29 PM

Instead of rationaizing their acts of violence, GET THEM HELP.

  • Posted By: Joda @ 02/21/2009 8:29:34 PM

Those suggesting the web stie mediaradar live under an ideological bunker. this site ONLY discusses women's violence towards men, claims the link between pregnancy and homicide is false, grossly takes quotes (Parmley; NOW) out of context, and would be considered unethical by any credible professional - it's a bunch of propaganda. It's written by backlash groups.

According to Dr. Evan Stark, men commit more serious and fatal child abuse. Women commit 60% of child abuse, the majority of which is neglect (HHS). Neglect can be neglecting to buy medicine, etc. - this can be caused by poverty, not poor parenting. Child abuse usually occurs in kids under 3 - when women are the primary caretakers. Women commit more child abuse b/c of this and b/c they are often alone. When you compare men and women together, men commit more serious and fatal abuse.

In the US, we lose about 1500 women, about 1100 children, and 400 men each year to domestic violence.

Separation is the biggest risk factor for women - this is the height of when danger can occur. Women's expression of fear is the best predictor for a femicide (unfortunately, few believe her).

Divorce appears to be a horrendous experience for men. It's not easy for women either (they do worse in labor and remarriage markets). However, me must get resources for men going through separation and divorce. There are some Fathers Rights groups that grab these hurt men and turn that hurt into anger (against women, feminists, family court, etc. --external factors, as this article points out). We must have resources that are constructive for these men (and women).

I think men who kill their families and then commit suicide are totally narcissistic. They actually believe their families can't survive without them nor do they want to leave their families behind to go on to possibly live happier lives without them. If they truly loved their families, they would want them to survive and go on to live happy lives. It's kinda like they think, I love you, so I have to kill you. I would not want anyone to love me like this. They should shoot themselves first....

Actually, we understand quite a bit about domestic violence and the psychology of the abuser. Unfortunately you have to read between the lines of this interview to even understand this is the subject under discussion.

There's nothing "normal," about people who murder their families.

  • Posted By: junieb @ 02/21/2009 4:00:00 AM

The folks pointing out that fatal child abuse is mostly caused by women are right. Some of that difference is likely because the family law courts in this country routinely award 100% custody or close to it to women who are dangerous to their children rather than to safer fathers.

For example, look at this Kansas City case in which a 28 year old single mother suffocated her 7 year old son. http://www.kctv5.com/news/18669773/detail.html#-

The father was trying to get custody because he knew the mother was dangerous. The police had even almost shot her once for her actions that endangered herself and others, including her baby. But the courts awarded custody to her anyway.

Why do family law courts make such insane decisions? Part of it may be sexist bias. But put that aside for a moment as it tends to just get everybody all riled up and fighting each other rather than focusing on fixing the problems.

One of the big answers for the poor decisions family law courts make are that they are biased towards perjurers. Perjury is no longer prosecuted in the US. Every dishonest slimebag in family court knows this, so they perjure themselves all they can. Each time they perjure is another opportunity to victimize the ex and go for 100% custody of the kids or more property or money. If they are caught, they are virtually never punished in any way.

The people who tell the truth in family law courts are at a major disadvantage. The truth may be that the liar is suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder or Narcissistic Personality Disorder or some other common mental illness that typically results in a lot of lying and abuse towards others. The truth-teller cites examples of these behaviors. The liar then goes off and does stuff like falsely allege child sexual abuse, instantly shifting the focus from their problems and gaining them immense advantage.

The only realistic way this is going to change is by enforcing perjury laws and holding judges liable for failing to enforce them and other basic US laws. For instance, family court judges routinely violate due process laws, the US Constitution, and even laws on the admissibility of evidence. It's a normal activity for them to punish and strip people of their rights without even giving the victims a chance to defend themselves.

Another fact is that many of these men ARE victims: victims of a conservative upbringing where they are brainwashed with the idea that every single thing that happens in their lives is their fault and that they are to blame for ANYTHING that goes wrong in their lives.
The fact is that most of these men do not have 'superegos'........ they just have been brainwashed from birth in the ways I pointed out above, and until we stop allowing people to brainwash their children into thinking that everything that goes wrong in their lives in their fault..... we aren't going to see any less of these family annihilators.

  • Posted By: christopherkidwell1 @ 02/21/2009 1:54:34 AM

What drives these people to kill their children and other family members? Simple: hopelessness about numerous setbacks; being raised with the notion that they have to be the 'big powerful man' who provides for his family in all circumstances, no matter what, etc.
Basically, being raised in the conservative lifestyle.

davidrusher also gets it right by saying that 2/3 of fatal child abuse is done by mothers and other women.... though it's more like 3/4's from what the social services organizations have reported.

  • Posted By: davidrusher@swbell.net @ 02/21/2009 1:28:57 AM

Here is how bigoted Raina Kelley is: 2/3 of fatal child abuse is caused by mothers who are most often single mothers. It is a gross misrepresentation to suggest that men are overwhelmingly the annihilators. Half of serious spousal abuse is initiated by women. It is unethical and bigoted to isolate a very small portion of serious DV to present a false illusion that men are largely responsible for serious DV. Raina Kelley should be fired.

  • Posted By: davidrusher@swbell.net @ 02/21/2009 1:18:43 AM

It is duly noted that Raina Kelley again spews feminist agitprop, and does not bother to contact organizations with more accurate knowledge on the issue. This is one reason I cancelled my Newsweek subscription. Misandy is entirely unacceptable and inexcusable.

A recent murder suicide in my area has really bothered me. The man strangled his wife and son and the son faught for his life with a pocket knife, but the father eventually overcame him. The boy was 11. It makes me sick to my stomach to think of it. We all need to be aware of those around us and reach out to those who are struggling. I don't know that all of these cases could have been prevented, but even if we can only save a few....

    • Posted By: Tigerhaze @ 02/21/2009 1:11:05 AM

I think this should have been the conclusion of this story instead of the political statment made by the "unbiased" journalist. It's amazing what even a small amount of help can do for others when you look at the bigger picture in life. Some can't be helped, but you never know until you try.

  • Posted By: chadR @ 02/20/2009 7:09:35 PM

Yeah, doc, take away the guns so when a lunatic like this shows up in the workplace or at school we can't defend ourselves!!!

  • Posted By: Palin who? @ 02/19/2009 6:53:37 PM

Just a minute Tiger Haze (terrible name), I am as far left as you can get however I am a big proponet of the right to bear arms. What the O'bama admin is trying to do to ban some assault rifles is 100% a good idea, citizens have no right to own a weapon made for tactical war. And for all you rednecks who say that you deserve the right to own an AK-47 on M4 I'm really sorry but that's just the red burning on your neck....only the military has any need at all for such weapons.

    • Posted By: Tigerhaze @ 02/20/2009 6:37:38 PM

      Hi there-

First of all my screenname is a combination of my local university mascot and my truncated last name, so I think it is a good name for me at least.

Second, banning of guns based on their original intended use or their cosemtic look is falling directly into the hands of the anti-gun crowd. I own the predecessor of the AK-47 (SKS); it is a relatively weaker centerfile rifle compared to my "sporting" Remington .30-06 rifle. Both rifles are semi-automatic and come with multiple round magazines, so tell me why the SKS is so much more dangerous that it needs to be banned again- is it because it looks "scary", or maybe because it has a bayonet? Or maybe my "sporting" rifle needs to be banned too?

Remember, the reason the 2nd Amendment was drafted by the founding fathers was not for sporting reasons; however I have used my SKS sucessfully (and legally) to take whitetail deer contrary to Clinton's opinion on the lack of sporting use for "assault weapons". It should also be noted that true "assault rifles" are selective fire (full auto) which are classified as Class III weapons and are tightly controlled along with other destructive devices; my military origin SKS is not a Class III weapon and functions very similarly to "sporting arms".

When we differentiate acceptability of firearms by their origin and their appearance then we have already lost to the anti-gun movement. I would hope this conversation stimulates you to search out the truth and free you of the left-wing propoganda about military-style rifles.

I'm far left as well, but have recently come to the heavy realization that one day our government could be overthrown by evil people, or simply infiltrated through working the system, our could simply turn against the average citizen (it has happened before in many other countries), therefore, it appears wise, as it said in the Constitution, to uphold standing militias (which are nothing more than citizens who cherish the ideals on which the country was founded, freedom, equality, peace, prosperity, justice). If the greed and craziness gets out of hand, we've all read enough dystopian novels, seen enough dystopian movies, read the histories, to realize how truly easy it is for seemingly good men to do terrible things for the sake of money or power. If these people turn on the populace, commanding mercenary armies the likes of Blackwater (now called Xe) or even commanding foreign armies such against us, militias (which are made up of much more than mere "rednecks" would be the last bastion of hope and freedom standing in the way of tyranny and evil). The government is not always good and decent, a standing citizen army is a check and a balance, and as the founding fathers said, necessary to upholding peaceful, just, right order.
