Consider this, there is no God and it is our species' form of natural selection to only allow some women to be fertile. It's for the survival of the species, although for some people, in such an advanced age, that concept is hard to come to terms with. Women are human beings, naturally giving birth to 1, 2, or at most 3. We are not dogs... "litters" of babies is completely unnatural.

Of course, we would hate that anyone not get their way. Therefore, it is perfectly acceptable that we make these couples happy by killing a few of their children. As long as we do it before we see them in person, it's not really murder. However, since the "procedure" is so controversial, we will transform it using the power of semantics! "Selective Reduction", "Higher-Order Multiples", and "Abnormalities" are all pleasant examples of medical jargon that only serve to cloud the real issue by dehumanizing the victims. Reading this article felt like I was reading the private journal of Ted Bundy.

This is why we need to have infertility and IVF coverage in the United States, and it needs to be mandatory in every state. If a couple felt like they could do a round of IVF that wouldn't cost them 10k, maybe they would be more willing to transfer only one embryo at a time. Infertility is a medical condition, and should be covered by insurance as such.

nimodahooligan--I don't know whether the sperm donor is a "loser" or not, but he was NOT an anonymous donor who donated for money. He was a friend of Suleman's. Granted, she still made the ultimate decision to use so many embryos, but he was an idiot for donating sperm to her. But usually donors have no legal or financial responsibilites--I don't know what the complications may be in this case. It'll probably depend on what kind of legal agreement they had drawn up beforehand. But he knows full well those kids are his. He may not be legally responsible, but he's a moron.

      true....

i missed that it was a friend of hers that donated sperm.

and yes, he is a complete moron for taking part in giving her MORE kids...

It is outrageously irresposible for a woman with no job, no resources of her own, and no prospects...and six children already... to intentionally become pregnant again AT ALL, much less with octuplets. She is exactly what conservatives criticize with the term "welfare queen", whether SHE regards the public largesse she receives (food stamps, medicare, etc) to be "welfare" or not.

But the solution is not for the government to step in and establish laws regulating reproduction (a power that almost certainly WILL be abused for political or other purposes). The government created this situation in the first place, offering folks like this woman a guarantee of support, extracted from the rest of us by force, and even providing the free medical services that permitted this outrage. Fertility treatments are not the kind of "essential life-saving" medical care that anyone has any RIGHT to, so that he or she can properly expect others to pay for them (the government therefore has no business compelling the taxpayer to pay for them, either).

The medical profession enjoys substantial benefits from our society's laws giving them monopoly powers to dispense medicine and provide medical services... it they want to keep that power, they better get their collective heads together to prevent this kind of nonsense.

Terrific post, and true on every point.

LOL at the politics of outrage.

This is the same sort of "thinking" that took "being tough on crime" to "arresting 6 year olds for felonies".

But, by all means, get really mad because one woman acted like a nut, and give whackjobs the leverage they need to further legislate your reproductive rights. Idiots.

WHERE IS THE JERK 'FATHER' SPERM-DONOR IN THIS WHOLE SCENARIO ANYWAY? RATHER THAN OFFERS OF FREEBIES, HE AND THE IVF DOC SHOULD BE PUTTING UP THE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN HELP THIS WOMAN IS NEEDING -- IT SHOULD NOT BE COMING FROM HARD-EARNED TAXPAYER DOLLARS AT ALL!!

    • Posted By: Osama Bin Login @ 02/20/2009 2:27:59 PM

"WHERE IS THE JERK 'FATHER' SPERM-DONOR IN THIS WHOLE SCENARIO ANYWAY?"

Why should a sperm donor be held accountable? That's the stupidest ***ing thing I've ever heard.

      Methinks the "jerk" was off.

Life is about making choices. Letting the pregnancy proceed is a choice too, but I admire Mark for recognizing that is some cases letting the pregnancy undisturbed proceed is an irresponsible choice. Too often ideological preconceptions are used as an excuse to avoid the choices an adult has to make himself.

Check out the Times UK article February 14, Obama Warned Over Welfare Spendathon

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/article5733499.ece

Perhaps Suleman can cash in like the four sisters with 17 children in Wisconsin!

"In Wisconsin, the state that forged a pioneering path in welfare reforms in the 1990s, residents were astonished by a newspaper investigation that disclosed that a $340m (£236m) programme offering taxpayer-financed child care to low-income working parents was riddled with fraud and expensive loopholes.

In one case, a family of four sisters who had 17 children between them put all of them together, took it in turns to babysit them and over the past three years claimed $540,000 (£374,000) in perfectly legal state childcare subsidies."

"Perfectly legal" for taxpayer funds to pay low-income women to stay at home with their own children. How many mothers in two-parent households would love to stay at home with their own children but must actually work outside the home to help provide for their families?

All the more reason to pay, and get paid, in cash!

    good man doctor....

as for the woman with the octuplets... YOU SHOULD NOT BE HAVING KIDS IF YOU HAVE NO EDUCATION, NO JOB, NO CAR, NO REAL SUPPORT... much less 14 kids... and whether or not your not "living off the welfare" system is irrelevant. how do you suppose she is going to have time to work, provide for these kids, love, care, and raise each of them into healthy, intelligent, productive adults?

shes looking for handouts, waiting for the money to roll in through donations, family, childerens product sponsors, state money, and on and on. the whole ordeal doesnt make sense, and its very irresponsible in my eyes to WANT to crank out that many kids, and have no husband or boyfriend, or really anyone to help. her grandmothers house that she was expecting to live and raise these kids in is about to be foreclosed on. in these economic times, why would anyone want to pop out that many kids and not expect "welfare" or assistance of some kind....

she didnt think things through properly...but thats just my opinion...
