You guys either have the shortest memory in history or you are just plain ignorant. The top 7 culprits of this entire mess start with dubya, dick, and their redneck gang of Country wreckers. I have lost total respect for your publication.

It dide;n't happen is a day. when the bankers took over the government under Reagan, When the republicans went to war over lies and stupidity and have apent over a billion dollars a month for over 8years, when goldman sachs god a great bail out and has been running the treasury department since Reagan's administration in the person of his treasury secretary Reagan, till bush when it was Paulson also a wall street hack , when we let them take the money with no limitations or controls., when everyone watches fox news and gets dummed out because economics is too complicated to understand but hate and dirty words is easy than we have the downfall of the USA. It won't be long before our people will be going to other countries to live because the wolves have taken over the hen house and the average person can't make it anymore

You are missing Barney Frank and the rest of the democrats that pushed the financial industry into making sub-prime loans to people that everyone knew would default. If the government had stayed out of the financial industry decision making, most of the loans that went belly up would not have benn made because they would not have been guaranteed by the federal government. It is amusing to watch all of those people in Congress pretend like they had nothing to do with creating the meltdown. Barney Frnak should be sitting in a jail cell with Bernie Madoff.

Why doesn't our esteemed ex president reside in this list? Doesn't an unwarrented war and total disreguard for regulation count?

    • Posted By: drtbker4life @ 09/01/2009 6:26:06 PM

If our country was run by tyrants and you had no freedoms and had to worry about your wife/girlfriend/mother/sister getting raped by the police/military/son of the President, would you not want someone to intervene? And please, explain how Bush had a disregard for regulation, because I'm pretty sure that McCain and Bush tried to pass regulation but Democrats such as Barney Frank opposed it.

  • Posted By: Fizzrx50 @ 07/15/2009 10:40:58 AM

Then President Bush should get part of the blame as should the Dems in congress who were blind to and let Fannie May and Freddie Mac directors run amok.

    • Posted By: drtbker4life @ 09/01/2009 6:23:27 PM

McCain, and Bush, tried to regulate Freddie and Fannie, but were opposed by the Democrats, led by Barney Frank.

How about Reid and Pelousi, Dodd, Bernanke, Geithner, and Obama! Oh, and let's not forget yet another tax evader, Dem Congressman Rangel!

Interesting, more Newsweek "news by ommision". Where is the dunce cap for that idiot Barney Frank & Chris Dodd? Their ommisions smacks of Liberal "half-news" to lay blame on anyone except a Liberal.
    Yuck

I always find it interesting how journalists over and over miss the crucial part of the story. How about thinking: the energy hunger in Asia incresed the energy prices more than western markets were able to cope with and the resulting economic downturn triggered the housing misery. The credit crisis was "only" multiplying the market slump. You can blame these guys for greediness and maybe misjudgement of the market but scapegoating them is primitive pop economics (as posted by financeguy) not worthy of newsweek.

We could go much deeper than China's hunger for energy driving up oil prices. We can go back to the liberal, commie, pinko, enviro-terrorists who shut down our oil and natujral gas exploration and stopped expansion of nuclear power plants. Those SOB's even fight among rthemselves over windpower in California by filing suits to block giant windmill farms because it might harm the environment. Holy crap! Our founding fathers are probably turning in their graves wondering why we don't start doing more than "Tea Parties".

The realty is the problem was mostly the democrats uncontrolled spending but the Republicans did their share as well.It started with Bill Clinton. After Clinton Dodd and Frank continued to spending spree while Bush tried to restrain them the other Republicans went along with them.Following that Obama pushed Thur a so called stimulus package that was one of the most ill advised poorly planed package that did nothing for American workers it just rewarded the crooks that got us in the mess so for this Obama is the biggest offender and the stupidest of all. Obama has taken the title of the worst president in the history in a short period of time and will be impeached with out finishing his first term in office.

Why if Phil Gramm (and perhaps Wendy Gramm too) not on this list? It was Phil's big idea that we did not need an exchange to regulate the sale of Derivatives. At the all key points of deregulation since the 1990s, Phil Gramm was a key player. Consistently wrong.

I'm reading these comments and I'm amused. Some want the Democrats to take all of the blame. Some want Bush and company to take all of the blame. How about we split the difference since both parties deserve blame.
Let's not forget others such as Greenspan, the SEC, Goldman Sachs, AIG, etc.

  • Posted By: MikeyV @ 07/26/2009 8:51:43 AM

How about all these BOZOS and crooks in our government (especially Democrats) that ignored and repelled warnings about Fanniee and Freddie. These are the REAL CULPRITS that you so brazenly ignore (imagine that).

I've been wondering how many of the people listed above as well as the CEO's of Lehman, AIG, GM, etc. received MBA's from Harvard.....

Larry Summers for his part in removing the Glass Stiegel Act and Phil Graham Texas for his part in allowing credit default swaps into derivatives and worse yet I still can't believe that it could be legal for an established insurance agency to liable their whole insurance base with such a leveraged derivative. Most of all the OWNERS and OR EXECUTIVES pulling their puppet strings.

This is pop economics. I am not impressed. The author is falsely validating popular scapegoats. Shame on Newsweek. Shame on the author. What happened to the idea of researching a topic before offering an analysis? This man would be lucky to have half a clue. He doesn't. It's sad to think the poor man might actually believe what he is writing. The truth is, it is 90% hogwash.

Alan Greenspan should be prosecuted with no less fervor than in the war crime trials of WWII. His greed-based economic programs were as merciless as the worst camps liberated by the allies.
