Clinton made no mistakes on her China trip. Yet there's no evidence of serious strategic thinking either.

U.S. role in managing the rise of Asia.... talk about delusional, the U.S. can't even manage a bunch of bankers and it thinks it can manage a region of 2.5 billion people. You have to laugh at the kind of nuts that write for newsweek.
Absolutely right about the nuts of Newsweek. What you fail to say why there are so many western nuts? Reason is they consume their own dog food, namely, they believe in their own propaganda against China:

Well It sure does look like she did a great job on her trip, but Ms. Clinton did make major mistake by discounting India. For in the not too distant future India would be much more major power than what China would have hoped to be, and then again America has always been best at selecting the WRONG allys and BEST enemies, did anybody say Pakistan and China???

For Americans, this attitude to restrict China to be a stronger country seems to be the best and safest way. But actually, it is destined to fail because the macrohistory don't allow just a single super power existing in the world any longer. China will become stronger and stronger, meanwhile the voice from other part of the world will also more and more.

one thing is for sure hilary did not eat dog or cat steak for dinner -that redeems her and obama admin.
In response to prior comment by Tabi, by saying the communist party doing more harm than the Japanese during WWII you are insulting every Chinese person in the world not to mention the memories of all those that died during the Japanese invasion.
Also, your argument about the Chinese handling the Sichuan Earthquake just shows your ignorance of anything real that goes on in the world by implying openess is more important than actual help. If my city was hit with a natural diaster, I'd be way more concerned with the government helping me stay alive than the new coverage. I hope you will enjoy dying of thirst from lack of fresh water while a news crew is filming your house.
I can see the need for a more coherent strategy certainly, but not one that has us putting on kitten mittens. China's human rights violations, which tie together both Tibet and the communists' reprehensible treatment of their own people, are not something that should simply be dropped. We have already gotten the ball moving to integrate China into the world system, and only a Herculean effort by China or the United States is going to stop it.
China's record on human rights are our major edge over the regime. It helps protect Taiwan, maintains some of Hong Kong's continued independence and restrains the Chinese when dealing with their own people. if we go silent on the issue, we will have gained nothing and given China our tacit approval to do worse.
You sounds like a typical person who thinks that 1.3 billion of China is repressed but they are not. The Chinese citizens have a 90% approval of their government because they handled their social, economic, and political issues very effectively. Yet many people here in the US wants you to think otherwise. Before complaining how oppressive the Chinese government is, think about how messed up our government is.
You, are woefully ignorant. When I speak of oppression, I am referring to how the communists came to power. While coming to power, they killed and oppressed more Chinese than the Japanese ever did--and that is downright shameful. The current regime keeps oppression down through a combination of limiting the people's access to the news and a continual rain of propaganda. Why don't I trust the Communists?
If you want proof, just look at that 90% approval rating. Such a high approval rating is usually reserved for national heroes and regimes that manipulate their people via a combination of media controls, staged events and carefully targeted oppression.
Just look at how the Chinese handled the Sichuan Earthquake--they did a respectable job after the debacle, but they used government power to suppress any voices that complained about how shoddily the buildings were built and perhaps a hundred other mistakes. Now compare that to Katrina--the US government made a large number of mistakes, but those mistakes were made clear to the entire nation and the government has been changed as a result. That is Democracy in action--not perfect, but always striving to better itself. I wonder, how many bunglers the Communists have protected for the sake of protecting their own party.

somehow i doubt that the U.S. does not have a core strategy vis-a-vis China despite appearances to the contrary. the U.S. realized that China is growing stronger and may become a serious competitor to its dominance over the world, although that is by no means certain. one major factor will be how China manages its own rise and, so far, the Chinese leadership seems to be doing quite well. but the other major factor will be how the dominant power now, the U.S., regard China - will it help it, restrain it or just do nothing? restraining it or putting roadblocks is a dangerous gamble - if it succeeds, the U.S. remains the sole superpower, but if and when China does become very strong inspite of it, the U.S. will have guaranteed itself an implacable enemy. on the other hand, the U.S. does not want to facilitate or hasten China's rise. it is only human nature not to want to actively help a potential challenger to us. so now the U.S. is doing nothing and just hoping that China either falters on its own, or if China really becomes a superpower it will not look at the U.S. as an antagonist.

"China's record on human rights are our major edge over the regime. . . "
When will these unbelievable hypocrisy ends? These so-called human rights advocates had given their cause such a bad name by calling the kettle black and pointing at the sprinter in the eyes of others. Please, when will you take a look at your own backyard and acknowledge the fifth in it?.
