JUDGMENT CALLS

Presidential Double-Talk

Uncertainty (too much) and confidence (too little) define this crisis. Investors have surely noted the gap between Obama's rhetoric and his actions.

Boy did Samuelson ever hit the nail on the head! Not once, not twice, but all the way. They called Reagan the Teflon President. BO cannot talk without a telprompter. No wonder his campaign speeches were so smooth. His lack of experience and judgement is reflected in his troubled nominees. The biggest joke is his press secretary. The guy can't answer questions and his continual "ah", "ah"s are annoying. He'd flunk every speech class I took.

    Subject: Easy Economy Fix

    Patriotic retirement:

There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force - pay them $1 million a piece severance with the following stipulations that they must do:

    1) They must leave their jobs.

Forty million job openings - Unemployment fixed.

    2) They must buy New American cars.

Forty millions cars ordered - Auto Industry fixed.

    3) They must either buy a house/pay off their mortgage - Housing Crisis fixed.

Can't get any easier than that!

I'm a Republocrat (i.e. I like aspects of both ideologies but I dont like either one completely) and I'll make just one comment - effectiveness of communication. Here's what's effective - sound, well phrased opinions written with a cool head. Here's what doesnt work - Robert Samuelson's article. I stopped reading it after a couple of paragraphs. And not because I disagreed with the content necessarily but because it was appalingly presented. It was written in anger, it repeated the same banal talking points that turn off most readers when they see them, and was just a meaningless rant - not an article worthy of publishing.

Where did you find anger in Samuelson's article, especially in the beginning? Why not to consider another scenario, you were so angry finding out that dear Obama was not so "dear" for Samuelson - that you decided to skip the rest of the article. By late time of your responce, it seems that you were busy destroying everything that can remind you of this article, such as tearing apart paper Newsweek magazines, trying to destroy Newsweek page, or breaking your monitor and computer. I would recomment anger management.

Samelson is in a poor position to preach about double talk. Remember the economy where individual workers were screwed, but it was OK, per Samelson, because it promoted a self-regulating permanently stable economy? How about the "trivial" cost of Iraq?

Samelson says a lot of things. Some might be true. A large number are demonstrably shown by events to be untrue. He NEVER acknowledges his errors.

So why would anyone but ideologues listen to him?

  • Posted By: nicki763 @ 03/10/2009 7:04:53 PM

OH come on how stupid can you be. The man has not even been in office for 90 days, how in the world could everything be his falt.If blame has to be laid look back 95 days! But we sould be looking ahead. or look at the fact that the man at least won his office and didn't steal it! We all should be working together ! If he fails we all suffer.I feel I cant have too much comfidence.I have HOPE and that your stuid remarks or your hatred can never take away,(well at least not in 90 danm days!) Give me ,oh I don't know... 8 YEARS!!!

    • Posted By: bighappy @ 03/10/2009 9:09:35 PM

In fact, he stole it. His big gun supporters (in fact, the same bankers) commited the biggest fraud in modern history by announcing Great Depression in the times of mild recession just befor the elections. But even if he has been elected fair - we don't have to wait 4 years, let alone 8, to let him destroy this great country. Probably majority will disagree with me now, but we will see what you say in one year. And hopefully you will have brain to vote out Democrats in 2 years, to paralize Obama's revolution.

      • Posted By: A subscriber @ 03/11/2009 12:36:15 AM

What have Republicans to offer that they haven't had eight years to do? Now all they can do is complain about a new administration. Republicans are worried and want to change their failed image, but they have no intention of any real change of heart, nothing new to offer...just obstructionism while the country is in the worst crisis in history.

        • Posted By: bighappy @ 03/11/2009 9:16:26 PM

How did you say it, 'subscriber', "worst crisis in history"?? Obama and his bankers supporters said it. Obama fooled you, tryinng to convert regular recession into new Big Depression, the good way to justify trillions of so-named bailouts. You will never see a dime of it, but some will. Guess who? They are laughing at you, and in couple years you will feel like a fool, but now enjoy.

Quite your sniping. What do you propose. Tax cuts and deregulaton? Isn't that what got us into this mess. May I suggest that you control your blood pressure by turning off Fox news and Rush.

            • Posted By: bojack27 @ 03/20/2009 4:55:59 PM

I suggest you do your homework if you think tax cuts and derugulations got us into this mess.....

  • Posted By: zball1 @ 03/18/2009 10:57:10 PM

Why all the personal attacks. "Great pretender" "Obama's conceit" "his cockiness". Methinks that Mr. Samuelson has dipped into rhetoric at the level of Fox news. The claim that Obama is the one that is not seeking bipartisanship is laughable in the face of a republican policy that consists of one word, "No". I find it interesting that Mr. Samuelson does not write about the impact of the partisan agenda of the Republicans on the confidence of the financial markets that solutions will be found. That seems to me (and others who have commented here) to be fodder for discussion.

"To those who believe that Barack Obama is a different kind of politician???more honest, more courageous, more upfront???please don't examine his administration's recent budget. If you do, you may sadly conclude that he resembles presidents stretching back to John F. Kennedy in one crucial respect. He won't tax voters for all the government services they want. That's the main reason we've run budget deficits in 43 of the past 48 years." As a conservative, I am cautiously optimistic about Obama. He has been upfront about the problems and the limitations of his solutions. Commentators have noted this his budget proposal was far more transparent than those of the man I voted for twice. As for this commentator, he trashes Obama simply so he can get to his own agenda: a balanced budget. But it was Clinton, with tax increases, spending cuts, and a boom economy, that achieved that. Yes, he was lucky. But it was Bush who doubled the national deficit in two terms and left the economy in a tail spin. And it was Republican policies of reckless deregulation and starting unending wars that caused both the deficits and the failed economy. This commentator is the double-talker. I hope the Republicans keep running their mouths like this. The more they do, the more people like me realize that we need a new party of the middle ground. I'm just grateful that the Democrats, against all the odds, put forward a candidate who, in many ways, embodies middle ground ideology.

Well done. This is the type of constructive argument that is so lacking in Samuelson's article.

  • Posted By: libertyfirst @ 03/16/2009 4:42:01 PM

Spot on regarding Obama's use of double-talk. Calling a cow a horse does not make it so...no matter how much Kool-Aid you drink. Obama et. al are taking this age old political game of believe what I say but ignore what I do to a whole new level of brazenness. Of course, it helps to have MSNBC, NBC, CNN, CBS, ABC, the NY Times, and much of this rag openly and proudly supporting you.

This is nothing new about politicians. They all want to create Big Government and more Government control. That goes for Republicans and Democrats. The more hands off the Federal government are the better. The government???s job is to enforce the law. We can look back in history and the bigger and bigger government got worst things go and than the countries fell down on their faces. The focus should be on local governments (State and City) and the public (you). YOU are the answer. You know what you needs are and you know how best to solve them. No person in a White House in Washington knows what is best for you. If you want change, start with yourself. If you want government to be more moral start with your self. If you need a Job go out and find one yourself or go get the training to find a job. YOU are answer I can stress this enough. Neither President Obama nor Ex-President Bush could solve your problem. Why are we a recession because we keep on treating it like one. Yes business will fail but that is the way of the economy. The economy goes up and down, nothing new. What is new is this idea that we control it. We can not control it. So let us focuses on what we can control your selves and your values and morals. If start change your self ???YOU??? that are on our way to true change.

    • Posted By: bighappy @ 03/11/2009 8:51:51 PM

nobody can solve your problems but Obama the Great. If you manage someway - you will be punished. This is how socialism works.

Forgive the pun, but Samuelson is precisely "on the money" with this one.

Obama, more than Reagan, is "The Teflon President." Samuelson's article is, indirectly, an indictment of our educational system and its total failure to teach and to promote critical thinking.

    STRAIGHT TALK:

    1) Reduce permanently 10% of the federal and state work force - those left need work harder like most workers still working are forced to do,

    2) Make all government employees INCLUDING senators, house of reps & the President /VP give up earning any more pension benefits (like most americans no longer have), INSTEAD give them a match of 50% on up 6% of their annual wage they contribute into a 403B plan - USE the TAX savings resulting from the dropping of new pension TO PROPERLY FUND SOCIAL SECURITY FOR THE TAXPES SINCE THATS 10 year from going BROKE

    3) Have the FEDERAL government stop paying 80% for federal employee families health premium - drop it to 50%,

    4) Increase the FEDERAL employee health insurance deductible to $1000 like most private employers now have,

    5) make all senators and house of representatives serve NO MORE than 2 term limits - ends the power of long term senators, etc to force senators, etc to approve EARMARKS on bills alreday released from committee

    6) Go to a flat tax Federal tax program so the IRS audits can stop (laying off 50% of that organizations tax payer supported staff)

    7) after 1st child's birth to a single mom STOP paying for single mom's child birth , offer free sterilization - more than 1/2 the baby's being born in the US now being paid for by the government (TAXPAYERS in other words) and don't give these single mom's, who are abusing the free childbirth /single mom welfare system by having child after child out of wedlock, money to support more than 1 child

    8) NO Social Security, Medicaid or Medicare benefits to ANYONE NOT A US CITIZEN even if their "citizen" child brings them into the US - as are all being done now for NON Citizens!

    9) Give the President Line Item Veto rights

    10) Give life in prison to ANY politician find guilty of any abuse of power or corruption while in office

    11) OUR prisons - lower the taxes to care for the Prisoners - no more coffee or juice, let them drink water at ALL MEALS, feed them oatmeal/toast for breakfast, peanut butter/jelly sandwiches with crackers for lunch and inexpensive stew (easy to make and serve requiring less kitchen labor) And for medicines make them pay the FULL COST of medicine - why reduce their costs out of taxpayers pockets ? I didn't unjustly put them in prison THEY BROKE the law - suffer the CONSEQUENCES

    STOP THE MADNESS

P.S. Anyone running on the above platform will WIN any FUTURE elections, so Go for IT you TRUE AMERICANS!

  • Posted By: Ralph43 @ 03/14/2009 1:25:09 AM

Samuelson is--forgive the pun--is precisely on the money on this one. The mainstream press has consistently given Obama a "pass"--He surpasses Reagan as "The Teflon President."

Samuelson's article is actually a stinging indictment of our educational sytem--it's total failure to teach and to promote critical thinking.

  • Posted By: mathpol @ 03/13/2009 4:06:14 PM

    Samuelson says:

Is it in the public interest for the well-off elderly (say, a couple with $125,000 of income) to be subsidized, through Social Security and Medicare, by poorer young and middle-aged workers? Are any farm subsidies justified when farming seems no more insecure than countless other sectors (say, the news media) and subsidies aren't essential for food production? We wouldn't starve without agricultural subsidies.

Obama???s Budget proposes to means test Medicare Part D and to end direct payment to the largest farmers and cut back on other farm subsidies. (http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/assets/fy2010_new_era/Department_of_Agriculture1.PDF )

    Whose double-talking now?

None of his rhetoric matches fact. He doesn't get called out by the media for his lies. His appointees are a disgrace. If Bush had appointed these kind of people the media would have had fits. When are they going to call him out on his massive energy tax proposals that are going to slam the lower income earners? He is the most skilled liar in American history.

"If Obama were "responsible," he would be leading a candid conversation about government's size and role. Who deserves support and why? How big can government grow before higher taxes and deficits harm long-term economic growth? Although Obama claims to be doing this, he hasn't confronted entitlement psychology???the belief that government benefits once conferred should never be revoked???and asked whether some significant spending no longer serves any "public interest." "

Samuelson well knows that it is impossible to have a candid discuss today -- as long as the political parties AND the herd of industry lobbyists AND ideological media attack first and think later (or never), legislation and government here will be by sound byte. I think the reason President Obama struck a chord in so many Americans is that he actually TALKED to them and with them about issues for most of his campaign speeches, rather than just attacking his opponent.

President Obama inherited a HUGE mess, and cleaning it up isn't any easier when political maneuvering remains more important than helping our country and the rest of the world.

I ought to go back five or ten years and read some of Samuelson's columns then -- to see how well he's done in analyzing economic issues. Or perhaps I'd find, like Jon Stewart has so beautifully illustrated with CNBC's Jim Cramer, that noise and bluster and chest-pounding don't have anything to do with the quality of the comments.....

  • Posted By: buckwuz @ 03/12/2009 11:57:54 AM

I'm an independent and I'll make just one point - effectiveness of communication. Here's what works - properly thought through and well-phrased opinions. Here's what doesnt work - what Robert Samuelson wrote. He's writing in anger, repeats banal talking points that turn people off the moment they see them, and finally he somehow doesnt realize that credibility is earned, not assumed. If you're message is not effectively communicated, its meaningless. I'm not commenting on who's right - Republicans or Democrats. I'm just saying I stopped reading Mr. Samuelson's article after a couple of paragraphs because it was ineffective in communicating its message.

  • Posted By: Mandell7 @ 03/10/2009 8:34:54 AM

Am I the only one that is beginning to realize that there is an enormous foot dragging that's beginning to pick up momentum. A lot of people like Forbes would like like nothing so much as to see the same failed policies continue.that have put us into this fix, policies that began with Reagan in the '80's, policies that have eroded the middle class by a massive transfer of wealth to the rich. President Obama needs the backing of all right thinking Americans to get us back on course.

    • Posted By: bighappy @ 03/11/2009 9:27:03 PM

Yes, the same failed policies pulled us from several recessions. Carter's recession was worse and real, unlike the current fake one. Economists new whaty they were saying when predicted recovery in 2010, but they did not count on OMama. You can say they were wrong, because now recession will end in 1913, when next Reagan-like President will come back to the same "failed" remedies.

      • Posted By: bighappy @ 03/11/2009 9:41:56 PM

        Correction, I meant 2013, not 1913.
