An Army Of Changemakers

An idea that began with Franklin D. Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps 76 years ago and extends through several presidents in both parties (including Bill Clinton and George W. Bush) is about to get turbocharged.

For those who are approaching this as a partisan issue, please educate yourselves on the history of national service in our country by visiting the following website: http://www.nationalservice.gov/about/role_impact/history_timeline.asp. If you read carefully, you???ll notice that service is not a partisan issue.

Contrary to what Cgalle said, I must set some things straight. I was a full time AmeriCorps member for two years. I received a living allowance and at the end of the successful completion of my service I received an education award. As an AmeriCorps member I tutored and mentored students to help them remain successful in school. I did this for a total of 1700 hours a year minimum. With the exception of Christmas break, and federal holidays recognized by the school district, I was in service for about 40 hours a week. I loved what I did and I walked away with the knowledge that if everyone donated time in their communities, there may not be as many people needing help. The living allowance is to help with living expenses while serving these hours. I do, however, know that if my site did not think I was successful in what I was doing, I would not be serving.

I quote Cgalle as saying, ???You volunteer and no matter how good or bad you are, you get the same wage, how do you think that is going to motivate kids.??? Here is my answer for that statement: AmeriCorps does not place people in positions without interviewing and then checking to see if they are a good fit for the site. They continue to communicate with the site and constantly check to see how the member is doing. If there is a problem with a member or a site, it is taken care of. If the person is not doing what the job description states and nothing can be worked out, they are released from their service and the living allowance ends. They also do not receive their entire education award, if any, depending upon the situation. All members are motivated because they know they are making a difference in their community and the lives of each student they are tutoring or mentoring.

I love my service so much that I am with AmeriCorps*VISTA. This is because of the motivation I felt while serving in AmeriCorps.

This really is quite sad. Just because you pay people money, doesn't make it a job. No life lessons are going to be learned from this. You volunteer and no matter how good or bad you are, you get the same wage, how do you think that is going to motivate kids.

Its a joke about the Veterans part. DOD, Veterans affairs and Homeland Security are the only three programs shrinking by % of GDP. I would think the underfunded VA system could do better use of the dollars. Paying young adults or kids to feel empowered could be better spent. Who honestly thinks a bunch of College age kids can solve the VA issue?

The real question is, what exactly does this buy us, what product is being created? None, we are just paying people to do work that isn't in demand or needed. Wonder why these skill sets are here today? Because until know nobody wanted them. I still have confused if the worker needs the job or the job needs the worker................
